Dear Jamie... ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW I SHOULD DEAL WITH THIS SITUATION? Dear Jamie, My parents have been divorced for three years and now my Dad is getting remarried. The woman he is marrying is really nice and I get along well with her children. After they marry my dad is going to be moving into their house. I don’t like the idea of my Dad living with another family. Since I will only be there on weekends I am afraid that I will feel like a stranger in their home.Help! Any suggestions on how I should deal with this situation? Thanks, Amilla
STEPFAMILIES CAN BE SO MUCH FUN. Dear Amilla, I know this seems scary but you need to remember home is where the heart is. I also think you need to express your feelings and concerns to your Dad. Lastly, focus on the positives. Don’t look at it as your dad living with another family, but as you gaining more people who love and care for you. Stepfamilies can be so much fun. Thanks for writing, Jamie SEND YOUR QUESTIONS TO JAIME MAIL TO: MONMOUTH FAMILY TIMES ATTN: DEAR JAIME PO BOX 7042, FREEHOLD NJ 07728 OR EMAIL TO: TMFT@OPTONLINE.COM

DEALING WITH THE PRESSURE OF SPORTS COMPETITION Sports are meant to be fun and exciting! Because someone wins and someone loses the competition can also make kids feel pressure. A little pressure is OK but too much can lead to unwanted anxieties. One way to relieve some pressure is to be ready to play. Practicing will help you improve your game and your team will learn to work together. The better prepared, the better you will feel. Also, always get a good night’s rest and make sure you have a well balanced meal before the big game. If you really feel the pressure is too much it might be time to take a break. Remember, the game is not about winning or losing but about having fun.

Acupuncture and Autism Autism is considered a spectrum disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. It is on the increase around the world, with current estimates ranging from one in a thousand to one in five hundred children affected. No one knows exactly why the numbers are rising so rapidly. While the condition is not new, doctors and scientists are still unsure of its exact causes. Some say genes play a role, others blame the child’s pre-and postnatal environment. To date, there is still no cure for this devastating childhood disease, and because autism is so baffling and a difficult problem to treat, many parents are turning to alternative therapies, for symptomatic relief. One popular approach is acupuncture. According to acupuncture theory, autism is due to imbalances in the body energy system which can be corrected by acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture can regulate metabolism and reduce allergic responses. Though it may be a challenging experience for the child and the parents, the results seem to suggest that it is helpful in the long run. Most agree that a combined approach to diet and acupuncture can offer symptomatic relief to children with autism, improving mood and communication skills.

HELPING PARENTS AND CHILDREN ADJUST TO THE FIRST DAY OF CAMP. The first day of camp can be very exciting but also a bit overwhelming for children and parents as well. Here are some helpful tips to help everyone adjust to a fun filled day at camp. 1. Before sending your child off to his or her first day of camp talk to them about their concerns. Express their concerns as well as yours to the camp director and counselor. 2. Let your child take along a special belonging. 3. Sending your child to camp with a friend can help comfort both you and the child. 4. Make sure to notify the camp of any allergies or special instruction. 5. Last and most importantly, remember that camp is a learning experience. It gives both parents and children practice at "letting go."

E AT I N G H E A LT H Y We all know that good nutrition and a balanced diet help kids grow up healthy and smart. Here are 5 strategies to improve nutrition and encourage a healthy lifestyle and smart eating habits. 1. It is important to eat meals together as a family . Family meals give parents a chance to catch up with their children & an opportunity to introduce children to healthy foods. Mealtimes should always be a pleasant time. 2. Make a variety of healthy foods available in the home. Stock up on different fruits and vegetables. This will help children make healthy food choices when they are at school or out with friends. 3. Involve your children in preparing a food list and going to the grocery store…This gives you a chance to teach your children about nutrition. Helping prepare meals is also important. They might be more willing to try foods that they helped prepare. 4. Don’t use food as a bribe, reward or punishment. Telling children that they will get dessert if they eat all their vegetable is sending the wrong message about vegetables. 5. A great way to encourage healthy eating habits in your child is to eat healthy yourself. Children mimic the adults they are with everyday. By eating healthy you will be sending the right message.
Snacks With a Twist: PRETZELS Prep time: About 30 Minutes Ingredients: 1 tbsp. Yeast
1 c. warm water • 1tsp. Honey 1 1/3 c. flour • 1 tsp. Salt
Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Put the yeast in a small bowl with the water and honey. Stir a little, then let the mixture sit for 5 minutes. 3. Mix the flour and salt together in a medium-size bowl. 4. After the five minutes is up, check on the yeast mixture. It should be bigger than before and a little bubbly. Add this mixture to the flour and salt mixture. 5. Stir everything together. Use a spoon to start. Fi nish with your hands. The dough is ready when it is still a little crumbly and flaky.
6. Put the dough on the cutting board and knead it like you are playing with clay. Knead it into one big ball. 7. Break off a piece of dough that is about the size of a big gumball or superball. Use your hands to roll it into a skinny snake. 8. Twist the snake into a medium-size pretzel shape, and put it on the cookie sheet. Do this with all the dough, making twelve pretzels. 9. Bake your pretzels for ten minutes. Let them cool and take a bite!

