free gift cards to local businesses in this issue! by ALL OF US AT GRANGER DOES IT MAGAZINE

ENTRY DEADLINE: FEB 11, 2016

s Granger’s only artist-owned publication, we do things differently. Aside from being active members of the Society of Professional Journalists who are devoted to providing award-winning coverage of life in Granger, we’re also committed to improving the community. You may remember that last year we spearheaded Granger’s anti-litter campaign. We’ll have an update for you on that in the next issue. We also provide a comprehensive Granger Crime report to help keep you aware of criminal activity reported in your neighborhood. The point is: we care about Granger, Indiana and the people who live here. That’s one of the reasons we also give away things like Notre Dame Football tickets, theatre passes and even cash. And 2016 will be no different. To kick off the new year, we’ve partnered with local businesses to give away about $500 in gift cards in this issue! Here’s how it works: the giveaways are

scattered throughout the magazine. You can spot them by the green box with the money sign. Each one has its own entry code. To enter one of the giveaways, simply send an email to giveaway@ grangerdoesit.com with the code in the subject line and your contact information in the body of the email. If you want to enter all of them (why not, they’re free!), just write “all giveaways” in your subject. After about a month, we’ll draw the winners at random. It’s that easy. No entry fees, no marketing tricks, no catches. We’re even throwing in two extra $50 prepaid Visa cards! And rest assured that we’ll keep your contact information secure and won’t share it with anyone. We thank you for your continued support in our mission to encourage a love of reading. It's an honor to write for such an amazing community! We look forward to receiving your entries into the many free giveaways scattered throughout the first issue of Granger Does It Magazine for 2016 :)

Don't hurry, be happy

A Granger artist reveals her secret to getting more out of life by STAFF WRITER

E

very January, millions of people around the world ask themselves one question: where did the time go? For many, each year seems to pass more quickly than the one before it – especially if you’re trapped in the fast-paced current of life’s daily demands. Granger resident Cathy McCormick agrees. “In our urban culture and busy lifestyles, it helps to slow down and appreciate our surroundings,” she said. “I think it’s important for people to realize they need a break.” Cathy finds her break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life through art. An awardwinning pastel painter, she uses her passion as a way to appreciate important things in life that are often easy to overlook – like Michiana’s natural beauty. “I enjoy focusing on the landscape in my subject matter. We live in a beautiful location.

$

There’s rolling landscape around the St. Joseph River, farm fields, interesting terrain along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and much more. We have a lot to see and a lot to enjoy here. We’re really lucky.” Cathy discovered her love for painting during a pastel class she took while living in Phoenix. “I kept re-enrolling in the class, and when the teacher eventually moved away, he asked me to take over.” Since then, she's developed an impressive portfolio. Just last month, Northern Indiana Artists, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of contemporary creative art, honored her with an award for a painting of an Indiana farm called September Song. But capturing Indiana's beauty on a canvas isn't the only way Cathy finds meaning through art. She also enjoys helping others discover how art can provide peace in their own daily lives.

For nearly 15 years, Cathy has taught pastel painting and drawing at the South Bend Museum of Art. She also teaches art at the Battell Community Center in Mishawaka. “As a teacher, you see people growing and doing things they never thought they could do. That itself is very enriching. I hear from people in my classes all the time that becoming an artist has improved their lives because they have an increased appreciation for our landscape and surroundings.“ This Spring, Cathy will teach a pastel landscape class on Tuesdays from 6:30pm-9:30pm, and beginners drawing on Thursdays from 1:30pm-4:30pm at the South Bend Museum of Art, located in the Century Center in downtown South Bend. Both classes last eight weeks and are open to artists of all skill levels. For enrollment information, contact 574-235-9102 or info@ southbendart.org. In addition to teaching, Cathy also works hard to unite the artistic community in Michiana. “When I moved here, there was no pastel society. I had it in the back of my mind that we should have one. In 2006, I decided to coordinate a meeting to see how many people would show up." About 40 artists attended, marking the beginning of what is now the Northern Indiana Pastel Society – the only pastel society in Indiana. In a few months, the society will celebrate its 10th year anniversary. Cathy, who serves as President, couldn't be prouder. “We have a strong network of pastel artists in northern Indiana and southern Michigan. We have both nationally known pastel artists and strong regional artists in our area. I think we’re making a big statement for the medium of pastel.“ The Northern Indiana Pastel Society, which is open to the public, hosts meetings every other month, as well as art shows throughout the year at area locations, including Granger venues like Penn High School. You can learn more about the society at www.nipastelsociety.org. For Cathy, pastel painting is much more than an artistic medium. It’s a way to get more out of life. “The Michiana landscape has a serene quality that you can bring to your art and communicate that to those who view your art. Doing so can help you become 'in the moment' so that you can have a little bit of tranquility that I think everyone needs as a break from their daily lives.”

