DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE KEVIN MITCHELL
Director, Grapevine Parks and Recreation kmitchell@grapevinetexas.gov Welcome to the newest issue of our Go Grapevine Magazine! This summer season was filled with more programs and camps offered than ever before, so we hope your family found a way to get involved in the community through Grapevine Parks & Recreation. The new 2018 Master Plan for Parks & Recreation was approved by City Council in early June. The Master Plan provides a comprehensive explanation of the community’s vision, desires and needs for their parks and recreation system. We sincerely thank you for your input and participation with the surveys and focus groups that were conducted. Our main goal is to ensure the Department provides easy access to many different opportunities, and in turn, our community continues to take advantage and utilize all that Grapevine Parks & Recreation has to offer. You can find a copy of the Master Plan at the Grapevine Public Library, The REC of Grapevine, Grapevine City Hall and online at www.GoGrapevine.com. Speaking of improving parks, after a lengthy timeline of park recovery, a brand new Meadowmere Park re-opened this summer! We hope you are excited and pleased with new amenities that are now available. If you haven’t had a chance to go explore Meadowmere Park, we have a new floating Aquapark called Altitude H20, an in-house Dove Creek Day Camp, a soft sand beach, renovated restrooms, ropes course inspired playground, upgraded primitive camping sites and a year-round paddling rental center. Taking the time to get outdoors and staying active is so important to our health and well-being. When it comes to children, we like the approach of “less screen, more green.” Whether it’s playing ball at Oak Grove Park, volunteering at Katie’s Woods Park, walking the Horseshoe Trails, or playing in your neighborhood park, getting outside is vital. On Saturday, August 25 & September 22, our volunteer services will conduct a “Happy to Help Saturdays” event. This City-wide volunteer effort is a great way to give back to your community, while benefitting the environment and getting your hands dirty. Our Parks Maintenance staff is doing their own heavy lifting as they prepare the soon-to-be upgrades within your Parks system, including Yorkshire Meadows Park. The park is currently under construction and will receive a new playground structure once complete. A new workout station for Active Adults is being added to The REC’s outdoor courtyard to improve on exercise programs for Active Adults. The Bessie Mitchell House at the Botanical Gardens is being remodeled to boost Heritage Park’s overall experience with energy efficient features, a bigger kitchen, outdoor patio, and updated restrooms to name a few. To stay updated on projects and capital improvements, such as the Bessie Mitchell House, Bear Creek Dog Park, and Oak Grove Softball, please visit GoGrapevine.com/ParkDev As we approach the fall, it becomes a busy and entertaining time for events in Parks & Recreation. The dinosaurs will return for Jurassic Gardens and Fossil Fest on September 22 at the Botanical Gardens. If you’d like to enjoy a FREE concert, our Sunset Concert Series will take place in October at The REC courtyard this year. The creepy carnival is back for this year’s GrapeYard on October 26 & 27 at Oak Grove Park, so join us if you dare, for a Halloween scare! The annual Carol of Lights show will ignite the Christmas spirit in you like never before this year on November 19. We are excited to expand on family-friendly activities to enjoy and a show to remember, all in the Christmas Capitol of Texas. We appreciate your patronage and look forward to seeing you this fall! Warm Regards, Kevin Mitchell

TINY TRASH IS A
BIG
PROBLEM
Tiny trash, or micro trash, is a persistent problem all over the globe. Small items of litter such as bottle caps, beverage tabs, cigarette butts, straws, plastic straw wrappers and glass shards are hazardous to wildlife and damaging to the environment. Unfortunately, this tiny trash is also prevalent throughout Grapevine, especially in our parks. We need your help to eliminate it!
HERE’S HOW • Use reusable straws or better yet, just say no to straws.
• Place the cap back on the container after every sip or pour.
• Celebrate with ribbon wands, dried leaves or bubbles instead of confetti.
• Carry a portable cigarette butt container if smoking outdoors or in the car.
CHAMPION ONE OF THESE TINY ACTIONS AND YOU’LL MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE!

TESTIMONIAL Two years ago, it was quite apparent to me that I needed to strengthen my core after having had two back operations. A new class was starting at The REC called “Power Time” and I knew I wanted to join. James Oliver, the trainer, encourages us to reach our goals and I have not only strengthened my core, but I’ve noticed improvement in my balance and that stretching is so much easier now. James makes the class fun and plays music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I love this class and the friendly people in it. After two years, I am thankful to be able to participate not only in Power Time, but to be able to take advantage of the many other classes offered at The REC. 56
