Dear valued partners Welcome into the month of June. This month in Indonesia we celebrate the end of Ramadan with the Idul Fitri celebrations on June 14th until June 16th. Further in Bali we have the unique Mekare-Kare in the Village of Tenganan, the famous pandan fight on June 8th & 30th. Also there are several temple anniversaries such as the Sakenan temple anniversary on June 9th. Also on June 9th we celebrate Kuningan and the exceptional Mekotekan Rituals. And we also have the 40th edition of the Bali Arts Festival from June 16th until July 14th. On June 13th we have the Tanah Lot temple Piodalan anniversary and on June 19th we celebrate the Uluwatu temple Piodalan anniversary. Several festivals will take place such as the Festival Danau Sentani and Asmat Cultural Festival in Jayapura, Papua. Bakar Tongkang Festival 2018 in Bagansiapi-api, Riau. The Bromo Exotica Cultural Festival at Mt. Bromo, the Horas Samosir Fiesta at Lake Toba, North-Sumatra and the Solo Batik Carnival in Surakarta. We are also showcasing new hotels and hotel updates so please check out our Hotels section to find out more. We are also featuring Wellness Hotels here in Bali as the demand for Wellness, Spa, Yoga, Healing and Wellbeing packages is rising. I also would like to continue our series of ethnic people in this edition. This month I would like to introduce you to the Mandar people, a local tribe from West Sulawesi. Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active volcano located at the center of two concentric calderas north west of Mount Agung on the island of Bali, Indonesia. The south east side of the larger 10Ă—13 km caldera contains a caldera lake. The inner 7.5-kilometer-wide caldera, which was formed during emplacement of the Bali (or Ubud) ignimbrite, has been dated at about 23,670 and 28,500 years ago. The first documented eruption was in 1804 and the most recent was in 2000. Active volcano and Lake Batur in the caldera The eruption that brought this volcano to be visible above the ocean is one of the most forceful across the earth. This volcano is marked by a collapsed top, called a caldera.

From 1 Nov 2016, Alila Villas Soori will be re-named “Soori Bali” and shall revert to owner management. The property will no longer be managed by Alila Hotels and Resorts. Story of Soori Designed by internationally renowned SCDA Architects headed by Soo K Chan, Soori Bali is an inspired expression of contemporary Asian architecture that blends seamlessly into the rice fields and coastline. Lush gardens, water courts and air wells organically interplay with the elements of volume, light and surface. Our eco-friendly resort is constructed and managed in accordance with EarthCheck international environmental standards. A truly holistic project, this development was designed through a collaborative process which included the study of the local environment and consultation with the neighbouring communities to incorporate not only the site’s climatic parameters, but also age-old social and religious customs. Processional routes were conserved throughout the site, allowing the locals to descend to the beach during religious ceremonies. Traditional irrigation systems of the nearby rice paddies were extended through the site to allow for proper drainage. Following the architecture’s carefully studied forms that promote natural ventilation, planters, low shrubs and taller trees were also positioned to maximise wind flow through villas and common spaces, avoiding the creation of wind barriers. Unlike the previous resorts you’ve stayed in since touching down on the Island of Gods almost four weeks ago, Fivelements is home to just nine exclusive suites, all of which have open verandas and river views. The walk to my suite took in the eco-resort’s swimming pool, spa and yoga studio and really gave me a tranquil impression of the place. During stay in fivelements, Bali you saw just one other couple which really had an impact on the sanctuary-like nature of Fivelements.
“We live in the time when tourism is rife, travellers are rampant and thanks to the many social media channels available at the touch of a button, few places stay untouched for long. With Instagram at its peak popularity, the second a so-called Influencer posts an image of a tropical paradise, people flock there in their hoards to get a picture perfect square snap of their own. So, it rarely happens that one stumbles upon a hidden haven that is both flawless from start to finish and still relatively undiscovered. Enter, Fivelements in Ubud, Bali.”
The suite was jaw-droppingly beautiful; the kind of place you immediately want to memorise for future inspiration when designing your dream home. The main bedroom had timber floors, high ceilings, airy white curtains and included a huge four-poster bed which then led to a stylish bathroom behind it with an outdoor shower. However, the main feature was undoubtedly the outdoor stone bath, housed by a bamboo enclosure at the front of the bedroom, its proximity to the Ayung River a matter of metres. The thing that most stood out to me about Fivelements was the exquisite details of the place and how perfectly they created a healing and serene space. From naming each of the suites after a Balinese element (mine was Bayu for air) to customised lighting in the bathtub the seven colours of the chakras, to the teak wood bed, Balinese art and basket of fresh fruit. If you want the mother of all facials, the kind that will trump any previous spa treatment, try the Fivelements Super Food Facial, which will indisputably be two of the best spent hours of your life. Like the rest of the resort, the spa was picturesque and serene, and again overlooking the river. The ingredients for my facial were laid out, and the therapist talked me through each of them; their benefits and how they’d be used. From fresh pineapple serum, to cleansing coconut milk, to a honey and brown sugar scrub, to refreshing aloe vera gel, chilled quartz crystals and a Spirulina and seaweed mask it was superfood by name, superfood by nature, and you not sure any future facial will even come close. Following the facial had a flower bath in the room overlooking the river. You was told about the significance of the different coloured flowers; red for love, yellow for clarity, pink for joy. Sipping on Balinese ginger tea in my post-facial glow as the river rushed by was about as good as it gets. As someone who is partial to a Prosecco (or several) this wasn’t even a factor during my stay; as often happens when I’m in a blissed out state and fuelling your body with facials and raw foods, the last thing on my mind is a glass of bubbles. Which brings your to the food. Given its location on the outskirt of Bali’s foodie hub, one would expect good things but once Fivelements outdid themselves. From almond crust pizzas to perfect passionfruit panna cotta to black rice pancakes and the greenest of smoothies; it truly was a culinary delight. Bernd’s intelligent cues to the body and influences of Tibetan Buddhist teachings artfully woven into the class were complimented by the soundtrack of birds chirping, trees rustling and the rhythmic breathing to help facilitate the experience. You’ll also had your long-awaited introduction to Embodied Flow guided by Jess, a yoga teacher recommended by numerous expat friends living in Bali. Embodied Flow draws from a range of styles of yoga and somatic movement systems to facilitate a deep mind-body connection. Jess inspired me with her ability to impart valuable knowledge of the body without compromising the deeper layers of the practice. Desa Seni Restaurant With 80 percent of the local produce grown on the property, you are guaranteed a healthy, fresh meal at the Rumah Makan Restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner to guests of the property as well as outside visitors. I took full advantage of the fresh vegetarian options, including the Raw Pasta made of spiralized zucchini and yellow squash served with a chilled Roma and sun dried tomato sauce. The full dining menu offers a mix of local and Western dishes, appealing to all tastes.