MATTY’S MANNERS Manners Are the Way To Brighten Up Everyone’s Day “Please and Thank You is what I say” Dazzling Table Manners Children may know how to cut with a knife and fork, use a napkin, and know how to sit still at meals, but do they really know proper table manners? Table manners are more than proper eating; it is also about being kind and considerate. Children also need to beaware that others will judge them on how they appear. We do not want our children to embarrass themselves by burping and slurping their way through dinner. WHETHER IT BE DINNER AT HOME OR IN A RESTAURANT, HERE ARE SOME BASIC TABLE MANNERS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR CHILD DAZZLE AT THE NEXT MEAL: 1. Teach children how to place their napkins on their laps and how to sit up straight. 2. Always eat with utensils unless the food is meant to be eaten with fingers. 3. Don't ever stuff your mouth with food, it looks disgusting. 4. Chew with your mouth closed. This includes no talking with your mouth full. 5. Talk to them about the no-no-’s of: double-dipping, slurping, and licking fingers. 6. Teach how to politely ask for something rather than reaching across the table. 7. Explain bread etiquette, when eating rolls, break off a piece of bread before buttering. 8. Alway use a napkin, which should be placed on their laps when not in use. 9. Children should always stay seated until the meal is finished. 10. When eating at someone’s home always thank the cook for the delicious meal, even if it wasn’t.

Great Ideas for Parties: Fun and ....... Educational? Parents are always looking around for new ideas for their kids’ parties. There are so many venues to choose from for all kinds of party fun. Would you think it’s possible to have kids actually enjoy an activity that’s related to, dare we say it……… math? Yes, math, as in arithmetic, with numbers and even fractions? The strategy is to make it fun and somewhat undetected by those little darlings. Here’s how we do it: an ART PARTY! “What does art have to do with math?” you ask……”how is that possible?” We answer: “more than you’d expect!” Ever try to draw a cartoon character when you were a kid? If you were trying to copy a character from the comics and got pretty close to a likeness of that character, but not quite, it was most likely because your proportions were off! Yes proportions, as in ratios, as in fractions. If you do choose a cartooning project for your party theme, whether it’s Minnie, Tweety, Sonic, Sponge Bob or any other, the kids will be working with fractions without even realizing it, in an exciting, fun way. Kind of like adding an egg or vitamins to a milkshake, a hidden benefit! If instead of a cartoon character, your child chooses an origami party, there too he/she will be working with fractions. The partygoers will be folding papers in half, in thirds or whatever is needed, developing an eye to estimate what that fraction looks like (spatial relations). They will be so proud of their colorful and impressive creations; they won’t realize that they’ve learned about fractions! Here are 10 areas of development improved by origami: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Motor skills of both hands Intellectual abilities Creative abilities Activation of both left and right hemispheres of the brain 5. Imagination 6. Emotional and aesthetic experiences 7. Attention 8. Memory 9. Patience. 10. Joy, satisfaction and pride in your own work.
(Info based on “The Folding - A Method of Bilateral Development” by Yuri and Katrin Schumakov, PH.Ds, associated with Oriland.com, a great origami website for information and ideas). For a creative alternative to traditional parties, think of Artisan Studio! There are pastel, mosaic, papier mache and sewing themes as well, one sure to please your child! Artisan offers year round CLASSES and ART CAMP, both Winter Art Camp and Summer Art Camp programs are for kids 4 – 14 yrs old. Full and half day programs available in a cool, clean and comfy studio, with its nurturing and caring staff, sure to inspire and entertain your child!

Riding the Rails Into American History Day Out With Thomas 2009
R
ailroads are as American as apple pie and have always held a special place in the history of our country. In fact, in a nod to tradition and the Founding Fathers, President Barack Obama traveled by train from Philadelphia to Washington, DC, to kick off his Inauguration. This tradition began with William Henry Harrison in 1841 and serves as a tribute to our nation’s beginnings in Philadelphia where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Whether it is railroad history, fond memories, or fictional characters of our youth, our fascination with railroads touches both children and adults. Thomas the Tank Engine is one such train who has enchanted Americans for years.
railroads across the country. Each railroad station stop has its own distinctive history for Day Out With Thomas participants to explore. Many stations have welcomed presidents, dignitaries and celebrities, and led passengers to great destinations. Presented by HIT Entertainment and sponsored by The LEGO Group, the Day Out With Thomas 2009: The Hero of the Rails events run from March to December 2009. Rolling out of the station for its 14th consecutive year, the tour is expected to welcome more than one million passengers at approximately 300 event days. Each event offers fans the opportunity to take a ride on a 15-ton replica of Thomas the Tank Engine & features a variety of Thomas & Friends-themed entertainment.
Thomas the Tank Engine, a blue steam engine created by a father for his son nearly 65 years ago, is now connecting our important train history for a new generation of kids and parents alike. Thomas is teaming up with historic railroads across the country for the Day Out With Thomas 2009: The Hero of the Rails tour that encourages families to embrace the past and preserve their local history. Tapping into the passion that children and their parents have for railroads, Day Out With Thomas events keep this spirit alive at more than 40 regional

This #1 blue engine, based on the real trains that traveled the English countryside in the 1940’s, is the lens through which children experience and explore the magic of the railroad today. The Hero of the Rails Tour – named for the DVD-special starring Thomas and his engine friends in an adventure that tests their bravery, friendship and courage – will also honor local, hometown heroes. At every stop, firemen and policemen will be invited as the guest celebrity story-readers. For tickets please visit www.thomasandfriends.com/dowt.
