A ‘two grand’ Christmas present “I can’t believe it,” is what Kevin Hawkins said when he heard the news that he had the winning ticket in our Grand Christmas Draw. The first thing he did was call his Mum after which he celebrated with friends from SCOPE West Sussex at a Christmas Party and then was so excited he didn’t sleep all night! Kevin, who is one of our volunteer gardeners, says the cash prize made Christmas for him although he is not sure what he is going to do with his £2,000 winnings – first thoughts are an electric wheelchair which would make it easier for him to go into Chichester town centre. Congratulations to Kevin and our thanks must go to all our supporters who helped to raise more than £10,000 which will go towards patient care.

“If Barcelona supports UNICEF then why don’t we support St Wilfrid’s Hospice?” that’s what Neil Shaw and Colin Frampton thought when they discussed sponsoring a new strip with Chichester City United under 13s team manager and coach Jim Yeo. The team, which is affiliated to the main club in Chichester, has its home ground at North Mundham and plays in the Arun and Chichester Youth Football League where they

were promoted to top division ‘A’ in 2010. Jim very much wanted to support a local charity and suggested the Hospice as in 1997 St Wilfrid’s cared for his father. Two of the parents, Neil and Colin very kindly agreed to split the cost of the new strip which the team will wear for two years. We think they look as if they are in a league of their own and wish them lots of luck during the rest of the football season.

It’s a knock out!

Former middleweight champion of the world, Alan Minter can still pack a punch or two as he proved when he threw a left jab and knocked over a mountain of coins at the Maypole Inn in Yapton. The mountain, which is mostly made up of coins, although there were some notes stuck in the middle, has steadily grown over the last three years. In fact, during the last seven years, the regulars have built quite a few mountains and raised over £14,500 for St Wilfrid’s! Landlady at the ‘proper’ drinking pub Kelly Townshend says, “St Wilfrid’s Hospice is very dear to the hearts of our regulars who ‘weren’t out for the count’ as they spent three hours on the night totting up the pennies. They have since started building the next mountain!” The Hospice was thrilled to receive a cheque for over £2,300! Congratulations and keep up the good work.

Please donate today for tomorrow’s care

Welcome... to the first newsletter of 2011. As I write we are busy planning for Christmas alongside making plans in case the adverse weather returns! Heavy snow of course puts additional pressure on everyone involved in delivering our services but always brings out the team spirit to great effect. Thank you to everyone who works hard through challenging circumstances to continue our essential services to patients and families. We have had a busy year so far and growth continues in all areas. In the context of financial pressures for many, it is good to know how well St Wilfrid's Hospice continues to be supported. Reading the cards and letters that are sent to the staff in response to the care is very rewarding and the staff often receive extra goodies and cards at Christmas from those who remember the care that their loved ones were given. As you may have read in the press, Anthony Wickins has decided to step down as the Chair of the Trustee Board of St Wilfrid’s. Anthony said “It has been an absolute privilege to serve on the Board of Trustees and as Chair of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Although it has been a difficult decision to stand down, I feel it is now time to pass the baton on to a Chair who can help guide the Hospice to the next level.”

It’s ‘blooming’ good news! Our green fingered volunteers have been recognised for their gardening skills by attaining a top award in the Chichester District’s Residents and Business Garden Competition 2010. Judges were impressed with the high standard of entries and St Wilfrid’s Hospice walked away with first prize in the Best Shop Front/ Business Premises category. Congratulations to our gardeners who do such a fantastic job keeping our garden looking beautiful and in tip-top condition for our patients, visitors and staff to enjoy.

Good choice! We are delighted to hear that the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham has welcomed St Wilfrid’s Hospice as charity partner of the year in Bognor’s biggest annual sporting event – The Bognor Prom 10K Road Race. This event, which takes place on SUNDAY 15TH MAY, has been staged every year since 1995 and attracts serious

club members, individuals and families. The Rotary Club increases all money raised by the runners through its ‘top up’ scheme which means that anyone who enters the race on behalf of St Wilfrid’s could see their sponsorship money topped up by a massive 25%! Click onto www.bognorprom10k.org for more information.

