FEATURE:

Parr Park Rock Art Trail Did you know along the trail outside of Parr Park, there are thousands of rocks delicately painted with inspirational quotes, cartoon characters, nature & wildlife, Texas landmarks and so much more?

The Parr Park Rock Art Trail is sure to inspire all who meander through the trails to explore. The Rock Art Trail lies between the trailhead of Wall-Farrar Nature Trail and the trail connection from Parr Park along Big Bear Creek. Once the Parks and Recreation Department discovered the Rock Art Trail, we felt compelled to learn who the artists were behind this beautiful work. Some research led us to Grapevine resident, Ron Olsen, who we soon learned started the initiative with only ten rocks to spread joy throughout the community. In early March, Ron took a work trip to Iceland, right before the Coronavirus (COVID-19) began spreading around the nation. The

12

GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

outbreak worsened, and his friends and family in Texas told him about how Texan businesses were shutting down, schools were closed, and many people were isolated to their homes. As the number of COVID-19 cases increased rapidly, traveling in and out of countries came to a halt. Ron learned that he was going to be stuck in Iceland until it was safe to leave. “Being stuck in Iceland was a combination of a lot of chaos, including quarantine for a few days as I thought I had contracted the virus,” Ron said. “My test came back negative, but it mangled my travel schedule. Then the utter confusion and canceled flights and border and airport closures, I was starting to think I would not be coming home anytime soon.”

After weeks passed in isolation, Ron was finally able to return to Grapevine, where the shutdown of his beloved state and city was now a reality. “Travel from Iceland to the United States was permanently halted the day after I left,” says Ron. As many Texans did, Ron turned to the outdoors for physical activity as an escape from feeling stuck at home. Before COVID-19, as an avid trail explorer, Ron visited Parr Park Trail often to enjoy the nicely shaded areas and the connection to nature the trail provides. And while like him, many were outdoors enjoying nature, the uncertainty of the future left people stressed and worried. Ron explains, “After I came back home and saw a lot more people outdoors, I wondered, what could I do to uplift and encourage my community?” So, he and his family gathered ten smooth-surfaced rocks, painted them, and scattered them alongside Parr Park Trail. The artwork on the original rocks consisted of a simple happy face, an Oklahoma University logo, blue-bonnets, a mountain and stream scene, a galloping horse (Grapevine Mustang!), and rockzero was the Iceland national flag. To Ron’s surprise, rocks began multiplying. Other trail attendees would add day by day, more and more rocks. It was precisely the chain reaction that he was hoping for.

“Encouraging each other is essential to sticking together as a community and using what we have to brighten the days,” he says. “The artwork is beautiful, and there is so much talent displayed. I hope one day, this can become a bit of an outdoor attraction in Grapevine that people will be excited to see. My three-year-old granddaughter had more fun seeing all the Rock Art on the trail than when I bought her a $50 ticket for Ice at the Gaylord.” Research has proven that creating art helps you to relax due to its ability to reduce anxiety and stress in your body. Using art to express how you feel is a form of journaling that experts say helps those who are stressed. “The fact that so many others are using the Parr Park Rock Art Trail to stay encouraged during these times is uplifting in itself,” Director of Parks and Recreation, Kevin Mitchell says. “My family and I spent hours on the trail, exploring all of the rocks.” If you haven’t already, visit the Parr Park Rock Art Trail. The talent is truly amazing, and we’re thankful that our citizens aim to inspire each other through the enjoyment of the outdoors.

FEATURE:

The Beauty & the Bees Did you know Grapevine Parks and Recreation houses three honey bee hives at the Grapevine Botanical Gardens? We house bees because they’re known as nature’s best pollinators. As a newly-recognized Bee City USA® Affiliate, the City of Grapevine wants to ensure we promote bees as pollinators and benefactors of their environment. Bee City USA’s mission is to galvanize communities to sustain pollinators by providing them with a healthy habitat, rich in a variety of native plants and free of insecticides.

Nutrition & Honey Bees depend on flowers and plants for nutrition and anyone who has visited the botanical gardens knows that the area is abundant in its diversity of plant species. Without bees, we wouldn’t have nearly as much beauty to admire. Honey bees collect pollen and nectar as food for the entire colony, and as they do, they pollinate plants. Nectar is collected for a few reasons. Since nectar is full of sugar, it is used as a bee’s main energy source and is also used to make honey in their hive. When the nectar becomes honey, it is stored in the cells of the honeycomb. The honey bees at the Botanical Gardens produced about three gallons of honey last year and is predicted to produce five gallons this year. Pollen is full of fat and protein, which helps feed the hive. When bees collect pollen, they carry it from one flower to another. This cross-pollination is essential for flowers in order to produce more seeds. As bees crosspollinate, more flowers and plants will grow. A bee gets the nutrients they need and the garden ends up with more flowers and plants. 22

GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

“It’s important to provide the honey bees a wholesome habitat like the botanical gardens to reverse pollinator declines,” said Kevin Mitchell, Grapevine Parks and Recreation Director. The Department works with Jeremy Campbell, Lead Beekeeper and owner of WeBeeKeepin.com, who has been helping with the garden’s bees since early this year. Jeremy explains the relaxed nature of the honey bees, “I’ve placed queens in the colonies which were bred for calmness and productivity. This makes the bees less of a potential hazard and ensures we don’t have Africanized bees present in the apiary.”

