DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE KEVIN MITCHELL Director, Grapevine Parks and Recreation KMitchell@grapevinetexas.gov

We look forward to the summer days ahead. Stay safe and stay healthy! Welcome to the Summer 2021 Go Grapevine Magazine! I think it is safe to say that we are all ready for summer, so bring on the sunshine and warmer weather. I am delighted to share with you the many opportunities we have for you and your family to continue to enjoy the exceptional parks and facilities of Grapevine Parks and Recreation. With the changing environments over the past year, we want you to know that our goal remains the same – to provide community support and opportunities to stay both happy and healthy. In our last issue, we celebrated our Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) accomplishments. As we continue to be very proud of those, we also had the chance to experience other areas of accomplishments – some that are not measurable by awards. Many of you are members of The REC of Grapevine, our facility that includes our fitness floor, meeting spaces, basketball and racquetball courts, and other additional spaces. During the February winter storms, we were able

to open The REC to our Grapevine citizens as a warming shelter, providing warmth, places to sleep, showers, and hot meals. Our staff, along with many other city staff and community partners, worked around the clock to ensure the safety of our residents and their pets. This is a testament to the resilience and perseverance that exists in our community, and within the City of Grapevine – for that, we are very proud!

channels or through our annual survey. Please be sure to visit our website and follow us on social media to stay up to date on the latest programming and events we have to offer. We look forward to the summer days ahead. Stay safe and stay healthy!

As we move forward, we are thrilled to bring you another opportunity to enjoy our facilities as we open the new Vine Arts and Events Center, located at 225 West Worth Street. We are excited to offer programs that will include music, theater, acting, vocal, dance, film, and culinary aspects in our new multifunctional center. In addition, certain areas of the building will allow residents to rent spaces for parties, class reunions, luncheons, and much more! As always, we want to thank you for your continued support. We are a community, and we are here for you! We continue to strive for avenues to stay engaged, whether that is through our social media GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

FEATURE

Through the Storm, We United Learn how the City community of Grapevine came embodied together during the essence this tough of time. community by coming together. 8

GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

The February winter storm and power crisis involved multiple severe winter storms sweeping across the United States. As Dallas-Fort Worth experienced a new record low temperature of minus 2 degrees — making it the coldest it has been in North Texas in 72 years — the power grid was struggling to heat the homes of hundreds of thousands of North Texans. The climate emergency caused a massive electricity generation failure in Texas and resulted in shortages of water, food, and heat. The City of Grapevine united in a big way to provide for the community. City employees worked around the clock – from the Fire/EMS Department, Police Department, Dispatch, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Convention and Visitors Bureau – to ensure citizens were cared for. As the extent of the situation became clear, the City activated its Emergency Response Plan, and The REC of Grapevine became a warming shelter supplying food, water, beds, and animal crates to those in need. The 110,000-square-foot facility opened its doors for displaced community members. What started with 50 residents quickly grew to nearly 500 people – with their cats, dogs, birds, and other pets in tow. With the support from Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, and many other local donors, we were able to provide cots, blankets, towels, and other essential needs for those who sought shelter. The Grapevine Parks and Recreation Department staff worked diligently to operate the facility 24/7 and support residents. The outpour of appreciation from the community has been unmeasurable and humbling. “I would like to thank all the wonderful staff at The REC of Grapevine who worked so hard to accommodate my family and I as well as all those families affected by the storm,” said Saul Murillo. “Thank you for working all those hours and staying up late to make sure we were all well taken care of; your kind hearts will not go unnoticed; God bless you all for the help and support that you all offered to the community.”

The warming shelter also provided guests with snacks, water, and three warm meals, but most importantly – a sense of community. Due to the stress of the situation, some of the guests simply needed the comfort of someone to talk to. Staff circled the facility and gave guests company, made connections, and shared experiences. Grapevine is a City of togetherness, and it is times of hardship that reiterate the importance of community. During a time of uncertainty and worry, the City gave residents comfort, security, and compassion. “When staff wasn’t busy taking care of one task or another, they would walk around and ask if there was anything we needed or something they could do for us – pure dedication to the mission,” said Paul and Belinda Tantalo. The City of Grapevine works before, during, and after these types of disasters to minimize impacts on the community and provide residents with the best public service. “I am so proud of our team; they’ve done an amazing thing,” says Kevin Mitchell, Director of Parks and Recreation. “It was a pleasure to serve our community and provide safety.”

Even though electricity had been restored temporarily to some customers, there were still many without power and water as a result of increased demand in the extreme weather conditions. “Thank you to everyone at The REC of Grapevine. Having the warming shelter available was greatly appreciated when temperatures in our house hit about 40 degrees with no return of power expected anytime soon,” said resident Barbara Taylor. “Honestly, we just needed a warm place to sit for the day. I should have known that Grapevine would do so much more than that. Water and hot coffee, blankets had we needed them, outlets for charging phones, along with caring employees who kept everything running smoothly.” GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE

GRAPEVINE LAKE: WATER HEALTH & MANAGEMENT

Did you know that the dam at Grapevine Lake is 12,850 feet long and consists of a compacted earth embankment? The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintains oversight of all government-owned lands surrounding the lake, including the maintenance of the dam. Ami Watkins and Austin Smith, Natural Resource Specialists will explain the role of flood control, inner workings of the Grapevine Lake Dam, as well as natural resource conservation efforts. Additionally, Robin Pugh, Aquatic Scientist from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) conducts testing on the lake’s water. She will cover how testing is conducted, what is done with data collected, how the quality of Grapevine Lake’s water compares with other areas in the region and how you can help improve the quality of the water. Date: Wednesday, August 25 Location: Virtual (Zoom) Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Registration: GoGrapevine.com/AugLecture

DFW AIRPORT’S SUSTAINABILITY & FOOD WASTE SOLUTIONS

Did you know that DFW Airport diverts food waste from select terminals and airline catering to compost? On-site educational programs help stakeholders better manage organic food waste by learning how to sort and collect their food waste so it can be redirected to North Texas farms and compost facilities seamlessly. In addition to the airport’s net-zero emissions 2030 target, this program and others reflect the airport’s efforts to be a good neighbor to Grapevine. Attend this month’s virtual lecture to learn more. Date: Wednesday, September 22 Location: Virtual (Zoom) Time: 7:00 – 8:00 pm Registration: GoGrapevine.com/SeptLecture

TESTIMONIAL Wayne and I appreciate the opportunities The REC of Grapevine is offering virtually during these days of confinement in our home. As the days just go on and on, with no end in sight, it’s good for all of us Seniors to keep our minds active and ‘meet & greet’ others who are doing the same. We didn’t know any of the other participants when we started playing Trivia and Bingo last August. Now we look forward to our “Game Days” and visiting with others when we get together. It is a welcome break in our COVID routine! Thanks to all of the staff for their patience, thoughtfulness and sense of humor! -Ann Berryman GO GRAPEVINE MAGAZINE
