At home in style T
hey say your home decor reveals a lot about you. That statement fits me perfectly. When I set out two years ago to decorate my new home, I wanted it to be a reflection of not only my personal style, but also how I wanted to feel living in the space. This was top of mind with every choice I made. I love the beauty of expertly crafted furniture but hate the stuffy feeling of too traditional pieces. I love the formality of defined spaces but hate the closedin feeling of walls. Although it’s still a work in progress— not a big fan of my tile flooring or kitchen and bath layout — I love the idea of tackling these not finished spaces very soon. Changing up my living space has always been a labor of love. Whether it was the small townhouse, my first adult home, or the large house overlooking the Caloosahatchee River where we raised our children, I was up to the challenge of picking out furniture and accessories to reflect our lifestyle. For others the idea of making these difficult home decor choices is too intimidating to tackle. That’s where this month’s Grandeur steps in. If you’re looking for design ideas, what better way than to explore the Aviano at Fiddler’s Creek in Naples? This beautifully crafted model home boasts a splash of the unexpected coupled with high quality, page 27. In our cover story, “Design & Décor,” local experts share the hot decor trends in demand. One trend that might have seen its time come and go is the Mediterranean style, which is starting to fade in our area in favor of a more light and contemporary ambiance, page 33. In our shopping column, we offer up trendy choices in furniture, wallpaper, lighting and more. You never know, one of these items could spark to life that inner interior decorator, page 39. But the issue isn’t all about the home. It’s about exploring beyond your front door, too. The LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort exudes a modern coastal feel with its beachy color palette and a menu centered around seafood. From grouper tacos, lobster bisque and lobster black truffle risotto being a few, page 23. We’re also all about hot trends in fashion. You’ll easily make a statement by incorporating one of the bright hues that add plenty of personality to your spring fashion wardrobe, page 74. Whatever your style, whether home or personal, enjoy the journey — it’s worth taking. Until next month …

Dan Dodrill in his Horse Creek home

The founder of Daniel Wayne Homes, Dan Dodrill creates community here and abroad. 16 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
grand | FACES
live in my own subdivision,” says Dan Dodrill, founder of Daniel Wayne Homes. Such a declaration would cause many developers to cringe, but he embraces it. “You know that old adage, treat people the way you want to be treated, that’s what I try to do.”
Dan has been building custom homes in Southwest Florida for some 25 years. As you might imagine, the new house he just completed with his wife of 37 years, Karen, has all kinds of “wow” factors. In Buckingham’s new Horse Creek community, their welcoming home is full of special touches, including wood from a family barn in Indiana, built in 1905. “We had to bring those boards home. They’re old and cool, and they give a rustic country-yet-coastal feel,” Dan says. The barn boards line his den, creating the perfect spot for Dan to display his collection of antique woodworking tools. The wood was also brought into the master bath, 36 inches from the floor up, to surround the freestanding bathtub; it’s Pinterest perfection. “I like real stuff, hardwood floors, and we have real cypress beams across the ceiling.” The house has lots of light, a huge back porch with an enviable outdoor living area and an old-school window above the kitchen sink with a view of the backyard. When he was a child, Dan’s family spent years vacationing on Sanibel Island before relocating permanently from Indiana in 1972. His father built RV and mobile home parks where, at 11 years old, the future developer rolled up his sleeves. “My dad was a hard worker, he didn’t just sit in the office,” Dan says. “We were building things, pouring concrete and mowing grass.” That experience in the trenches proved valuable when establishing Daniel Wayne Homes. In a sea of resort-style communities with cookie cutter homes, Dan specializes in Old Florida designs with siding, tin roofs and big porches. You’ve seen his work in the charming communities of Coconut Creek and Calusa Creek, among others. While Dan custom builds individual homes in upscale communities as well as the country, he loves creating subdivisions. “Every so often I drive through one, and it’s so rewarding. I say, ‘Wow, this was a cow pasture and now there are 120 families here, in a home they love and cherish.’” He not only turns building dreams into reality in Southwest Florida but also in East
Africa through a nonprofit organization he founded more than 15 years ago called Builders Without Borders Inc. (builderswithoutborders.net). Dan’s brother and sister-in-law were missionaries in Spain and while at a conference met a man from Rwanda who wanted to build a youth center. He had a vision but not the $120,000 needed to buy the land. Dan helped him raise the capital in two weeks. However, securing the property was just the beginning. The visionary Rwandan contacted Dan again, this time for help in building the center. “I could send money, but they didn’t just need money, they needed someone to show them how,” Dan remembers. “I had no inclination to go over. I saw genocide and disease on the news, but it reached a point where I had to step out in faith and finally said, ‘OK, God, it looks like you really want me to be part of this project.’” He and 12 volunteers raised $400,000, and with the help of local laborers in Africa, completed a 7,000-square-foot multi-purpose building in 10 days. To date, 35 schools and youth centers have been built by the organization. The next trip is in July; it’s dry season and the temperatures are cooler. Once reluctant to put his boots on the ground in Africa, Dan has made the trip nearly 20 times and continues to be inspired by the lives changed and the impact the mission has on Americans who volunteer. “From housewives and college students to professionals, at the end of the week, they say, ‘This is the most important thing I’ve been a part of.’” “We can drop tons of food and at the end of year still have hungry people, but if we can teach them, it’s really going to make a difference.” No stranger to hard times himself, Dan went from building 60 homes a year to just one in 2009. Surviving the worst housing recession in his lifetime wasn’t easy, but he says, “Our faith was strong. We believed it would work out, and it did.” As for Africa: “It’s a way of giving back, a way of helping other people from a faithbased perspective. It is something we are instructed to do. We are blessed here in Southwest Florida.”

DESIGNING DUO Naples mother-daughter interior design team Barbara and Jenn Zella oversee projects in 35 states — and they’re poised for growth.
hey’re best friends and business partners who love what they do — together. That’s apparent, and these ingredients, folded with an innate design aesthetic and deep understanding of market trends, have created a recipe for impressive success. Barbara Zella and her daughter, Jenn Zella, have clients in 60 cities. Their CID Design Group in Naples landed on Interior Design magazine’s 2017 “Rising Giants” list based on income growth — and they’re aiming to land in the top “100 Giants” in the near future. You can say that the Zellas’ passion for design is in their DNA. Barbara’s father was a principal architect in Cleveland, Ohio, and her mother ran a hat factory that evolved into a bridal shop. “I was used to the entrepreneurial experience from a young age, like 7,” she says. With an interest in architecture, Barbara began creating interior layouts for model homes that her husband, a regional developer in Ohio, was building while raising Jenn and her brother, Rob. Her reputation grew to other metro areas. “It’s been an amazing process to this day,” Barbara says. “What I’m most proud about is that we’ve never had to solicit a client. Our phone has always rung because of clients’ satisfaction with our work.” She began working on rental remodels, and her attention turned to condo conversions. Fourteen years ago, Barbara brought her firm — and some of the team members — to Naples because there was a high concentration in Southwest Florida of dated multi-family units and communities in need of a facelift. “Even at that time, we were working nationally in other markets,” Barbara says. Clients had begun truncating Concepts in Design to CID, inspiring the name of the refocused firm. Barbara had a degree in business, but returned to school to earn her interior design degree. Jenn’s education is similar: She has dual bachelor’s degrees 18 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
in finance and interior design from the University of Georgia. They went back to school — together — to earn their National Council for Interior Design Qualification certification. The co-founding principals’ business savvy paired with their commitment to integrated design shows in their growth. With a focus on multi-family, hospitality and commercial projects, CID has 30 designers (in addition to four administration and marketing employees) who work together on all aspects of each project, including landscape design, exterior facades, color palette, and furnishings, fixtures and equipment selections. The diverse staff hails from Japan, Dubai, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and throughout the United States. “The team has been carefully curated and brought to Naples to bring more awareness and cultural perspective,” Barbara explains. Earlier this year, one of their designers was in Paris to read the pulse of global influences. They have budgeted to hire 10 more to fulfill $30 million in confirmed projects this year. The growth astounds the Zellas, considering that in 2010, there were no more than seven employees. “We’ve gone through growth successfully. The cool thing Barbara and I are proud of is that a lot of firms that go through a growth spurt lose a few
clients or whatever, but with us, there weren’t growing pains. I can say with absolute certainty that every single one of our projects has gotten better,” Jenn says. Barbara, 67, oversees operations, focusing on the firm’s “infrastructure,” goal planning and visioning. “It’s definitely a challenge but I think we’re wrapping our arms around it pretty good,” she says. Much of their work carries them out of town — about 60 percent is new development and the rest is renovation. One current regional project underway is the restaurant, bistro, lobby and fitness center of Kalea Bay in Naples. “We enjoy work in diversified markets for so many reasons. The key thing is getting experience in other markets and bringing it here,” Jenn says. They have perfected their processes and tap into technology for managing projects from afar. Jenn, 39, who has two young daughters, has also become a sought-after national speaker on the topic of designing multi-family units in urban, suburban and rural areas that accommodate a range of generations and needs. She produces a quarterly multi-family design forecast report as a tool for her team and clients. They approach projects through a psychographic lens — one that captures the characteristics of the residents, often multi-generational, that will inhabit a particular community. Jenn says she is looking to understand “the soul of that market” — whether it’s in Chicago or Los Angeles or along a greenway in Nashville, where the residents would rather kayak and hike than mingle at a fancy clubhouse. They are “adventurers” and “story seekers,” she says. The Zellas foster a close-knit office with quarterly nonprofit drives and energizing staff meetings. “None of this has happened overnight,” Jenn says. “It has been a tremendous effort and quite a journey to get to this point. So many times we could have given up.” Building it — together — has been one of the greatest rewards. “We’re close not only as mother and daughter, but best friends,” says Barbara.

