Level Best After a lot of hard work - both written and practical congratulations are in order for 10 of our auxiliary nurses who have completed the NVQ Level 3 Certificate in Palliative Care. The Certificate is a nationally recognised qualification which seeks to increase students’ knowledge and understanding of palliative care in a vocational setting. Closely mentored by Hospice Night Sister Siew-Ping Crane, who is an NVQ Assessor, the girls had to complete four modules over a period of five months to gain their qualification. Well done!

Pictured Siew-Ping Crane and six of her NVQ students.

A Marathon Effort “Overwhelming, amazing and tough,” – that’s what many of our runners said after taking part in either the Brighton or London Marathon in aid of St Wilfrid’s. And for Ali Archer it was all a bit too much as she sobbed as she crossed the Brighton finishing line and said, “It was a very emotional day, hot and hard. However, you can’t let people down, it’s a real duty to keep on going.” Ali had planned to walk and run the Marathon over its 26 mile course but found she had to run the first four miles before she settled into her pace. “The halfway stage was extremely hard because I had just reached the 13 mile marker as the leaders were heading for the finishing line!” Our heartiest congratulations to all our runners in the Brighton and London Marathons – you did us proud! Sadly some of our runners had to drop out through injury which means that their forfeited places will be added to our allocations for next year. We do hope you will be fighting fit soon. If you would like to run for the Hospice in 2012, either through the ballot or with one of our five golden bond places, please call Jill Dennison on 01243 755827.

Energetic Elves We received a letter from the ‘Energetic Elves’ a group of year 6 children at Aldingbourne Primary School who, as part of their PSHCE lessons, had to decide on a business they would like to run for a day, plan their activities and hopefully finish up with a nice big profit which would be donated to charity.

The team unanimously agreed to hold a mini Christmas fete and were given £25 to get their business up and running. They advertised the event at school and invited teachers and schoolmates to visit Santa’s Grotto, guess the number of Smarties on a cake, buy some yummy home made cakes or purchase a box of crackers. The event was a huge success and raised a total sum of £70.83 which was donated to the Hospice. The team chose to support us as, two years ago, one of the team member’s mothers was under our care. We were very impressed with their efforts and so pleased to meet such an

A great big thank you to the ‘Energetic Elves’ and we do hope to see you all again in the not too distant future. We are always amazed at young people’s generosity

and are happy to come into schools to talk about the Hospice and ideas for fundraising. If you are interested please give Jill Dennison a call on 01243 755827.

Welcome... to the Summer edition of our newsletter. Recent months have seen a few changes at the Hospice with our new Chair of Trustees, Angela Wormald, being appointed in March. Out-going Chair, Anthony Wickins, spoke at his last Board meeting about how much the Hospice had meant to him and my grateful thanks go to him for his hard work and commitment during his time as Chair. We also welcomed Avril Blakely, Head of Fundraising, to the Hospice team. Avril has quickly settled in and become a welcome addition, and it’s an exciting time for her to join us as we start to look forward to our 25th Anniversary in 2012. Another new addition is the Arundel Support Group. Brendan Amesbury, Medical Director, and I spoke at a recent event there and it’s always our pleasure to speak to groups

in the community about our work and show the Hospice DVD. Doing so reminds us that the patients and families we support talk so passionately about what St Wilfrid's Hospice means to them and how the Hospice plays a very important part in the wider community. In this issue you can also find out more about forthcoming events, including the Moonlight Walk. This event has quickly become a really important date in our calendar and the walk is something quite special to be a part of. Please do support us if you can. We receive tremendous support from the community and we recently ended another year in good financial health. On behalf of everyone at St Wilfrid's Hospice I thank all our supporters for their ongoing generosity - it really does make a difference. Alison Moorey, Chief Executive

A Work of Art

Taking the Helm

Last year we commissioned two Fine Art Degree students, who are in their final year at Chichester University, to create a unique piece of work for the Hospice reception area. Charlotte Angliss and Abigail Hook, both talented artists, wanted to create an abstract design from which our patients, visitors and staff would see something different each day. From the initial design the two brightly coloured patchwork panels, which were created using a disperse dye painted onto card and transferred onto material using heat, took nearly a year to complete. We think their work is stunning and it looks as if they have already mapped out a colourful future as Charlotte is looking to gain more exposure in the art world whilst Abigail would like to enrol on an art therapy course. We wish them well.

