WELCOME Dear Camper, A very warm welcome to the Girl Scouts of Utah’s summer camp program! With the help of some super star campers (learn more about Camper Council on page 3), we have put together a jam packed summer of pure awesomeness! This summer we will be welcoming back some of our rocking programs from 2014 while introducing a ton of new, exciting programs created by girls just like you! This year’s programs are full of new and exciting adventures that will challenge you to step out of your comfort circle and build courage, confidence, and character. You are sure to find a camp program that is just right for you! Horses? We’ve got 25! Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and sailing? Aye, Aye Sir! Pottery, painting, and photography? Sure thing! Amber “Frog” Kuecker

Amber is Girl Scouts of Utah’s Outdoor Program Manager and Camp Cloud Rim Director. Amber graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in Leisure, Youth and Human Services with emphases in Outdoor Recreation and Programming. Amber has an extensive background in leading multi-day backpacking and kayaking trips as well as facilitating leadership and teambuilding programs. She has worked in youth organizations as an Outdoor Instructor, Youth Sports Supervisor, Director of Campus Recreation and Ropes Course, and Youth Associate. This will be Amber’s twelfth summer working with Girl Scout camps and her fourth directing Camp Cloud Rim.

Carly “Tangerine” Cahoon

Carly is Girl Scouts of Utah’s Outdoor Program Specialist and oversees Trefoil Ranch’s summer camp program. Carly graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism with an emphasis in Experiential Education and Adventure Outdoor Programming. She has worked in various youth organizations as Camp Director, Program Director, and Mentor. She loves all things outdoors and enjoys teaching about the benefits of balancing your life with nature. This will be Carly’s second summer overseeing Trefoil Ranch.

Brianne “Ace” Butterfield

Brianne is Girl Scouts of Utah’s Seasonal Camp Director for Trefoil Ranch. Brianne started working with Girl Scouts of Utah as the Leadership Director at Camp Cloud in 2012. After the summer season was over, she continued to work with Girl Scouts of Utah’s Outdoor Program by being a Program Lead for minicamps (weekend programs during the school year) and assisting during the summer of 2013 when needed.

What is Camper Council? A group of girls who help us plan camp. Who are these girls? All the girls who attended camp last summer were emailed a Summer Camp Survey where they answered all sorts of questions about summer camp – over 70 girls responded with their thoughts and ideas. Then 19 joined us at one of our in-person meetings this fall. These girls loved camp so much they wanted to help us plan camp for all of you!

MEET THE CAMP STAFF Our counselors are energetic and caring role models who are carefully selected by the camp directors based on their talents, skills, and experience. Staff members are recruited from various colleges, local community agencies, and Girl Scout referrals. Our counselors receive an intense week of staff training where they are taught: risk management, program development, Girl Scout program and philosophy, age level characteristics, environmental education, behavior management, outdoor skills and much more. Those counselors working in high adventure programs receive additional training specific to their activity areas. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified. Please note: Girl Scouts of Utah does hire male camp staff to work in program areas such as horses, ropes course, archery, waterfront, and rock climbing as well as kitchen and administrative positions. Male camp staff sleep in separate quarters away from campers – they are not in the units living with the campers. If you know someone over the age of 18 who would like to live and work at camp for the summer, please refer them to our website (www.gsutah.org/work-at-camp) for a Seasonal Staff Application.

Camp Open Houses

If you’ve never been to camp before, we invite you and your family to visit us during one of our Open Houses. On your visit you will have the opportunity to meet the Camp Director and counselors, see where you might sleep, check out the dining hall, and explore the program areas (stables, waterfront, art room, ropes course, and archery field). Summer Camp 2014 It’s Your Adventure – Live It! ER COUNCIL MP

Theme Weeks

We are excited to roll out theme weeks at both of our camps this year! Each week will be a different theme that you will get to experience through lodge decorations, opening campfire, all camp, a theme meal and great experiences. These themes will not interfere with the camp you sign up for, but will only enhance your fantastic camp experience! Themes were decided on by your Camper Council. June 16 – Olympic Heroism Get ready to strut your stuff in fun Olympic activities that will use the strength of your brain and your muscles!