ily Hatchett’s art work is like nothing most people have ever seen. It’s performance based, colorful, artistic and extremely unusual. Using large sculptures of paper as a backdrop, Lily projects colorful images on this stage as dog costumes move about and music plays. More than just art and performance, it’s atmosphere and creativity. “I started making paper dogs out of napkins when I was a kid at dinner,” Lily says. “I would entertain anyone who was sitting next to me with the paper napkins.” When Lily grew up and moved to New York City, she wanted her art to stand out from the crowd. “I was in a group show in Manhattan,” she explains. “I created a whole bunch of paper dogs and decorated the elevator with the dogs, so everyone who came to the show and left the show saw the paper dogs. They were part of the art show, but they were in the elevator. I was going to put in a painting, and everyone else was putting in paintings, and I didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing.” Lily watched people take photos with her paper dogs in the elevator and enjoy her art. She began making more and donating them to auctions where they drew high bids. She created entire dog litters from paper and sold the unusual sculptures. Then
she decided to enter a fringe art show in New Orleans. “I needed to do a complete show,” Lily says. That’s when the idea of incorporating people wearing paper dog heads, paper backgrounds and the colorful video began. “I came up with this way of having these elements that I can roll up and disappear into my minivan car-top carrier,” she says. “It is still about drawing and about sculpture.” Lily put together a video using unusual elements that blend into the background. She recorded video of a mop hanging over the stern of a boat in the Hudson River, a marionette doll dancing, her backyard shrubbery and more. Then she added colored filters making it look more like abstract art than actual items. This all projects onto the paper as the dog costumes move about and the live music plays. “When you find inspiration from obscure sources, you never know where that is going to take you,” Lily says. “The movement looks like nature. It is a highly filtered nature.” Lily received her bachelor’s degree at Antioch College in Ohio, where she studied staging, rigging, early childhood education and fine arts. Then she earned her master’s in fine arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art, LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting in Baltimore. She has always held an attraction to unique art. While in Baltimore, she used helium inflated Mylar balloons to create a giant bison, star, heart, buffalo
and more. Then she became part of a project sponsored by Goodyear to cover an acre of land with an inflatable dome. “We had to tether it down at points, because you can’t have an inflatable structure that wasn’t tethered down,” she says. “So we got car bodies without the wheels, turned them upside down, buried the cars underground and used them as a land anchor. It was pretty cool.” From New York City to New Orleans, Ohio, Miami and now Southwest Florida, Lily has been sharing her unique art with the public. She has held several shows at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center in Fort Myers, including a very unusual fashion show with models hiding behind her paper creations and surprising the audience. “My background has always been in performance art of some kind,” she says. On the second Wednesday of each month, Lily brings her Paper Grotto to the Shangri-La Springs Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs for its free Art & Nature Community Nights. Zawi Borsa, operations and events manager of the Shangri-La, is excited that Lily is part of the monthly activities. “She brings New York City here,” Zawi says. “For me it’s a really cultural artistic piece that I felt was lacking in the area. I found out about her and hunted her down for about a year. It took the art to a whole new level. People are mesmerized by it.” Zawi says she loves the improv of the act and the way it incorporates so many people, from the artist to the actors portraying dogs, to the live music. Kat Epple, an Emmy Award-winning and Grammy-nominated flautist and composer, and Nathan Dyke, who specializes in the didgeridoo, play the live music during Lily’s shows. “Always I am hunting for improvisation, because it is in the moment, and if you witness it, you know it will never happen that way again,” Zawi says. Born in Belgrade and raised in Paris, Honolulu and Ohio, Lily moved to Fort Myers in 2007. While she’s planning to hold more shows in New York City, where performance art is more common, Lily is also on a quest to make it more mainstream here in Southwest Florida. “We are here to fix that,” Lily says about the lack of New York-style culture in the area. “I was given the opportunity to be part of a whole trend of performance art. I got pulled into it when I was very young, and it just makes sense to do that.”

SOPHISTICATION The dining remodel at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort exudes a modern coastal feel.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY GINA BIRCH
hen it comes to dining on the beach, Southwest Florida is awash with places that don’t require shoes while proudly serving baskets of fried fare. In a sea of casual waterfront dining, there are a handful of upscale options, and Baleen is one of them. The premier dining spot at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort in Naples was closed for months following Hurricane Irma. While a remodel had already been planned for later in the year, storm damage not only moved up the project but also caused renovations to grow in scoop. The interior décor went from Old Florida, with Spanish tiles and dark furniture, to modern coastal with warm blue tones. The configurations of the tables have changed creating a better flow. Design layers have been added for a feeling of privacy with a stunning 4-foot sculpture, reminiscent of a whale bone, featured prominently in the center.
New furniture is on the way for the covered, outdoor terrace, which offers impeccable views of the Gulf of Mexico. The lower terrace has more seating along with fire pits where smores are served; the smell of toasted marshmallows wafting through the air evokes warm feelings of nostalgia. Tiki lights add to the ambiance and you can even customize your dining experience on the beach itself, with toes in the sand. The menu is seafood centered, and it is tweaked several times a year to keep up with what’s fresh and seasonal. That being said, there are a few signature items that will never go away, according to Martin Diehr, director of food and beverage, grouper tacos, lobster bisque, and lobster black truffle risotto being a few. We started with the beef carpaccio ravioli ($19). Folded in a neat triangle, the thin beef is filled with a light and silky egg yolk crema, accompanied by pickled beech mushrooms, black garlic, arugula pesto and bone marrow crostini. It was hard to resist the seared octopus ($20) appetizer, and I’m glad we didn’t. The thick pieces of meat were tender, the sear just right. Fried chickpeas added to the presentation and texture.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The cavatelli with Maine lobster and clam pasta is comforting and delicious. • The Gulf Catch changes daily, featuring the freshest local fish.• Recently renovated, the dining room at Baleen has a modern coastal feel.

