DIRECTORS UPDATE
It has been some time since I have made a contribution to the newsletter so I have taken my feet off the desk, put the latte’ down and swept the donut crumbs to one side………….(yeah right !!).
Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on site, no matter where you fit in to the scheme of things, we are nothing without the hardworking loyal people that leave their families to come and give their best at Whittens each swing.
Things don’t always go as planned on these projects and we have had quite difficult circumstances on both Caval Ridge and Tan Burrup early on to overcome, but that’s what we do. That’s what will always set us apart from our competitors. Taking adversity in our stride and getting on with the job. Thank you to everyone again for your commitment and dedication.
We are currently mobilising to the Solomon project with Leighton’s for FMG to complete a workshop and a warehouse using our Laser Screed. This will be the first time it has worked in this environment and we are hopeful of being awarded other similar projects on the successful completion of Solomon.
We have just finished moving Head Office down the road to a larger, better office to allow us to function better and grow when needed. Hopefully we won’t outgrow it anytime soon. Thank you to all staff for your help and patience in this process and a special thanks to those of you that went the extra mile.
We currently have about 10 tenders that have been submitted and awaiting award so we hope to have some good news very soon on the work front.
Another exciting piece of news is that Whittens have been asked to Joint Venture with Decmil on the CCPP (Combined Cycle Power Plant) for CH2MUGL JV on the Ichthy’s project. It is 18,000m3 of concrete, heaven! We will keep you posted on this as things progress.
Strong opportunities that we are currently pursuing include; NSW: Boggabri Coal Project (Antic start Sept 13), NT: Shell Prelude Supply Base (July 13), Ichthys CCPP Project (Oct 13), Ichthys LNG Jetty (Feb 14), Ichthys LNG MOF (Oct 13), WA: Obviously the Roy Hill project is very much on our radar as a consequence we are constantly talking with interested parties including Samsung C&T, other opportunities include the permanent buildings at Wheatstone, Nummaldi below water table project, as well as various workshops in the Northwest.
We are also partnering with Aboriginal businesses as part of our commitment to making a difference in the communities in which we work and to hopefully leave a legacy for the future of younger Aboriginals. Robert has been doing some great work in this area helping us navigate this complex issue. Some of you will be undertaking cultural awareness training soon and the Executive Leadership Team will be travelling to Karratha to undertake this training also.
Final note, congratulations to Mixie and Karen on the birth of their new baby girl, Scarlett Lui.
Clayton and I have recently returned from a trip to Ghana in Africa to get a feel for the culture and to see what opportunities may be there. We took a tour out to a couple of Gold Mining operations and met lots of local contacts to help us understand the challenges that working in Africa might bring. All in all it was a great trip and we are pursuing opportunities and relationships in Africa and hope to have more news in the not too distant future.

MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
It’s been a busy first half of the year with all of us experiencing a lot of changes to the company. The biggest change being the closure of the NSW Office. This was a very hard decision for us to make although, at this point in time, rationalising offices is necessary due to market conditions and for the direction in which the company needs to head for future growth. Another change was to the Executive Leadership Team. This change will allow Clayton, Tyron and myself to step out of the day-to-day operations of the business and allow time to focus on the future growth of the company. As such, three new roles have been created – Chief Support Officer, Strategic Business Development Manager and Operations Manager. As most of you are all aware by now Alistair Forde has been chosen as our new Chief support Service Office and we have been very pleased to welcome Rob Wallis to our company acting as our Operations Manager. The role of Strategic Business Development Manager has not been filled and we are assessing potential candidates at present. We would also like to welcome on-board Alan Ings. Alan has replaced Gavin Nicholson in the role of Chief Financial Officer. Alan has (get Carmen H to fill in these details). We would also like to wish Gavin all the best in his new venture as he takes the step to open his own business. During the month of May, I took a trip up to the Caval Ridge Site. It’s been a while since I’ve been on site and witnessed the crew in action. I’ve always known the success of the company is credited to the hard work and dedication of our people. Being onsite again, gave me firsthand experience of witnessing the brilliant “Whittens Culture”. What an amazing group of people we have in our company. During the trip, I was lucky enough to be a part of Mitch’s warm up stretches and on the second day got a stand-up comedy act from our Bob Hill, what a great way to start the day. I was approached by Mick Fernley who spoke so highly of the team and their performance. I witnessed Graham and Mango received Safety awards and the overall performance of the Whittens Caval Ridge management Team was outstanding. When we market our company to prospective clients, our number one competitor advantage is our people. Since visiting site and witnessing a team of leaders and high performers, I can speak Page: 4
the truth and continue to say “WE ARE THE BEST”. Thank you to all of you for what you do each day at work. The success of the company is a credit to you all. The month of June was a busy time in the Office with all hands on deck preparing the submission of our Yandi tender. It was a big effort to get this Tender out and we would like to say a “Huge” thank you to everyone that was involved, as usual everyone goes above and beyond what is expected. The first half of the year was time again to review the direction of the Company and map out a plan to move the company forward. The Executive Leadership group met for two days in Perth to draft the “Whittens Strategic 3 Year Plan”. The Plan is currently being finalised and will be presented to everyone shortly. In saying this, thank you to everyone who completed the Employee Opinion Survey, we do this survey each year to gather the opinions of you all and use your feedback to make Whittens a better place to work. The information gathered in this year’s EOS has been incorporated into our strategic Plan. Another Annual process is to complete the Annual 360 feedback Survey. All the Whittens Managers and Supervisors have now been provided the results of their 360. For those of you that are not familiar with the 360 feedback review process, Whittens recognise that high performers have a fundamental desire to receive regular and constructive feedback in order to achieve better results and to acknowledge strengths. All the Whittens managers and supervisors that were selected received feedback from a number of people in the business. This feedback is provided confidentially by their managers, peers, and reports where applicable. The feedback focuses on two main areas – job performance, and how your behaviour reflects Whittens values. I have personally read each of the 360 feedback results and would like to congratulate and acknowledge the following people. All of the people listed below received an Outstanding (Gold Medal) score:
John Clark
Peter Kretchmer
Bob Hill
Tanya Fantini
Braddon Fall