July 21 – Wild West Howdy Partner, do you have a hankerin’ to join us in the Wild West? So tip your hat and get ready for games and Wild West hoe down.

June 23 – Survivor Work with your group to complete various tasks throughout the week while building a fort, learning about camouflage, and going on a counselor hunt!

July 28 – Wet ‘n’ Wild It is summer and it is hot! From Wet and Wild Kickball to water balloon relays, you are sure to stay nice and cool in this jam-packed, water-filled week of awesomeness!

June 30 – Fandom Enjoy different themed days based on some of your favorite stories like the Hunger Games, Percy Jackson or Doctor Who!

August 4 – Puttin’ on the Glitz Enjoy a dance where you can really shine with decorations you created, ideas you suggested and a red carpet walk that lets you tell the world just how awesome you are!

July 7 – Superheroes Explore what qualities it takes to be a hero and how to recognize them in yourself. Plus, design and wear awesome costumes all week! July 14 – Opposite Week Get excited for pajama dinner with pancakes, mismatch clothes, crazy hair, wear your clothes backwards, sleep in and stay up late, and ice cream for breakfast!

August 11 – Around the World Enjoy learning about other cultures this week with games, songs, dances, and food from Africa, Asia, South America, Australia, and Europe!

Spirit Awards

We are all about enthusiasm and just plain happiness at camp! This summer Camper Council is introducing the Spirit Spoon which will be awarded during final campfire to the group who demonstrated the most spirit throughout the week! The group awarded the spoon will get to decorate the wooden spoon, sign all their names on the spoon, and have it proudly displayed on the Spirit Spoon board in the lodge with their group picture. We will also have the Awesome Possum Awards that will be given out during final campfire. Each group will be presented with an award that is specific to their group (such as The Best Group Laugh, The Most Energy, The Best Made-Up Song, and so forth). These awards will be hung in the lodge with each groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s picture next to them.

Helga the Horse and Morty the Moose

Get excited to meet Helga the Horse and Morty the Moose this summer as they help keep the Girl Scout Sisterhood alive at camp! One group will be presented with Helga or Morty at opening campfire. The group will be charged with doing an act of kindness for another group in camp. Once the act of kindness is completed, Helga or Morty will be left with that group so they can pass it on with another act of kindness.

Golden Dust Pan

Suitcases, backpacks, duffle bags â&#x20AC;&#x201C; oh my! Take everything you bring to camp, add in your friends who share the same living space, and before you know it you have a tent/cabin full of stuff everywhere! This year the Golden Dust Pan will travel daily to the group that has the cleanest living area as a whole! In addition to the cleanest living area, if you and your tent/cabin friends have your tent/cabin picked up, you will be left with a golden nugget of a treat each day regardless if your group received the Golden Dust Pan.

Snack Bins!

Camper Council also brings to you Snack Bins! Each group will have a bin of snacks for girls to pick from each morning. This way girls will always have snacks with them and can eat them whenever they are hungry throughout the day instead of waiting for a set snack time.

Spring Campout Girl/Adult, Troop, Families

O.W.L. – Rock Climbing Girl Only

Spring is here which means it is time to get out and explore the outdoors at camp with the Girl Scouts of Utah! Many of us are so busy and overscheduled that we don’t get a chance to relax and enjoy the natural world that surrounds us. Challenge yourself to take the weekend off and enjoy quality time exploring nature and reconnecting with other Girl Scouts and Girl Scout families as camp staff provides fun-filled camp activities for all.

On Belay? Belay On. Climbing? Climb On. Rock? ROCK ON! Spend the weekend learning all the basics of rock climbing from climbing techniques to belaying to learning about all the equipment that is needed to climb safely. We will start at the Salt Lake City office and then spend the weekend camping and rock climbing (location TBD). Girls will be transported to the rock climbing and camping site off Girl Scout property by camp staff that are approved drivers. Rock climbing activities are subject to weather conditions. Mt. Majestic Adventure Minicamp

Lightning Peak Adventure Minicamp

You’ve asked for it so here you go! Family camp is coming to Camp Cloud Rim this Labor Day weekend! Get excited! Spend the weekend coming together as a family as you take in the gorgeous area around you. Camp staff will provide programming options (such as waterfront, hikes, games, art, campfires, rock climbing, and so forth) throughout the day. They will also provide meals and cookout options for your family to enjoy. All Girl Scouts and their families are welcome to attend.