While there aren’t many pasta dishes at Baleen, the lobster and clam cavatelli ($34) makes up for it. With a hint of spice from nduja and savory notes from saffron, the dish also features thinly sliced swiss chard and fennel. The lobster is tender, the sauce light and addicting, and the cavatelli pasta is just plain fun to eat. Scallop lovers will appreciate the preparation here, seared and served over a foie gras mousse with small chucks of spiced brioche, pork skin and orange. With a sprinkling of seasonal root vegetables, this paired beautifully with a glass of Nicolas Feuillatte Blanc de Blancs Champagne. Baleen has two sommeliers on staff, and Martin Diehr is one of them. The award-winning wine list features some 1,100 bottles from around the globe. The by-the-glass list is also quite impressive with some 30 selections. While every dish we tried hit the mark on presentation and flavors, it was the blackened gulf grouper ($46) that wowed me the most. One of the secrets to Executive Chef John Sexton’s signature dish is house-made neonata relish, a fish paste made with anchovy, tomato and Calabrian peppers. The meaty, creamy black grouper is placed on top of a charred corn truffle risotto cake that is surrounded by champagne citrus beurre blanc. It’s a dish you’ll want to take your time savoring. The martini list is expansive, so are the dessert drinks. The strawberry rhubarb margarita ($14) not only looks lovely in the glass, its flavors are balanced and unique with house-made rhubarb puree and strawberry puree. “We push the envelope with cocktails,” Martin says. “We do our own hydration of fruits for seasonal approaches, barrel age cocktails and are constantly coming up with new seasonal selections.” “We put innovative twists to classic food. It’s simple; let the food speak for itself and we’ll be successful every time,” Chef Sexton says. Considering the recent changes in Baleen, he adds, “I’m very excited with the future here and the product that LaPlaya continues to provide. The chase for excel24 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

SURPRISE The Aviano model at Fiddler’s Creek in Naples boasts a splash of the unexpected coupled with high quality.
The upstairs loft is bright and cheery. It is also full of geometric shapes and keeps with the beach and ocean theme with its octopus prints and sailboat pictures.
There are two guest rooms in this model. This cat-themed room has prints of felines on the pillows and has pops of green that stand out against the white bedspread.
The designer wanted a natural organic feel to the home. She said her goal was to use a palette of neutral colors and add splashes of blue and gold colors.
hredded paper artwork adorns a wall in the den. A stone table that would take half a dozen men to lift is the centerpiece of the living room. On the kitchen island, a golf cart tire and PVC pipe have been made into a wine caddy. The Aviano at Fiddler’s Creek in Naples is full of surprises in every room. “The designer did a wonderful job with all the furniture and the accessories,” says Jerry Colton, CEO of Harbourside Custom Homes. “They selected the light fixtures and accessories that were outside of the box.” It’s more than the accessories that make the home special. “There are two main things, the styling of the home and the construction quality,” Jerry explains. “The whole construction process is high, high, high quality, and then the design is top quality, so it is a special home.” GRANDEUR | MARCH 2018 | 27

What is unusual about the Aviano is that it comes in four sizes. It can be built from 2,500 square feet under air to 3,000 square feet under air. The layout is basically the same; the size of some rooms change. “We have been building it for 10 years. We update it every year to a newer trend,” Jerry says. “People like it because it feels so open. I think that when you come in the front door, it is wide open. You have that open feeling.” The Aviano model in Fiddler’s Creek is Harbourside’s newest version of the model. It’s very popular, says Kendall Coughlin, sales associate with Harbourside Custom Homes. “We’re known for our detail work,” she says. “Our ceilings are exquisite. It has wrought iron front doors. It adds elegance to it.” The front door opens to the great room, which seamlessly leads to the kitchen, the formal dining area and an eating nook, all with no walls of separation. Pocket doors open to the lanai with another eating area, sitting area, real natural gas fireplace, television, pool and spa. The roofed portion of the lanai can be enclosed with roll down screens. A fountain feature in the pool drowns out the noise from homes under construction nearby. With a northeast exposure,

the lanai overlooks the 15th hole of the Fiddler’s Creek golf course. Inside, the entire home has a natural feel with the colors of nature blasted with bright accents. Erin Abbey, design coordinator for Collins & DuPont Design Group, says designer and project leader Alina Dolan had a specific vision in mind when she created the home. “The overall inspiration for the project was she really wanted a natural organic feel,” Erin says. “She really worked in the neutral pallets with pops of sapphire blues and golds.” Those colors aren’t just seen on accent pillows, but in other locations such as the gold wallpaper behind the 75-inch television in the great room. “She wanted a really textural element there,” Erin says. “If you look at that wall, there are steps to it, so she wanted the center portion to draw you in. Then she had custom art to flank the TV that was custom made for the home.” Erin says items such as the stone coffee table and wine caddy come from a designer’s market that Alina travels to six times a year. “She loved how the stone top drew in the colors she was working with in the room and how the base itself had a wood grain look to it but had a metallic sheen,” Erin says.
“We have been building it for 10 years. We update it every year to a newer trend. People like it because it feels so open. I think that when you come in the front door, it is wide open. You have that open feeling.” — JERRY COLTON

This framed piece features white paper that is torn and seems to move out from the center as pieces of shredded paper. • The designer used earth tones in the furnishings and in the art work that is found throughout the Aviano model. • The entry of the Aviano leads to the great room and to the formal dining room. • The lanai features a gas fireplace and large television by the sitting area. • The home also has hints of a nautical theme with details such as the rope handles on this dresser. • Even the master bathroom has art work covering the walls. The owner can enjoy this while soaking in the stand alone tub.

There are also lamps that look like stone eggs. “They look earthy and rustic but transitional, too,” Kendall says. Design elements continue on a ceiling that consists of intersecting white painted beams. Nearby in the kitchen, another television hangs above the oven, giving people sitting at the wide island a perfect view. A round table beside three-paneled glass windows forms an informal dining nook tucked under a chandelier of bead-trimmed leaves. The formal dining area has glass canisters hanging from the ceiling with candle-like lighting inside. “It’s mood lighting,” Kendall says. The earthy look continues in the half bath, which has a floating vanity decorated with faux crocodile skin, and in the den, which has a faux animal rug and shredded paper picture. In the master bedroom, a headboard behind the bed looks like the back of a couch. Eight photos of flowers in brown square frames cover one wall while the other side of the room sports sliding glass doors leading to the lanai. There is a comfy long lounge chair with a textured throw in earthy brown, white and olive green shades. “With the master bedroom, she was just looking to create a serene environment where someone can just go in there and feel at home,” Erin says. “She (Alina) really wants to put some fun pops of colors in bedrooms.” Kendall points to the lights in the master bathroom as one of her favorite features. “I love the light fixture,” Kendall says. “It is just a starburst. It is very glamorous in here. It’s like the Taj Mahal.” Each of the two guest rooms has a theme: birds and cats. The bird room has metal birds that look like they are flying on the wall. Sandpiper patterns adorn the pillows. A nautical theme for these shorebirds continues with rope handles on the dresser and bird sculptures on the dresser. The cat room has black and white cats printed on the pillows. Pops of green stand out against the white bedspread. In that guest bathroom, a large circular mirror is framed by drop down bulbs that hang from the ceiling over the vanity. “She likes to do whimsical,” Erin says. “Especially in the guest bedrooms, so there is the cat bedroom and the bird one that is more coastal, but still whimsical.” The Aviano has a few other unique features. In the laundry room, a sock sculpture has hooks for socks that don’t have a match. Outside, the doors on the three-car garage have a wooden finish. The Aviano in Fiddler’s Creek spans 2,769 square feet under air and 4,124 total square footage of living space and costs $1.775 million. It is one of 22 homes that Harbourside will be building in the Marsh Cove section of Fiddler’s Creek. 30 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: The Aviano model in Fiddler’s Creek in Naples comes in four sizes. Although the exterior looks the same, the size of the rooms can be customized. • The interior designer wanted to create mood lighting in the formal dining room so she used glass canisters hanging from the ceiling with candle like lighting inside. • Pocket doors open the home up to the pool and spa area. Screens can be lowered at the push of a button if bugs become a problem. • Textural elements were used throughout the house especially in the great room where a stone coffee table is a focal point. Another highlight is the wall layered like steps by the television.