The wish you had the opportunity to continue with the full three-series treatment of acupuncture, as the recommended minimum, but you will say that, the immediate relaxation that set in during the session itself made it well worth the visit.

But inside, the mesh windows and canvas walls really do make you feel like you’re camping. Rice stalks sway against the mesh window in the bathroom, and I look out on a copse of trees that’s a salve to city eyes.
The bathroom sink is imaginatively set into a desk - alas, there’s no ordinary desk, so if you’re looking for a working holiday spot, this is probably not the best option. If you’re looking to relax, the facilities are just what you need.
You’d think it would be quiet, but the daytime humming of cicadas and singing of birds creates a natural symphony. The lack of walls and glazed windows means that you feel right in the thick of it. It’s a curious sensation to feel secure inside but at the same time not exactly removed from the outdoors.
Many activities can be arranged with the hotel’s assistance. You can pop off to see a traditional dance performance, go mountain bike riding, or, if you’ve got the energy, fit in some white-water rafting.
The furnishings are lavish, with damask velvet lounge chairs, Venetian-style mirrors, decorative lamps, and a draped mosquito net over the queen size bed. Arrangements of fresh flowers, picked from the well-caredfor gardens, include some varieties I have never seen in Bali. No television or phone interrupts nature’s music. The bathroom is separated from the rest of the tent by a curtain, and the shower has elegantly striped wraparound curtains. But the pièce de resistance is the sparkling chandelier, which lends a regal air to the “room”.
The on-site restaurant is inside a dramatic alang-alang roofed building, and boasts a communal table and a wall mounted with framed mirrors - it has a cosmopolitan, Italian feel. Due to the small number of rooms, meals are set, rather than à la carte. Unless you head into town, this means you’ll be eating whatever is on offer. The dinner consisted of spring rolls, a tuna steak with onion rings, fries and vegetables, and a Balinese pudding. It was a bargain at US$15, considering the surroundings.

The Mandar People The Mandarese are an ethnic group in the Indonesian province of West Sulawesi. The Mandar language belongs to the northern subgroup of the South Sulawesi languages group of the Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family. The closest language to Mandar is the TorajaSa’dan language.
(Mamasa Regency and part of Mamuju Regency), while at Pitu Ba’ba’na Binanga itself there are a variety of dialects and languages. The strength of these fourteen kingdoms complement each other and the term Sipamandar (meaning, strengthen) as one people through a covenant that was sworn by their ancestors at Allewuang Batu in Luyo.
Before there was a regional expansion, the Mandarese along with the Bugis people, Makassar people and Toraja people formed a cultural diversity in South Sulawesi. Although politically West Sulawesi and South Sulawesi are divided by a border, the Mandarese are historically and culturally close knitted to their cognate relatives in South Sulawesi. The term “Mandar” is actually a unified name among the seven coastal kingdoms (Pitu Ba’ba’na Binanga) and seven mountain kingdoms (Pitu Ulunna Salu). In terms of ethnicity, the Pitu Ulunna Salu or commonly known as Kondo Sapata are classified as a part of the Toraja group TRIBAL PEOPLE OF INDONESIA