I am pleased to be able to let you all know that Angela Wormald has been selected as the new Chair. Angela joined the Board of St Wilfrid's in April this year and she was HR Director and Vice President of John Wiley & Sons Limited from 1995 until she retired in May 2008. Angela is also a Trustee of the Reed Elsevier Pension Scheme. Angela says: 'I have really enjoyed serving on the Board of Trustees and am honoured to be selected as the next Chairman. I know that with the breadth of skill, expertise, knowledge, and talent that we have within the Hospice staff, volunteers, Management Team and Trustee Board we could not be better positioned for the future.' Anthony plans to step down as Chair and leave the Board in March 2011 and will work closely with Angela until then to ensure a smooth handover. You will be able to read more about Angela in the next edition of the newsletter and she joins me in thanking you for your ongoing support of the work of the Hospice. Alison Moorey, Chief Executive

Hospice ‘Ukes’ first gig Well, what a night that was when our Chef Manager, Dean Bryant and his merry ukulele band provided the entertainment at the Observer’s Community Awards evening held at the Chichester Festival Theatre last December. Having only been asked to perform two weeks prior to the event, Dean, in his words, was both excited and nervous at the same time! But who could pass up the offer of playing on one of the most prestigious stages in England? Together with auxiliary nurses Nick Cook and Jackie Robinson, the trio sang four numbers to a very receptive audience. Dean’s nerves just melted away for, towards the end of the evening, he was really looking forward to getting up on stage to perform the last song. He said, “It was very exciting to be asked to play at the Festival Theatre especially when I have only been playing the ukulele for six months.” They must have been good as over £500 was collected from a very generous audience and the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club donated a further £755.

Hike in Heels “C’mon Tom, put your best foot forward!” Showing a little more ankle than usual, Lewis Branson, Acting Manager of St Wilfrid’s Hospice Furniture Shop and Donations Centre and his colleague Tom Guy have swapped their trainers for high heels to lead a group of men on a walk around Chichester. The sponsored walk will take place during the morning of SUNDAY 22ND MAY and start and finish at Chichester Football and Rugby Club. It follows in the footsteps of the Hospice’s highly successful 10 mile Moonlight Walk which, although predominantly for women, does attract a sprinkling of men. Fundraiser Jill Dennison says, “Last year the Moonlight Walk raised £100,000 and this year we need more help from the boys to help boost funds for the Hospice. This new challenge will give them the chance to ‘dress up’ and teeter their way around a 1.7 km course whilst raising money for a very good cause. A welcoming pie and a pint will be waiting for them back at the club.” Outfits similar to those worn by Lewis and Tom can be purchased from any of the Hospice charity shops. However as we are sure that most of the ladies’ high class clothing and larger size shoes will be snapped up very quickly you are advised to make your purchases as soon as possible! For more information and registration forms please call Jill on 01243 755827.

Marathon Bride Like all brides to be, Julie Longman, aged 26 and a fundraiser at St Wilfrid’s Hospice is busy making plans for her wedding which takes place in November. In fact Julie was first in the queue at our charity shop in South Street, Chichester last October hoping to buy a chic little number from their wonderful array of end of line wedding dresses. Sadly nothing quite suited and although Julie is still on the look out for that ‘perfect’ gown other events have since taken over! For Julie has now signed up to run for the Hospice in this year’s Virgin London Marathon and running, instead of bridal shopping, is taking up most her spare time. Julie, who has always wanted to run in the London Marathon, started training for the feat at the beginning of November. She is now running between four and five times a week and hopes to finish the marathon in four and a half hours – fingers crossed! Julie says, “Although I haven’t worked at St Wilfrid’s for that long, I have decided to support the Hospice because I have seen first hand the wonderful work that goes on here. I am always hearing such lovely comments about the care patients and their families have received. To quote one patient ‘the nurses are like angels without wings’.” Click onto uk.virginmoneygiving.com/JulieLongman if you wish to sponsor Julie. And may we take this opportunity to wish all our runners in the BRIGHTON MARATHON (10TH APRIL) and the VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON (17TH APRIL) the very best of luck.

A legacy for the future St Wilfrid’s Hospice relies on voluntary donations to continue to provide its vital services to the community. Many of us cannot give as much as we would like to during our lifetime, but we do have the potential to offer enormous help in the years to come by leaving St Wilfrid’s a gift in our will. Legacies are one of the most important ways in which you can help secure the future of St Wilfrid’s Hospice, ensuring that patients, their families and friends will continue to receive the high quality specialist care and support for which the Hospice is so well known. Last year a mix of both large and small gifts from supporters’ wills made up one third of our income. A gift left to charity, including St Wilfrid’s Hospice, is exempt from inheritance tax. There are several different types of legacies and it is possible to change your will at any time. If you require more information about leaving a gift to St Wilfrid’s Hospice in your will, please do not hesitate to contact Nicola Gardner on 01243 755827 or email nicola.gardner@stwh.co.uk.

