This type of therapy makes it possible for autistic children to participate in horseback riding activities that encourage learning, verbal and nonverbal expression, positive social interaction, and bonding with the horse. It has been a proven method for helping children of all ages who are autistic smile and laugh and even utter their first words during a therapeutic riding lesson. The rewards are priceless! If you are interested in learning more about riding therapy please call Victory stables.
SMART FACTS
A horse has a wide range of vision. A horse can see completely around its entire body except for small blind spots directly in front of its face, underneath its head, and directly behind itself. This is why it's very important not to walk up right behind a horse - you are in its blind spot and if you startle it you may get kicked. A horse is usually not considered to be a "horse" until it is 5 years old. Before that the males are called colts and females are called fillies. However, it is still acceptable to call a colt or filly a horse. A foal is a very young horse and can be either male or female.

Reading Between the Lines... Art and Handwriting Most of us don’t think about handwriting very much, but it does say a lot about us. We’ve all heard about how handwriting analysis can pinpoint personality characteristics and behaviors based on direction, pressure, stroke, consistency and so forth. In art, we are able to see these same variations in drawing, painting and other mediums, both in the text of the artwork or the signature of the child. When looking at ink, pencil or brush strokes of artworks, art educators are able to recognize impulsiveness or meticulous precision, avoidance or preference for color, confident or hesitant markings. Sometimes it may be due to personality, other times due to how the art instrument is held! We have been noticing an increase in poor handwritings and control of art instruments over the past 20 years, as handwriting is no longer considered as important as it used to be in the public school systems and parents as well.
In our classes we encourage our students to come up with a plan, using ‘thumbnail’ sketches to brainstorm much the same way students do in school when working on a story or other project, alone or with a group. We teach them how to further develop and articulate their ideas by first slowing down, then adding details and editing. The results are always a vast improvement over the original and the child feels a great sense of accomplishment and pride. Now the benefits… Parents tell us about the improvements that both they and the child’s teachers are noticing. No surprise to us! The new techniques learned in art are spilling over into other areas. The child has noticed his/her own improvement in art and is applying it to where it benefits most. They are learning to hold their drawing pens, paint brushes, markers and pencils more efficiently and getting better results. We often work with the parents and other teachers in demonstrating correct “grip” of drawing and writing tools, something that many parents aren’t aware of. If a pen or pencil is flopping around while the child is drawing, it is also happening when the child is writing. As their grips become more secure, their control improves. Math scores improve. Why? because the numbers become more legible. Spelling grades improve for the same reason. Parents, please take the time to observe this important development. It will affect your child throughout life. If concerned, speak to your child’s teachers and buy ergonomic grips that help them hold their writing instruments correctly; it will make a difference. Very extreme or unusual gripping may lead to physical impairments to the fingers, wrists and elbows. Occasionally, parents have discovered weaknesses in gripping or problems with motor skills through handwriting development and are referred to an occupational therapist to improve the child’s abilities. Very often the therapist suggests art as a therapeutic activity for the child to enjoy. When this is brought to our attention, we will work along the same lines to help achieve progress as well as artistic growth and pleasure.

Here is a little history and background about kites: Kites have been used for many centuries and many cultures to celebrate events and occasions around the world. Kites have been around for over 2000 years. It is not known for sure who invented the kite but many experts and historians believe that the Chinese are to credit for these "large birds". The kite is and was mostly used as a children's toy but it was later used for scientific purposes. Benjamin Franklin used the kite to show that electricity was present during a storm and it was also used to record the temperature outside.

Newspapers are so much fun for kids!!!!! " I want to know the weather for tomorrow to see if my baseball game will be cancelled" "I need to look for some new trendy styles for spring clothes." -Amanda "I want to find a new place to eat out with my family tonight" -Brittney "I want to see if my cheer teams picture made it in the paper from the competition." -Kristen "I need to know where and what time the movie is playing.” -Emily
NEWSPAPERS HELP KIDS ANSWER QUESTIONS THEY MAY NEED OR WANT TO KNOW. It is important that children of all ages read and understand the newspaper. In today's world kids are filled with information from all over the internet, television and video games. Letting a child get the feel for learning through the pages of a newspaper helps them learn new skills and gain important information. Newspapers also help kids stay updated about what's happening in their community. Reading a newspaper teaches young children many skills. 1. Kids can pick out different stories they want to read by skimming the headlines. 2. Kids learn the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
3. Kids learn about the fundamentals of a story. Every story has a character, plot, climax, resolution and a setting. 4. Newspapers improve language and punctuation while teaching kids to write well. Kids don't even know they are learning! Newspapers make learning fun and easy because they take a hands-on approach to education!

