Stencil Type The Brief Show/use fakery in the design process. I am going to do this this by designing a typeface that is influenced by two existing typefaces. As I am yet to learn how to programme a font using fontographer I will design a physical font using a stencil kit. Considerations The brief mentions how typeface are heavily influenced by the ones that proceed them. The style of the typeface I design, the material the stencil is printed on, and the size of the lettering on the stencil is an important consideration. As this will change the functionality of the stencil. Target Audience People who want to use a new typeface. Myself when making design sheets. Realistically design students or people who want access to a free typeface. Tone of Voice This is dependent on the typefaces I decide to take my influence from. However, I want to create a typeface that is suitable for multiple situations, so I am unlikely to design a ‘funky face’. Background Choose the typefaces I want to take my influence from. The materials typically used for stencils, the features that are typical for the Mandatory Requirements Typeface design, stencils, website. Studio Deadline 21/1/13

Stencil Type Typefaces I will be using as a reference. I intend on designing a stencil typeface that is based loosely on the proportions of Futura Extrabold Condensed.

Stencil Type The typeface I deigned. This is the regular style of the typeface. I will produce an oblique style of the typeface also.

Stencil Type Research in to the materials I can use for the stencil. Relaistically I can choose from, paper, card, wood, perspex and metal. However, budget restraints almost certainly rule out using metal. Paper/card will not be durable enough. This leaves me with a choice between wood and perspex. The type of stencil I will use for delivery can be seen at the bottom right of the page. A single letter on a lasercut piece wood. The size I will use is 50mm x 70mm.

Stencil Type Box to store the type. Again, being financially lacking I will have to use wood, rather than the more expensive stainless steel. I intend to spray paint the cheap MDF black and white. This will help disguise the cheap materials and be a time-effective method of printing.

This is the first box idea I came designed. I was trying to mimic/imitate old hand-set type method of storing. With the uppercase in the top shelf, the lowercase in the bottom shelf and the glyphs in the middle shelf. I decided not to use this packaging as it uses far too much material for a simple task as containing 76 stencils. The required parts of the container needed can be seen to your right. This would have far exceeded the budget I have available in this brief.

Stencil Type The second version of container I looked at was more simple than the first. Using less material and being easier to carry.

I abandoned the upper, middle, and lowercase drawers for this version of the container. Instead opting for a simple box with a lid. The pieces I need can be seen to the left. Much less material is used for this packaging, which helps my budgetery issues.

Stencil Type Website. Will be one page where you can set type in stencil type. There will also be a download option.

I think the layout above is a bit clunky. However, this is the general function I want to achieve with my proposed website.