Beat the VAT increase Remember – you can pick up a bargain at any of our Charity shops as there is still NO VAT charge on donated goods

New Year – New Group A new Hospice support group is to be launched in Arundel as a ‘Jack Edmonds Memorial Fund’. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that everyone in Arundel knew Jack. His profile was always high in fundraising for parish events, the surgery, the school, Arundel Hospital, Arundel Museum to name but a few, and he was, using his persuasive charm, always nominated to promote the sale of tickets for such events. Most of the 300 letters and cards of condolence received by his wife Jenny comment on the lovely smile and charm of this true gentleman. Jenny says, “As testimony to his popularity, the parish church of St Nicholas was packed for his funeral, and donations to the Hospice amounted to £3,400. It was the amazing care given to Jack by the Hospice at Home Team that made it possible for him to die with dignity at home amidst the comings and goings of his family and friends, at the centre of which he was always happiest.” On THURSDAY 24TH FEBRUARY BETWEEN 6.30PM – 8PM, the elegant Arundel Town Hall will be the venue for the group’s launch. If you are interested in joining the group or want to find out more about the work of the Hospice please do join us for a glass of wine after which St Wilfrid’s Hospice Chief Executive, Alison Moorey will welcome you to a short presentation and invite you to put questions to representatives from St Wilfrid’s. Jack’s Jazz Night with George’s Regis Band is planned to take place on THURSDAY 10TH MARCH in St Mary’s Hall, London Road. All proceeds to the Hospice. Jack previously organised Jazz Nights for various charities, so this will also be a tribute to him. For tickets and more information please call Jenny on 01903 884992.

Did Father Christmas bring you what you wanted? If the answer is no, not really, why not donate your unwanted presents to St Wilfrid’s. Items such as CDs, DVDs, books and toiletries make brilliant raffle prizes and we’re always happy to accept gift vouchers.

A great big thank you to Dominic and Brendan Gibb-Gray who, along with members of the Emsworth Business Association, organised a Black and White Ball at the Brookfield Hotel in Emsworth raising more than £3,500 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support. The Ball was held in memory of Brendan’s wife, Margaret Gibb-Gray and was such a huge success it is hoped to hold a similar event this year.

News from Westbourne Last September the newly formed Emsworth Community Singers, an amateur choir made up of local people who are interested in singing music from the shows and other popular music, held their first

public concert in St James’ Church, Emsworth. The concert raised just under £1,600 which was shared between St Wilfrid’s and The Rowans Hospice which both serve the Emsworth area.

On a very frosty and icy day we were delighted to welcome 70 of our Friends to the Pallant House Art Gallery to hear a bit more about how their support is helping to provide St Wilfrid’s Hospice services in the community. Guests enjoyed a glass of Bucks Fizz and a mince pie whilst hearing from Laura Hopkins, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Jane Cousins, Hospice at Home Team Leader who explained about their vital work in the community caring for patients in their own homes. After questions, guests had the opportunity to look round the Gallery’s amazing collection of modern art by some of Britain’s best known artists. Thanks to all those who braved the cold to join us, and to Pallant House for allowing us to use the Gallery free of charge. Friends are a lifeline to St Wilfrid’s – by committing to make a regular donation, they help to provide security for our services and the many people that will continue to need them in the future. If you would like to become a Friend of St Wilfrid’s, please contact Nicola Gardner on 01243 755837.

In November we held a Country and Western Hoedown in Southbourne Village Hall. A campfire tableau set the scene and participants enjoyed a supper of sausage and bean casserole and shoofly pie (a kind of treacle tart made with molasses – delicious!) Later they were entertained by Pam Hoare and some of the Coastliners, a group of line-dancers from The Witterings, who kindly gave up their evening to come and show us how to line-dance. A few people were brave enough to join in and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The evening raised nearly £1,200 for the Hospice. Southbourne Group would like to thank all those who supported us in helping to raise this figure. Hilary Gilson

Well done girls! Nickie Worley had always wanted to cycle from her home in Cranleigh, Surrey to her caravan at West Wittering – a distance of about 45 miles. So she asked her friend Rosemary Oppé to join her along with Susan Marks and Carol Smith, all members of West Wittering Sailing Club. They decided that if they were going to cycle all that way they would do it for charity. Fortunately for us, they chose to raise funds for St Wilfrid’s. They left Cranleigh in drizzle at 7.00 am, the heavens opened at Upwaltham but by the time they approached Goodwood they were blown dry by the strong sea breeze. And then came Duncton Hill! Carol, with true grit and great determination cycled the whole way up, whilst Nicki and Susan cycled half way and Rosemary, very sensibly, walked! The journey took just over seven hours to complete and, as they entered West Wittering, the sun shone and friends and family awaited their triumphant arrival. Rosemary exclaimed “We raised £1,040 and are truly proud to have done this for you.” So are we!