Hike to the top of Mt. Majestic, the mountain overlooking Camp Cloud Rim! This moderate hike is five miles round trip. On Wednesday we will learn about hiking safety, load our backpacks, and hit the trail. We will set up camp at the saddle and watch the sunset as we cook dinner. Thursday we’ll watch the sunrise from the summit of Mt. Majestic and spend the day exploring the area. Friday morning we’ll pack up our gear and head back down to Cloud Rim.

Hike to the top of Lightning Peak, the mountain overlooking Trefoil Ranch. This hike is about 14 miles round trip and can be moderate to strenuous. On Friday evening, we’ll learn about hiking safety and prepare trail snacks for the hike. Saturday morning, we’ll rise before the sun comes up to set out on our journey. We’ll watch the sunrise on the trail and be back to Trefoil Ranch just in time for dinner. Dinner will be served on Saturday evening before check-out.

Archery is a great sport for girls to build confidence and coordination. In this adventure minicamp, you will make a quiver to hold your arrows, design your own target, learn proper technique, play archery games and learn to score in a friendly competition of skill.

Want more time on the high ropes course at camp? Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got it! Spend the entire weekend climbing and traversing the ropes course while incorporating team-oriented challenges. By the end of the weekend you will have mastered the ropes course!

Wilderness Warriors – He and Me Minicamp Girl/Adult Do you have what it takes to be a Wilderness Warrior? If so, grab your favorite adult male and get ready for an epic weekend at Camp Cloud Rim! We will have a dinner cook-out, then spend the rest of the night learning about and making your own camouflage, learning about nocturnal animals, and playing night games. Wake up early for an optional polar bear dip or a sunshine hike to Mt. Majestic. Spend your day doing activities such as: geocaching, paddling on the lake, hiking, learning to build fires, and so much more! Art-A-Rama Minicamp Girl, Girl/Adult, Troop Spend the weekend enjoying the fall weather at Camp Cloud Rim while creating your own little masterpieces of art work! Learn how to capture the gorgeous fall-time scenery by painting it on canvas using acyclic paint. Create unique pieces of jewelry including a hair barrette, necklace, and bracelet. You will also have time to enjoy the paddling on the lake and hiking if you wish to do so. Projects will be different from last fall. Trefoil Ranch

Trefoil Ranch is located on 123 acres of beautiful ranch country tucked away in Provo Canyon. Trefoil Ranch has amazing facilities, including a lodge, ranch house, and bunk house, as well as showers, electricity, hot water, and flush toilets. Campers sleep in platform tents or cabins with staff located nearby. Trefoil Ranch is home to over 25 horses. Depending on the camp session, girls can enjoy horseback riding instruction, high and low ropes courses, archery, biking, hiking, and other camp activities. All riding program are subject to weather conditions.

Equestrian Program Levels

Girls who register for any of our equestrian programs will spend a total of 8 hours per week at the stables, unless otherwise noted. Lessons include riding instruction, stables maintenance (mucking stalls), and ground school (learning about the animals and tack and how to care for them). Horseback riding is a sport that requires physical coordination, balance, and the ability to follow directions. Our programs are described as Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels. Campers in any equestrian program will be grouped according to experience level and lessons will be geared towards the least experienced rider.

Intermediate programs are for girls that have previously attended a one-week ridER ing program at camp, or have had eight full MEDI hours of Western riding experience outside of camp. Girls in intermediate programs must be able to lead a horse comfortably, ride in an arena without a lead line, be able to control a horse during a walk or jog, ride without stirrups at a walk, and demonstrate correct reining position. Lessons may include: saddle club, lead, walk, jog, lope, arena drills, mount, dismount, turn, stop, trail, groom, and basic horse care.