PROJECTS
Caval Ridge Much has been happening on the Caval Ridge Project! The most exciting event probably being the move to the new Morris Camp in Moranbah. We previously called Dysart home- an hour drive to and from work- so everyone is very happy with the new 10 minute trip. The food is pretty great too- we have had an amazing seafood night and a Mexican Fiesta night this week- Delicioso! Apparently the spicy chicken legs were ‘THE BEST’- no one but Tex would actually know that as he ate them all…
Jess and Amanda
Jess & Bob (Jess won against him at pool)!
The Easter bunny paid us a visit with big Cadbury eggs for all- Crackers conveniently ‘misheard’ the 2 per person instruction as 20 per person… Jess and Amanda ate so much chocolate they had to go on a detox the next day- that actually ended up consisting of double coated Tim Tams dipped in coffee…
A word from our new Project Manager David Evans: I would like to thank everyone within the business I have been in contact with since arriving and especially my Team on site for their welcome and I look forward to the challenges ahead in finishing Caval Ridge together safely and profitably for the success of all of us involved.
Lee Daly- Jess & Amanda bought the boys easter eggs- they loved it and was a big morale booster.
Braddon Fall- (Nippa)- He has his favourite bum bag on- very fashionable.
Amanda Gray- and her easter eggs/coffee she received from Ronny the surveyor
Here at Caval we are all very excited to soon be welcoming some friendly new faces imported direct from the NSW office- Tanya Fantini and Jayson Gomez should hopefully be mobilised by the end of the month. Tanya however isn’t quite a definite just yetone of her contract requirements is that she gets steel-capped high heels instead of the regular lace up steel-cap boots. We are currently in talks with ‘Oliver’ regarding design possibilities and having them approved by the Caval Ridge Safety team. We shall keep you posted on the outcome. Sadly though as we welcome new faces we will also be losing a few to the WA Tan Burrup Project. WA will be lucky to have them and they will all be very much missed here on site- especially Bob Hill, his red beard and his pre-starts… Since he left- morning morale has dropped significantly… We are looking at printing out a life size cut out of him on the big printer to prop up outside the crib huts. Page: 8
Graham Benson and Mango (Matthew Connolly)- received safety awards and won some safety glasses (fashionable ones- not the ones we get free as PPE)

Tan Burrup
The team
Whittens began to mobilise to The Tan Burrup Project on 2nd of April with a small crew to establish the site. Our team were ready to hit the ground running with mobilisation going well. Our laydown area and site office was established. We have begun prefabbing steel for footings and have now commenced dropping in cages. We were ticking all the boxes… However, the team can only go as fast as the client allows. This is due to delays in client approvals of suppliers to expedite material supply coupled with a slow hand over of excavations to allow works to proceed. Despite all of this, we have an awesome team and are chafing at the bit to get going.