tyle trends come and go. Remember when avocado green and harvest gold kitchen appliances and cabinets were all the rage in Southwest Florida? Perhaps not. Most were replaced or upgraded in the decades following the 1960s with the latest technological and color trends for that decade.
Interior trends may fly under the radar, while architectural trends have a lasting impact in the built environment. Even new visitors and residents will notice that Southwest Florida was swept by an architectural trend in Mediterranean design, not once, but twice: during a brief spurt in the 1920s and a long ride that began in the late 1990s. Call them what you will: Tuscan, Italianate, Spanish Revival, Mediterranean. In the 1920s, Palm Beach resort designer Addison Mizner led the influential fashion in home design that integrated the exterior, interior and gardens. Many of those original dames can be found in older, established neighborhoods in Lee and Collier counties, many of them quite diminutive. The modern versions, however, tend more toward the palatial. In the past decade, the pendulum has begun
to swing in the opposite direction: toward light colors and metals and spare, uncluttered spaces. In truth, the biggest trend in home design now is what you can’t see: home automation. Homeowners can monitor and adjust the temperature and security system of a smart home remotely — while at work or on vacation — and with a slew of devices from the comfort of their sofa or bed. With a range of voice-activated “assistants” — Apple’s Siri, Google’s Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa — combined with Wi-Fi, smartphones and specialized accessories, such as smart plugs and light bulbs, plug-in appliances react to the sound of your voice. Music and entertainment, fans, washing machines, lights integrated with the doorbell, security monitors, coffeemakers — the list of features that can be controlled through a smartphone or device like Echo GRANDEUR | MARCH 2018 | 35

is endless. Home systems with sensors can detect occupancy and self-adjust when you leave for the day, such as the temperature, and lights can be programmed to turn on when you enter. “It is the way houses are going. There are more and more parts of the house being controlled digitally and in concert with each other,” says Fort Myers architect Jeff Mudgett of Parker/Mudgett/Smith Architects. He notes that high-tech made its entrance to address sustainability issues, such as monitoring moisture levels and electrical usage, but it has evolved far beyond. “For high-end houses, it’s very trendy. If I’m getting ready for a party, the sliding doors can open, lights go dim and music comes on at my command. It’ll be ‘Star Trek’ soon enough. Alexa, make my dinner.” The demand for smart homes is the result of society’s demand for convenience, says Jennifer Languell, a guru of building sustainability and owner of Trifecta Construction Solutions. They may be cool, futuristic gadgets, but they also bolster energy efficiency and savings. “The fact that I can sit on the couch and if it starts raining, I can turn my sprinklers off with my phone, that’s the technology side, but it’s saving water,” she says. “I can adjust my heating or cooling from my bed, couch or from across the country, because I forgot to turn my thermostat up.” 36 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
Moving away from Mediterranean Any home, even Old World Mediterranean fortresses, can go the automation route. But there has been a recent trend in (and it’s a mouthful) “de-Mediterraneanizing” or de-Medding homes. Mediterranean homes tend to feature merlot, gold and terracotta, along with dark woods, high ceilings and extensive stone and marble. Clive Daniel Home has a television commercial calling the shift to more contemporary designs “de-Tuscanizing.” Designers in the ad explain that with that fad, “everything was overdone, fancy, just too much.” Today, “it’s not about heavy, dark. It’s about light and airy.” Clive Daniel Home interior designer Sherree Wood says there are a number of tricks for “lightening up” and extreme
interior architecture measures, including lowering 16- and 18-foot ceiling heights, boxing rounded load-bearing beams and archways, and replacing dark-swirl Carrera countertops and floor tile. There are easy fixes to bring the homes up to date. Painting all the rooms the same light color with a deeper accent wall — particularly popular where the flat-screen TV hangs — makes “it all come together and flow,” she says. White, cream, ivory and different shades of gray are popular today. Refacing cabinets, adding transitional rugs, incorporating light metal fixtures, and “getting rid of tchotchkes and collectibles,” can help lighten, re-energize and repurpose a space, she says. Sherree estimates that 30 to 40 percent of her remodels are for “de-Tuscanizing

and simplyfing people’s space in life. People are living a more streamlined lifestyle. Boomers, and we have a lot of second home buyers, they’re trying to get rid of all that stuff. Most people really are trying to simplify at this stage in the game.” Built-ins are making a return, too, she says. They’re a common feature in the new homes by Homes by Towne, a Sarasota-based firm and preferred founding builder at Babcock Ranch. It built the first two homes that were purchased and moved into. Kitt Kearney, vice president of sales and marketing for Homes by Towne, says built-ins with glass shelving are a defining feature of their dens. “We do a lot of built-ins. That’s a big trend for people putting into their homes,” she says. Glass brings light and airiness throughout a home: in the stacked glass cabinets and frosted-glass pantry door in the kitchen to the frameless shower doors. There are seven preferred builders at Babcock Ranch, which is creating an oldtime neighborhood feel. Kearney’s company is building West Indies, farmhouse, coastal and Craftsman homes — but no Mediterraneans.
Lightening and lighting During one recent week, Naples interior designer Faith Fix, founder of Freestyle Interiors in Bonita Springs, says her office received five calls inquiring about renovating away from the dark wood, marbles and wall colorings. “They’re coming out of the woodwork,” she says. “We’ve been painting a lot.” But what she finds most exciting in design trends — returning to state-of-the-art electronics — is in lighting. “I’ve been having a fun time with lighting,” Faith says. “You can retrofit all the can lights in your home. They’re more efficient, and it’s really become an art form.” She says LEDs offer adaptability in directional lighting, which frees up certain designs because they light 38 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
spaces, such as book cases or built-ins, seamlessly. “It can make the complete difference in a home,” she says of updating lighting. They can be tricky to the unknowing homeowner, so Faith has a word of caution: Choose LED lights that have the same Kelvin rating. The scale is used to measure the color temperature of a light bulb. The higher the Kelvin rating, the whiter the lighting will be. Lower ones tend to be warmer or dimmer. Chuck Bebber, vice president of Brothers Lighting & Fan Gallery in Fort Myers, notes that the range of brightness and efficiency in LEDs has grown. He says, in general, consumers don’t need to worry too much about Kelvin rating unless they are incorporating sev-
eral in the same room, such an array of recessed ceiling lights in a kitchen. A new surface-mounted, under-thecabinet light by Kichler Lighting can be automatically adjusted to the same brightness of the fixtures already installed in the kitchen. “Three-quarters of people don’t realize the difference in color temperatures,” he says. Bebber has noticed other trends in lighting, such as light nickel, chrome, brushed steel and gold-silver “champagne” finishes. “More contemporary looks are taking over and traditional styles are being slowly weaned away,” he says. And de-Medding? The lighting companies saw this a long time ago. “In the last five years, I’ve had maybe one or two series that reminded people of those styles.”

he wears her jewelry well,” Karen Bell says with a note of pride. She’s Lily — a face that’s become synonymous with the eponymous Sanibel Island jewelry store Lily & Co. Lily is a chocolate labradoodle who came into Karen’s life two years before she and business partner Dan Schuyler opened their jewelry store. Karen, who is also a long-time Captiva Realtor, says the name Lily & Co. became the clear choice, an echo of a famous classic: Tiffany & Co. But Lily’s modeling career “was really quite by accident.” When they were readying the store for opening in 2006, Karen and Dan created a “teaser ad” featuring a bejeweled Lily. As they were preparing inventory, a woman in a flannel shirt rode up on a bicycle, pointed to the ad in her hand and said she wanted to buy the $35,000 Tahitian pearl and sapphire necklace Lily was showcasing. “And we weren’t even open,” Karen says. That first client pulled out short of $50,000 later, with the necklace and a watch. STORY BY CATHY CHESTNUT PHOTOS BY LOGAN NEWELL

