2011 WAS A TURNING POINT with 4 and 5 star reviews far and wide. We want to build on this. We are thinking big: buying singers in the world market and presenting heavier repertoire which, as was proved with Tristan & Isolde, is an utterly consuming experience in the little pink theatre. Three festivals back the operas cost £1.4m. In 2012 this figure is £1.9m. That is how ambitious we are. By next summer the seven full length windows of the 1823 Orangery will allow you to step from that little pink theatre straight into the Arcadian landscape. A TALE OF OBSESSION and deceit, Tchaikovsky’s penultimate opera is recognised as one of his greatest works. Hermann, a young officer, falls in love with Lisa, a girl he’s never spoken to, and who is engaged to the Prince Yeletsky. Hermann uses Lisa to gain access to her grandmother, a Countess, who won a fortune in the casino with the secret of “the three cards”. Hermann is determined to discover that secret, but the Countess dies before revealing it. In his obsession to find the winning combination, Hermann loses Lisa, his mind and ultimately his own life.

MOZART’S FIRST mature opera takes place against the backdrop of the Trojan Wars. The King of Crete, Idomeneo, is fighting for the Greeks against the Trojans and has left his son, Idamante, to rule in his absence. Elettra, a Greek princess, falls for Idamante, but his heart belongs to Ilia, a Trojan princess held prisoner on the island. Idomeneo, on his triumphant return, is caught in a storm at sea and pledges to Neptune a sacrifice – of the first living thing he encounters on shore. Alas, it is his son.

SEAT WIDTHS If you are unable to fit into a single seat you will need to talk to the box office and possibly purchase additional seating. Some of the loose seating in boxes provides greater flexibility. CONDITIONS OF SALE (i) If you are unable to use your tickets and we are unable to sell them, we will allow a member of staff to use them. This avoids gaps in the theatre. (ii) Tickets may only be used by the purchaser and may not be sold on (iii) Grange Park Opera is a charity. To make your ticket money work to our best advantage we have split the ticket prices into two parts: one part is a donation and the remainder is liable for VAT. The donation element at Nevill Holt is £30–£45 and at The Grange it is £30–£70. By doing this there is no additional cost to ticket buyers and more of your ticket money can go towards the operas. Gift Aid regulations mean we can also claim a further amount per ticket from HMRC. This practice is used by many charities. Without the donation element, we are unable to cover the festival costs. We are legally bound, however, to point out that the donation element is optional (iv) Latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium and there will be no re-admission, unless there is a suitable pause (v) The management reserves the right to refuse admission or change or cancel the advertised programme and artists TICKETS RETURNED FOR RESALE OR EXCHANGE Tickets may be returned for resale only after all other tickets have been sold. Contact the box office to check availability prior to returning tickets. We cannot guarantee the sale of any tickets returned regardless of availability or demand. The 2012 Festival will cost about £3.4m and receives no public subsidy. Half the income is from ticket sales and the other half from donations. We think of our donors as a family who are investing in the art form; in singers, in developing young artists, in attracting young audiences, in education and in improving everything that happens at the festival. WE WANT YOUNG PEOPLE to get into the habit of opera – but prices can be prohibitive. On selected nights we have seats for younger people: some discounted and some free. METEORS are under 35 years old and can buy seats for £30. MUSICAL CHAIRS are free seats for young people who otherwise could not come to the opera. OPENING TIMES Guests arrive from 3.30 pm to enjoy a glass of champagne before the performance which begins at 5.20 DRESS Most guests wear evening dress (black tie/ long or short dress) but . . . we encourage the audience to think outside the dressing up box. So if you want to dust off that luminous green dinner jacket or go Geisha we would love it! DOGS The head of the car park will take care of your dog for the evening for a modest charge. There are no kennels but they will be fed, watered, walked and loved. PICNIC TABLES It is easy to book picnic furniture and there are quite a few tables, chairs and benches on the terraces and in the parterre. If you bring your own furniture, it can only be placed on the lower East Terrace. No barbecues. No erected structures. Generally, we try to preserve elegance BELLS There is only one bell and that means start moving to the theatre PLEASE

SPECIAL ACCESS FACILITIES An able-bodied person must accompany a guest without good mobility. On the Booking Form indicate whether or not you require wheelchair space or if you have other specific seating needs. The Grand Tier is not suitable for people with limited mobility. Cars can drop guests in the Goldfish garden before 3.30. There are a number of wheelchairs that guests can borrow. Mobility scooters must be parked in the car park. TRAINS & TAXIS It has taken us 15 years to realise that .... it is best to take a train to Basingstoke (about £20) and then a taxi (about £30). There are normally many taxis there. (The alternative is Winchester Station £30 and then a £20 taxi but there are many many more trains going to Basingstoke)
