Alexander, Blackburn Introduce Legislation to Protect the Tennessee Walking Horse Tradition Press Release Posted on May 14, 2019
LIZ’S KIDS HORSE SHOW
WASHINGTON, May 14, 2019 – United States Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) today introduced legislation to protect the Tennessee Walking Horse tradition.
The Lynchburg Walking Horse Show will return this year on Saturday, July 20, 2019 in the Moore County Arena. This show will benefit Liz Gassaway’s Kids; meaning all the children that have benefited from her guidance in equine events. She has been an instructor for Horse Play in Tullahoma and Great Strides in Shelbyville, as well as a special needs educator in Unionville, Tennessee. The Liz’s Kids Horse Show will affiliate with the SHOW HIO and will have both Flat Shod and Performance Riders’ Cup classes. There will be three championships; one for each division. If you would like to be a sponsor or helper, please contact Jerry Harris at jerry@whatahorse.com or 931-581-4411, Debbie Williams at 931-575-9704 or Marcia Allison at 931-639-2518. All proceeds will go to Liz’s Kids!
CANDID OF THE WEEK
“In baseball if a player illegally uses steroids you punish the player – you don’t shut down America’s pastime. We need to punish and stop any trainer, owner or rider who engages in the illegal practice of horse soring – not shut down a treasured and important tradition in both Tennessee and Kentucky. Just as there is zero tolerance in baseball, there should be zero tolerance in horse soring,” Alexander said. “This legislation is a proposal to end the contemptible, illegal practice of horse soring, while preserving the century-old Tennessee Walking Horse tradition. It would do that by improving the consistency of inspections and regulations and enhancing accountability.” “The Tennessee Walking Horse industry plays a vital role in our state’s agricultural economy,” said Senator Blackburn. “It is time to address the need for common-sense reform to stop the abuse of our beloved Walking Horses and to implement inspection and testing methods to eliminate these problems for good. The creation of a single Horse Industry Organization will establish consistency and improve accountability within the industry.” The Tennessee Walking Horse industry supports more than 20,000 jobs nationwide and pumps $3.2 billion into the nation’s economy. In 2018, there were more than 200 shows contributing millions of dollars to local economies. There are more than 260,000 walking horses registered nationwide, including over 58,000 walking horses in Tennessee, and more than 35,000 in Kentucky.
NOW HIRING... Jackie Whatley was all smiles following her debut blue ribbon performance with her new horse Rippin Stitches Dollar. She is joined by Jocelyn Laughlin who was proud to announce she was the “good luck charm”.

SPARTA, TN- Following a quick rain shower on the evening of May 18th, a perfect spring night occurred for a horse show. The White County Open Horse Show was held in Sparta, Tennessee at the White County Fairgrounds. The Honorable John Allen Callaway judged the event. This horse show was compiled of Walking Horses, Racking Horses and even mules. Whether you were a preschooler or a senior adult, this show offered a class for every age to enjoy. The show kicked off with the Country Pleasure Youth class. Three entries were showcased and riding out with the first blue ribbon of the night was Madelyn Gannon aboard Armed With Color. The Youth 17 & Under Mares & Geldings class was one of the largest of the night. Get Ready and Evan Claborn made a stellar performance and claimed the blue ribbon. The Walking Horse Championship class concluded the evening’s performances with two entries answering the gate call. Charlie Green directed Starting Lineman to top honors for owner Jimmy Sauls. Reserve award went to Jose’s Thunderstruck with Larry George in the irons for Beverly Sherman. The Scoop congratulates all of the White County Open winners. Beyond The Ring with Kelly Manis Peeler Nestled in the sand hills of Laurinburg, North Carolina is a farm where Kelly Peeler resides. The land is rich in family history as she has raised her family on the same land in which she was raised. Kelly is the daughter of Joe and Rena Manis. The upcoming generation consists of Kelly’s children, Kristian and Kaitlyn. Family is the heart of the farm and some well-spent family time often focuses around horses. It’s on this farm where they have enjoyed raising a few of their current show horses Chance Of Cash, Flames Of Cash and My Chance Of Cash. They not only own and exhibit Walking Horses, but also positively promote the breed in public. Kelly’s family has been a strong force in the North Carolina Walking Horse Association for years. When thinking about her first introduction to Walking Horses, Kelly fondly remembers her first ride on one. While camping one spring at Big Creek, Tennessee her Uncle Fred let her ride his Tennessee Walking Horse for the day. It was an immediate love of the smooth gait, which was quite different from her aged Appaloosa. As The Celebration arrived that same fall, Kelly’s father took her to the historic Wiser Farm horse auction to find a big black Tennessee Walking Horse mare. Before long, the auctioneer proclaimed “sold” and Kelly was the new owner of Collector’s Martini.

