DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE KEVIN MITCHELL Director, Grapevine Parks and Recreation KMitchell@grapevinetexas.gov

We thank each of you for the support and gratitude you’ve shown our staff this year. Welcome to the Spring 2021 Go Grapevine Magazine! We are optimistic that this year will be one for the books and we’re excited to provide you and your family safe programs, classes and events to take part in. Even though this past year has been challenging, we’ve taken this opportunity to focus on our approach and being innovative in the way we hold events, offer programs, and serve the community. We thank each of you for the support and gratitude you’ve shown our staff this year. As some of you may know, Grapevine Parks and Recreation recently achieved a huge accomplishment by earning accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Out of over 23,000 agencies, only 183 agencies are accredited. This means the Department joins the less than 1% of elite park and recreation agencies across the country who have earned this accreditation. This process allowed staff to not only take pride in the work they do day in and day out, but also helped us recognize areas for growth. I can assure

you, the Department strives to continue bringing the highest quality of service to Grapevine citizens. On another bright note, summer camp registration will open in February, so make sure you scope out the large variety of summer camp offerings in our Summer Camp Directory coming to your mailbox soon. Kids can choose from camps like lake–based outdoor camps such as Dove Creek Day Camp, STEM camps, fine arts camps, excursion camps and a whole lot more. We have continued the adjusted safety protocols for summer camps as last summer. Learn more at GoGrapevine.com/Camps. You can also keep up with the latest programs and events by following us on social media. From myself, and our staff, we hope you and your family kick off the new year with optimism, good health and positivity knowing we are all in this together.

LECTURE SERIES WATER AND AMPHIBIANS ARE AWESOME!

We all understand the importance of water to the planet, but did you know that we can identify the health of our water by the presence of amphibians and other wildlife that call our waterways home? Rachel Richter, Urban Wildlife Biologist for Texas Parks and Wildlife in DFW, will cover traits of clean and healthy water, and how the welfare of wildlife in and near our waterways can contribute to water quality and conservation. Date: Wednesday, January 27 Location: Virtual Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Registration: GoGrapevine.com/JanLecture

THE IMPORTANCE OF POLLINATORS

Did you know that thousands of monarch butterflies funnel through our region each year as they migrate north and south? The deterioration of the butterfly’s natural habitat has contributed to their significant decline. As a Bee City USA Affiliate, Grapevine will continue to restore and enhance local habitats for all pollinators such as monarchs and bees. At this virtual lecture we will learn more about the plight of pollinators and how we can create spaces that encourage and sustain the collaboration of plants and pollinators. Date: Wednesday, February 24 Location: Virtual Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Registration: GoGrapevine.com/FebLecture

RESIDENTIAL IRRIGATION AND WATER MANAGEMENT

All too often landscape irrigation wastes water. On average, irrigation losses are 40,000 – 60,000 gallons per year. Properly managing your irrigation system can help you reduce your annual outdoor water use by nearly 8,800 gallons, equivalent to the amount of water used to take 500 showers! Irrigation professionals will lead this virtual lecture and will cover irrigation basics, controllers, understanding soil texture and much more. Date: Wednesday, March 24 Location: Virtual Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Registration: GoGrapevine.com/MarchLecture

RESTORE OUR EARTH EDUCATION SERIES

In keeping with our theme for April, we will offer a variety of lectures that address emerging green technologies, cutting– edge methods for plastic reduction and methods for habitat and ecosystem restoration. Visit KeepGrapevineBeautiful.org to learn more about these events.

STEPS TO A SMART YARD 1. PLAN AND DESIGN Start with the end in mind. Consider your family ’s needs and desires when envisioning your perfect yard. Once you have a solid idea of what you want, look critically at what you’ ve got. Prioritize your needs and create a plan.

2. REDUCE TURF “ Less” means “ more.” Less turf means more time for you to enjoy your lawn, and more money in your pocket because you won’ t have to water as much. Add more flower beds with SmartScape plants. Add large, sweeping curves to the landscape to make it visually appealing. Add or widen pathways, and use groundcovers where it makes sense. Groundcovers under trees and on slopes can often give the look of grass, but you don’ t have to maintain them.

3. SOIL Organic matter is the key to a solid foundation to help your plants thrive. Compost helps to condition the soil, hold moisture, prevent run– off, reduce erosion, and unlocks nutrients in the soil. One way to improve water absorption is to add raised beds. Raised beds will also help improve drainage, reduce soil compaction, and reduce weeds.

4. PLANTING Use the Texas SmartScape plant database to find native and adapted plants that are well suited to our environment. By choosing native plants, they are naturally drought–tolerant as well as disease and pest resistant. This will reduce your irrigation, fertilizer, and pesticide requirements. When planning, use a wide range of plants and plant with room for their mature size.

5. MULCH Regularly adding mulch to maintain about a 3–inch blanket is good for beds and around trees. Mulch helps reduce evaporation and cools soils in the summer by up to 10 degrees. Mulch also helps reduce erosion, diseases, and prevents weeds from getting a foothold. Never pile mulch up around trunks or stems, instead it should be like a shallow bowl around the trunk .