Advanced programs are for girls that have previously attended more than one VA N C week-long riding program at camp, or have had 16 full hours of Western riding experience outside of camp. Girls in advanced riding programs must be able to mount and dismount without assistance, turn, stop, demonstrate ability to walk, jog, and lope a horse with control, ride without stirrups at a walk and jog, and demonstrate a secure balanced position. Lessons may include: saddle club, walk, jog, lope, arena drills, barrels and pole bending at a lope, low level jumping, trail, pack trip, showdeo, groom and horse care.

Beginning programs are for girls with little to no horseback riding experience. Lessons may include: lead, walk, jog, GINN mount, dismount, turn, stop, rein position, pasture trail ride, groom, and basic horse care.

Not Registering for a Horse Program but Want to Ride a Horse?

This summer we are excited to offer campers an opportunity to have a Horse Experience while they attend non-horse programs at Trefoil Ranch. For an additional fee of $35, girls can participate in a twohour Horse Experience where they visit the stables, learn about the horses, and go on a ride around the arena. Girls who choose to add a Horse Experience to their camp program will part from their group during one afternoon and head to the stables with designated camp staff.

Those sessions occurring over the July 4 and July 24 holidays will have special all-camp programming starting with a theme dinner followed by an evening of games and activities with the entire camp. This way girls can still experience the holidays – they’ll just have a camp twist to their celebration!

Camp Cloud Rim sits at an elevation of 9,200 feet near Park City, nestled in aspen and pine on the shores of Lake Brimhall. Camp Cloud Rim has beautiful facilities, including a national park-style lodge and shower house, as well as electricity, hot water, and flush toilets. Girls live in nearby cabins or platform tents with staff located nearby. Depending on the camp session, campers may participate in canoeing, sailing, kayaking, swimming, photography, pottery, rock climbing, hiking, and backpacking. All waterfront programs are subject to weather conditions.

Do you like to be active? This camp is for you! Rise early in the morning for a group walk/ run. No need for speed, these mornings are about seeing the awesome world around you! These walk/runs will prepare you for the 4th annual Trefoil Ranch 5K. You will totally need to cool off after all that hard work, so take a bike ride and cruise down the canyon to ride the rapids on the Provo River. How cool is that?! Photo-Sketch! 6th-12th Grade 1-Week Program

This trip is designed for beginner backpackers. Spend the first day at camp reviewing outdoor skills and learning how to pack your backpack. You will hit the trail on Tuesday morning and return Thursday night. Enjoy the magnificent views, cooking dinner, and looking up at the night sky. Be prepared for challenging hikes and rock solid friendships.

Learn to windsurf, check. Become a pro sailor, check. Perfect your rock climbing skills, check. If these are all things you want to check off your bucket list, this program is for you! Spend every day on the lake with waterfront staff as you learn and practice sailing and windsurfing in small groups.

Photography? Sketching? This week you choose which you want to learn more about – or better yet, do a little bit of both! Expose yourself to new photography challenges as you take film and digital pictures of your friends and nature. Develop your film in Cloud Rim’s dark room – it is a cool process you’ll want to learn!

Take time during the week to not only rock climb, but to also learn and practice how to belay your friends safely. Boats and Belay is sure to have you leaving camp feeling accomplished! Girls will be in separate groups based on grade levels. Girls will have options of where they’d like to focus their time with waterfront and rock climbing.