The Mandarese people are dominated by the vestiges of traditional relations. Feudal nobility, including royal rulers of the past mara’dia, merges with the administrative and governmental system.
In Mandarese culture, they are quite similar to the Bugis people. They engage in fisheries by exporting dried, salted or fermented fish and also in agriculture by cultivating coconut palm, dried rice, coffee, tobacco, as well as forestry. It is believed that the Mandarese people are some of the best sailors in Sulawesi, who serve in the sea transportation sector.
However, the following interesting trend was observed in Mandarese society is that many women left their traditional work at the loom and began to engage in the fish trade instead.
A traditional musical instrument is a two-stringed lute.[10] The traditional house of the Mandarese is called boyang.[11] Customary festivals such as Sayyang Pattu’du (Dancing horse), Passandeq (Sailing on a outrigger canoe) are practiced by the Mandarese. Bali’s Top Secluded Beaches Bali is an island in flux — especially in the south. It’s a maelstrom of construction: villas, roads, jetties, reclamation. A magnet for tourists for generations, the island welcomed over five million international visitors in 2017. So you’d expect pretty much every beach along the coast to have been colonized by sunbeds and invaded by travel groups long ago. Mercifully, that’s not the case. But secluded beaches on this island in Indonesia generally don’t stay hidden for long. It’s not uncommon to turn up at a formerly entirely secluded beach and find a new access road, a ticket desk, several warungs (restaurants), three determined village ladies peddling sarongs and a van load or four of organized tourists. For the connoisseur of secluded beaches, the place to start is the Bukit peninsula, the egg-shaped bulge that protrudes from the bottom of Bali as though the island has just finished laying it. Sculpted, towering limestone cliffs create myriad little bays, with sand in hues from gold to creamy white. Challenging descents — sometimes involving hundreds of rock-cut steps — promote seclusion every bit as dramatically as they tone the quadriceps. Here are six of Bali’s top secluded beaches where you can play with a little privacy:
1. Karma Beach Aspiring sybarites can skip the hipand-thigh workout and head for Karma Beach, a private beach club at Karma Kandara, with stylish bungalows and a glorious cliff-top spa up above (a second spa is set to open on the beach by 2018). A dinky cliff railway cruises down through monkey-filled forest to an expansive pale sand bay where fringing reef creates a sheltered, turquoise lagoon. SPECIAL NEWS
2. Thomas Beach On more of a budget? Thomas Beach is nestled between two of Bukit’s most iconic surf breaks, Uluwatu and Padang Padang Look for the sign to Thomas Homestay and follow the white dirt track. Golden sands, turquoise waters and sculpted rock formations framed by towering cliffs, lava rock and shrines make the beach — technically part of Padang Padang Beach — one of the Bukit’s most attractive. It’s fairly rare in Bali to be able to sleep right by the ocean on a budget, but besides food, drinks and surfboard hire, there are simple (if overpriced) homestays bang on the sands.
3. Nyang-Nyang Beach Nyang-Nyang is another classic, concealed beach that delivers the Bukit trifecta of golden sands, rugged cliffs and turquoise ocean. Backed by a meadow where cows occasionally graze and patches of jungle, it feels quite deliciously remote. Apart from a couple of cold drink sellers, a handful of junk sculptures and some nests carved out of the jungle, the beach is currently undeveloped. But the new track down the cliff, while steep, is quite the picnic compared to the 500-odd steps of yore, so that is changing fast.
4. Tugel Bias Beach Despite the Instagram clichés, many of Bali’s beaches are black, brown or gunmetal grey — occasionally interspersed with surprising patches of white-gold sand. Tugel Bias, a little cove just south of the ferry port at Padangbai is one of the cutest of these white sand anomalies. It’s accessed via a blocked gateway with a sign advertising ‘WHITE SAND BEACH.’
5. Kedungu Beach Out of the wealth of dark sand beaches, Kedungu, a surfing beach not far north of the famous sea temple at Tanah Lot, is ripe for discovery. It’s a peaceful place, fringed by palm groves and rice fields, where the sweeping curve of the breaking waves seems to stretch on and on into the distance. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the Canggu resort village. SPECIAL NEWS
6. Nusa Penida Beach For pristine — and largely unfrequented — beaches it’s worth heading off the mainland to Nusa Penida, around 40 minutes by speedboat from the port at Sanur. Here, the limestone coast has eroded into spectacular forms — natural arches, broken bays, sea caves, freestanding pillars and more. And, though some of the more accessible beaches have been given over to seaweed farming, nestled between the cliffs are some jaw-dropping spots. To the south of the island, Pantai Atuh is a seductive curve of golden sand looking out onto a sheltered bay where an encircling promontory descends to a startling, jagged arch and scrubclad pinnacles surge from the ocean. A hundred-or-so steps lead down from headlands on either side of the beach, where the staff of the simple palmthatched warung may well be your only company. On Penida’s west coast, with views across to neighboring Nusa Ceningan, the giant mola-mola fish draws scores of dive boats to Crystal Bay in season, and the beach fills up with snorkelers and day trippers.Stock up at the warungs for the 20-minute hike over the headland, where white sand Pandan Beach, backed by palm-clad jungle, is usually deserted. Further south, beyond the startling rock formations known as Broken Bay and Angel’s Billabong, lies what’s perhaps the jewel in Penida’s crown: Kelingking Beach. A terrifying rock-cut path, in places more climb than hike, leads down a cliff and along the spine of a razor-sharp promontory. The reward? The most flawless half-moon of white sand, backed by shady caves, fronted by gin-clear waters, and apparently untouched by human hand. Though Instagrammers may gather at the top, the beach itself provides splendid isolation — the perfect contrast to the busyness of Bali, still visible across the strait.

He said there are 500 million vegetarians in the world the largest being in India totaling around 350 million and the second largest in China 50 million. China and India ranks among Indonesia`s 5 largest tourism markets in the world, he said, adding the other three are Europe, Australia and Singapore. The minister said Chinese are the largest in number (size) reaching 2.2 million with the highest growth (sustainability) at 42 percent and the largest foreign exchange contribution (spread) in the tourism sector.

Ingredients:
125 g fresh turmeric root (about 4.5 oz or 3/4 cup, roughly chopped) 20 g fresh ginger root (a large finger sized piece) 2-4 tbsp fresh lime juice 1-2 tbsp honey (or substitute maple syrup or sweetener of your choice) Instructions:
- Clean and peel turmeric to remove any loose skin or blemishes. Put it in a blender with sliced ginger root and 4 cups of water. Blend until smooth. - Pour mixture into a saucepan and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and add lime juice and honey to taste. I used 2 tbsp of lime juice and 1 tbsp of honey, but I can see that more of either would be nice too depending on your taste. - Strain through a very fine sieve, nut milk bag or muslin cloth (remember, it’ll stain), pour into a glass bottle or jar and refrigerate.

