BTECs are known to increase student engagement, enable students to progress, develop employability skills and add value and variety to your studies.

What is a BTEC? BTECs (Business and Technology Education Council) are vocational and work-related courses, designed to accommodate the needs of employers and allow students to progress to Further and Higher Education. A BTEC takes a practical approach to learning, without overlooking any of the important theory on the subject.

Why study a BTEC? BTECs are recognised by companies across a wide range of industries – as well as being developed in partnership with industry representatives so all employer and student needs are met. BTECs offer an alternative to A Levels. A BTEC will allow you to undertake a number of units for which you will present evidence, based on real-life work and studies. This means you can demonstrate your skills and knowledge within practical situations rather than sweating it out in an exam hall. BTEC students have the experience of real-life practical tasks and work placements. This will make you stand out from students studying A Levels, who don’t usually have this element as part of their course.

How Many UCAS Points Do You Get with a BTEC? If you take a qualification at Level 3, you can earn points on the ‘UCAS Tariff’ for entry into Higher Education. BTECs can earn you equivalent points to AS and A Levels. For example, three Distinction grades of BTEC equate to three A Levels at grade A*. Visit the UCAS website for more information.

On a daily basis we see graphics work everywhere – in newspapers, on packaging, signage and website pages to name but a few. In previous years, our students have gone on to study a wide range of courses at University or straight into the world of work, gaining employment with agencies, sign makers and even starting up their own businesses. All of our Graphic Design students are guided and mentored by lecturers who have worked in the creative industries and have real experience of how Graphic Design can lead to successful employment. Students are constantly engaged in ‘live projects’ within the local community, providing them with a true vocational experience and giving them the confidence to explore and realise their creative potential. In the past, these have included projects Grantham Town Football Club, The Rotatory Club of Grantham, Avalon Cabins and Grantham Museum plus many more.

Callum studied the BTEC Extended Diploma in Digital Design & Graphics. He worked on a couple of live briefs from clients. His final major project was also a live brief for Avalon Cabins where they are now using and sharing his brochure design. Callum received the Graphic Design Award at our Annual Awards Ceremony and also received an award for 100% attendance. Callum has just accepted his place at Lincoln University to study BA (Hons) Graphic Design.

I found this very useful when weighing up future career paths. Chris studied the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science after coming from Sir William Robertson High School, where he thoroughly enjoyed science and has done since a young age.

Chris, Forensic Science

Grantham College was Chris’ local college and he had heard good things about the course. He describes it as interesting and difficult, but fun. He enjoyed the chemistry practical sessions the most. Chris says that he “would encourage students to gain as much work experience throughout the year, so they can see how elements of the course apply in the real world and also help them determine their career path.” Chris is now studying Forensic Science at Nottingham Trent University.

David was a mature student studying the Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching. Being a disabled student with Spina Bifida and having had his right leg amputated coupled with being a mature student, this was a daunting step for him. David says “I soon got into my stride and found the support and guidance offered by the staff and my fellow students nurtured my confidence & self belief which changed my thinking into one of a ‘can do’ attitude. I found myself taking the lead in coaching football sessions which not an easy task when you only have one leg.” David is now a Gym Instructor and is involved with the development of disability tennis. He is also planning disability fitness sessions.

Our Travel & Tourism courses strive to offer a great combination of taught lessons and practical training, either in our full-scale replica aircraft – Grantham Air – including baggage handling, check-in and security area, or through our industry-linked external visits. In 2016, some of our Travel & Tourism students were able to visit Rimini in Italy, where they gained valuable experience working in a range of tour operators and travel agencies. Visits were also made to the Thomson Fly Training Centre and Aerozone at East Midlands Airport, De Vere Belton Woods, Madame Tussauds London and Manchester tourist attractions. At Thomson Fly the students have the exciting opportunity to use the same training facilities that all the Thomson crew use when they join the company and do their annual training. The day is run by a fully qualified trainer who takes everyone through the full interview process and safety training, including the slide descent and the smoke filled cabin among other things. Grantham College also has an excellent network of professional contacts, including travel agents, hotels and airlines. Working closely with these means you can gain an even greater understanding of what it is like to work in this busy and exciting industry.

Work experience is now an essential part of studying at Grantham College. Every student aged 16-19 in a study programme will complete a minimum of 30 hours work experience. Students learn a lot from their time with employers and many wish to return to the workplace after finishing their studies.

This week was very helpful and helped me understand what is required of me in order to continue in my field and hopefully succeed with it. I also feel like the time I spent at work experience helped me with being around people I don’t know and it definitely increased my confidence to talk to people. - Dario Jose Carvalho Grantham MOT Centre

Whilst it gives the students an insight into the working world, many employers also say how much they learn from the students who bring fresh ideas to the table. Students are placed in lots of different environments and all are suited to them so that they are easily accessible and local. A lot of students like to find their own placements which we encourage. This ensures that they are in a work area that they may want to enter as a career and also shows them the process of finding and applying for jobs. Students have had their placements in a variety of places such as Rocket Print & Promotions, Grantham Hospital, Phoenix Social Care plus many more.

