Tips For Hiring a Freelance Grant Writer Grants provide the majority of the funds that most nonprofit agencies use to run operations on a daily basis or to implement special projects. If grant funding disappears, so do the organization's employees and programs, which would mean the ultimate demise of the organization itself. For non-profits to stay up and running, many hire a freelance writer to help them find and prepare grant proposals. Reasons for Hiring Experience. The primary reason non-profits has is because of their experience - experience in writing multiple grant applications and proposals, so they know what it takes to receive a grant. Grant applications tend to be complicated and time consuming to complete. The payoff makes the time investment worth it, but hiring a freelance grant writer can help to reduce the errors and omissions in the application that can render your application null and void before the grant reviewer ever reads it. That is right, some grant providers are so picky that if you submit the application in a font other than the one directed in the directions, your application may immediately be denied. Fresh Viewpoint. While there may be various individuals in the organization that knows the ins and the outs, they brings a new and fresh perspective. They may be able to identify benefits and disadvantages of your organization that members of the organization are too entrenched to see. However, they can review the organization from the outside in and choose the best parts of your organization to present in the best light as part of the grant application Process for Hiring 1. Can he/she provide a list of grants they have obtained and for which organizations 2. Find out how many years of experience the grant writer has specializing in grant writing for your type of organization 3. Check references by contacting the organizations to describe their experience working with the freelance grant writer 4. Especially focus on grant writers that have worked with organizations similar to your organization Since grants play such a pivotal role in non-profit organizations, it is important to find a grant writer that can help your organization obtain grants. Use these tips to understand how a grant writer can help your organization and how to go about finding the right grant writer for your organization.

Do You Need to Hire a Grant Writer?
In a recent informal study, over 100 random grant applications were reviewed. Of those, 32% of the applicants didn't even meet the basic qualifying requirements. Over half of the proposals had serious spelling and grammatical errors, which incidentally is one of the top reasons grant proposals are rejected. Where a budget was required, 65% of the budgets submitted merely listed the grant amount requested, rather than detailing the program budget. Quite a few other budgets magically added up to the exact maximum grant amount allowed. Almost all of the applications had no plan for sustained operations; the grant for which they applied was intended as the sole source of program funding. These flaws will almost always result in those proposals being passed up for ones where the writer took the time to think through the application, double-check and polish the document. After all, if the applicant can't be bothered to do a good job with the proposal, why would the funder have reason to believe the applicant would manage the grant appropriately? This doesn't mean that you have to hire a grant writer. It does mean that you should know the limitations you may be facing when writing your own grant proposals. So how do you know when to hire a grant writer? The first hint is if you have sent several proposals to various funders and have been rejected every time. At a minimum, you should be asking some trusted volunteers, board members and staff to review the grant guidelines along with the resulting proposals to see if they can pinpoint what you may be doing wrong. If their review doesn't result in some constructive feedback, you should hire a grant writer to help develop a good, basic proposal that you can tailor to various opportunities. The second indication is if you have no clue where to start looking for a grant. You may be able to hire a consultant or researcher just to find appropriate funders, which will save you a lot of time. If the grants you are interested in applying for aren't too competitive, you can hire a grant writer just to proofread your work and give you some pointers. If the grant program is very competitive or critical to your mission, you should hire a grant writer to work closely with you or your key personnel. And finally, if you have several proposals all due in the same time period, a grant writer can ease that burden. If you're just not ready to hire someone, there are several excellent books about grant writing. Pick one or two books and focus on the lessons contained in those books. There is so much information available that it is easy to get distracted, so keep your focus and get ready to do some great work!

Grant Writing - How Can 80% Be So Wrong? One of the top complaints from grant funders is the huge percentage of proposals they receive that do not even match their funding priorities. As many as eight out of ten proposals don't fit. That's 80%! If you want to set yourself up for failure in grant writing, be amongst this 80%. How can 80% be so wrong? Here are three reasons provided by funders themselves:
1. Stopping short. Grant seekers like you and I often do keyword searches on the Internet. Everyone does it. The Web is easy and fast. Let's look at an example. Say that a particular foundation shows up in your results. Instead of going further into the funder's description to see what they mean by their priorities, novice grant writers stop there. They submit a proposal without further research. Big mistake. 2. Failure to look at prior grantees. Another reason for the high percentage of off target proposals is that grant seekers often fail to look at prior grantees. It's not your fault, though. No one taught you to first seek out agencies and groups who have received grants from your target funder in the past. Contact one past grantee. Quickly, you will discover if your project is on target or not. 3. Making inaccurate assumptions about the grant maker. Even if you have resources to research potential funders, you can still be off the mark. One way is by making inaccurate assumptions about the grant maker (or the grant making process). From your perspective, you may be filtering the information through your value glasses, a term coined by grant writing expert David Bauer. Successful grant writers understand their own perspectives, their own values, as well as ways to overcome inaccurate assumptions. SOLUTION Below are four steps you can take to avoid being off target:
1. STEP 1 - Find out if there is a match between you, your agency and the funder priorities before you even begin to write a proposal. Find the application forms and guidelines. Look these over thoroughly. If there is no match, stop here. No sense going any further and wasting your time, or the funder's time, either. 2. STEP 2 - Get a list of grants previously funded. Looking at the list, ask yourself, "Are any of the agencies similar to yours?" If not, why not? It may be time to stop. If yes, it is a positive sign to continue the process. 3. STEP 3 - Contact a past grantee. Ask, "Are there any hidden agendas in the funder guidelines?" Ask, "Are there any inaccurate assumptions they had about the grant maker when they started out?" 4. STEP 4 - Make a pre-proposal contact with the funder. Tell the contact person you have studied their program guidelines carefully and you have some questions. Ask the contact person if he or she would prefer to answer questions in now or schedule a 15-minute interview later. Briefly describe your project, making a connection with the funder priorities, whenever possible. Ask, "Does this project fall within your current priorities?" Ask, "Would you be willing to review a 2-3 page pre-proposal?" If they say, "Yes," (and a lot of them do), then you have a chance to better match your proposal to their priorities.