They realized they were “onto something” but still went the route of hiring human models. That didn’t fly with the tight island community. “We had people asking, ‘Where are the ads with Lily?’” Karen recalls. So Lily became the boutique’s “spokesdog,” a flexible persona who’s modeled with a guitar for a “flower power” theme and in motorcycle garb. Behind the glamor, Lily has become an integral part of Karen’s life.
Karen, 59, admittedly worked long hours in real estate — before sunrise and after sunset. She had always been a “cat person,” because they are relatively carefree, and toyed with the idea of making the commitment to a dog for three years. After meeting her friend’s labradoodle, Karen placed an order with the Australian breeders who originally crossbred a Labrador retriever with a standard poodle to create a dander-free breed suitable for guiding and service for those with allergies. Following a nine-month wait, Karen received 10-week-old Lily in July 2004 — a month before Hurricane Charley hit Southwest Florida. Thereafter, Lily underwent two obedience training stints and an agility course, followed by professional instruction at home. Since the beginning, Lily and Karen have been constant companions. She’s perfectly suited to
Karen’s office at VIP Realty Group and daily visits to the jewelry store, where she joins Dan’s two Labrador retrievers, Angel and Gracie, in warmly greeting visitors. “She’s a working girl,” Karen says. All of Lily’s efforts in front of hot studio lights and around the island are duly rewarded. Lily partakes of Karen’s homemade food, sometimes handfed, a habit developed when Lily’s appetite sank during an illness. “She still likes that from time to rime. Mommy doesn’t care. She’s one of my greatest gifts in this lifetime,” Karen says. Each Saturday is a poolside “fun day” for Lily and her canine playdate of 11-plus years, a rescued retriever mix named Emmett. Both have a deep affinity for swimming, and Lily knows what Karen is eluding to when she spells out s-w-i-m. Lily recently scored a full-time buddy she adores: 6-month-old Leo, an orange tabby. The beach is at hand, and there are two long walks in the neighborhood each day. “There isn’t much in life that she’s gotten too tired to do,” Karen says. Karen says Lily helped her reframe life. “She brings joy to whoever she meets. I believe she was put on this earth to do that,” Karen says. “She taught me there’s more to life than just working. Lily knows when to stop. She has been a great example for me.”

With a focus on the home in this issue of Grandeur, we not only fill our Grand Case with unique selections but also offer ideas of what to serve them
with — at home. Whether you are doing the cooking and entertaining, or you’re trusted with bringing a bottle to a dinner party, we’ve attempted to cover the spectrum of possibilities. MaryJane Vu, owner of Waterside Wine Club in Cape Coral, hosts monthly tastings and private events that often help wine lovers figure out what to pair with their next meal. She helps me fill this month’s Grand Case.

Philippe Gonet Brut Signature ($50) » I rarely get through a case of wine each month without offering something that sparkles. Champagne and sparkling wine are not just for celebrations but also for food — really any occasion. The Gonet family is one of the largest family growers in Champagne, and they are known for their Blanc de Blancs. Made from chardonnay, this one has that brioche aroma you might expect. It has nice minerality with lemon, pear and honey flavors. Serve with anything that is salty or fatty.
Massaya Le Colombier Red Blend ($13.99) » For an unusual wine selection to bring to a fun gathering, this red blend from Massaya Winery in Lebanon is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Lebanon employs many international grape varieties as evident in this 2014 vintage of cinsault, grenache, syrah and tempranillo. On the nose, aromas of maraschino cherries are dotted with hints of peppermint while flavors of wild raspberries and orange zest fill the palate. This wine is silky and smooth with round, well-developed tannins and a moderate finish. Enjoy with roast beef and wild game.
GINA BIRCH

Domaine Serene Evenstad Reserve 2014 ($70) » It’s a big, bad, balanced pinot noir made with fruit from some of Oregon’s most prestigious vineyards. The nose is weighty with dark fruit while the body, although bold, is still silky with raspberry, vanilla and some brambly notes. This finish just goes on and on with spice and fruit. Not only is the wine outstanding, but also its visionary owners have ties to Southwest Florida as trustees of the Naples Winter Wine Festival. Serve it with duck or a roasted pig.
Légende SaintÉmilion 2014 ($44.99) » From the prestigious vineyards of Domaine Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), the Légende label was developed to create more approachable wines for everyday drinking and this one is a keeper. Introduced to the US a little more than a year ago, this one is 85 percent merlot and 15 percent cabernet franc. With lots of red fruit and some pepper. It’s a medium bodied wine with a fresh finish fitting for beef or even a dish with venison or similar game.

Guest columnist, owner of Waterside Wine Club in Cape Coral
Monmousseau Vouvray ($14.99) » Chenin blanc thrives in the cool regions in the mid-Loire Valley, and Vouvrays are some of the best examples of the fresh, delicate features of this grape varietal. Monmousseau’s current vintage of this classic is 2015, which showcases a soft and creamy mouth feel with green apple aromas, toasted nutty notes and a rich honeyed texture. It is balanced by brisk acidity and a clean refreshing finish. Enjoy this wine with fish or roasted chicken dishes. It will also complement spicier ethnic fare.
Maeli Fior d’Arancio ($22.50) » This 2015 vintage is comprised solely of yellow muscat, a grape variety indigenous to the hills of the Veneto wine region of Northern Italy. Elegant and sophisticated, it boasts the suggestion of sweetness without the cloying additional sugar found in many muscats. Aromas of white flowers and clementine dance with the complex balsamic flavors on the palate and complement the zippy persistent effervescence. Pair with subtle appetizers or enjoy with afternoon indulgences of shortcakes and light pastries.
Vondeling Cabernet Sauvignon ($18.75) » Vondeling Winery is less than an hour from Cape Town, South Africa, and its fertile land has been producing wine for well over 300 years. Their esteemed cabernet sauvignon is grown on the ground’s highest peak and the current 2015 vintage is one to savor. Red cherries, nutmeg and vanilla fill the bouquet while black cherries and tobacco greet the palate. Eighteen months in French oak round out the tannins and add hints of almonds on the finish. Enjoy this wine with lighter pasta dishes and it will pair well with unadorned meats.
Dans La Neige ($28) » It’s not easy to find a wine that complements vegetables such as artichokes and asparagus, but this one does. It also pairs well with saffron. This luscious Rhone blend is 50 percent viognier from the famed Condrieu region of France. The other half is a blend of marsanne and roussanne. Translated, the name means ballet of the snow, with a dreamy label — a wine geek’s dream, really. Full, fresh and fruity, less than 200 cases were made, and it has just been introduced to Southwest Florida. Find it. Buy it.
Greg Norman Sauvignon Blanc 2016 ($14) » I always like to find wines that are new, even if they are from a producer that has been around for a while, like Greg Norman, yes, the professional golfer. He was in Naples recently for his annual QBE Shootout (I still call it the Shark Shootout) and came packing more than his clubs. Known more for his reds, he now makes a fresh sauvignon blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand, and it has just been released in Southwest Florida. It smells of grapefruit and tastes like citrus, lemon curd and melon. With a slight effervescent quality, this one goes nicely with seafood.
Powell & Son Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2016 ($25) » While I adore the Powell & Son Brennecker Grenache for $286, this GSM blend is much more affordable for the everyday drinker, and it’s darn good. The nose makes me want to cuddle the glass; it teases the senses. The fruit is bright berry — cherry and raspberry. It is fruity yet savory with a nice bit of spice and a pleasing finish. In case you’re wondering, mataro is another name for mourvedre. This is another wine that would pair well with meat, a lean cut, or barbecue.
Ancient Peaks Renegade ($21.99) » Ancient Peaks is a prominent winery in Paso Robles, California, and although they produce many stellar single varietals, their syrahled blend stands out as a showstopper. Aptly named Renegade, the 2015 vintage features zinfandel and small portions of petite sirah and petit verdot blended in for depth and character. This wine is a good solid choice for everything from a Tuesday night pot roast to a special occasion lamb shank.
Astrolabe Pinot Noir $29.99 » It is difficult to create a full-bodied single varietal pinot noir with flavor and depth in the chilly wine regions of New Zealand, but Astrolabe’s 2014 vintage impresses. Cherry and raspberry aromas complement flavors of tobacco leaves and herbal notes. Elegant round tannins linger pleasantly on the palate. This wine will enhance roasted meats and a variety of pork and poultry entrees. *Prices listed can vary. Some of these wines can be found in local wine shops, others are limited production and may require shipment from the producers themselves.