BEADYS rounded off 2010 with two very successful fundraising events. Our popular Craft Fair raised a magnificent £700, and our Merry Quizmas netted £1,334. The latter was a riot of fun, with many tables and participants dressed to impress! The table themed as A Clowns' Christmas won the first prize for best dressed table, with A Victorian Christmas and Strictly Come Carolling as runnersup. The Quiz winners were a team from Walberton called "Bewitched". Well done, and thank you to everyone who supports BEADYS events throughout the year. Lets Talk About It You are invited to join us between 2.00 pm and 6.00pm on THURSDAY 19TH MAY at our open afternoon which is planned to take place during Dying Matters awareness week. This is a special week where events will be going on across the country to promote the need to talk about end of

life issues more openly. A recent survey found that whilst 68% of people said they were comfortable talking about death, less than a third (29%) of people have discussed their wishes around dying. Around 70% of people would prefer to die at home, yet of the 500,000 people who die each year in England, around 60% die in hospitals. Dying Matters aims to encourage all of us,

Loads of rubbish means loads of dosh! Since January 2000, St Wilfrid’s has been working in partnership with Palm Recycling Ltd to raise money through recycling paper in paper banks. The first bank was sited at the Bell Inn Public House in Birdham and there are now 40 banks at 24 sites across West Sussex and Hampshire. St Wilfrid’s is able to claim funding from West Sussex and Hampshire County Council for every tonne of paper that is recycled. In the 10 years since the partnership with Palm Recycling began, over 5,000 tonnes of paper have been collected

Scuba in Cuba After booking my diving holiday to Cuba, I realised it provided a perfect opportunity to attempt a sponsored deep dive for the Hospice. Recreational scuba dives using compressed air are usually limited to 100 feet/30m to lessen the likelihood of nitrogen narcosis

or the bends… Beyond this great caution and experience are needed: I set my target at 150 feet (57.72m) which I felt to be realistic. I successfully completed the dive when my depth gauge recorded a maximum depth of 152.89 feet / 46.6m - it was an extremely exhilarating feeling.

whether fit and well or not, to make plans for ill health and care towards the end of life, and discuss these plans with our loved ones. Making these plans can help to ensure that our wishes are known and met where possible. During the afternoon there will be opportunities to hear about the work of St Wilfrid's Hospice and to see how we work closely

with other organisations in the local area. A panel of experts will sit at 4.00 pm and answer questions from attendees. There will be opportunities to have a look around the Hospice and meet members of staff. Please put the date in your diary and contact Pauline Hilton on 01243 755804 if you would like to know more. If you want to find out more about Dying Matters please visit their website www.dyingmatters.org

from St Wilfrid’s supported paper banks raising an incredible total of approximately £500,000 to support the Hospice’s work. From an environmental point of view, recycling these 5,000 tonnes has meant that nearly 90,000 trees have been saved that would otherwise have had to be chopped down to make the same amount of newsprint. If you already use the paper banks, thank you very much for all your help in raising such a tremendous amount for the Hospice and if you don’t recycle your paper in one of the banks, please do start supporting the Hospice in this way. We’d also like to increase the number of paper banks, if you have any ideas for a possible new site or would like to know where your nearest paper bank is please call Julie Longman on 01243 755181.

To date I have raised £890, before gift aid is added, and so I am really pleased with the outcome. I would like to say a huge thank you to Orlando at the dive base in Cuba without whom the dive could

not have taken place, to Yolanda my dive buddy for her support and to the host of sponsors for their generous donations. And no, I didn’t see any sharks - that day! Brigid Meredith, Volunteer

Members of West Sussex County Council Legal Services recently presented a cheque for £1,500 to the Hospice. A great big thank you to everyone who supports us we can’t thank you enough.