AirAsia X named world’s cheapest airline for international flights AirAsia X has been named the world’s cheapest airline for international flights. According to the 2018 Global Flight Price Ranking released by travel planning website Rome2Rio, the low cost carrier’s international flights cost 0.07 US cents per kilometer, making it the cheapest in the world.

Lion Air opens new Surabaya-Haikou charter route The country’s largest private low-cost carrier, the Lion Air Group, has opened a new charter route from the East Java capital of Surabaya to Haikou, the capital of the Chinese island province of Hainan. Flying once a week, the fleet’s Boeing 737-900 ER aircraft will serve the new route, accommodating up to 215 passengers starting Friday.
In collaboration with Hainan United Airlines Travel Group Co., the JT 2661 flight will depart on Fridays at 5:40 p.m. local time from Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport and arrive at 11:45 p.m. at Haikou Meilan International Airport. The Indonesia-bound flight JT 2660 will fly Saturdays at 12:55 a.m. from Haikou and land in Surabaya at 5 a.m.

Surabaya airport named most punctual in Southeast Asia Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, East Java, has been recognized as the most on-time airport in Southeast Asia in April 2018 by UK-based air travel intelligence company OAG. According to OAG’S research, Juanda airport recorded over 1,000 flights in one month. The results were based on independent research performed by OAG, and were published in the April 2018 OAG Flightview Monthly OTP Report. The on-time performance for Juanda was ranked at 95.5 percent, higher than Singapore’s Changi International Airport’s 87.1 percent. On-time performance refers to arrivals and departures within 15 minutes of their scheduled times.
Three airports run by PT Angkasa Pura 1 (Persero) made the list. Besides Juanda, Supadio International Airport in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, came in second place with 90.2 percent and Lombok International Airport was in fifth place with an on-time performance of 88 percent. “On-time performance is one of the most important benchmarks in the global aviation industry. This international recognition is achieved with the support of every stakeholder, such as airlines, AirNav Indonesia, the Indonesian Navy, the groundhandling service provider and the passengers. KLM to relocate to Terminal 3 The state-owned operator of SoekarnoHatta International Airport, PT Angkasa Pura II (AP II), announced on Friday that the Netherlands-based KLM Royal Dutch Airlines would be moving to Terminal 3 on May 15. Previously, the airline operated at Terminal 2. Erwin Revianto, Soekarno-Hatta senior manager of branch communications and law, told Tempo.co on Friday that his division fully supported the relocation. Erwin explained that the move was confirmed this week and was part of AP II’s commitment to improving its services to airlines and passengers. KLM check-in will be at counters C01C07 in Terminal 3.
“Passengers are expected to arrive early to ensure a smooth departure,” Erwin reminded. KLM Indonesia country manager Wouter Alders said in a statement obtained by kompas.com that the relocation would improve the flight experience of passengers traveling to Kuala Lumpur and Amsterdam. Relocations of international flights to Terminal 3 started in May 2017, when Garuda Indonesia made its move on the first of the month, followed by Saudi Arabian Airlines on July 10, Vietnam Airlines on July 12 and China Southern on Aug. 29. The latter is best known for its prized heritage Geringsing ‘double ikat’ cloth, which female villagers wear as part of family regalia during the rituals, and which you can witness their making process on tours to Tenganan anytime of the year. During the height of the event that regularly coincides in the months of June and July, the special duelling arena is set up, village houses are gracefully adorned, and girls ride large man-powered wooden swings as part of the festivity. Around this main arena will be packed with cheering villagers, visiting spectators and photographers. Inside, brave boys and young men take turns in pairs to ‘fight’ each other, inflicting each other’s bodies with lashes from the leaves’ sharp thorns – there will be blood. Yet surprisingly, each contestant shows no pain. Rattan shields seem to be mere accessories. Wounds are simply treated with an herb, turmeric and vinegar mix, and which miraculously help dry up wounds in minutes.

Kuningan Day Kuningan day - The end of the Galungan holiday Kuningan day, that marks the end of the Gaungan holiday, is celebrated every 210 days, ten days after Galungan. The Balinese believe that Kuningan day is the day when their ancestors return to heaven after visiting the earth during Galungan celebration. They make offerings to be given to the ancestors on their farewell day. The offerings include yellowed rice (Kuningan is derived from the word kuning which means yellow) which is placed in a small “bowl” made of coconut leaves. Other common offerings a seeds, fish and fruit like papaya and cucumber. The yellow rice is the symbol of human’s gratitude towards God for all the life, joy, wealth, health and prosperity given. The bowls are decorated with a small figures of shadow puppets which represents angels that bring joy and wealth to earth. It is also said that on Kuningan day Ida Sang Hyang Widhi (God) is blessing and giving prosperity to the whole world. Many people believe that the celebration should be done before noon, before gods and goddess’ return to the heavens to continue their asceticism.
On Kuningan day you can see tamiang and endongan decorations hanging outside homes and temples. Tamiang means - and is formed as a round - shield and represents protection, defense, and the cycle of the globe. It functions as a reminder to humans of karma and that they should protect themselves from bad behavior. Endongan means bag of provisions. It is made of coconut leaves and shaped like a bag or a pocket. The Balinese put different things like seeds, fruits, tuber inside the endongan. Some people see it is a symbol of food supply for the journey of the ancestors from earth to heaven. From a spiritual view, endongan represents the essential provisions that every human should carry-knowledge and homage. In some villages, especially in Gianyar region, Barongs or ngelawangs - lion like creatures - are going from house to house followed by kids playing traditional Balinese music instruments. If a barong arrives in front of your house, you should give an offering called canang with sesari (money) on it, after receiving the offering; the barong will dance and bless your house and your family.