Tsala lodge
48 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
T
he continent of Africa boasts much more than adventurous wild game safaris. Breathtaking landscapes and pristine beaches form the backdrop for a variety of experiences and thrills,
including whale watching, rappelling, skydiving, surfing, wineries and exotic cuisine. Fort Myers resident Anne Styles has not only vacationed in South Africa but has also resided there with her husband, Peter.
The forest view from the Tsala lodge.
“The tremendous variety of landscape makes South Africa very different to Florida. Some coastal areas have a similar climate with similar flora and fauna to ours, but then there are mountains and high plateaus,” Anne says. “Some of the earliest examples and evidence of the ‘birth’ of mankind, a country of different cultures still learning to live together, makes it living history.” Having vacationed in South Africa five times, Anne says Namibia and South Africa are her and Peter’s favorite countries. “In South Africa, Cape Town is the best large city we have visited, but there are several other areas we have been, which are spectacular,” she says. “These include the Stellenbosch wine area near Cape Town, the Garden Route along the coast east of Cape Town, Knysna and the Drakensberg mountains. There are also some wonderful game parks like Kruger (National Park).” Plettenberg Bay, located along the Garden Route in the Western Cape area, is an ideal South Afri-
can destination for its breathtaking backdrop and numerous activities. “The scenery is perhaps the greatest highlight of all, and the sweeping vistas of pristine lagoons and beaches can’t easily be beaten anywhere else along the Garden Route. There are six internationally recognized Blue Flag beaches, each with its own personality, along the town’s 20 kilometres of picturesque Indian Ocean coastline,” Plett tourism spokesperson Patty Butterworth writes in an email interview. Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education that signifies management of the beach meets stringent environmental criteria. “Lounging in the soft, warm sand is only the beginning. Surfing, skim boarding and bodyboarding are popular among locals and visitors. With up to 12-foot waves, the beaches along Plett’s coastline are home to some of the best waves in South Africa.” South Africa waters are home to dolphins, whales and seals.
“During winter months (May-October), the spectacular southern right whales, humpback whales and occasionally orca whales take up residence in the bay when they arrive up from the southern oceans to calve,” Patty writes. In addition to the beaches, the Plett region offers visitors spectacular and diverse nature experiences. “The region encompasses five different biospheres: forests, fynbos, wetlands, mountains and the coastal region, each with its own abundant offerings,” Patty adds. “The bay is flanked by Robberg Nature Reserve on the one side and the Tsitsikamma indigenous mountains and forests on the other side.” The small Cape Floral Kingdom between Cape Town and along the Garden Route contains 8,500 species of flowering plants. “This is more than is found in the entire northern hemisphere,” Patty writes. “There are a great many wild proteas, and the list of geophytes that can be seen in the area is extensive.” GRANDEUR | MARCH 2018 | 49
grand | GETAWAY
Patty says visitors to Plett enjoy the marine life activities (whale watching, diving with seals, sea kayaking, surfing, stand up paddling) as well as animal adventures (largest free-roaming monkey sanctuary and bird aviary, animal rehabilitation centers). Outdoor leisure activities (hiking, cycling, bird watching, wine tasting) coupled with adventures like kloofing — known elsewhere as canyoning or canyoneering — rappelling, skydiving, and bungee jumping all provide for an unforgettable South African vacation. “Visitors are most taken back by the natural beauty of the area and the amazing fynbos, flora and birdlife this destination offers,” Patty says. “More than 260 species of birds have been sighted in this area with its unique four habitats, namely the forests, fynbos, wetlands and the coastal region, making this area a birdwatchers’ paradise. Special birds include the Knysna loerie, Narina trogon (both found in indigenous forests), the African black oystercatcher (coastal) and the orangebreasted sunbird (fynbos).” When visiting South Africa, the lodging can be an experience itself. Imagine staying amid the tops of a forest in a luxury treetop lodge. Overlooking the indigenous forests, ideally situated between the coastal towns of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in Western Cape, Tsala Treetop Lodge is a wonderful location from which to explore the beauty of the celebrated Garden Route, according to Ian Hunter, CEO of Hunter Hotels. “Tsala exudes a mysticism that makes it a destination people wish to explore and experience. It fills your heart with warmth and steals your imagination with its design, breathtaking views and ideal location,” Ian writes in an email interview. Tsala has 10 treetop suites tucked into the forest canopy, the essence of indulgence and romance, along with six twobedroom villas built high above the forest floor to complement the style and architecture of Tsala. The Treetop Suites extend into the forest with a private deck and your own infinity pool, providing the ultimate privacy. The Treetop Villas feature a large lounge with a fireplace and dining area and a forest-facing private deck and infinity pool. “Tsala is a magical place, encircled by lush forests extending across rolling valleys, toward the distant hills. Upon arrival, Tsala’s impressive stonemasonry entrance flanked by water features leads to a magnificent foyer supported by blackwood columns,” Ian writes. “The elaborate afro-baroque décor’s earthy colours, rich textures and handcrafted fittings are inspired by the diverse cultures of Africa, with the sophistication of the Western World. The views are breathtaking, whether from the exotic dining room, intimate glassed-in lounge or large open decks high above the forest floor.” Tsala is popular to a wide cross-section of ages, and its typical guests include luxury, high-end travelers and special occasion celebrators, such as honeymooners, birthday guests and wedding parties. “The magical allure of Tsala is irresistible to those who appreciate exclusivity, fine fare, romance and ad50 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com

venture,” Ian says. Tsala means “elevated resting place” in Swahili. “Spoil yourself with a massage in the comfort of your room with an in-room pamper treatment — nothing beats a full body massage next to your private pool, whilst the leaves rustle in the gentle breeze,” Ian says. “Enjoy a personalized picnic — which can be enjoyed either in the beautiful gardens on the Hunter Hotels Estate or in the privacy of your suite/villa in front of a crackling fire.” Tsala offers three dining experiences where all cuisine is exquisitely presented in the glass walled dining room. “For those wanting to enjoy the morning sunshine, the spectacular dining deck, suspended above the forest floor, is the perfect spot. For a casual a la carte lunch and dinner, our award-winning Zinzi Restaurant is just a stroll from Tsala. A third option is our refined countrystyle dining at Sage at Hunter’s Country House,” Ian outlines. In terms of local cuisine, Anne says, “Africa is a multi-cultural country that is reflected in their multicultural cuisine. They are big meat eaters and you can get local steaks or imported ones at many restaurants. The South African Braai (barbecue) is famous, but also try ostrich steak. Fish along the coast is great.” In Plett, most restaurants serve continental-style cuisine. Several specialize in traditional South African
foods, and there are some very good seafood restaurants. Patty recommends The Fat Fish, Emily Moon, Enrico’s Ristorante, Nguni and Zinzi. Exploring the magic of the Garden Route is a mustdo while in South Africa. Ian recommends whale, dolphin and seal watching with Ocean Blue Adventures and experiencing Plettenberg Bay’s marine life via boat. There are also beautiful hiking trails. “Tsitsikamma, Featherbed and Robberg are a few of the Nature Reserves in the area that offer a variety of different walks and hikes. From tough 4-hour treks along the scenic Robberg Peninsula to the more relaxed wander through the Garden of Eden Forest,” Ian says. The Robberg Peninsula jets out into the Indian Ocean. Anne especially enjoys wine tasting and vineyard exploring while visiting this destination. Ian recommends taking a meandering tour of the wineries around Plettenberg Bay. In fact, the area has become an emerging wine region — with mostly sauvignon blanc, pinot noir and méthode cap classique wines (the traditional Champagne method), according to Patty. “The area currently hosts 16-plus boutique wine farms, and there is an annual Plett Wine & Bubbly Festival that is very popular during September and October.” After retreating back to Tsala after a day of exploring, Ian recommends, “Watch the sun set over the treetops, with a glass of bubbles in hand, from the privacy of your own balcony set high above the forest floor.”