Cancer (22 June – 22 July) You like to know what’s going on in the lives of everyone in the galaxy, however, you tend not to know what’s going on in your own. If you are lucky, your friends will tell you. Cancerians only get dressed because they have to, and their fashion sense can only be described as “erratic.” You are more likely than any other sign in the zodiac (except Pisces, who does not iron) to iron your clothes by sleeping with them sandwiched between the mattress and box-spring. Likewise, you can stretch one pair of underwear out for almost a month. Your home is like your very own Biodome, and you can remain indoors for months at a time. Despite your need to be everyone’s saviour, you need no social interaction. SWAT teams often show up, mistakenly thinking there’s a hostage situation. A Cancer is like a walking Ladies’ Home Journal, quick on the draw with shortcake recipes and helpful hints on how to talk to your teen. Whether they know it or not, they are all born with an exceptional talent for cross-stitch. So much for buying the world a Coke - they would breast-feed the world if they could. This trait is not gender-specific. You will never excel in sports because you have to rest for fifteen minutes every time you breathe. You do not mind, since you plan to conduct your career from the comfort of your own bed. You maintain your questionable health through a steady diet of Ho-Ho’s and beer. You also imbibe a great deal of Pepto-Bismol in order to confuse your numerous ulcers. People walk on you often, actually, not often - all the time. If you think someone is screwing you, you’re probably right. The most entertaining thing about this is that you like it. You strive to be a doormat. Cancerians coin their own words to describe philosophical concepts. This is why it is no surprise that George W. Bush is a Cancer. Cancerians have minimal influence over their friends, even though they show up with homemade soup to remedy every minor or major tragedy. However, they wield their power through the fact that they know what everyone is thinking at any given time. This is why they are never invited to parties. Cancerians claim to be “tactful”. The word for this is actually “shiftless”. Cancerians are always appointed to take their drunken, drooling friends home. These friends are usually Pisceans

RED DUST SAFETY ‘Hello to all our yellow soldiers…! Well, unfortunately the time has come- Red Dust Safety is being relocated back to the red dust of the Pilbara… Although I am looking forward to getting back to the west- there will be many people who will be greatly missed. Some of those I have worked with before while others I have only met on this job. But I’ll tell you one thing’s for sure- you will never, ever meet a better bunch of people than who we have… We have lost some comrades along the way who think they are going to ‘greener (or redder) pastures’ only to discover that here is as green as it gets! I know that we will all meet up again sometime, somewhere- hopefully sooner rather than later. Some boys I hadn’t worked for in over a year and a half and I could hardly recognise them! Snowy had a full head of grey hair, Mangos chin had doubled in size, Coops jokes had gotten worse and Gavin Durrant… hadn’t changed at all (bastard!)… In summing up- the only safety related thing I can honestly think of saying is- keep looking after your mates and stay safe… I would hate to hear that anyone in our crew was ever hurt or injured. People- we also need to keep the pre-start fun as well! There are enough employees in Whittens to share that around- surely. On that note I am also in talks with the directors regarding buying me a hot air balloon to sail across from WA every few weeks to do a surprise pre-start. The balloon will be propelled by gas collected from Durro’s donger. So farewell for now and I shall keep in touch. Love always- Red Dust Safety.’

Golden Arc Rescue Australia Check out this rescue site, I’m trying to raise money for Golden Ark Rescue. www.gara.org.au WHO ARE WE? Golden Ark Rescue (Aust) Inc. is a registered Animal Welfare Charity who have been assisting displaced Golden Retrievers and Golden Retrievers in crisis for over eight years. We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of lost, neglected, abandoned, abused and unwanted Golden Retrievers, and those well-loved Goldies whose families simply can no longer take care of them due to changing circumstances. We do not operate a public animal shelter as such, rather we rely solely on a small but strong network of committed, caring and compassionate foster carers, including Samara and Rob, who willingly and lovingly open their homes and their hearts to Golden Retrievers in need whilst they are readied for their new forever homes. WHERE ARE WE? Golden Ark Rescue has been rescuing Golden Retrievers since early 2004 and is situated near Brisbane in Queensland with services reaching Golden Retrievers in need in every corner of our beautfiul State. We also do our very best to assist Goldies in most other States of Australia too, when and where possible. My wife Samara, the rescue pups, and me. (I’m the furry one with the red hat!) If you get time to check out the website, even better, and we are also on facebook. Our new website will be up and running soon, Cheers!

TRAVEL
Queenstown Ski Package ‘HOT DEALS’ OAKES CLUB RESORT
New Zealand ski resorts are the home of breathtaking mountains and thriving ski fields. Queenstown is the hub of four world class New Zealand ski resorts – Coronet Peak, the Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone. Other great New Zealand ski resorts to try out include Mt Hutt and Mt Ruapehu. Queenstown is South Island’s premium winter sports gateway and year-round hub for action-packed holidays awash with thrill-packed diversions, For sheer thrills, you might choose to leap out of a plane, jump off a mountainside high above the town or plunge headlong from Kawarau Bridge, where bungy-jumping began back in 1988. Taking to the water in a speeding jet boat, you can powerslide through spectacularly rocky canyons along waterways aptly named the Shotover and the Dart. Along the Queenstown-Wanaka axis lies a winter wonderland of ski-fields that together cover the full spectrum of snow activities, from fearsome downhill runs to benign beginner slopes, from Olympic superpipes to happy-go-lucky dog-sledding. Only rarely does bad weather close the slopes for long and the wide variation in terrain means there are encouragingly gentle slopes for learners as well as stirringly challenging runs for experienced skiers.