Sakenan Temple’s Anniversary Sakenan Temple or ‘Pura Sakenan’ as referred to by locals, is an important temple in the southern region of Bali, located on the north-western shore of Serangan, a small island located 10km south of Denpasar. Once strong for its unique feature of pilgrimages during the 210-day piodalan temple anniversary celebrations with processions leading to the Serangan Island on foot or by traditional wooden boats, reclamations in the 90s have changed the ways, as well as the natural landscape of the island. Sakenan Temple was built in the tenth century by high priest Mpu Kuturan, who arrived in Bali in 1001AD before the fall of the Majapahit Kingdom, on a mission to restructure the socio-religious aspects of the Balinese communities. The temple is comprised of two significant areas, the largest having undergone renovation except for its antique walls around the temple grounds, and a smaller part that retains its olden features. The old temple was built of limestone and corals sourced from the surrounding coastal reefs.
Within and around the temple grounds are large and towering trees that are silent witnesses of the temple’s past. Given the infusion of dynamism in Balinese Hinduism, these trees are adorned with chequered cloths and are regarded as dwellings of guardian spirits of the temple grounds. Hundreds of pilgrims from the various village temples in southern Denpasar flock to the Sakenan Temple for its 210day piodalan temple anniversary celebrations which coincides with the holy day of Kuningan, 10 days after the Galungan Day celebrations, another major Balinese Hindu observation. Before the reclamations that took place in the 90s pilgrims would carry ancient heirlooms and sacred temple objects at low tide by foot through mangrove forests towards Serangan. At high tide, traditional outriggers taxi the crowd over the waters. Now, the land mass is easily reachable by automobiles via a 110m bridge, making the colourful and unique boat rides memories of the past.

Upon arrival, devotees proceed towards the Pura Susunan Wadon, a temple separate from the main Sakenan Temple grounds, located an approximate half kilometre to the east. Good to Know about Sakenan Temple Pujawali or the grand celebrations and the piodalan or temple anniversary of Sakenan Temple falls on every Kliwon Kuningan Saturday, the day of the Kuningan observation in the Balinese 210-day Pawukon calendar and is held over three days with the height of the revelries on the Sunday. Access to the Sakenan Temple and the Serangan Island is easy via the bridge. However during the three-day temple celebrations, entrance fees apply to both pilgrims and visitors on cars and motorcycles. Fees range from IDR 2,000-5,000 and are collected by the village officials for the community’s fund. Several exceptional ritual dances are performed during the height of the piodalan celebrations, usually over the Kuningan weekend. These range from Barong dances to various Tari Topeng or mask dances, and all provide rare, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. As with any Bali temple visit, you may enter in proper temple attire, that is, a simple sarong and waist sash. Try to walk around offerings placed on the ground instead of stepping over them. Try not to obstruct a line of procession in progress. Also, women must remember not to enter temples during their periods.

Mekotekan Rituals The Mekotekan Rituals are part of the traditional Kuningan Festival that is celebrated to battle evil spirits that are said to attack Munggu Village. The Kuningan Festival is held every six months according to the traditional Balinese calendar. The festival’s rituals are diverse but aim at purifying the locals and the village. By eliminating any evil spirits, the locals are able to ensure that only good spirits remain. The ritual involves men reenacting the Blambangan war by walking to temple carrying wooden sticks. They are sprinkled with holy water and proceed to lay the sticks into a huge pyramid. Some men will climb the pyramid to “face off” with each other whilst cheered on by the large crowd. The rituals commence at 2pm and last throughout the afternoon. This ritual is believed to date back to the 17th century around the time of the Mengwi Kingdom. Legend has it that the Mekotekan ritual was conducted to welcome the kingdom’s soldiers back from the battlefield after fighting against soldiers from East Java’s Blambangan kingdom. On their way to the center of the Mengwi kingdom, which was Munggu village, local residents cheered them as the winners of the war. This ritual was banned for a time during Dutch rule of Indonesia, around 1915, but the village resurrected this important cultural event and it remains today. Visitors are welcome to watch the ritual, though should not participate as it is considered disrespectful to the Balinese people.

