POOL SAFETY TIPS FOR A SAFE SUMMER ALLOW KIDS A HEALTHY FEAR OF WATER
ESTABLISH POOL RULES
The most important way to prevent water accidents is to teach kids a proper respect for water. Of course they should be able to have fun at the pool or beach without fear, but they should know that they can't breathe underwater and it can be very dangerous not to follow water safety rules.
Toddlers should be taught at an early age never to run by the side of the pool and not to enter the water without an adult. Older children (especially those that can swim independently) should know never to jump on or push other kids in the water.
DON'T DEPEND ON FLOTATION TOYS Water wings, air mattresses, and inner tubes are fun to play with, but they are not designed to be lifesaving devices. Using them as such leads to a false sense of security (both for children and parents), and if they pop or deflate then the child will go under water.

CREATIVE THINKING AND WORKING OUTSIDE THE BOX We are living in a very intense and stimulating world. For the baby boomer generation and even their children, many of whom are now enjoying parenthood, today’s fastpaced society is quite different from what they are used to. Despite all the bells, whistles, and flashing lights, when we think of artwork, we generally refer to working in fine art forms such as drawing and painting on a flat surface. That is basically how we were all introduced to art when we first began to illustrate the ideas that were forming in our young imaginations. What we actually did was copy images from our everyday lives: our families, pets, homes, trees, flowers, sun and moon, and most certainly a rainbow or two!
We had a natural desire to tell the story of our life through symbols: circles for faces, rectangles for bodies and triangles for skirts, of course. The sun had rays, but the moon did not. We had a great pride in our young abilities to capture our reality. Family ranking would often be shown in size relativity; often the child was bigger than the parents. As the child develops over the years, artistic ability usually improves and the subjects of interest widen. Observational skills grow as does perception due to awareness of diverse surroundings and greater exposure to outside influences such as art, pop culture, museums, school and travel. Often the desire to express oneself differently in art surfaces, and it is a great opportunity to experiment in three dimensional structures. Working in ‘3-d’ offers materials such as clay, wire, papier mache, fabric, paper and wood, as well as combined multimedia forms. By using these materials, children learn how to work outside the one-dimensional box (paper, canvas) and can expand their minds without boundries in form, size, texture, and direction. These sculptural forms offer even greater freedom in creativity. Your child can create anything from found objects at home to purchased supplies in a store to create figures, mobiles, games and toys! Encourage children to use their imaginations as they cut, paste, twist, layer, tie and combine, learning about spatial relationships (creatures), balance (origami mobile) and composition (combined figures). Don’t mention the part about how it will help them in math (fractions and geometry), leave that to us. At Artisan, we do remind our students of these math relationships, during papier mache for example. We may tell them to make the dog’s legs one half as long as its body, or the tree twice as high as the house, and show them how to measure using some handy shortcuts. Try one of our CAMP SESSIONS or CLASSES and see the difference it can make while they’re having creative fun!
READING IS FUN HORSE BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Seabiscuit Vs. War Admiral
Riding For Kids
Featuring the 1938 match race between two legendary thoroughbreds, Seabiscuit and War Admiral, this historically accurate account is suspenseful, as fastpaced as the horses, and packed with race jargon. Children will experience the greatest horse race in history, when Seabiscuit, the underdog, takes on Triple Crown Champion War Admiral in the 1938 Pimlico Special.
This refreshingly uncluttered book offers a thorough introduction to horsemanship. Richter's enthusiastic tone conveys a love for horses that is nonetheless tempered with strict adherence to and promotion of important safety practices. In five chapters, she covers stable care, equipment, tack, clothing, longeing, lessons, jumping, and showing.
Horse Games and Puzzles
Horse Showing For Kids
You can count on horse-crazy kids to be doing something horse-related, thinking about something horse-related, or planning something horse-related 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That's why Cindy A. Littlefield created the Kids' Book of Horse Games & Puzzles. If kids are going to spend their time horsing around, they might as well jump-start their creativity and boost their problem-solving skills at the same time.
For kids who have ever wondered if there is a certain color that complements their horse more than another, what lastminute checks they need to do before entering a show ring, how to dress for success, and much more, this handbook is invaluable. Presenting a wealth of information in a well-organized and enthusiastic manner, the author also addresses the more serious issues such as safety and good sportsmanship.
Horse Care For Kids
Derby Day
The comprehensive guide helps children and their parents choose the right horse and gives guidelines for safe handling and proper care. Full-color illustrations and photographs appear throughout the book.
Drawing Horses This instructional manual is done in an easy, cartoonlike style. Chapters discuss putting the different shapes together, how to create character through details, how to show motion, how to draw foals and ponies, and ideas for finishing touches. A great way for horse crazy kids to learn about art and horses.
Everything Kids Horse Book In this fun book, you'll find a ton of puzzles, games, and activities that will help you learn all about this fabulous animal, including: history, what makes a horse race, breeds, and famous horses.
This book is excellent for children of all ages. It brings to life the excitement of the Kentucky Derby. The book adds fun with it's colorful and imaginative popups and tells the complete story of the race. Includes well researched historical background and photos of past Kentucky Derby's. There is a recording of the call to the post!
Horse Crafts Finally, a craft book with real horse sense! The fifteen fun projects for young horse hobbyists include a sock horse and a bronco bookend. With full-color photos, patterns and simple-to-follow directions, kids will be off to a galloping start. Giddyup!