I would have Rhys back on another placement if he needed it, It was a pleasure to have him. - Phoenix Social Care

I found that working with children is a lot harder than it looks but I enjoyed it a lot, I had to have a lot of patience as I was in reception class but at the end of the week it felt rewarding seeing even the smallest of improvements and skills within the children. - Amy Bunce Little Gonerby Primary School

I realised how much I really loved the idea of becoming a photographer. They really made me feel part of the team. I took part in a photoshoot for a wedding and I learnt lots. I learned about all the equipment you need to take and all communication skills you need to do the job. - Maddie Lainchbury Harvey & Harvey Photography

It would be hard to find fault with Maddie’s enthusiasm and willingness to be a part of a busy photographic business. She has experienced a broad range of activities that underpin a photography business. We were confident enough in her creative and technical skills to give Maddie an opportunity to photograph peripheral elements of a wedding, and a number of her images will be included in the portfolio presented to that client. Maddie has been a superb team member and a fine ambassador for Grantham College.

Overall, the placement was far better and educational than I had anticipated. I learned a variety of office skills and financial handling, as well as social skills between co-workers and improved my efficiency. I genuinely enjoyed partaking in my work placement and feel that I have learned a lot from it.

Grantham College launched the Table Tennis Academy in September 2002. This initiative, the first in the UK, allows both local and national players to take advantage of a variety of specialist training facilities at the college to improve their national ranking.

The Table Tennis Academy offers the following key benefits: • A wide choice of full-time courses, all leading to nationally recognised qualifications • Access to the outstanding training facilities at the college • Access to top-level table tennis training • International standard coaching and sparring partners • Opportunity to gain a UKCC Coaching qualification • On-site residential accommodation • Travel provided with a coach to a range of domestic competitions • Video analysis & multi-ball training on a oneto-one basis • Sports psychology and individual fitness programmes • Junior British League teams.

We have recently undertaken a new sponsorship deal with Tibhar through Bribar Table Tennis which will allow further opportunities for the Academy players. Grantham College is ideally equipped to provide the very best in table tennis coaching. The college benefits from a large sports hall with specialist flooring, in which the table tennis coaching takes place.

Entry requirements If you apply to the Table Tennis Academy you must be at least 16 years of age at the start of your programme and normally be already playing at junior county standard. Selection will, however, be based on individual assessment and academic ability. You will be asked to attend an assessment at the college which will involve a table tennis session and physical assessment. We will also be asking for a reference from your club or national coach to support your application.

Tom Jarvis was selected to play in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics 2016 whilst training at Grantham College Table Tennis Academy.

Students will have the option to study anywhere from one to three years with the Development Centre, depending on the individual’s ability and career goals. It is hoped that players will also be able to study for their FA Level 1 coaching qualification early on in their course, which will enable them to get involved with local school football teams to gain experience and practice.

The Football Development Centre is for players who have an interest in becoming a footballer at a semi-professional level or are interested in the management and coaching side of the industry. Players will not only be coached for a minimum of six hours a week by Grantham Town FC/UEFA B/ex-professional players but will also get academic qualifications as well as playing in matches in a similar level competitive league.

Entry requirements Players interested in joining the Football Development Centre will undergo an interview regarding technical and academic abilities and a trial before being offered a place.

Head Coach Tom Clayton, a former Sports student at Grantham College, has spent the last six years coaching at Nottingham Forest Youth Development Programme, having been a player with the club. As well as studying for his UEFA B coaching licence, Tom has been a semi-professional player at both Carlton Town FC and Grantham Town FC.

Dyslexia Support Dyslexia is not just about reading and writing. A student with dyslexia may also have difficulties with organisation, retaining information or telling the time. Their strengths may lie in imagination and creativity, problem solving or lateral thinking. We provide support and advice to students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia. We can help you by: • Enabling support in class and/or one-to-one support sessions • Recommending extra time and other arrangements in exams • Assessing for learning needs • Introducing you to IT tools to aid your learning • Providing coloured overlays Dyslexia describes a number of different factors which can affect an individual’s learning. Grantham College is responsive to all the needs of the dyslexic student, who can experience difficulties in a range of areas such as: writing, reading, handwriting, spelling, memory, sequencing and organisation. An assessment will ensure you have the conditions you need in examinations, and identifies support you may require for your course. Any dyslexia support will be delivered through individual or regular study sessions with tutors. To arrange an assessment or if you have any concerns contact either Paul or Ellen.

We encourage students to get involved with our Student Union and Student Voice Forum as we want them to have a big say in college life. The purpose of the SU is to arrange events, social activities, set up societies, organise fundraising activities, offer support to students and represent students. We work closely with the National Union of Students who champion students’ rights. They organise large scale events for all SUs to attend around the UK regarding student life and rights, and as an organisation, enable students to receive student discount when shopping online or in store.

Amy Goswell, Student Engagement Officer agoswell2@grantham.ac.uk

Our Student Voice Forums are a way for students to get their voices heard by College Leadership. Each course rep will notify College Leadership at a Student Voice Forum of anything students feel need to be actioned or looked into. The appropriate staff member will then try to rectify the issue and report back at the next meeting. There’s a lot of fun and opportunities to be had, so ask a tutor how you can get involved or contact Amy Goswell, Student Engagement Officer.