ith a name like The Saloon, you might expect Coconut Point’s newest restaurant and bar to have an extensive drink program — and it does. A leather-bound book contains more than 250 spirits, over 50 craft cocktails and dozens of beer and wine selections. “You’re sure to find something that fits your flavor profile,” says General Manager
Chris Principato. Creating the inventive cocktails, at times, was a collaboration between the culinary team and the bar staff. The kitchen roasts peppers and grapes, and makes the syrups used behind the bar. Owner Skip Quillen didn’t want to carry the same big name liquor brands that every other bar does, saying, “All kinds of people are making spirits, and we wanted to give attention to them, too; we want to have fun.”

The Curse of the Leprechaun comes with a sidecar and strainer. Made with Pasote Blanco Tequila, homemade strawberry shrubs, hellfire bitters, roasted jalapeño syrup and muddled mint. It’s garnished with a charred “long hot” pepper, a fiery concoction with a near perfect balance of sweet and heat. The End of the Rainbow is fresh with a great herbal quality. Made with gin, St. Germain elderflower and fresh citrus, it’s garnished with wood grilled grapes, making a superb Instagram photo. The Prosecco Smash is a beautifully layered cocktail with fresh strawberry and homemade thyme syrup on the bottom. Grapes are added next, then prosecco. The 60 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
bubbles are lighter than the syrup, which enables the grapes to stay suspended in the middle of the glass. Star fruit and fresh sage complete the festive drink. The Saloon Punch looks cool with a scoop of lemon sorbet floating in blueberry moonshine and limoncello. The Saloon Mary is more than a drink; it’s a meal with skewers of shrimp, bacon, a hamburger slider and more. For such detail and care, the prices are affordable in this sophisticated yet casual bar with a happy hour that lasts all night with drink and food specials. Whatever you do, try the Bubble Bread; the seven-cheese garlic bread is decadent and delicious. “We want customers to experiment, have fun and not be intimidated,” Skip says. “At the end of the day, we want people to be happy.” By all accounts, he’s accomplished that.

he world of vintage vehicles has its own, sometimes vexing vocabulary. To a casual observer, it might seem strange that American cars are labeled “antiques” only 25 years after they’re produced. That means American cars that rolled off the assembly line in 1993
became antiques this year, according to the national standards of the Antique Automobile Club of America. You can look forward to seeing vehicles from 1903 through 1993 at the 30th annual Depot Show hosted by the Naples-Marco Island Region of the AACA on Saturday, March 24 at the restored railroad depot in Naples, home to the Naples Depot Museum. John McNally with his 1962 Chevrolet Corvair
Richard DeSchane with his restored 1903 Oldsmobile.
Gary Doner, who has coordinated the event for 11 years, says this year’s show will spotlight 95 antique vehicles, some rare enough to be valued at over $1 million. The lineup includes a PierceArrow and a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, both made in 1926, a 1929 Packard 640 Sport Phaeton and an extremely rare 1930-model Cord. Newer rarities include a 1941 Pontiac woodie wagon and a 1991 Nissan Figaro, made in Japan but never sold in America. Naples car collector Richard DeSchane will show his 1903 Oldsmobile Model R curved-dash runabout, rekindling the first days Americans of means could retire their horse-drawn carriages in favor of innovative horseless buggies powered by small gasoline engines capable of delivering speeds of 20 miles per hour. Most owners were doctors, lawyers, bankers and others who could afford the $600 price tag. “Just think about life for a driver in 1903,” the retired 3M executive suggests. “There were no paved roads, no street signs and no stop lights. You had to buy your gasoline from a general store or a hardware supply, the same gas you would 64 | MARCH 2018 | grandeurmagazine.com
use in your kitchen stove.” His ‘03 Oldsmobile steers with a bicycle handle mounted on a tiller, like a boat, pre-dating the steering wheel. “It’s basically a wooden box with no fenders and no enclosure around the passengers,” Richard says. “And the wheels don’t have any brakes. There’s only a hand brake.” Automakers added rear wheel brakes in 1904 to comply with a new Pennsylvania law. Ten more years would pass before the nation’s first electric stoplight was installed in Cleveland, Ohio. Oldsmobile sold about 10,000 of these early automobiles from 1901 through 1906, according to Richard, “and only 300 to 400 are still around, worldwide.” Richard first spotted his car parked in the barn of a Minnesota friend who had been storing it there since 1957. They made a deal, and Richard began a five-year journey to restore the horseless carriage to its original condition. “The most interesting part was the hunt,” he recalls. “I collected a ton of literature. This was one of the first ‘brass cars,’ because there was so much brass inside and out. I had to build a whole new wooden body, with a black tufted leather
seat and lots of brass and buckles.” Drive forward 33 years along the timeline of American automotive history, and you will see how dramatically the industry changed after 1903. Meet Wes Kunkle, born in a Detroit suburb, who taught shop, drafting and business in Naples high schools for 25 years after working as an engineer in the Motor City area. His 1936 Ford Model 68 sedan won first place two years ago at the national AACA winter show. Painted in its original Washington Blue shade with its standard tan mohair seats, this model was designed to be a family car, Wes says. The design features a humpback trunk with room for suitcases and travel gear. When Wes bought the car from a local car collector in 2014, the odometer read about 46,000 miles — an extremely low reading for a car that was 78 years old at the time. Searching for an explanation, he learned that for 50 years the previous owners had lived within five miles of the Detroit factory where their Ford was made. Also, Wes adds, “most Ford Detroit factory workers took the trolley to work, so many families drove their
cars only on weekends. During Michigan winters, it was common for them to store their cars on blocks to protect them from snow and ice until spring came. Originally, the car had a pinstripe. That was pointed out to Wes by a man who noticed the restored Ford at a recent car show. When the two introduced themselves, Wes realized the man knew what he was talking about. He was Alex Olivera, an original member of the legendary California custom team Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and the Rat Finks. Alex was known as “the little old line maker” and was spending winters in Naples. A few days after they met, says Wes, “Alex came over to my place and painted the original pinstripe on the car. He made it right.” According to Wes, Alex Olivera and another man are the only two left from the original 13-man team of Rat Finks. Another car entered in this year’s Depot Show is among the most controversial ever sold in the U.S. Early on, Motor Trend magazine crowned the Chevrolet Corvair “Car of the Year.” However, in response to years of attacks by self-proclaimed consumer advocate Ralph Nader
Wes Kunkle with his 1936 Ford Model 68