BATTLE PLAN FIGHTING TO FIND A CURE FOR AUTISM Hello, My name is Justin Gitterman. I am 15-yearold person’s and currently a freshman in Freehold Township High School. I have recently started my own company called Battle Plan. I design and create unique graphic tee-shirts. I have decided to use my company to help find a cure for a neurological disease called Autism. Approximately 1 in 150 children in the United States will be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Autism affects a persons ability to communicate, their motor skills and their social skills. This cause is very important to me because my younger brother has Autism. I personally know how difficult is is for everyone who is affected by this disorder. I want to be able to do my part to help find a cure for Autism. I will be donating 10% of all sales of the Battle Plan Tee-Shirts to Autism Speaks, a non profit organization who is committed to researching a cure, and raising awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
You can order your shirt today by contacting me at 732-577-1857 or The Monmouth Family Times: Po Box 7042 Freehold, NJ 07728 or e-mail tmft@optonline.net.

THE TRUE MEANING OF KARATE
The Karat-Ka's Quest
Many people misinterpret the definaition of Karate. Most people assume it means empty-hand fighting or no weapons; however, the meaning goes much deeper.
The Karate-ka's (student of karate) objective is perfecting mind and body harmony, and since the study of Karate is based on peace with others, they will neither advocate violence nor look for trouble.
Karate (empty hands) attempts to instill in its practitioners a sense of morality, dignity, and self respect, along with physical development and mental wellbeing. Regardless of the age or size of the practitioner, the true spirit of Karate promotes respect amoung people through phyiscal and mental growth and most importantly, by developing perfection of one's character. When one understands the true meaning of Karate, he or she does not have to show off or brag about his or her abilities. One acts with humility and dignity. Karate encourages physical strength and mental energy to be used for constructive causes as helping others, improving society and leading by example. "The biggest obstacle in life is Yourself. Overcome it, and you will achieve the greatest accomplishment of all" -Art Beins 1982
When an individual acquires true confidence within, they can be polite and respectful towrad others, regardless of thier opinion of them. Once this happens, they will never allow themselves to be affected by negative influences. The Karate-ka's ultimate goal is to resolve conflict with an extended handshake and encourage friendship with positive communication. The lesson is never to let the other person push your buttons in a negative way. Wheather it is mental, verbal, or physical situation, by learning how to respond instead of reacting, you gain control over your emotions and it keeps you from saying or doing something that you may be sorry for later. Sustained by a sense of pride, self respect and inner peace, the Karate -ka strives to overcome life's biggest obstacle, which is "yourself". To acquire the knowledge of self-discovery. To have the honesty of being responsible for your actions in knowing you have truly given 100%. To develope the stregnth to overcome the fear of failure. These are the greatest accomplishments of all. Imagine the positive effect you would have on your family and friends if you lived your life with the ideals and philosophy of the Karate-ka. By making every effort to achieve this, you begin to lead a lifestyle of excellence and integrity. This results in more logical and rational decisions, which promote true happiness and continued siuccess throughout your life.

