The Great3 War

Develop a range of stamps to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of World War 1.

I wanted to connect people, leaving decorating paper with pretty images meaningless. Instead I created a campaign which is used as a mechanism to connect people to their history and each other. The campaign is called, ‘The Great3 War’ with the ‘3’ representing the generation gap between people involved in the First World War and people of a similar age living today.

This is a short brief I completed towards the end of the module. The thinking behind this brief helped me secure an internship at one of my top 10 studios. As an idea I am very happy with it, it is the best idea I have had during my time at Leeds College of Art, one that is human-centred and would help solidify our society.

Brief Type Self-initiated

Collaborators N/A

Background There have been hundreds of stamps commissioned to commemorate wars, for this reason I felt it pointless to decorate a stamp with visuals. Instead something more was needed, a set of stamps which pays tribute to families rather than the war specifically.

There isn’t anything I would change about the brief, I intend to develop it further upon after submission and propose to a Government body who may be able to implement the idea. I am feeling confident the real thing could be seen around August 4th.

Considerations

Overall I am very happy with and think the brief shows how my thinking process has developed and matured during my time at LCA. In many ways, this is the type of work I want to do in the future. Human-centred design which help build communities, rather than advertising that sells meaningless products.

I took 20 steps back when starting the brief, by first question what a stamp is. In doing this I realised the purpose of a stamp is to connect people, and that the stamps could be used as an opportunity to connect people to their past their community.

The main reason I am happy with the outcome of this brief is I avoided the obvious. I could have made some very interesting, beautiful images of weapons, military uniform and statistics about the war. I didn’t do this as I feel that approach with stamp design does nothing other than alienate people. This is the one brief in the year where I allowed myself ample thinking time, giving it passing thought everyday since September. In that time I had many ideas, but remained patient knowing a better idea was on it’s way.

What I did

Why I did it

How the research informed me

I researched how the wars have been commemorated. Not just World War 1 or previous stamps, but D-Day events and memorabilia from the war.

I did the basis visual research, looking at the style of photography, colour and typography. The research into how War and historical events are remembered opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities.

I discovered that stamps can be more than nicely decorated piece of paper. The two examples at the bottom of the page will be the main influence in my project - remembering events and showing live events of the day. I set out to develop a campaign that connects people.

What I did

Why I did it

How the research informed me

With the direction set in place I made some more research into ways events in wars have been remembered in future generations. Top left of the page is an interesting project, a book that has photographs of children remember an event in the second world war 50 years later.

I contacted the two institutions to involve people in the project. I chose these institutions as they as heavily involved in remembering the war and helping veterans.

I learnt quickly the institutions were unwilling to help me. They were worried I would ‘get in on their action’. This made me rethink the project, I needed a campaign that could be proposed without that much back-up work. User-generated content and a more organic project is needed in response to the selfish and fearly rejections I have to deal with.

I contacted two institutions connected to the war, with the idea of contacting people willing to contribute to my project.

What needed to change

The Great Great Great War The name refers to the generational gap between the people who faught in the war, and people living today of a similar age.

The campaign will be integrated, making use of digital and print media to engage people in the stamps.

The name is a bit clunky, it’s too long to be usable on social media platforms.

Why it works

The Great3 War A campaign that gives people the chance to connect to their past and their future.

People will contribute their own photographs to the website which will be turned into stamps. Giving people the opportunity to be a stamp, and remember their history.

It is a community that is positive. It gives people the opportunity to be immortalised as a stamp and shows what a stamp is - a means of connecting people - rather than a chance to make pretty pictures.

The name referes to the generational gap between people who faught in the war, and people of a similar age who are alive today.

Why it works

The website is the focus of the campaign, it offers the most to the audience and it is where the stamps are made.

The home page displays every stamps that has been uploaded on an infinite horizontal scroll. Each stamp can be clicked on to access information about who the stamp is uploaded in rememberance of.

It shows the scale of the project, showing them it is a community they want to be involved in. The home page could also become an accurate representation of what Britain is today, and be a way of national bonding.

Why it works

This is the page where you upload an image of yourself, along with the name, relation and location of the person you are remembering along with a note to that person.

Allows you to search a name and see how many other people have uploaded that person. You then have the choice to connect to that person - bringing the nation closer together.

Both pages are easy to use, these are the community building aspects of the website, as such the most important pages.