The 40th Annual Bali Arts Festival 2018 The Bali Arts Festival is a cultural treat for lucky visitors who are in Bali until mid-July. The festival traditionally runs midJune through mid-July. It is the perfect moment to witness Bali’s wealth of performing arts. You’ll also catch a glimpse of various cultural highlights from other islands in Indonesia. It’s one of the main highlights in Bali’s calendar of events. The annual celebration showcases various artworks and cultural achievements. It invites the public to the Taman Werdhi Budaya Arts Centre in Denpasar. Most of the daily exhibitions and art performances are focused here. Tanah Lot Piodalan Anniversary Tanah Lot Temple is one of Bali’s most important landmarks, famed for its unique offshore setting and sunset backdrops. An ancient Hindu shrine perched on top of an outcrop amidst constantly crashing waves; Tanah Lot Temple is simply among Bali’s not-to-be-missed icons. The onshore site is dotted with smaller shrines alongside visitors’ leisure facilities that comprise restaurants, shops and a cultural park presenting regular dance performances. The temple is located in the Beraban village of the Tabanan regency, an approximate 20km northwest of Kuta, and is included on most tours to Bali’s western and central regions.
Legend of Tanah Lot Dang Hyang Nirartha, a high priest from the Majapahit Kingdom in East Java who travelled to Bali in 1489 to spread Hinduism, arrived at the beautiful area and established a site honouring the sea god, Baruna. Here, he shared his teachings to Beraban villagers, only to face opposition from the village chief who soon gathered his loyal followers to dispel Nirartha. The priest resisted, incredibly shifting a large rock he meditated upon out to sea while transforming his sashes into sea snakes to guard at its base. The rock’s original name, Tengah Lod, means ‘in the sea’. Acknowledging Nirartha’s powers, the humbled chief vowed allegiance. Before setting off, Nirartha gifted him a holy kris dagger, which is now among the sanctified heirlooms of the Kediri royal palace. Pilgrims bring these relics each Kuningan day by foot on an 11km pilgrimage to the Luhur Pakendungan temple, the priest’s former meditational site. THIS MONTH EVENTS
Good to Know and What Not to Miss Although you cannot enter the temple grounds, the panoramic views and cultural offerings are highlights to enjoy. On the holy day of Kuningan, five days prior to the temple’s anniversary date, the heirloom pilgrimage is one of Bali’s festive parades worth witnessing. Uluwatu Temple ‘Piodalan’ Anniversary Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Uluwatu, one of six key temples believed to be Bali’s spiritual pillars, is renowned for its magnificent location, perched on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 metres above sea level. This temple also shares the splendid sunset backdrops as that of Tanah Lot Temple, another important sea temple located in the island’s western shores. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is definitely one of the top places on the island to go to for sunset delights, with direct views overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dance performances. Balinese architecture, traditionally-designed gateways, and ancient sculptures add to Uluwatu Temple’s appeal. Without a doubt, what makes Uluwatu Temple spectacular is its cliff-top setting at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the waves of the Indian Ocean. ‘Ulu’ means the ‘top’ or the ‘tip’ and ‘watu’ means a ‘stone’ or a ‘rock’ in Balinese. Several archaeological remains found here prove the temple to be of megalithic origin, dating back to around the 10th century. There are two entrances to Uluwatu Temple, from the south and the north.
A small forest lies at the front and hundreds of monkeys dwell here. They are believed to guard the temple from bad influences. The serpentine pathway to the temple is fortified by concrete walls on the cliff side. It takes about an hour to get from one end to another as there are several fenced points along the way to stop. The views from the bottom of the water surging up against rocks and the ocean horizon are remarkable. The Balinese Hindus believe that the three divine powers of Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva become one here. That belief results in making Uluwatu Temple a place of worship of Siva Rudra, the Balinese Hindu deity of all elements and aspects of life in the universe. Pura Uluwatu is also dedicated to protect Bali from evil sea spirits. Good to Know about Uluwatu Temple Every six months according to the Balinese 210-day Pawukon cycle, big temple anniversary celebrations are held at the temple. The temple’s keeper, the royal family of Jro Kuta from Denpasar, are patrons for the event. Precautionary signs warn visitors of the monkeys grabbing attractive items such as sunglasses and cameras. However,

they can be calmer when approached with peanuts or bananas, lending an opportunity to retake stolen possessions. There hasn’t been any significant erosion on the shoreline underneath the temple’s towering cliff. Believers regard it as a manifestation of the divine power that protects Pura Uluwatu. Public facilities are available, but not in the temple area. Unlike some other tourist destinations in Bali, Uluwatu Temple area has limited amounts of hassling vendors. Visitors must wear a sarong and a sash, as well as appropriate clothes common for temple visits. They can be hired here. The best time to visit is just before sunset. A Kecak dance is performed every day at the adjacent cliff-top stage at 18:00 to 19:00. Visitors are charged a nominal fee. What makes it the most favorite venue to watch a Kecak dance is the sunset background of the performance. There’s no public transportation to get here and going back in to town will be difficult without any prearranged ride or taxi. A guide is not necessary, though helpful. The service offered is hassle-free at very minimum prices.

