NEW FEATURES WITH WINDOWS 11

continued This month’s column continues the discussion regarding new changes in Windows 11 operating system.

Last month Cappie discussed: the design changes (new Default Start Menu, New User Interface, end of Live Tiles), the improved Microsoft Store including the use of Android Apps in Windows, replacement of Skype by the Teams App, increased tablet features etc.

Here are some additional new features available in Windows 11: Start Menu—Most people are familiar with accessing the Start menu by clicking the Windows icon on the Taskbar at the bottom lefthand corner of the screen. There is also a lesser known second Start menu that makes accessing important features like the Control Panel, the Command Prompt, and the Task Manager much easier. You can access the menu by right clicking the Windows Start icon or by pressing the Windows key + X. Save Battery Life—To save your battery when it’s running low, you have the option to control which apps are running in the background. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery. Tap Battery saver and then adjust when battery saver temporarily limits getting notifications and other background activities.

Show File Extensions in

File Explorer—By default, Microsoft hides file extensions. Many times, it is necessary to look for specific file types, especially when dealing with photos. To see file extensions in File Explorer: Click Search on the Task Bar, type File Explorer Options > View and uncheck the box Hide extensions for known file types> Apply> OK. Screen Shot—There are now at least seven ways to take a screen shot in Windows 11 (including shortcuts from previous versions): n Windows key + Print Screen key—captures/saves a picture of the entire screen and places it in Pictures>Screenshots folder n Windows key + Shift + S— captures just a part of your screen. This will open the

Snip & Sketch tool which allows you to click and drag to create a screenshot and then saves it to your Clipboard. n The Snipping Tool—not on the list of apps in the Start menu but is still there via the search bar. Type “snipping tool” into the Search Bar. Choose

Open> New to begin the process (default is rectangular but you can also use free form, full screen, and window snips).

Note: it automatically copies your image to the clipboard but does not automatically save it – you must manually save it in the app before you exit. n Print Screen—to capture your entire screen, tap the Print

Screen (PrtScn) key. Your screenshot will be copied to the clipboard. Then open an image editing tool (such as Microsoft

Paint), paste the screenshot into the app and save the file from there. You can also set the PrtScn button to open the

Snip & Sketch tool by going to Settings > Ease of Access >

Keyboard and toggle on Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping under Print

Screen Shortcut. n Windows Logo + Volume

Down—is especially useful if you have a Surface Pro:

Capture an entire screen and automatically save the screenshot when you tap the

Windows Logo + and Volume

Down and it will be saved to the Pictures > Screenshots folder. n Alt + PrtScn—will snap your currently active window and copy the screenshot to the clipboard. Open the shot in an image editor to save it. n Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar—to take a screenshot if your PC has no

Print Screen key. It will then be saved to the Pictures >

Screenshots folder.

Pinned Taskbar Items—can be opened by clicking on the icon or using a keyboard shortcut: Windows key + [Number key], the number key corresponding to the position of the pinned program on the Taskbar.

Getting rid of unused

Apps—Go to Settings > System > Storage. Tap Show more categories > Cleanup recommendations and choose what apps you have not used in a long time.

Minimize every open Window

except the Active one in use— the desktop gets cluttered with too many open windows; you can quickly minimize them all except the one you are currently working in. Go to Settings>

System> Multitasking >

check the box Title bar window shake. Just click the title bar of the window you want to remain open to select it, hold the mouse down and move the window back and forth quickly (shaking it), and all other open windows will minimize, leaving only the one you've shaken open. Using these additional new options can make your computing easier with Windows 11.

Water Conservation Program

The City of Surprise Water Conservation Program is an important component of the City’s water resource portfolio management strategy. Its purpose is to educate and promote the efficient use of water across sectors in the community including residential, commercial and industrial uses. Our goal is to realize reductions in per capita water use while balancing a healthy, sustainable quality of life for our residents. For more information go to surpriseaz.gov/ WaterConservation

Drop off recycling

Surprise offers residents a drop-off recycling option to help ensure items are being recycled. Surprise has three locations to take material to throughout the valley, each of which the recycled goods do get recycled. By staffing our drop-off location, we have built relationships with the vendors to ensure all material is 100% clean. There is a positive impact on both the City and the vendor by limiting the sorting the vendor has to do and helps in making sure the material will continue to be recycled and not diverted to the landfill. The goal for the drop-off location is to ensure we have 100% clean, recycled material.