6. WATER–WISE Eff icient irrigation will save you money. It is best to water in the early morning when evaporation rates are lowest. Water 5–10 minutes (or until runoff begins), then water that area again 10 minutes later for another 5–10 minutes (or until 1” of water total has been applied to that area). 1” of water a week should be enough for native plants to survive even the hottest summers. Look into using drip irrigation. Also, turn off your sprinklers when it rains, because that is just wasting water and money. Source: txsmartscape.com

Grapevine Parks & Recreation Earns

NATIONAL ACCREDITATION In October 2020, the Department earned accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This distinguished accomplishment was awarded during the 2020 NRPA Annual Conference: A Virtual Experience. CAPRA accreditation is the one and only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and measures the agency’s overall quality of operations, management and services to the community. The accreditation indicates that an agency has met rigorous standards related to the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety and services. There are over 23,000 agencies in the United States who are eligible to apply for CAPRA accreditation. As of now, there are a total 183 agencies who are accredited, resulting in less than 1% of all agencies with accreditation. The Department has been working towards accreditation since 2018. As part of the accreditation process, Grapevine Parks and Recreation was required to demonstrate compliance with 151 recognized standards and document all policies and procedures. Often the process helps identify inefficiencies and heighten areas of accountability, all of which translate into higher quality service and operation to benefit the community.

Grapevine Parks and Recreation now joins the ranks of the less than 1% of elite park and recreation agencies across the country.

“This accreditation further validates the quality of operations, management and service to the community here in Grapevine is the best in the industry. It’s rewarding for our team to know they’re doing the very best for the citizens day in and day out,” says Kevin Mitchell, Director of Grapevine Parks and Recreation. “We’re very proud to be awarded and this process of accreditation will help us be better overall.” The process for accreditation involves a formal application, self-assessment, a site visit by a team of trained visitors that result in a written report, and a hearing with the Commission to grant accreditation. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s site visitations were held virtually, making the site visit process much more challenging than years past. Post accreditation, Grapevine Parks and Recreation must uphold the standards by submitting an annual report each year and will be reviewed again in five years. The Commission is comprised of representatives from NRPA, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials, the International City/County Management Association, the Academy for Leisure Sciences, the Armed Forces Recreation Network and the Council of State Executive Directors. THE VINEYARDS CAMPGROUND

Named Top 10 Campground by USA Today

52

GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

We all know camping is the original social distancing, right? The “go outside and play” has been good for us since the beginning. Our parents knew that when they kicked us out of the house as kids and it’s still true today. And even though 2020 changed a lot of things, there’s nothing like “getting away from it all”. Fortunately, The Vineyards Campground and Cabins has been the perfect spot right here in Grapevine to safely get out and connect with the great outdoors especially when we cannot physically connect with our friends and family. Nestled on the shores of Grapevine Lake, The Vineyards Campground is the perfect place for that much needed family vacation, holiday travel or weekend getaway. Apparently, a lot of others also believe the award-winning campground is a great place to be, as The Vineyards Campground and Cabins was recognized in USA Today’s 10Best as a top 10 RV/Campground in the country for 2020. Whether you’re camping in an RV or in one of our 13 fullyfurnished cabins, your biggest worry will be burning your marshmallow while making s’mores.

“We take pride in creating a great guest experience. We are honored to have that validated on a national level by being selected in USA Today’s 10Best,” said Randy Sell, Lake Parks Manager. The campground can accommodate any size rig within our picturesque lake side RV sites with 50amp service, full hook-ups, laundry room, cable TV and Wi-Fi, you know, for those that don’t want to get too disconnected or still need to check in on things at work. The campground also has a

swim beach, playground, wooded trails, a boat ramp, fishing dock, bikes and paddle sport rentals. Oh, did you forget something? No worries. Stop by Hall’s Camp Store inside the park to quickly grab supplies or snacks. And don’t tell anyone our secret, but even though you feel miles from all the hustle and bustle of city life, you’re only a few miles from worldclass shopping, dining, and entertainment. New protocols and procedures means our hosts will continue to provide the best customer service while doing everything we can to keep our guests safe, healthy, and happy. So whether you are looking for a weekend getaway or a trip outdoors with the family, let us help reduce the stress and rejuvenate the soul. We’re here still here for you and will continue to be the go-to sanctuary for those needing to get outside and play. “We take pride in creating a great guest experience. We are honored to have that validated on a national level by being selected in USA Today’s 10 Best,” says Randy Sell, Lake Parks Manager. If you prefer a little more of a rustic camping experience – then pack up the tent and head out to Meadowmere Park where you’ll find another option to surround yourself with natural resources, not social distance restrictions. Another gem on the shore of Grapevine Lake, Meadowmere Park hosts large spaces and big skies, wildlife and space for the kids to run wild, peace and quiet for your peace of mind. For whatever the season and for whatever your reasons, we invite you to join us outdoors at our award-winning campground. Visit TheVineyardsCampground.com to check availability and reserve online.

TESTIMONIAL What does The REC of Grapevine mean to me? Easy to answer that question. It is my family, including my crazy uncle and my sweet old aunt. Such a variety of wonderful folks, both as staff and as participants. Since first attending the Grapevine Senior Center in 2011, there has hardly been a week that I haven’t attend the “family reunion” at least 3 times a week. I have stomped grapes, picked up trash at the park, flexed the flab, (55plus) , Yogart (yoga) listening to “hurting music” every Monday, eaten with friends, heard the choir, played Mah Jong, taken trips arranged by The REC staff and Colette(Italy , Ireland, England) , warmed myself by the fire in the lounge, enjoyed large print books, and even seen the whole family dressed up for great Christmas parties. Love the young staff too! –Barbara Spencer