Granger students win awards at state robotics competition by STAFF WRITER

A

few months ago, we took you on a behindthe-scenes tour of the new Granger Exploration And Robotics Studio (GEARS), a community center devoted to the FIRST Lego League (FLL) robotics competition. We’re happy to report that three GEARS teams, and a couple others from the area, have won awards at the 2015 FIRST Lego League Indiana Championship Tournament, which took place December 12th in Fort Wayne. Out of approximately 300 teams in Indiana, only 52 were invited to compete in the state championship. You might recall that in FLL tournaments, teams of up to ten children program an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field, and then develop a solution to a real world problem that they’ve identified. The teams are also judged by their adherence to FLL Core Values, which include teamwork, friendly competition, sharing experiences and having fun. FLL Team 1920, named Terra Troopers, won the Indiana Team Outreach Service and Sharing Award and placed First in Core Values Inspiration.

8 | Granger Does It Magazine

FLL Team 13059, named Grand Theft Automation II, placed Second in Project Research. And FLL Team 18067, named Holy LEGOs, placed Second in Robot Mechanical Design. Pretty cool, being that this was Holy LEGOs’ rookie year. “It was amazing to see so many students from Michiana perform well at the regional and state tournaments, especially those who were competing for the first time,” said Scott Chase, founder of GEARS. Scott also coaches team 1920, which is one of only three FLL teams in Indiana advancing to an International Open this Spring. In addition to the teams from GEARS who were honored at this year’s competition, several more from the region also earned awards, including the Beiger Bots from Beiger Elementary School and Team Landfill from Horizon Elementary School. Granger Does It Magazine congratulates not only the teams in Granger and the surrounding Michiana community who competed at the FLL Indiana Championship Tournament, but all the teams in the region who worked hard during the 2015 FLL season.

It's not too late for New Year’s (Financial) Resolutions submitted by KEMP CUNNINGHAM

2016

is finally upon us. If you’re like many people, you have a New Year’s resolution to improve your life, such as hitting the gym more, learning a new language or taking a cooking class. All are worthy goals, but why not add some financial resolutions as well? Below is a list of simple things you can do to improve your finances for not just 2016, but the rest of your life. 1. Pay yourself first. Even if you aren’t living “paycheck to paycheck,” you probably don’t have much trouble spending your money. There’s always something that you or a family member needs; always a repair required for your home or your car; always one more bill to pay. But if you are going to achieve your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement, you need to invest consistently. So before you pay everyone else, pay yourself first by having some money automatically moved from your checking or savings account each month into an investment. 2. Take advantage of your opportunities. If you have a 401(k) or similar plan at work, take full advantage of it. Contribute as much as you can afford – or at least enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is offered – and choose the mix of investments that give you the potential to achieve the growth you need at a level of risk with which you are comfortable. 3. Focus on the long term. In the short term,

you might be excused for not wanting to invest. The headlines are typically scary, the financial markets are frequently volatile and the future often looks murky. Yet, if you can look past the uncertainties of today and keep your focus on tomorrow, you will find it easier to follow a disciplined investment strategy that gives you the opportunity to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. 4. Don’t be driven by fear. When the market is down, investors tend to react with fear. Specifically, they rush to sell their investments, afraid that if they don’t “cut their losses,” they might sustain even bigger ones. If you can get past this feeling, you may find that a down market can offer you the chance to buy quality investments at good prices. 5. Forget about the “hot stocks.” You’ll hear friends, co-workers and talking heads on television tout today’s “hot stocks.” But by the time you might hear about them, they may have cooled off – and, in any case, they might not be appropriate for your needs. Forget about “getting rich quick in the market” – it probably won’t happen. True investment success requires patience and persistence. 6. Cut down on your debts. It’s easy to pile up debts, but a lot harder to get rid of them. Yet, if you can reduce your debt load even moderately, you’ll free up money you could use to invest. So look for ways to conserve, cut back and consolidate – it will be worth the effort. Making these resolutions – and sticking to them – can help you as you work toward achieving your financial goals.

