DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE KEVIN MITCHELL

Director, Grapevine Parks and Recreation

Welcome to the Spring 2019 issue of Go Grapevine Magazine! A lot of planning has gone into new programs that will kick off in 2019. Before the clock strikes midnight, I invite you to enjoy all that the Christmas Capital of Texas® has to offer. Enjoy our nightly synchronized Christmas Light Show Spectacular and Christmas tree, through January 6, at the Town Square Gazebo on Main Street. To start the new year off on a healthier note, we encourage members to take advantage of our NEW Flex Pass at The REC of Grapevine, starting in 2019. This flexible class pass includes access to most fitness classes for more cost-effective and convenient options to stay happy and healthy. Our Therapeutic Recreation programs are really beginning to take off with the addition of a variety of offerings and a wider age range for participants. Those with special needs can participate in all the fun including cooking, fitness, weekend social events, and community outings. Grapevine Parks & Recreation has started our very own e-newsletter, “Go Grapevine Snapshot” that is sent out to subscribers on a bi-weekly basis. It includes the latest and greatest of all things Parks & Recreation. To subscribe and stay in-the-know, visit our website at GoGrapevine.com. These initiatives resulted from the citizens’ surveys and focus groups that helped guide the 2018 Master Plan and we are excited to get them off the ground and running. Ongoing projects that we hope you’ll be excited about include Oak Grove Softball Complex and an entirely new registration software is in the pipeline. Keep an eye out for ticket sales of the Daddy Daughter Dance and our Mother Son Event in the spring. Don’t miss signing your children up for our summer camps and swim lessons; registration opens on February 1. Our outdoor lake-based summer camp, Dove Creek Day Camp, will be opening registration in early December in case you’re looking for a nice Christmas gift to give. As always, follow us on social media @GoGrapevine to stay connected to your local Parks and Recreation department. Here’s to a happier and healthier new year! Warm Regards, Kevin Mitchell

KEEP GRAPEVINE BEAUTIFUL Keep Grapevine Beautiful (KGVB) is a non-profit organization that exists to preserve and enhance the local natural environment by strengthening citizen’s levels of commitment through educational programs and engaging volunteer-based projects. Let’s work together to Keep Grapevine Beautiful! Visit KGVB.org for more information.

ACTIVITIES & PROGRAMS HAPPY TO HELP SATURDAYS

Each month, volunteers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in various projects that benefit the environment and improve the appearance of our community. Projects may include painting, park support, planting, removal of invasive plants, and litter pickup. Just a few hours work can make a big difference. Specific location and instructions will be sent out the Monday before each event. April’s event will support the City Nature Challenge. To sign up to volunteer, visit GoGrapevine.com/Volunteer Dates: January 26, February 23, March 23 & April 27 Location: Grapevine Parks Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE The City of Grapevine, in association with KGVB and America Recycles Day, will host this event for residents of Grapevine. Volunteers are needed to help receive and sort donations. Contact Dewey Stoffels, 817.410.3389 to volunteer. Date: Saturday, March 30 Location: 501 Shady Brook Drive Time: 8:00 – 11:30 am

DON’T MESS WITH TEXASTM TRASH-OFF The Don’t mess with Texas Trash-Off serves as Texas’ signature event, in partnership with the Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program. Volunteers work together in community parks, along roadways and shoreline to collect trash and recycling. Sign up to volunteer at KGVB.org Date: Saturday, April 6 Location: Area Parks Time: 9:00 – 11:00 am

EARTH DAY CELEBRATION KGVB, in partnership with the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Farmer’s Market of Grapevine, hosts this year’s Earth Day Celebration. This fun-filled family event will feature educational presentations and vendors that will help us learn to live more environmentally friendly. Date: Saturday, April 20 Location: Town Square Gazebo, Downtown Grapevine Time: 9:00 – 12:00 pm

EARTH DAY ACTION WEEK Is your business or organization looking for a way to give back to the community? April 22 - 26 is set aside for large groups to take action by locally restoring, beautifying and cleaning up our environment. Space is limited. Email Cindy Harris at charris@grapevinetexas.gov to sign up.

ADOPT-AN-AREA PROGRAM This impactful program allows individuals, families, community groups and businesses to take an active role in keeping our community litter-free and beautiful. Adopters agree to conduct at least six cleanups in their area in the calendar year. Contact Cindy Harris at charris@ grapevinetexas.gov to participate.

ENVIRONMENTAL LECTURE SERIES GOING SOLAR!

Did you know that solar is a clean, affordable and reliable energy? KGVB’s first environmental lecture of 2019 features Larry Howe, an expert in the area of renewable energy, particularly rooftop solar energy in Texas, and co-founder of Plano Solar Advocates. Larry will explain how rooftop solar energy is our untapped local natural energy resource in Texas. It can generate pollution-free and emissions-free electricity and the fuels comes to you. Lecture is FREE. Visit KGVB.org and RSVP to let us know you’re attending! Date: Wednesday, January 30 Location: The REC Stage Classroom Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm

ORGANIC GARDENING AND WEED CONTROL Come learn how to garden without synthetic fertilizers and harmful pesticides. Organic gardening is fundamentally different from traditional methods. Organics nurture the soil and help it absorb and retain moisture longer. Over time this will reduce the need for water and fertilization, which will save you money. Joyce Connelley, of Marshall Grain, leads the class and will cover how to prevent weeds and rid existing ones without using toxic chemicals. Date: Wednesday, February 27 Location: The REC Classroom Time: 7:00 - 8:00 pm

Please email Cindy Harris, Volunteer Services Liaison, at charris@grapevinetexas.gov for volunteer opportunities. Upcoming events and general information about KGVB can be found at KGVB.org. Follow Keep Grapevine Beautiful for updates and ways to volunteer! GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

In the 1950s, Hollywood Feed opened our first pet supply store on the corner of Hollywood Street and Chelsea Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. We started as a local feed store for the surrounding Delta farmland, and ultimately became a trusted neighborhood purveyor of pet supplies as the city of Memphis grew up around us. Hollywood Feed was known for friendly and knowledgeable service then; service that continues to this day. We now serve customers all across the United States with new locations opening all the time. Our philosophy never changes as we continue to provide unmatched service and honest value to our loyal customers. We offer American-made goods that we ourselves test and believe in, and our commitment to creating local jobs is strong. In the end, we make more than pet supplies. We make a difference.

TESTIMONIAL About three years ago I moved to Grapevine to be closer to my family. I did not know anybody, I was recently retired, and I wanted to find something to occupy my time. Because of some physical problems, I was limited in a lot of my activities. I began by looking at The REC’s Active Adult classes. They were so varied and I found activities that I could physically do with my impaired physical abilities. As I gained more strength, I was able to join more challenging activities. One of my favorite activities is the Happy Trails Excursions with Patrece. It gave me the opportunity to meet new friends, learn more about my new town, and improve my endurance and strength. I am thankful for the wonderful staff, activities, and facilities. They make living in Grapevine special!