STUDIES SHOW ACUPUNCTURE CAN CURE MIGRAINES IN KIDS Two years ago the Children's Hospital in Boston started a treatment program for child migraine sufferers. At the end of the program, of the children who had received acupuncture treatments, 70 per cent of them stated that their migraine intensity levels were reduced. When parents were asked to confirm, 55 per cent agreed that their children did indeed reap the benefits from acupuncture treatments. Out of all the kids in the study, only one said that their symptoms got worse by undergoing acupuncture. Another study, also done at the Children's Hospital in Boston, focused on acupuncture treatment on children between the ages of 6 months to 18 years. These kids were sufferers of headaches,

back pain, stomach problems, and other common childhood complaints. At the beginning of the study the patients ranked their pain as an eight upon ten. At the end of the year, the average pain rating plummeted to three. The children were also sleeping better and attending school more often. Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice where very fine needles are inserted into the skin of the patients in order to restore the Qi (energy) and ultimately help to relieve pain and treat diseases, is common amongst Singaporean adults and children. Acupuncture has become extremely popular in the USA and many families are using acupuncture to help their children.

Your outgoing and friendly personality makes you a shining star in school.
As a Mint Chocolate Chip lover, you tend to be ambitious and confident. You have a great work ethic and are very organized. You can be a bit stubborn. Nonetheless, your loyalty, honesty and dependability create lasting friendships and close family ties.
There is nothing plain about Vanilla. In fact, if you love Vanilla, you are actually a colorful, dramatic risk taker who relies more on intuition than logic. May Is “Better Speech and Hearing Month” The American Speech and Hearing Association has declared May "Better Speech and Hearing Month". We should mark this designation with an increasing awareness of how speech and learning affects our everyday life. Speech, language and hearing issues are present in every stage of life. Individuals are constantly developing their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. These skills are essential for social interaction and academic success from infancy through adulthood. When there are difficulties in any of these areas, individuals experience a breakdown in their ability to communicate and interact within their environment. Most people take normal speech and hearing development for granted. However there are various reasons why children may not develop within the norm, for example, ear infections or limited tongue movement. Some children are born with special needs and require the immediate expertise of a Speech-Language Pathologist. During interaction with their children, parents should monitor the following: does the child respond to sound or his name? Does the child understand everything that is said to him? Does the child follow directions? Does the child express wants and needs easily? Is the child's speech intelligible? Is the child frustrated when trying to communicate? Any of these factors could be cause for concern!
As a person ages changes occur in their speech and hearing skills that may alter his or her quality of life. These quality changes include hearing loss, neurological impairment cause by stroke or Parkinson's disease, voice changes, difficulty with feeding or swallowing or brain injury. More subtle changes may occur as the individual ages. These changes include difficulty in auditory discrimination, difficulty communicating with others, memory changes and changes in voice and speech production.
Accidents can occur that may cause injury to the brain. A car accident, a blow to the head, or a spinal injury may impair the ability to communicate, cause memory loss, personality changes, changes in hearing, difficulty with reading and writing and emotional changes. Where do you go from here? Parents know their child better than anyone. If your instinct tells you that there may be difficulty with development, contact your pediatrician or family practitioner for guidance. If it is determined that a referral is recommended, a licensed speech-language pathologist should be contacted for a speech and language evaluation and/or audiologist for a hearing evaluation. Other options include
Speech and Language Delay • Auditory Processing Articulation Disorder • Tongue Thrust • Stuttering PDD / Autism • Early Intervention 225 Gordons Corner Rd., Manalapan, NJ • 732-446-0413 Karen Kupfer MS.CCC SLP • Merrill S. Stauber MA.CCC SLP A Therapist Owned Operated Private Practice
referral to an early intervention program from birth to 3 years of age or a referral to your local school district for a child study team evaluation fro ages 3 to 5. Generally, a spouse or family member is the first to notice changes. They can help the individual to identify their needs and begin the process of locating the appropriate professional to help guide them. Referrals for adults can come from many sources including their internist, primary care physician, neurologist, ear, nose and throat doctor, surgeon, other therapists and psychologist. The speech-language pathologist should be licensed by the state of New Jersey and have her certificate of clinical competence for the American Speech and Hearing Association. The credentials should read as M.A.CCC. or M.S.CCC. after the therapist's name. An evaluation will determine areas of strength and weakness. This will result in the formulation of a treatment program that includes goals and recommendations. MidState Therapy Associates is a private practice that provides speech and language evaluations and therapy. Karen Kupfer and Merrill Stauber, own and operate the practice. They and their staff can provide evaluations immediately. There is no waiting list. Please call Karen Kupfer or Merrill Stauber (732) 446-0413 with any questions, concerns, or to schedule and appointment.
