introduction learning the lifestyle for missional equipping It’ s a dangerous business, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don’ t keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to. Bilbo Baggins from The Lord Of The Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
Over the past 60 plus years, New Tribes Mission has acquired a wealth of experience in presenting the Gospel, and planting churches among a diversity of people groups and cultural contexts throughout the world. As a result, we have developed some key principles, strategies and tools for the effective communication of the Gospel. Having seen churches grow to maturity through strong Biblical foundations and the use of discipleship principles, New Tribes Mission desires that Christians, wherever they are, be equipped to communicate God’s love and truth. It is our hope that Christians everywhere will be moved to partner with God’s people to see His purposes in Christ achieved. For many believers, the challenge to reach others for Christ is a daunting task. New Tribes Mission has developed clear strategies based around some very core questions that provide a framework for answering this challenge in any context.
Question...
Who are you? Being who you are.
Understanding identity is key to exploring issues within your own context and culture or worldview. And understanding your identity in Christ is the starting point for ministry.
Where are you? Being a listener and observer who seeks to understand.
Learning to become a student of culture and worldview in order to be an effective communicator and relater.
What do you need to know? Being a living messenger.
Becoming a student of the Gospel, learning strategies for communicating the Gospel and living an authentic lifestyle out of a biblical worldview.
How do God’s people grow? Being willing to build God’s community.
Learning to partner with God as He connects people and sees them grow towards maturity. Sociologists have a theory of the looking-glass self: you become what the most important person in your life (wife, father, boss, etc.) thinks you are. How would my life change if I truly believed the Bible’ s astounding words about God’ s love for me, if I looked in the mirror and saw what God sees? What’s So Amazing About Grace, Philip Yancey

NEW TRIBES MISSION is offering two distinct single year training courses to equip believers for effective missional ministries wherever they seek to serve the Lord. The first year is an effective stand-alone course for believers who seek to have a missional ministry within their own current context, while the second year is more specifically geared for those who seek the skills and understanding required to live and minister in a cross-lingual cultural setting.
year 1 purpose statement NTM seeks to train believers, as part of their local church, to intentionally live a missional lifestyle within their local cultural context, equipping them with the skills and tools for evangelism, discipleship and church growth.
year 2 purpose statement NTM seeks to train believers, as sent by their local church, to intentionally live a missional lifestyle in a cross-cultural context, equipping them with linguistic and cultural analysis skills and effective strategies for evangelism, discipleship and church planting.

Learning will take place within relationships, from person to person, in group learning contexts, within mentoring contexts, formally, informally, intentionally and incidentally. God is in charge after all.
PRACTIC AL D
It’ s about taking responsibility for your growth as part of the body of Christ.
Personal goals may be gleaned from the teaching sessions, worship times, or in any interactions with God’s Word and may involve dealing with personal spiritual growth issues, relational issues and character formation. Community goals will involve outreach to the local area and
non-churched people and may mean joining a local sporting or activity group, or attending a course to intentionally interact with unsaved people in a meaningful, relational way.
Church goals are linked to the exploration of your part as a
member of the body of Christ; your willingness to learn how to minister effectively and practically to fellow course attendees, missional facilitators, home church, local church and other Christians according to your God given gifting and capacity.
‘Every aspect of life is an opportunity to live God’ s way’. Ghandi..remarked that if only Christians would live according to their belief in the teachings of Jesus, everyone would become a Christian. Willard and Simpson, Revolution of Character p76

You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life and death to you. It is easy to say you believe a rope to be strong and sound as long as you are merely using it to cord a box. But suppose you had to hang by that rope over a precipice. Wouldn’ t you then first discover how much you really trusted it? ...Only a real risk tests the reality of a belief. A Grief Observed, C.S. Lewis

re-mission assessment competency continuum measures Humbly submitting to one another in loving community. Ministry is about who you are and whose you are even more than what you can do.
A continuum style of assessment will be applied as appropriate to all aspects of the equipping process. Placing oneself on a continuum of learning implies that we are on a journey of growth, and that the destination is yet to be achieved, but progress is being made. The course participant, mentor/ equipper, peers and appropriate others will be involved in the dialogue and determination of growth and maturity in character and spiritual formation. Competency in the area of specific skill sets will be determined by the trainers as appropriate in dialogue with the student.
learner focused assessment Participants are to utilise the support and accountability structure in the mentoring relationship in order to establish personal goals for growth. These goals are to be observable, measurable and achievable and will form part of the assessment regimen. Course participants are encouraged to develop “a sober estimate of themselves,” and be willing to humbly submit to wise counsel, encouragement and exhortation as required during the training by others who live with them in community. Developing personal reflection tools to enhance self-examination of attitudes and actions is a vital component of the course to ensure ongoing growth and lifelong learning.
re-mission facilitator/ mentor trainers A missional lifestyle is caught more than taught - hence you’ll find your trainers are people committed to serving the Lord in every aspect and season of life. The trainers come from a wide variety of life experience and ministry backgrounds, serving the Lord with a missional mindset wherever they have been living, overseas or locally. While the course will be facilitated by up to four trainers per year group, there will be other itinerant specialists and community members called upon as required to input into the learning experiences.
One act of obedience is better than one hundred sermons. Dietrich Bonhoeffer There is a lack of missiologists. A missiologist evaluates the culture and uses discernment to find the idols, “so missionaries can be employed and churches can be missional” . “Theologians defend the truth of the Gospel and missiologists, then take it to the streets.” Mark Driscoll

factors for community life and learning Creating a community environment for effective learning to take place will involve course attendees and facilitators living and learning together as part of a team. The course requires full attendance and participation in all aspects of community life and learning.
family life and training It is never family verses ministry. Family ministers together.
We require both partners to be as fully involved in the course and learning community as is possible. For families with children this will entail prayerful consideration, consultation and communication as you work together with facilitators to ensure that both partners can be involved in the course. There are a range of options with a children’s room and play area beside the classroom. There are local childcare facilities available for families to access, local schools and a Christian school in nearby Port Macquarie. Should you have other requirements and considerations, please explore options with the course facilitators prior to commencing training. Working together as part of community factoring in the needs of family will be part of the learning process for you.
caring for the needs of others Care, cooperation and communication are the responsibility of each person who participates in the learning community. Rules tend to increase when relationships are not the focus. While duty of care, contingency and OH&S requirements will be outlined, as a Christian community the principles of Ephesians 4 are to be upheld by all. The campus is a smoke- and illicit drug- free facility and individuals are urged to maintain balance and integrity in the manner in which they live out their freedom in Christ.
property maintenance There will be regular workdays and times where all members of the community will care for the property and engage in other practical projects. People are required to maintain the inside and outside of their own accommodation while living here on the property.
camping and recreation There will be opportunities for occasional camping, hiking and other outdoor learning experiences as part of the training and life of the community. Please feel free to bring camping, sporting and other recreation items that you may find a use for while living in this area and attending the course. The Mid-North Coast area is noted for its fishing, boating, surfing and outdoor lifestyle and recreational opportunities. Sporting facilities are within a convenient distance from the training facility.
“G. K. Chesterton correctly remarked that the problem with Christianity is not that it has been tried and found wanting but that it has been found difficult and left untried. Ravi Zacharias