Celebrating this Easter with the family.
Beyond The Ring with Kelly Manis Peeler Fathers are so often instrumental in educating and preparing children with their hobbies. The relationship between Kelly and her father Joe is no exception. She credits her dad for her horse knowledge and riding experience. Trail riding every fall and spring in the Great Smoky Mountains gave her many opportunities for learning. Fast forwarding a few years has now let Grandpa Joe pass down the knowledge to his grandchildren. Kelly’s son Kristian enjoys helping out on the family farm. However, his interests at the moment are directed toward earning his Eagle Scout, and the only riding the 16 year old is focusing on is with four wheels. Carrying on the Walking Horse legacy is Kelly’s daughter, Kaitlyn. She has loved horses even before she could walk. Kaitlyn learned to ride on her mom’s retired show horse I’m Cash On Delivery. It wasn’t until last winter that Kaitlyn decided she wanted to give a padded horse a try. She called up trainer Tyler Baucom to see if he could help. Tyler let her ride Steely Dan and from that moment on, Kaitlyn loved the padded Tennessee Walking Horse.
Kristian on Scout Sunday
Kailtyn and Jimmy Johnson at the Clemson, SC show in 2018.
The Baucom Family is credited with influencing the Peelers in the show ring. Kelly loved Chad Baucom’s humbleness in and out of the ring. His kind demeanor was a character she appreciated while trying to become a better rider. His loss was great to Kelly and her family. But now, Tyler and Jeanette are sharing those same traits with Kaitlyn, as she is learning to become a more confident equestrian. Kailtyn Peeler with her pleasure horse and her grandfather Joe Manis. Beyond The Ring with Kelly Manis Peeler
While Baucom Stables currently trains their 2019 contenders Chance Of Cash, Flames Of Cash, GI Gen and Jimmy Johnson, Abee Stables trains My Chance Of Cash. Father Joe shows Chance Of Cash. Kelly shows Flames Of Cash and My Chance Of Cash, while Kaitlyn shows Jimmy Johnson in the 12-17 division. The family’s new horse is GI Gen. It was purchased for Joe to ride. But like most grandfathers do, he let Kaitlyn show her for the first time in the Youth Ponies class at the FAST Spring Classic. After Kaitlyn and GI Gen made an outstanding show and won a unanimous blue, I think it’s safe to say, the horse is now Kaitlyn’s. Page 80 / The Scoop
Beyond The Ring with Kelly Manis Peeler Kelly, Kaitlyn and Joe are all thrilled to be part of the Walking Horse industry. It has become a rich part of their family as they can make memories together while doing what they love- showing horses. It’s time well spent and an investment that has been very rewarding. As far as blue ribbons- they are just a bonus prize. Kelly’s first blue was on Mark Infinity at the Southern Championship in Georgia, and Kaitlyn’s was last spring at the NCWHLA Show on Jimmy Johnson. An exciting year lies ahead as they each have great contenders. They will continue their journey in the show ring striving for world championship honors, while along the way molding new friendships and creating memories that will last a lifetime. But as for Kelly and the present, she will basque in the blessings she has been given; a beautiful home, an incredible family, memories to treasure and of course her beloved horses.