What’s happening “In the Hive” Ever wonder what the bees are doing in there? Jeremy explains what will happen in the hives for the remainder of the year.

August

Bees continue to produce brood (eggs, larvae and pupae of honey bees) but typically show signs of fatigue from disease and lack of pollen and nectar available. Most beehives are grumpy and defensive during this month. Beekeepers continue to take honey out of the hives if there isn’t any in July.

Pollinators, such as honey bees, bumble bees, sweat bees, mason bees, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, hummingbirds, and many others, are responsible for the reproduction of almost ninety percent of the world’s flowering plant species and one in every three bites of food we consume. The City of Grapevine has designated the Keep Grapevine Beautiful Board as the facilitating committee for Grapevine’s efforts to engage the community in promoting conservation. The Board meets the second Monday of each month at 6:30 pm at The REC of Grapevine (1175 Municipal Way), as COVID-19 restrictions allow. All residents of Grapevine are invited to offer their ideas for pollinatorfriendly initiatives. Find more information on board meetings at GoGrapevine.com/Events. The more people and organizations involved, the sooner pollinator declines will be reversed.

September

With the first rains, bees begin to find more pollen and nectar. Sometimes a small bumper crop of honey can be made in North Texas during this month.

October

Bees begin to close up their honeycombs and backfill the brood with honey for the winter while brood production decreases. Beekeepers often treat for disease or start preparing for winter during this time by feeding sugar syrup to colonies with inadequate honey stores.

November

Bees continue to reduce brood production and overall the population can rapidly decrease this month as summer bees begin to die off. Beekeepers continue to feed as necessary.

December

Bees drastically reduce or halt brood production entirely. Honey is consumed as energy in order for the colony to produce heat using muscle vibrations. Beekeepers often do not disturb hives during this month, but it is a good time of year for pest control since pests often hide in the brood during summer.

AYURVEDA 7 DAY FALL CLEANSE & COOKING CLASS VIRTUAL

HEALTH TIP

TRAIN FOR YOUR FIRST 5K So you finally signed up for your first 5K race! Whether it’s just for fun or it’s a symbol of your commitment to becoming a serious runner, you’ve got quite the experience ahead of you. If you’re not quite sure how to start training for your first 5K, we’ve detailed some helpful tips to help you get to that finish line.

KNOW THE FOUR PILLARS

There are four key pillars that support a healthy running lifestyle: cross training, strength training, dietary, and sleep changes. In order to start as a serious runner, you’ll need to address all four! Make sure you talk to your doctor before adjusting your diet or sleep schedule too drastically.

CROSS-TRAIN

DON’T BELIEVE CARB MYTHS

START SMALL

DON’T SKIP STRETCHING

As much as running is about cardiovascular endurance, it’s also about muscle strength. Cross training with fitness equipment like ellipticals, weight machines, and even free weights can help you increase both muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance.

If you can’t run a full 5K at the time you sign up for your race, there’s no need to worry. In fact, roughly 30% of adults report walking is their primary form of exercise. So start with one mile. As you adjust your lifestyle and gain endurance, you’ll be able to go farther, faster. The key is consistency!

There’s a lot of content out there about loading up on carbs before a big race, but the truth is that 5K races aren’t that long! In fact, five kilometers converts to just over three miles. Come back when you sign up for your first half-marathon and we can talk about carbs!

Though your training might seem like enough by itself, it’s important to remember to stretch! This is especially important after you run, as your muscles will be tight. Of course, these are only a few tips to help you get started with your training. Your training will be a process, and you may find that you need to do more to excel in your first big race. Good luck!

TESTIMONIAL The REC has been such a wonderful part of my life since its origination. So when it closed due to the virus, it would have been such a loss if not for the way it continued to communicate with its members. I exercised online with Patrece, read the emails sent regularly, participated in Zoom meetings to keep in touch, received meals from The REC (which I was able to order online) and was encouraged to call the staff who remained near the phone if needed. Overall, I was able to stay in touch with them and other friends because of the way The REC sought out opportunities to keep us together and ultimately succeeded. –Marilyn Wogstad