in his blockbuster book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” the Corvair eventually made the list of “The Worse Cars Ever Made” published by Time magazine. But some doubted Nader’s research. “This car was a blast to drive. Its 4-wheel independent suspension made it very nimble on the road,” says retired Massachusetts Institute of Technology scientist John McNally. “I carpooled back and forth to MIT in Boston every day for two years. We never had any trouble.” General Motors sold 1.7 million Corvairs from 1960 through 1969. John’s is a 1962 Monza, equipped with a slightly larger engine than the standard Corvair. A “For Sale” ad in the car club’s newsletter had shown a red Corvair convertible with its original top and paint job. After 49,000 miles, the engine had given up the ghost. John rose to the challenge and restored the car, replacing the sludge-filled gas tank with a new one, rebuilding the carburetors and replacing the old fuel pump with an electric version. John wishes he knew more about his Corvair’s history. He has learned
that the original owner bought it in Rock Island, Illinois. His only other clue appeared when John opened an old box stored in the car’s trunk and found a 1972 newspaper from Palm Beach inside. So far, his 1962 Corvair Monza convertible is keeping its secrets. John, Wes, Richard and Gary all plan to drive their vintage vehicles to the Depot at 1051 Fifth Avenue South on Saturday, March 24 for the show, where visitors can get up close and personal with the cars and their owners. This club has been raising money for local charities since 1981. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
If you haven’t visited the campus in some time, you may be surprised at the amount of public art at the university, providing students and the community at large enriching cultural perspectives on higher education and the campus’ connection to the Southwest Florida environment. There are some 100 works in FGCU’s public art collection — thanks to the Florida Art in State Buildings program. There are some outdoor, large-scale works, such as Raymond Lutgert’s brushed stainless steel “Human Race” welcoming visitors in front of the Lutgert College of Business. Mark T. Fuller’s expression of a molecule fueled by solar power, “Depend du Soleil,” graces the side of the science building, Seidler Hall. His “Whatever You Say, Dear, 2011” casts shadows on the side of the Bower School of Music — fittingly, powder-coated, laser-cut aluminum plates in the shape of music notes. To see stunning interior works, visit the Marieb Hall and the library. A few tips: Download a campus map, get a visitor parking sticker at the kiosk at the main entrance and try to visit during spring break: March 5-10.
The mysteries and beauty of the swamp and largest oldgrowth bald cypress forest in North America are enough to make a visit here worthwhile. Located a half hour drive east of Naples, it’s also home to a gallery at the Blair Audubon Visitor Center that features wildlife- and nature-themed works by a different artist every two months. Through March, the gallery is showcasing the acrylic and gouache paintings of Victoria Hamachek, whose subjects range from hummingbirds and redshouldered hawks to bobcats and butterflies. No doubt you will become an artist yourself — a prolific photographer — because photo ops abound along the boardwalk.

INDIAN ELEGANCE Overlooking the Caloosahatchee River, the home of Tej Ram and Sunita Sharma combines traditional Indian décor with modern design.
T
ej Ram and Sunita Sharma say their home is a simple one, yet it is full of the things they love and perfectly fits the lifestyle they enjoy. Their home is peaceful yet colorful, elegant yet comfortable. It combines their Indian heritage with a more modern look. Right from the front door, the view is stunning. About 95 feet of sliding glass doors lead to a patio and infinity edge pool that seems to flow right into the Caloosahatchee River. The couple designed the entire house to take advantage of the gorgeous views. The bright living room with its white couches and pillows in a palate of colors provide a comfortable place to sit and admire the water. A comfortable red couch just beyond the kitchen counter facing
the water is a favorite spot to sit. “That is where we have tea in the morning,” Tej says. “We also have tea outside by the pool. Daytime is when we work, and then in the evening we gather there again.” “We enjoy our morning tea on the patio,” Sunita adds. “There is fresh air and the peaceful sound of the waves and the birds chirping.” Inside, the spacious area features a mixture of modern and traditional. Long gold curtains hang beneath red draping valances on the windows. Photos of their daughters in traditional dress adorn the walls. A shiny black piano provides a centerpiece. The adjacent family room, kitchen and dining area have more modern décor. There’s also a lot of open space where Sunita and Tej enjoy practicing dance moves, especially the tango, cha-cha, swing and modern dances.
In the prayer room of the home of Tej Ram and Sunita Sharma is a shelf with little statuettes of many of the Gods they pray to. The sprawling home along the Caloosahatchee River blends the modern with the family’s traditional Indian style.

“It is the perfect place for dancing,” Tej says. The family room soars two stories with another set of windows above spraying more natural light into the home. A wood staircase leads to a loft that gives a picturesque overlook of the downstairs. “This is the best view of the house,” Sunita says. “I love this view.” The loft also leads to a front outside balcony. “We love the front balcony,” Sunita says. “It gives us a view of the front yard. This spot reminds me of my mom’s house. It reminds us of the special feeling of home in India.” Upstairs, the master bedroom provides the couple with another place to enjoy the views. “We enjoy the balcony,” Sunita says. “It is special for us. We never get tired of the view. It looks different every day. This house is mostly about the view and taking advantage of the view.” The bedroom also gives them a homey feel with its traditional Indian red colors on the bed and sitting area. Sparkling crystal chandeliers are found throughout the house, even in the master bathroom. Their grown daughters’ bedrooms also have terraces that overlook the river. “Many of the houses we have seen, the views were from the master bedroom and the living room. We have two daughters, and we wanted their rooms to have that view, too,” Tej says. Their oldest daughter is in medical school and their youngest starts medical school in the fall. The young women enjoy visiting their home in Fort Myers during holidays and school breaks. “This is an incentive for the college kids to come back home and enjoy the break here,” Sunita says.

Sunita and Tej love natural light in the home, so when their youngest daughter’s bathroom was designed as an inside room with no windows, they asked the builder to create a way to let the light in. A solar tube was installed there and in a half bathroom that was also
windowless. The tube is a bowl-like structure on top of the roof that collects sunlight and shoots it down a tube where it spreads out in the room. “Otherwise it would have been the darkest room in the house, and I like rooms lit up,” Sunita says.

grand | OPEN DOOR Sunita and Tej are both very active and enjoy their home gym. Tej has run a full marathon, and both Tej and Sunita have run half marathons. Tej is a golfer and the entire family loves to dance. “As we grow older, we realize that health is very important,” Sunita says. “It is good to have a gym in the house. There is no set time to go. He loves to do pull-ups. My favorite is the elliptical.” Throughout the bedrooms, the loft family room and even in the laundry room are family photos. Many of them depict the couple and their children in colorful traditional Indian clothing. “When I am folding laundry, I can look at photos of the children,” Sunita says. Downstairs, a spacious guest bedroom has a couch with colorful Indian patterned pillows. The queen-size bed has a bookcase headboard full of children’s books that belonged to their daughters. This room also has sliding glass doors that lead to the patio overlooking the river. “This is our future bedroom someday when we can’t climb upstairs,” Sunita says. Downstairs they also enjoy the movie room. A large red comfy couch faces a 135-inch screen. Two lounger chairs also provide comfortable places to sit. Sunita and Tej say they don’t watch television much, instead they love watching movies in the evenings. One of their favorites is “Mamma Mia.” But they also really love watching Bollywood films. “Bollywood movies take preference,” Sunita says. “We love watching movies on the big screen.” “Bollywood is not in theaters, so we watch it in here,” Tej adds. “Netflix has a lot of Bollywood movies.” On the other side of the home is the most special room in the house: The prayer room. Bells hang from the ceiling. A small alter is set with offerings. “This is very traditional for us,” Sunita says. “This is our most special, peaceful room.” A shelf on the wall holds figurines of the gods. Bananas sit beside the alter as an offering. A chandelier gives the room elegance. It’s a simple room with all the special things they need for family prayers. David Gydosh, president of Tundra Homes, says it was one of the most elaborate homes he has built. “The size for one thing and all the high ceilings,” he says about what makes the home and lanai, which span about 7,000 square feet, so special. “It’s just the openness of the big entry room and the tall sliders that open up the view to the river. They have that big kitchen that is open to the rest of the house. The big lanai going out to the pool deck area is nice. The media room is pretty neat and the prayer room.” The home of Sunita and Tej is elegant and has many special rooms, sweeping views and traditional Indian décor mixed with a modern look, but the couple say their home is really a simple house in its design. For them it’s not about luxury, it’s about enjoying their time at home. “It’s a simple design,” Tej says. “It kind of reflects our open hearts,” Sunita adds. “We embrace the simple life. Beauty lies in simplicity. Happiness lies in simplicity.”

Above that are many windows that give extra light to the room and also offer views from the upstairs loft that overlooks the family room. • The family enjoys spending time on their patio that overlooks the Caloosahatchee River.