An 11-year-old with a pretty cool business

FREE 1-hour

by STAFF WRITER In many ways, Cierra Konkle is a typical 11-year-old girl. She loves shopping, hanging with her friends and listening to music. But Cierra also does something pretty extraordinary for a sixth grader—she runs her own business. Launched in Spring of 2015, Cierra Scoops & More provides pet cleanup services for busy dogowners in her Osceola neighborhood. That's right, she scoops poop! It might sound icky, but if you have a four-legged family member, you know just how important - and time consuming - this task is. With help from her mother Cathy, Cierra is quickly learning what it takes to be the boss. She has her own scooping equipment, sets her own rates, and enters her own accounting data into QuickBooks. Cierra even attends local networking events with her mother where she loves handing out her business card to prospective clients. Since Cierra is in sixth grade, her first priority is school. But she finds time in the late afternoon to offer her cleanup services to dog owners in her neighborhood. This Spring, Cierra hopes to expand by offering a special Spring Cleanup service to pet owners who live outside her neighborhood, including Granger. For $25-$40 (depending on the size of your yard and number of dogs), she will pick up the poo that has been piling up in your yard all winter! If you're interested in Spring Cleanup service from Cierra Scoops & More, you can reach her via Cathy at 574-259-6181 or via email at cierrascoops@ yahoo.com. Nice job, Cierra!

best THINGS TO DO IN THE

COLD!

#1: ICE BUBBLES

Ice bubbles are super fun on cold days. All you need are regular soap bubbles. If the temperature is low enough, you can blow the bubbles into the frigid air and watch them freeze almost instantly. If it's below zero, you can even make them shatter! Give it a try :)

#2: snow art Creating snow art is inexpensive fun for the entire family. A few spray bottles, ordinary tap water and some food coloring are all you need to turn your snow-covered yard into a blank canvas! It might not turn out to be museum quality work, but snow art is definitely a creative way to enjoy winter.

#3: catching snowflakes They say every snowflake is unique. You and your family can test this theory with this little trick. Simply put a piece of black construction paper in the freezer. Once it's cold enough, you can catch snowflakes as they fall and closely examine their meticulous patterns and delicate beauty.

#4: ice skating OK, this one's nothing new, but it belongs on the list. Ice skating is a great way to get some exercise during the winter while also having fun. Compton Family Ice Arena at Notre Dame and Howard Park Ice Rink in South Bend both welcome public skating. Contact each rink for dates and hours :)

#5: snow ice cream This is easily one of the tastiest delights of winter. Just gather about 8 cups of freshly fallen snow (yes, make sure it's clean!). Then mix in a can of sweetened condensed milk, a 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract, and enjoy. If you come up with your own delicious recipe for snow ice cream, be sure to share it with us!

#6: the snow volcano Here's a fun science experiment for snowy days. First place an empty cup on the ground and pat some snow around it. Then pour a little baking soda into the cup, along with a few drops of food coloring. Now pour in some vinegar and watch your snow volcano erupt!

#7: awesome igloos This is by far the most difficult thing to do on this list. But if you have the time and patience to build an actual igloo, you'll probably have the coolest yard on the block! Forts are also fun, and a little easier, but if you really want to set the bar high, a functional igloo is the way to go.

#8: maple snow candy Maple snow candy is another tasty winter treat that's easy to make. Just heat some maple syrup on a saucepan and pour it over a bowl of freshly fallen snow. Wait a few minutes for the syrup to cool, then voila! You can even add popsicle sticks to turn them into maple snow pops.

#9: and of course, sledding! Last, but not least, is sledding. There's nothing quite like flying down a snow-covered hill on a sled or inner-tube. Talk about hours of outdoor excitement with friends and family! A quick Google search will bring up numerous places to go sledding in Michiana. Have fun!

the plan for a new park in granger moves forward by STAFF WRITER

H

arris Township is making progress toward their goal to build a new park in Granger. In October, Harris Township hosted its first public forum to get community feedback about their proposal to develop a multi-use pedestrian park on the east side of Elm Road, between Clay Fire Station 24 and Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library. The meeting revealed a preliminary design of the proposed park, produced by local firm Lehman & Lehman, which was instrumental in renovating Central Park in Mishawaka. The design is simply a jumping off point for the discussion, and represents a potential multi-phase, long-term plan that includes pavilions, a baseball field, a soccer field, a basketball court, a splash pad, open green space, a parking lot and more. In the latest development, the Granger Sunrise Rotary announced they are partnering with Harris Township. The Granger Sunrise Rotary is part of the worldwide organization, Rotary International, a volunteer organization of 1.2 million business and professional leaders

$

united to provide humanitarian service and help build goodwill and peace. The Granger Sunrise Rotary informed Granger Does It Magazine they are making a multi-year commitment to build a playground in the proposed area. Items that will be added to the park include swings, a slide, picnic tables and a pavilion. Construction on the playground is expected to begin this spring. The Granger Sunrise Rotary will be holding fundraisers in order to help finance the playground. They are currently recruiting volunteers to assist with installing new equipment and related duties. They are also accepting cash donations. To learn more about how you can get involved, visit www.harristownship.in. You can learn more about The Granger Sunrise Rotary at www.grangersunriserotary.com. As usual, Granger Does It Magazine will keep you updated about the latest developments. In the meantime, we welcome your feedback about Harris Township's proposal to build a new park in Granger.