Bakar Tongkang Festival 2018 in Bagansiapi-api Riau In the city of Bagansiapi-api, capital of Rokan Hilir Regency in the Riau province, the fateful decision of the first Chinese migrants to leave their homeland behind and settle in Riau on the island of Sumatra is annually commemorated through the festival called Bakar Tongkang, meaning Burning the (last) Ship on which they sailed in. This year, this unique age-old tradition will again be held on June 28th to 30th, 2018. Celebrated annually on the 16th day of the 5th month according to the Chinese calendar, the tradition that is also known as Go Gek Cap Lak (from the words Go meaning 5th and Cap Lak meaning 16th) is highlighted with the symbolical action of torching a replica of the traditional Chinese ship as the highlight of the festival. The Bakar Tongkang Festival is the largest annual event in the Rokan Hilir Regency. During the festival, rituals and prayers by participants at the main temple precede, followed by cultural processions, a variety of distinct oriental attractions such as the Barongsai (Lion Dance) are held, as well as an entertainment stage set up for performers who hail from Medan, Singkawang (West Kalimantan) as well as from neighboring Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore rendering Hokkien songs. At the pinnacle of the festival, which is the burning of a huge ship replica, the crowd anxiously anticipates where the main mast shall fall. Locals believe that the direction where the main mast falls whether facing the sea or facing inland) will determine their fortune in the coming year. If the mast falls to the sea, they believe that fortune will come mostly from the sea, but when it falls on land, then fortune for the year will mostly come from land. The replica of the ship can measure up to 8.5 meters in length, 1.7 meters in width and weigh up to 400Kg. The ship would be kept for one night at the Eng Hok King Temple, blessed, and then taken in a procession through the city to the site where it will be burnt. The procession of the Tongkang also involves the Tan Ki attraction where a number of people demonstrate their exceptional physical abilities by piercing themselves with sharp knives or spears yet remaining unharmed, somewhat similar to the Tatung tradition at Singkawang in West Kalimantan. Arriving at the site, thousands of yellow prayer paper pieces will be attached to the ship bringing prayers from the people for their ancestors, before the ship is then finally burned into flames. Believed to have originated in 1826, the festival is rooted in history when Chinese immigrants first set foot in the area and later gave the name to the land as what is known now as Bagansiapiapi. It is believed that the ancestors of Bagansiapi-api were Tanglang people of Hokkien descent who originated from the Tong’an District (Tang Ua) in Xiamen, Fujian Province, in South China who left their homeland in ships that had a flat base which were used to transport sand and mined minerals and came to be known today as ‘tongkang’. Initially, there were 3 tongkang ships in the expedition, however only one ship reached the coast of Sumatra. Led by Ang Mie Kui, the ship managed to arrive on the shore of THIS MONTH EVENTS
Riau as it followed the flickering lights of fireflies which are locally known as ‘siapi-api’. Arriving in an uninhabited land which consists of swamps, forests, and grassland, they decided to settle here, eventually giving it the name Bagansiapi-api or “Land of the Fireflies”. Pledging to never return to their homeland, these migrants burned the tongkang and thus became the ancestors of the Chinese ethnic group in the area. The town of Bagansiapi-api can be reached overland in about 6-7 hours’ drive or approximately 350Km from Pekanbaru, the capital city of the Riau Province. The Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport in Pekanbaru connects the city with Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan, and Batam. There are also international flights from and to Singapore as well as Kuala Lumpur and Malacca in Malaysia to Pekanbaru. Alternatively, from Port Dickson in Negri Sembilan, Malaysia you can take the ferry that will take you directly to Bagansiapi-api in about 4 hours.

Asmat Cultural Festival 2018: Discover the Legendary Carvings of the Asmat Prepare yourself to head ‘far east’! The cultural expressions of Papua’s renowned Asmat Tribe will be the highlight of Indonesia’s most eastern island as the Asmat Cultural Festival is scheduled to take place at the Yos Sudarso Field, Asmat Regency in the Province of Papua on 19th to 23rd June 2018. The main feature of the festival is obviously the signature wood carving art of the Asmat. The Asmat are known to have the capability and artistic nature of carving wood into fascinating artworks directly without drawing any sketches first. To the Asmat, their woodcarvings are inextricably linked with the spirit world, and therefore, are not principally considered as aesthetic objects. Much of the highly original art of the Asmat is symbolic of warfare, headhunting, and warrior-ancestor veneration. For centuries the Asmat, preoccupied with the necessity of appeasing ancestral spirits, produced a wealth of superbly designed shields, canoes, sculptured figures, and drums. Aside from wood carving exhibitions and auctions, the festival will also present hundreds of artisans and performers who will showcase their exceptional skills in weaving, boating, and various dances and traditional musical performances. At the closing of the festival, the fine artworks of the Asmat will then be displayed for open auction. The Festival has its origin in the 1980’s when missionaries held drawing and carving competitions for school students. The response was overwhelming that the missionaries eventually raised it to artisan’s level that attracted a lot of highly skillful carvers in the entire region. In the late 1990’s, the Regent of Merauke at the time, R. Soekardjo (at the time Asmat was part of Merauke Regency) gave his full support to hold an annual cultural festival. When Asmat was established as its own Regency in 2004, the festival was moved from its initial location in Soska Building to Yos Sudarso Field that allowed more spectators to enjoy it. Located at the southern part of Papua facing the Arafuru Sea, Asmat Regency gained UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage site On February 2011. The Asmat region shot into world spotlight when in 1961 Michael Rockefeller, son of New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller disappeared here on his second expedition. On his first visit, Michael was so deeply impressed by the Asmat sculpture that he intended to bring these fascinating artworks and have them displayed at an exhibition in the United States. The town of Agats is the administrative center and gateway to the wonders of Asmat Regency. To reach Agats, you can take a flight from Jakarta or Bali to Timika and then continue by smaller plane to Ewer. From Ewer, you must take a speed boat to reach Agats. Solo Batik Carnival 2018 shines light on batik diversity The Solo Batik Carnival (SBC) will be held in mid-June and aims to shine a light on the archipelago’s batik diversity with the theme “Ika Paramartha”. The head of the SBC foundation, Lia Imelda, said to Antara on Wednesday, “Ika is derived from ‘Bhinneka tunggal ika’ [unity in diversity], while ‘Paramartha’ means the good things that bind us together.” Lia said the theme was highlighted due to recent political and social tensions, and because many people have been self-righteous lately. The event organizers want to unify tribes, religions, races and other elements in Indonesia. SBC coordinator, Ragowo Ade Kurniawan, said in previous years, the SBC highlighted only Solo’s batik, while this year the SBC focuses on unifying each region’s batik, from Sabang to Merauke. “We will feature batik from various provinces in Indonesia. There are eight provinces that will be highlighted, namely Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Java and DKI Jakarta,” he said.