As promised in the last edition we are pleased to tell you a little more about Angela Wormald, our new Chair of Trustees. Angela has lived in Chichester since 1995 when she moved from Essex to join John Wiley & Sons Limited as Head of Human Resources (HR). Most of her working life has been in HR management although she has spent some time working in retail with Marks & Spencer. Angela is married to John and has two daughters, one grandson and a house in Burgundy, which they visit several times a year. She is also a Trustee of the ReedElsevier Pension Scheme and in her spare time enjoys reading, knitting, silversmithing, enamelling and jewellery-making. During Angela’s time at Wiley she used to raise money for the Hospice from cake sales, books sales and the like - not huge amounts but as we know every little helps. Angela says, “I thought that if I ever became a volunteer it would be for the Hospice. Little did I know.” In January 2010 Angela bought a new sofa and was

L-R Abigail Hook, Charlotte Angliss, tutor Rachel Johnston and student Lee Breeze

hoping to donate the old one to the Hospice. Whilst browsing the Hospice website she spotted that St Wilfrid’s was looking for Trustees so she applied and we were delighted to accept her application! Angela says, “I’ve really enjoyed being a Trustee and consider myself privileged to be Chair at a time when the Hospice has a strong, diverse Trustee Board and an extremely dedicated and professional Management team.” Angela is very much looking forward to meeting many of our supporters and has already attended several fundraising events to thank everyone on behalf of the Trustee Board.

Five Go Off to Quarry Lane! Not wanting to sit around and wait for something to happen, our very own Famous Five - Lewis Branson, Jenny Moyler, Kate Lee, Phil Richards and Tom Guy - are in the midst of their own exciting adventure as they have left the Summersdale depot and ventured into unchartered territory - Quarry Lane, Chichester!

Hospice at Home Appeal Smashes Target A huge thank you to everyone who responded to our appeal earlier in the year. Many of you will remember that St Wilfrid’s needed to raise an additional £15,000 to help plug the gap in providing bank staff cover for our Hospice at Home service, and you certainly rose to the challenge of helping us continue to accept referrals by raising almost £32,000 for the Hospice. Donations are still coming in as we go to press and we have received some very encouraging feedback from

many of our supporters who truly appreciate the range of services that St Wilfrid’s provides to the local community. As Mrs Phillipa Pratt, a St Wilfrid’s supporter, says, “I think that the work of the Hospice is truly marvellous and if I can help in my own way then I know that I am helping others. The staff and volunteers at St Wilfrid’s are doing the most amazing work and I just wanted to acknowledge that with my regular gift.”

Thanks a bunch! Without our wonderful team of over 450 volunteers we simply wouldn’t be able to function or run the Hospice. From working in the garden, helping on the ward, arranging flowers, pampering our patients with relaxing massages or serving in one of our shops our volunteers provide us with an amazing 59,124 hours of support throughout the year. We are always grateful for our volunteers’ contribution and recognise the big difference they make to the Hospice. Volunteers’ Week (1st - 7th June) is an annual national campaign which provides us with the ideal opportunity to say a great big thank you to all our volunteers, past and present, who help us in so many different ways. We are looking forward to meeting you all at our annual meeting so that we can shower you with thanks! One such person is Ingrid Woodburn who joined as a volunteer in 1998 and, in fact, was the first therapist offering hand and foot massage to patients on the ward. About nine years ago Ingrid was introduced to Reiki and now gives treatments to patients, carers, staff and other volunteers. She says, “St Wilfrid’s is a great place to volunteer. I enjoy being able to help people, see them in less pain and giving them a sense of well being.” And so, too, does Steve Hambleton who has been a patient care volunteer for about three years. He feels that

Our brand new furniture shop, which is situated next to Pampered Pets in Quarry Lane is open seven days a week between 9.00 am – 5.00 pm Monday to Saturday and 10.00 am – 4.00 pm on Sunday. And, like our Summersdale shop, it is selling good quality furniture, home furnishings, bric-a-brac and used, new and inexpensive best sellers. Do pop in and have a browse. They can’t promise you ‘a glass of ginger beer or a ham roll’ but they can promise you first class service, value for money and maybe a few hidden gems!