Learn about how to sketch different nature scenes with charcoal, oil pastels, or pencil. Watch your confidence develop as you create a personal art journal, collaborate with a team full of artists like you, and express yourself through daily artistic challenges. Have you been riding horses forever? Then this is your chance to shine as an experienced rider. In this camp adventure, you will spend at least 16 hours at the stables where you will learn advanced horse care and riding skills. Practice drills, go on trail rides, and participate in Saddle Club and a Showdeo. Take it to the extreme on an overnight pack trip. You’ll even have a chance to help the riding staff with a lesson for younger girls at the stables. In addition, you’ll have time for traditional camp activities like high ropes course, archery, and arts and crafts. Girl Scouts of Utah’s leadership programs offer you an opportunity to learn leadership skills that are needed to work with girls in the outdoors, specifically at camp. If you are highly motivated, ready to work and play hard, and are willing to accept a leadership role at camp, this is the program for you. You will explore the areas of camp craft skills, group dynamics, child development, program planning, camp operations, and the role of the camp counselor. The program includes time devoted to learning these skill sets, plus actual experience working with children under the supervision of camp staff. All programs will be based out of Camp Cloud Rim but you will have opportunities to do sections of your training at Trefoil Ranch (transportation to and from Trefoil Ranch will be provided). The CIT programs vary in duration from ten days to four weeks. We prefer that you are able to stay for the entire duration of your program, but are willing to work with you if you have religious or family obligations. Participation in the program does not guarantee employment at GSU camps in the future. The leadership program does have limited space in order to maintain the quality of the program for all of those participating. Registering for a leadership program does not guarantee a spot. For those new to the leadership program, you will be sent an email directing you to an online application form. We will be doing interviews for all C.I.T. programs on Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday, April 30 at the Salt Lake City Girl Scout office between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (you may call in if you don’t live in the area). If you did a Leadership Program last summer, you will not need to re-apply for the program – just register online.

This training will help prepare you to be a counselor and you’ll learn the specifics of waterfront, art, high adventure, ropes course, and horseback riding. You’ll spend the first week at Camp Cloud Rim polishing up on your skills and your second and third week in program areas such as: units, waterfront, stables, high adventure, ropes course, kitchen, and art. You’ll work with the Leadership Director to create a schedule that works for both you and camp. You’ll still have time on the weekends to be with your CIT team to share your experiences and to learn from one another. Your Leadership Director will check in with you daily to debrief your experiences and give you guidance as needed. Be prepared to work hard and to be fully immersed in the staff side of camp. Activity Scholarship Information

Activity Scholarships may be applied for after you have completed the initial registration and paid your $50 nonrefundable, non-transferable deposit. The Activity Scholarship form may be found online at www.gsutah.org/summer-camp or you can print page 38-39. The form can then be mailed to: Girl Scouts of Utah, Activity Scholarship, 445 East 4500 South, Suite 125, Salt Lake City, UT 84107 or emailed to: camp@ gsutah.org. All Activity Scholarship forms are due April 1. Scholarships awards will be applied to your camp balance no later than April 30.

Other Registration Information

• We will have computers available during business hours at each service center for your use if you don’t have access to internet at home or at your local library. All you need is your credit card to pay the $50 non-refundable, non-transferable deposit for your camper’s camp session. • Your camper may request one buddy online; however the system does not place them together – that is up to you! Be sure if your camper wants to go to camp with a buddy that you plan to get together and register for the same session! When registering, you will have an opportunity to list your camp buddy’s name. • If your camper is not a member of Girl Scouts she may still come to camp. You will just need to pay the nonmember price which is an additional $50. But wait! Wouldn’t it be better to register her online as a Girl Scout at www.gsutah.org (Login tab top right of page) for $15 and then register for camp? The remainder of the camp fee (excluding the deposit) will be refunded if: •G SU receives a written notification of the cancelation at least five weeks prior to the camp program. •T he camper leaves her camp program due to illness or injury and GSU receives a written request for a refund within two weeks after the camper returns home. The refund will be pro-rated on a per diem basis. •T he camper cannot attend her camp program because she becomes ill or injured and GSU receives a request for the refund in writing with a physician’s note within one week after the scheduled camp program. •G SU cancels the camp program and alternative programs were offered but you do not select one of the alternative programs.

You will receive an email notice immediately that your camper has been accepted (or waitlisted) for the camp program. Once the minimum number of registrations for a program occurs, you will receive a confirmation email which will include a link to the following forms. Summer Camp Orientation Guide

No refunds are given if a girl returns home during camp because of homesickness, misconduct, parent/guardian request, and/or any other circumstance.

The Summer Camp Orientation Guide is designed to help families prepare their child for summer camp. This guide book has information about: check-in and check-out day procedures, mail, meals, living arrangements, sample daily schedules, what a typical day at camp looks like, trading post, health services, medications, dietary needs, packing list, camp guidelines, showers, and so forth.