Java will feature the Jawa Dwipa collection, while Sumatra will highlight Nagari Minangkabau. To be able to perform in the carnival, 75 percent of the costumes used should be batik (stamped or printed). Like in previous years, organizers have banned hand-drawn batik due to concerns about disturbing its standards when used as carnival costumes. The head of creative economy development in the Surakarta tourism office, Nunuk Mari Hastuti, said the Solo Batik Carnival has made it onto the Tourism Ministry’s list of “100 Wonderful Events in Indonesia”. “The Solo Batik Carnival event aims to preserve batik in an interesting way, because Solo is a batik city,” said Nunuk.

About The Sigale-gale, Life-sized Puppet Show on Samosir When visiting the Island of Samosir at Lake Toba, then watching the Sigale-gale, a wooden puppet dance performance, is a must. Sigale-gale is a Batak life-sized puppet show, which is traditionally performed at funerals but may now also be performed for visitors. Carved from the wood of a banyan tree and dressed in the traditional costume wearing a red turban, loose shirt and blue sarong, the Sigale-gale stands on long, wooden boxes where the operator makes it dance to percussion music accompanied by flutes and drums. There are many versions of the story behind Sigalegale. Some others believe, that the origin of the puppet was linked to a local legend that tells of a childless woman named Nai Manggale. The legend adds that as she lay dying on her deathbed, Nai Manggale asked her husband to have a life-sized image made of herself to be called si gale-gale and to have a dirge played in front of the puppet. Unless this was done, her spirit would not be admitted to the abode of the dead, which would in turn force her to place a curse on her surviving spouse. Hence, to avert the misfortune, the Sigale-gale was created.
Apart from the legend, in the Toba Batak tradition, Sigale-gale was shown at funeral ceremonies to revive the souls of the dead and to communicate with them. Personal possessions of the deceased were used to decorate the puppet, and the priest would invite the deceased’s soul to enter the wooden puppet as it danced on the grave. To watch the performance, visitors are asked to pay Rp 80,000 per person. Today, vistiors can see four dances in one show, starting with the Early Gondang, Gondang Somba, Gondang Mangaliat, ending with the Gondang Sitiotio.

They express this wish in the phrase “Minal Aidin Wal Faidzin” or “Mohon Maaf Lahir dan Batin” which means “forgive me from the bottom of my heart for my wrongdoings in the past year”. Family and friends, cook traditional foods, new clothing is worn, children receive gifts of money and visits are made to recreational parks. Idul Fitri day begins with mass prayer gatherings early in the morning at mosques, open fields, parks and on major streets. On the walk home from the mass prayers, quick visits are made to friends in the neighborhood to ask for forgiveness. Following the morning prayers and neighborhood visits, people visit their close family members around town. Family members go to their parents first and then to the most senior relative’s house to ask for forgiveness with them. At each house, foods, drinks and cookies or snacks are served. Employees may also visit the homes of their senior bosses in the company or critical business colleagues and government officials to give them Idul Fitri greetings.

Here are various traditions associated with Idul Fitri in Indonesia: - Mudik – mudik or also known as Pulang Kampung is the activity which migrant workers turn to their hometown or village during major holiday, mainly Idul Fitri. The motivation behind this homecoming tradition is to visit one’s family, especially their parents. - Ketupat – is a rice cake wrapped in rhomboid-shaped casing made of young coconut frond leaves. Usually ketupat is served with various accompanying dishes and vegetables such as Opor Ayam, Sayur Santan, or Sambel Goreng. - Sungkem – is a Javanese custom of asking for forgiveness at Idul Fitri which demonstrates the respect given by young people to the family elders. The young person kneels and bows their head to the elders’ knees and ask for forgiveness. - Takbiran – is the prayer celebration on the evening of the last day of Ramadhan, to herald in the Idul Fitri holiday. Chants are praised to Allah, drums are beat endlessly; dances, songs, religious prayers and sermons are given in public displays of excitement and praise. - Zakat – the obligatory poor tax that is paid by Muslims during the Idul-Fitri period. Zakat should total 2.5% of one’s income, depending on the nature of the gift. Zakat is paid to charitable organizations, neighborhood groups or through direct distribution to the poor and needy in the neighborhood. - Salam tempel – is a term used to name gifts of money given by adults to children in their families and neighborhood. Usually the Rp5,000, Rp10,000, or more notes is put in a small envelope. One unique thing about Salam Tempel is that the money given is usually “new” money, fresh from the bank. - Kartu Lebaran – is a greeting cards that people usually sent to Muslim friends (whether they themselves are Muslim or not). Calligraphy artists design customized cards for customers on sidewalks near post offices and major market areas. - Halal bihalal – is a gathering where employees from a company, friends, colleagues or members of an organization gather to share a meal and ask each other for forgiveness. Non-Muslims are often invited to participate in the gathering also.

Born in Ujung Pandang on 1979, this lady started his first tourism journey in Bali since 22 years ago by joining an inbound DMC which specializes on Japanese Market. On August 3rd 2009, she decided to be part of Asia World Indonesia Asia and Middle East Division. As part of Travel Designer and Reservations team, she works closely with her Manager, Mr. Ribut Dwi Santoso, to design and create affordable travel proposals include with the detail costing and itineraries. She is also actively communicate with each of her clients to ensure that every proposal meets the clients’ expectation.