he is giving something back to the Hospice for the fantastic care given to his sister, Laurain, and says, “I like being involved with the patients and do have fun with some of them, making light hearted comments and bringing a smile to their faces. The staff are fantastic and so professional - it is very rewarding being associated with the Hospice.” So a great big thank you to all our volunteers and if you know of anyone who would like to join us please ask them to give Emma Clark, Volunteer Service Leader, a call on 01243 755815. A Great Day’s Racing Chichester-based ATAG Heating UK, a major heating equipment distributor, is the ‘headline’ sponsor for the St Wilfrid’s Hospice ‘Nab’ Challenge for 2011, organised by the Inn-Shore Sailing & Cruising Club (ISCC), East Wittering. The Coastal Challenge, which has raised thousands of pounds for the Hospice over the past decade, takes place over a 12 nautical mile course, starting outside Chichester harbour, around the Nab Tower and back. Money is raised through sponsorship of individual crews and their boats for competing in what has become an established and popular annual event in the sailing calendar. Last year’s event raised £9,541 for the charity and took the total raised by the ISCC for the Hospice to £110,000. “It’s about the local community stepping up to the mark and supporting St Wilfrid’s Hospice,” says Phil Bell, ATAG Managing Director. “We are aiming to make this year’s event the biggest yet.” Interested sailing clubs that would like to participate in this year’s event on Saturday 24th September should contact Patrick Doyle on 07801 819884 or email coastal@innshorecruisingclub.co.uk

Having a Fling What better way to brighten up a cold and dark January evening than to meet up with friends, dance, sup, make merry and also raise money for an extremely worthwhile cause! This is exactly what nearly 100 people did at the new Scott Building at Lavant House School. Guests arrived to the strains of the ‘Highland Welcome’ and mingled with friends old and new. David Sparrow expertly guided the Scottish dancers through wonderfully named dances such as ‘Riverside’, ‘Circassian Circle’ and ‘Strip the Willow’. Some dances were straightforward

and others required more concentration, but all were greatly enjoyed with much laughter. There was a colourful array of tartan – kilts, trousers, sashes and bow ties! A marvellous £950 was raised, which will go to the Hospice. It was a truly enjoyable evening and very grateful thanks go particularly to Margot Lowe, the Bursar at Lavant House, who was extremely supportive and helpful. Also to David Sparrow for his excellent calling and to all those who helped behind the scenes. Here’s to next year!

Night Owls It will soon be that time of the year again when our night owls will be taking to the streets of Chichester at midnight to take part in our third MOONLIGHT WALK on FRIDAY 17TH JUNE. Registration is open until WEDNESDAY 1ST JUNE so please sign-up today at www.moonlightwalk.stwh.co.uk and help us beat our target of walkers and funds raised from last year – an amazing £88,500 was raised by 786 walkers. Let’s make it a night to remember!

It’s Quackers! “Luv-a-duck,” that’s what Lavant Support Group said as they released lots of plastic ducks at the start of the Lavant Duck Race helping to raise £130 for the Hospice.

Marion Juggins, Chairman of Witterings and District Support Group, has helped with fundraising for St Wilfrid's since the mid-eighties. Her husband, Brian, died of cancer in 1990 after which she became a regular volunteer in the office and on reception. In December 2009 she sent the usual Christmas card to a very old friend, Tony Kerly, who had lost his wife, Doreen, to cancer a year or two previously. Doreen had been under our care and Marion felt guilty that she had not been in touch with Tony and suggested they meet for lunch in the New Year. Tony replied saying he would give her a call - he did and, as the saying goes, the rest is history. Tony and Marion were married at the end of January at a lovely hotel in the New Forest joined by close members of the family.

BEADYS Thanks to everyone who has supported our fundraising activities, BEADYS have raised in excess of £10,000 since April 2010. Events coming up include sponsored bike rides, quizzes and an Antiques Roadshow! Please phone Gill Kelly 01243 552230 for further details. In the meantime, don't forget to visit BEADYS BOOK SHED, situated at Parsonage Farm, (next to the Windmill) in Barnham where you will find all kinds of book bargains. This venture has raised almost £12,000 in three years, and we are always grateful for donations of books, magazines, jigsaws, CDs, and DVDs.

A great big ‘round’ of applause to you Pictured:- Vice President of the Hospice, Joan Foster receives a cheque for £1,608 from Ian Blackman (Handicap Secretary, Chichester Golf Club) on behalf of the mid-week roll-up group. The group collects money from members taking part in the Stevie-B monthly medal competition and, since 2005,

has donated the fees raised each year to St Wilfrid’s.

A Rise to the Challenge “It’s a challenge and something we can both do together,” that’s what Day Hospice Nurse Anne-Marie Hopkins suggested to her husband Dave when she told him of her plans for them both to take part in a sponsored sky-dive! This is just one of the many challenges Anne-Marie wants to achieve before she reaches the age of 60 and one that she can now tick off her ‘to-do’ list. Although both were very apprehensive, the weather was beautiful and their family was with them to offer support. Anne-Marie says, “I have never been so scared in my life! Our thanks must go to patients, staff, family and friends for helping us to raise £1,183 for St Wilfrid’s.” If you would like to experience the unforgettable thrill of jumping out of a plane and raising money for St Wilfrid’s do give Julie Longman a call on 01243 755181.