JULY IS NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH National Ice Cream Day - 3rd Sunday in July When you get the urge for a snack on a hot, humid summer night, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? That's right....ice cream! Therefore, it's only fitting that ice cream be given its own special day. On this day, we hope you enjoy an ice cream cone, a sundae, or a milk shake. Set the diet aside and splurge a little...have one of each! Ice cream is nutritious. Its base ingredient is milk, which is loaded with healthy vitamins and minerals.
Did you know Charles E. Minches of St. Louis, Missouri is credited with inventing the ice cream cone? On July 23, 1904 at the World's Fair in St. Louis, he filled a pastry cone with two scoops of ice cream to make the first ice cream cone. There is some controversy over this claim. Italo Marchiony of New York City filed a patent for the ice cream cone months before the fair opened. And, he was selling lemon ice in comes as early as 1896.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

A MOTHER’S MEMORIES Over the last few years, July has become one of my favorite months of the year. Since my twin daughters arrived five years ago, I absolutely love watching their cute faces brighten in amazement as they stare up at the colorful fireworks in the sky. Of course, during the initial pops and cracks of the fireworks show, their little bodies shudder at the loud, booming noises. But, then my husband and I give them a few quick hugs and assure them that they are safe. Soon their eyes are once again fixated on the light show above. Watching a fireworks display, preferably on the beach, has definitely become a Fourth of July tradition in our house and a terrific way to cap off a festive holiday weekend. However, our celebration starts well before the big show. To prepare for America’s birthday, the girls have a blast (pun intended) decorating the house with our growing assortment of patriotic decorations. Around midJune, we’ll take the “American box” down from the attic and begin trimming the house with stars and stripes. They plaster the front door with American flag decals and line the front yard with mini-flags. Inside, they are always super-excited to plug in “Mommy’s American House” for the first time. This particular decoration is an adorable miniature house with blue shutters, a white picket fence, and a flag flying proudly on the front porch. In the evenings, a mixture of red, white and blue fiber-optic “fireworks” light up over the top of the roof. The kids love to see the way the house illuminates our living room each night after dinner. Of course, the most important element of our Independence Day display is the large American flag which flies every day on our own front porch. My husband and I are very patriotic and we would like to pass this sentiment down to our daughters. My grandfather was a World War II veteran and my dad served in the Marine Corps. We often tell the girls how lucky we are to live in
such a great country with so many freedoms and that their grandfather and great-grandfather helped to secure those freedoms for future generations. Yes, they are too young to fully grasp these concepts, but by celebrating the holiday with such fanfare, the girls are growing up with a respect and a love for our country. In fact, one of their favorite songs to sing is “God Bless America” which they memorized and performed for their preschool’s moving-up ceremony last June. Ever since then, they have even been known to enthusiastically belt out the words in the backyard on various occasions, without being prompted! Ask our neighbors; they can certainly attest to hearing many performances of this beloved song! Finally, the girls also enjoy having friends over to wave their flags and have a musical Fourth of July parade in the backyard. They call this our annual “America Party.” Honestly, this concept is something they totally devised on their own. Being twins, they discuss a lot of ideas together and crafted this party all by themselves. As the mom, my job is to set their plan into motion and take care of the details. Their favorite part of the afternoon is the parade, also their idea. The neighborhood kids have a great time marching around, banging drums, blowing horns, crashing cymbals together, and singing songs. After the musical serenade, the kids are always hungry, so they’ll feast on hot dogs, American-themed cupcakes, and enjoy firecracker ice pops. When it’s just our family, of course, the holiday wouldn’t be complete without a barbeque and a trip to the beach. We are certainly “beach people” and look forward to spending the time together on the sand and in the surf for the holiday.
Township mother of two, Anne Mancini-Mannarino doesn’t have to travel far to enjoy a lavish fireworks show with her family. “We have an annual Fourth of July tradition in my family,” says Mancini-Mannarino. “We go to a family friend’s house in Englishtown where there are over 500 people on over 40 acres. The family hosts a cookout, has tons of food, a pig roast, lobsters, a clambake, and the best fireworks show on the East Coast. It's better than Macy's! They spend over $10,000.00 on fireworks and the show is over an hour long. They even have a family member sing the National Anthem under a huge American Flag.” Jackson mother of three, Nicole Beetel enjoys spending the holiday with her extended family. The kids love spending time with their grandparents, enjoying a hot dog or hamburger from the grill, and then spreading out a blanket on the sand to view the fireworks. “We always go to my mom's house in Bradley Beach for a cookout and then walk to the beach to watch the fireworks,” says Beetel. “They put on an awesome show.” It’s hard to believe that the Fourth of July is already upon us again. If you don’t have plans yet, look through the newspaper to find a local fireworks show, invite some friends over to celebrate, and don’t forget to proudly display a flag on your front porch. Now that the hectic school year is over, it’s time to relax, enjoy your family and start a few traditions for your children to hold onto in the years to come. The great thing about Independence Day is that everyone celebrates this holiday, as we are all Americans.
Other area moms have similar traditions and their own ideas about how to celebrate America’s birthday. Freehold