‘Quick talking’ Mark gets our bid! What does an old stuffed turtle, a basket of toy soldiers and two Russian military Khaki cloth caps have in common? Answer - they are all once much loved articles which have been donated to the Hospice shops and sold at auction to raise funds for the Hospice. Any donated item which is thought to be of high value is put to one side at our Donation Centre in Summersdale or at any of

our shops to await a visit from Mark Hewitt, Director and Auctioneer at Strides in Chichester and Patron of St Wilfrid’s. For Mark, who has been involved with the Hospice since its inception, knows that some collectors’ items raise far more money sold as lots at auction than they do on the shelves in our charity shops. He says, “I see this initiative as a way of recycling a collector’s item which has potentially a higher value than the average person thinks.” One of the earliest items Mark viewed for the Hospice was a lidless Fry’s chocolate tin in the shape of a lorry. Mark thought it might raise £50 however, surprisingly, it made £1,050! A gilt mesh evening bag which turned out to be gold raised £700 and a window seat priced at £20 in one of our shops sold for £120! Mark is also called in to take items from houses to send to auction. However, if there is anything he can’t take he always tells the owner to

take them to the Hospice shop. If you have anything you don’t want and you think it might be to our advantage please call the Summersdale Donation Centre on 01243 775352. Over the years Mark has helped to raised more the £20,000 for the Hospice, not just wearing his auctioneer’s hat but also by supporting the annual fete at Runcton Mill for many years. We wanted to say a great big thank you to Mark for his never ending support.

*STOP PRESS* As of MONDAY 7TH FEBRUARY, our paper banks will be converted to Cardboard and Paper Banks allowing users to put their cardboard in the banks as well as all the usual items. We will be re-stickering all the banks in the lead up to this date to advise users that they now take cardboard. The new stickers will be placed under the flaps and will say ‘CARDBOARD AND PAPERBANK’. We will be doubling our collection frequency at all sites from this date, as from experience in other areas we expect to see a 50% increase in volume.

Finn’s a firm favourite! “Jenny Thomas our Occupational Therapist has brought her latest addition to her family in to meet us all; a young lurcher dog called Finn. He has brought back some very fond memories for me, because I had a lurcher called Bella for 15 years. The similarity between them both is uncanny. His looks, antics and friendliness are the same as my Bella was, and I look forward to seeing Finn whenever possible,” says Day Hospice patient, Trevor Bowry. Jenny is now beginning the official “Pets as Therapy” (PAT) assessment process for Finn, as he has become such a firm favourite in the Day Hospice. ‘Pets as Therapy’ is a community led national charity founded in 1983, which provides visits from the volunteers and their special dogs to people of all ages in hospice, hospital or care homes. The charity recognizes the value appropriate animals can give patients; through their companionship, contact and simple undemanding affection. Research continues to validate the value of this interaction which can often be one of the most missed aspects of a person‘s home life. There are currently 4,500 active ‘Pets as Therapy’ dogs in the UK, giving enjoyment to over six million people annually.’

First Degree The education department is delighted to announce that we now have a BSc Palliative and End of Life Care award validated with Winchester University. We will also continue to run Dip HE Palliative and End of Life Care alongside the new degree. We think we have a unique arrangement at St Wilfrid’s. Together with West Sussex Health and the local Hospitals Trust, we are a satellite of Winchester University. We have been a university satellite for the past 14 years under this arrangement. Staff from all the organisations can access the university courses free of charge and all teaching is shared reciprocally across the organisations. External candidates pay for each module. In 14 years we have never had to cancel a module... many organisations would envy that position! This practice means that we will have a well above average level of staff in all areas of health care locally that are trained to deliver a first class end of life care service. The low turnover of staff locally further enhances this effect. If you would like any further information about the degree and diploma course please contact education@stwh.co.uk or tel 01243 755812

Graine’s feet are certainly on the ground You’d think with four children and 13 grandchildren Graine Hartley would have enough to keep her busy. However she still finds time to come into the Hospice once a fortnight to transform our patients’ feet into loveable tootsies! Graine, who was a chiropodist for 20 years until she retired four years ago, recently thought it was time she did something. After chatting to Emma Clark, our HR Admin and Volunteer Services Co-ordinator, Graine was excited at the prospect of volunteering at the Hospice and, in agreement with Anne Bennett, our Complementary Services Co-ordinator is now offering ‘foot pamper’ treatments to our patients on the ward and in the Day Hospice. Whilst chatting to our patients, Graine files their toenails, gives them a relaxing massage and generally makes their feet feel more comfortable. She also identifies any foot problems they might have such as bunions or corns that might need further care and passes this information on to Anne. If you would like to become a volunteer at St Wilfrid’s please give Emma a call on 01243 755815 or e-mail emma.clark@stwh.co.uk.