A Harmonious Success Boxgrove Support Group hosted a glowing candlelit concert featuring the Luard Trio. The beautifully restored twelfth century church provided a unique setting for the evening. Guests were welcomed with sparkling wine and canapés prepared by the group members. The Luard Trio (Caroline Luard, Valerie Wright and Julie Dance) enjoyed performing as much as the audience did listening to their diverse programme, which included Purcell, Bach, Mozart, Strauss and Lloyd Webber. The concert - made possible due to the generous sponsorship of a number of local firms and private donors - raised the impressive sum of £3,180.50 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Our heartfelt thanks go to all those involved!

Our 25th Anniversary Year On January 5th 1987 our first patient was admitted to St Wilfrid's Hospice and we are starting to plan our 25th Anniversary year which is an important landmark for everyone associated with St Wilfrid's. During the year we plan to hold various events and activities which will give us the opportunity to celebrate all that has been achieved, remember

everyone who has played a part in the development of St Wilfrid's and, of course, think of all those who have been cared for by the Hospice. Through these activities we hope to mark the year in style and continue to raise the funds required to develop our much needed services even further. We’d love to hear from you if you have been involved

with St Wilfrid's in some way and would like to help us make 2012 a year to remember. Perhaps you were a volunteer yourself, took part in some early fundraising activities or a member of your family used to work here and talked with you about their experiences. You may have known someone who was cared for by the Hospice and want to share your memories with us.

Please do get in touch if you would like to be involved; we will try and contact as many people as we can to plan our year but need the help of our supporters to make our 25th Anniversary a really special year for us all. Contact Pauline Hilton on 01243 755804 or by email to pauline.hilton@stwh.co.uk if you’d like to be involved.

Getting a head… Beyond the Already a month into her new role as Head of Fundraising, we decided to put Avril Blakely under the spotlight and find out more… So how long have you been a fundraiser? “I’ve been a fundraiser for almost 12 years so I’ve been asking people for money for a long time! My first fundraising job was for an Overseas Development Agency based in Brixton and I loved writing about the people who were benefitting from our

supporters’ generosity and also helping our donors understand how their support was transforming lives.” What do you enjoy about your work? “You get the opportunity to meet and work with some very inspirational people. I enjoy the diversity of the role and the privilege it offers in being able to build relationships over time.” What are you looking forward to most now that you are part of the St Wilfrid’s team? “I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone at the Hospice a lot better and I have already found both staff and volunteers to be incredibly welcoming and friendly. It is obvious, too, that the local community has been extremely generous in its support of St Wilfrid’s. I am looking forward to helping to ensure the continuing success of the Hospice so that high quality care and support is provided to anyone whose life is touched by St Wilfrid’s.”

call of duty Dressing like a lady and slipping into a pair of heels isn’t in their contract but for Hospice Chef Manager, Dean Bryant, and Auxiliary Nurse, Nick Cook, it appears it’s all in a day’s work! Shedding their everyday uniforms, the pair were photographed prior to taking part in the first ever Hike-in-Heels. The Hospice invited men, including Dean and Nick, to swap their trainers for high heels and

L-R Nick and Dean take part in a one mile sponsored ‘teeter’ around Chichester to raise funds for St Wilfrid’s. Whatever will they get up to next?!

Dig deep It’s not just the flower beds that get dug in our garden. Fundraiser Jill Dennison was told to ‘dig deep’ as she drew the winning ticket for a champagne dinner for four at Fat Olives in Emsworth. Organised by Restaurateurs Julia and Lawrence Murphy, the raffle raised £574 which was split between The Rowans and St Wilfrid’s Hospice. If you’re a local business and would like to support St Wilfrid’s Hospice please do give Jill Dennison a call on 01243 755827.