Bastille Day July 14th The French national holiday celebrates the beginning of the French Revolution Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power of Louis the 16th's Ancient Regime. By capturing this symbol, the people signaled that the king's power was no longer absolute: power should be based on the Nation and be limited by a separation of powers.
Le Tricolore The blue, white, and red French flag took shape during the French Revolution. The three colors represent the Republic's three ideals.
ENJOY BASTILLE DAY BY MAKING GREAT CREPES! Crepes Recipe • 4 Cups milk • 5 Eggs • 1 Tablespoon sugar • 1/2 Teaspoon salt • 2 Cup flour • 1 Tablespoon oil or butter for frying Work together as a team and assign different tasks to each child so everyone has a turn adding or stirring. Add eggs one at a time to mixing bowl. Lightly beat eggs. Stir in milk, sugar and salt. Add flour and mix well with an electric mixer. Let rest for 10 minutes (set aside and prepare syrup ingredients) If necessary add more
milk so batter is thin. Heat small fry pan to very hot. Add oil to coat pan. Reheat. Add batter to just cover bottom of pan. Turn to brown other side. Set on plate and cover with a towel. Reheat pan - no need to add more oil. Stir batter before each crepe. If you have an older group of kids, take turns frying a crepe making sure everyone gets a turn. If you have a younger group of kids, have an adult fry crepes while kids mix together homemade syrup recipes for the crepes kids’ cooking party, play cooking games or decorate aprons.

Although the Bastille only held seven prisoners at the time of its capture, the storming of the prison was a symbol of liberty and the fight against oppression for all French citizens; like the Tricolore flag, it symbolized the Republic's three ideals: Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity for all French citizens. It marked the end of absolute monarchy, the birth of the sovereign Nation, and, eventually, the creation of the (First) Republic, in 1792. Bastille Day was declared the French national holiday on 6 July 1880, on Benjamin Raspail's recommendation, when the new Republic was firmly entrenched. Bastille Day has such a strong signification for the French because the holiday symbolizes the birth of the Republic. As in the US, where the signing of the Declaration of Independence signaled the start of the American Revolution, in France the storming of the Bastille began the Great Revolution. In both countries, the national holiday thus symbolizes the beginning of a new form of government.
Strawberry Homemade Syrup Recipe • 1 Pint or 2 cups fresh or frozen strawberries (thawed) • 2 Cups sugar • 1/4 Teaspoon lemon juice Add strawberries to blender and puree. Pour into saucepan and add sugar and lemon juice. Stir together until sugar dissolves. Cook over medium heat about 5 minutes. With spoon, skim foam off top and allow to cool. For the crepe kids cooking party you may choose to prepare this ahead of time or after the crepes are done cooking. It may be difficult to cook the crepes and the homemade syrup at the same time.
Chocolate Homemade Syrup Recipe • 1 Cup cocoa powder • 1-1/2 Cups sugar • dash of salt • 1-1/2 Cups water • 1 teaspoon vanilla
In saucepan add cocoa, sugar and salt together. Pour in water and vanilla and mix until well blended. Heat on the stove for 5 minutes on medium high until sugar dissolves and syrup thickens. For the crepe kids’ cooking party you may choose to prepare this ahead of time or after the crepes are done cooking. It may be difficult to cook the crepes and the homemade syrup at the same time.
Other Ideas for Crepe Toppings or Fillings: • Fresh sliced fruit. Kids who are old enough can slice bananas, strawberries, or peaches while crepes are cooking. • Whip cream • Fruit flavored Yogurt • For a homemade maple syrup recipe

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD MY CHILD SEE AN ORTHODONTIST? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child first visit an orthodontist by age 7 or earlier if a problem is detected by parents, the family dentist, or the child's physician. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if detected at an early age before jaw growth has slowed. Early treatment can prevent future problems and maximize future tooth and jaw development.
AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES? Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age. With treatment options that include ceramic braces and crystal clear Invisalign, everyone can have a beautiful and healthy smile. Twenty to twenty five percent of orthodontic patients today are adults.
WHAT IS INVISALIGN? Invisalign is an alternative to traditional braces that uses a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you're wearing—so you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology, and has been proven effective in treating certain types of orthodontic problems.