The Orchard Centre Eggs-cited Bunnies Opening Soon A new drop-in centre at St Wilfrid’s will give our patients in the community the opportunity to join in one of our group sessions, enjoy a complementary therapy treatment and see one of our doctors or other healthcare professionals all on the same day. As from 1st June the new Orchard Centre, which will offer all these services, will be open in the Day Hospice every Wednesday between the hours of 10.00 am – 4.00 pm. At the moment our Day Hospice is open three days a week with patients booking in for a specific day on a regular basis. However, this doesn’t always suit everyone as some patients find it difficult to make this commitment whilst others think attending the Day Hospice is the last thing that they would want to do. It is hoped that the newly refurbished Orchard Centre, which will only be open one day a week, (the Day Hospice will still be open for business as usual on a Tuesday and Friday) will attract more patients, especially our younger ones, to drop in and come and go

as they please. There will be lots of interesting group activities including creative art sessions, exercise classes and relaxation techniques as well as the opportunity to share problems and concerns in a safe environment with others who have similar experiences. Appointments can be made to see a doctor, clinical nurse specialist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist or counsellor as well as with a complementary therapist for Reiki, Indian head massage or a relaxing hand and foot massage. In fact patients who book in for a clinical appointment could soon find their whole day taken up with a variety of new activities. Day Hospice Manager, Glenys Le Poidevin says, “We hope that the Orchard Centre will offer a valuable but flexible service for our patients and our carers.” Freshly made food and refreshments will be available throughout the day. For more information call Katharine Campbell on 01243 755829.

Captains Club Together Last year’s captains at Bognor Regis Golf Club, Nicola Holton and Mark Watson presented a cheque for £8,000 to the Hospice. This impressive sum was raised by members through a variety of events held throughout the year which included golf days and a charity party. A great big thank you to you and all our wonderful supporters – you never cease to amaze us.

Pictured - Our Easter bunnies and their families warming up for the second Hospice Easter Bunny Hop around Hotham Park, Bognor Regis which took place in April. Around 50 ‘egg-cited’ Easter bunnies came along in their beautifully decorated bunny masks for the ‘hop’ around the park and helped to raise over £300 for the Hospice.

Hitting the right note The Sussex Festival Choir was formed in 2003 by Stephen Hope following the death of his mother after a 14 month stay in Hospital. Stephen wanted to ‘give something back’ to a care establishment and chose to support the Hospice movement. At first Stephen launched a series of orchestral concerts along the south coast but found it very difficult to attract local audiences. So he decided to provide a large scale platform for choristers to perform a large work during the summer term when their own choirs had finished for the season. The choir, which now meets with the Sinfonia da Chiesa in Arundel Cathedral every July, has proved to be amazingly successful and, to date, has raised more than £36,000 for St Wilfrid’s and St Catherine’s Hospices. The concerts attract artists such as Dame Felicity Lott, Dame Anne Murray, Sir Willard White and many other singers and players all of whom offer their services free of charge. This year’s concert, which sees Dame Emma Kirkby performing Bach’s Mass in B minor, takes place at 7.15 pm on Sunday 31st July. Please call Stephen on 01372 741100 for more information. Our grateful thanks must go to Stephen and all the choristers for their never ending kindness and support.

A ‘High Five’ for Hospice Kitchen Top marks were awarded to our Hospice kitchen for its excellent food hygiene standards after a recent visit by the District Council’s Food Safety Officer. The Council has

joined the National Food Rating Scheme which encourages and promotes good hygiene standards in food businesses throughout England. Safe food preparation, properly trained staff and a spotless kitchen scored a 5-star rating for Chef Manager, Dean Bryant, and his team which shows just how closely the Hospice is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.

Last chance! If you are going overseas for your holiday please do remember St Wilfrid’s Hospice when you come back with a purse full of foreign change. Believe it or not, many of the donations we receive are in the form of foreign coins, banknotes and obsolete British currency which up until now we have been able to exchange at a very good rate. However during 2012 many of the major countries have a cut-off date for redemption after which foreign currency won’t be of much use to us. So we hope you have a lovely holiday and please do pop your foreign coins into one of our collection boxes upon your return.

Caroline’s experience St Wilfrid’s Hospice is committed to training and education offering regular placements to students of care professions. One example is Caroline Stack who is in her third year of the Occupational Therapy BSc course at Brighton University and has just completed an eight week placement at the Hospice. Caroline says, ”Occupational Therapy (OT) within the Hospice is holistic and tailored to each individual’s needs. My role involved carrying out OT assessments and treatment and included supporting families’ and friends’ psychological needs.

”I also worked closely with the Community Palliative Care Occupational Therapist, Emma Underhill, who liaises with St Richard’s Hospital. This allowed me to follow some patients’ journeys from acute into palliative service. ”I enjoyed my time at the Hospice very much, and I am very grateful to Occupational Therapist, Jenny Thomas, for all her support and excellent teaching. It was lovely to work somewhere that not only provides wonderful care, but also maintains a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for both patients and staff.“
