Repair values climb 51% in Northern Ireland Northern Ireland’s automotive trade can take advantage of a potential revenue opportunity as vehicles become increasingly complex, a study by Accident Exchange has shown. Its investigation showed the average cost to repair a car rose by a surprising 51% in just 12 months. Figures indicate that on average motorists paid £2,362 for repairs following an accident compared to £1,569 in 2014, with owners of ‘mainstream’ vehicles taking the largest financial hit to restore their cars’ condition. Car buyers today expect their vehicles to be laden with technology, however, they are significantly more costly to repair. Not only are materials more expensive but the repair methods are more complex and labour intensive, too. Classifying cars based on manufacturer, popular vehicles from mainstream brands commanded high repair values in the bodyshop. By 2015, the average cost of repairing a ‘mainstream’ vehicle was 54% higher than the previous year while prestige repairs on luxury brands jumped 44%.

IN BRIEF

Belfast Insurance Company take top UK award A

Belfast firm has beaten the giants of the car insurance industry to be named as the best car insurance provider in the UK. IAM Surety was voted the nation’s top car insurance company by the 60,000 readers of Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling motoring magazine. The magazine’s annual survey had already voted IAM Surety best value in the UK in 2012 and 2013, and a voter commented that they were

best for excellent service and value last year. IAM Surety is a brand of Cornmarket Insurance Services, formerly known as Adelaide Insurance Services until last year, when the company adopted their longstanding parent company’s name. As well as the overall award this year, Auto Express readers voted IAM Surety, which provides insurance for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, as tops for friendliness and helpfulness,

keeping customers informed and value for money. Managing Director Sam Geddis, who founded Cornmarket Insurance Services in 1991 and has seen the number of staff grow from 23 to 90 in the past eight years alone, said: “The difference between us and other companies is that we talk to our customers, and they talk to us,” said Sam. “We specialise in providing insurance services throughout the UK and Ireland

to nurses, teachers, trade unions, advanced and professional drivers and motorcyclists, and our customer groups are continuing to expand. “Each customer group has tailormade insurance products and are serviced by dedicated teams who have made this prestigious award possible.” Emily Lowe of Auto Express said: “It’s a fantastic result that should definitely be celebrated. Our readers hold IAM Surety in high regard.” ■

IM Group acquires Citroen Ireland

I

M Group, the UK-based automotive importer and distributor, has purchased Citroën Motors Ireland including the Airside retail operation in Dublin for an undisclosed sum, giving the Group the rights to import and sell Citroën and DS models throughout the Republic of Ireland. PSA Peugeot Citroën identified IM Group as being in the best position to support the future business objectives of the Citroën and DS brands, including a planned growth in registrations. Vehicles will continue to be sold through the existing Citroën/DS dealership network. The IM Group will bring more than 30 years’ experience in the Irish market through the successful import and distribution of Subaru and Great Wall brands, as well as considerable international expertise further afield in the UK, Nordic and Chinese markets. Chris Graham, former Group Dealer Development Manager for IM Group is appointed Managing Director to oversee the transition and establish the Irish operation as a separate company within the Group; he will report into Paul Tunnicliffe, Head of Franchises for IM Group’s UK and Ireland businesses. Under the terms of the acquisition, all employees at Citroën Motors Ireland will become employees of IM Group, and the standalone organisation will be operated separately from IM Group’s existing brands (Subaru and Great Wall). Andrew Edmiston, Managing Director, IM Group, commented: “This is an exciting opportunity, both for IM Group and Citroën and DS in Ireland. Citroën has a long and proud history in Ireland, and the range of current and future models will help drive both the Citroën and DS brands to even greater success in the coming years.” ■

MPs Unaware of Lack of Regulation in Vehicle Repair Sector

N

ew research commissioned by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) reveals that nearly one in five MPs believe all technicians in their local garage are qualified to work on today’s vehicles. But, according to the IMI, the reality is quite different, with no mandatory requirement for vehicle technicians to be qualified – or to ensure qualifications are kept up to date and in line with new vehicle technology. With separate IMI research revealing that 53% of drivers planning to buy or lease a new car in the next two years are considering an electric or hybrid vehicle, the IMI is urging government to tackle this issue in the interests of public safety – and to help rebuild motorists’ trust in the sector. ■

Bells of Crossgar receive top Renault award

B

ells of Crossgar is just one from a total of 20 Renault franchises across the UK to have earned the right to call themselves a ‘Dealer of Excellence’ after shining in the brand’s second annual customer care evaluation, conducted by global market research experts J.D. Power. The result shows a marked improvement on last year when seven Dealers of Excellence were announced and demonstrates that the Renault’s network of UK dealers is not only expanding, but also improving in quality. Focusing on the experience of new car servicing customers and unique in the European automotive industry, the independent J.D. Power review saw dealer performance measured in two ways – first a comprehensive customer satisfaction survey and then an extensive onsite audit for the top performing dealerships. The top performing dealerships were announced by Renault UK Managing Director, Ken Ramirez, who presented their Dealer of Excellence awards at a presentation ceremony in Millbrook recently. Congratulating the recipients, Renault UK’s Head of Network Quality and Training, Steve Whitcombe, said: “We launched the groundbreaking J.D. Power Dealers of Excellence programme last year as part of our commitment to improving quality and standards across the board and we are still unique in the industry in running an initiative of this kind. “The programme has really helped to focus the minds of our network on the importance of customer care and the customer experience and to drive real improvement.” ■

RAC goes from 0-45

dealers in Northern Ireland in just three months T

he RAC has signed up 45 dealers to its used car network in Northern Ireland in just three months, rapidly creating a strong presence in the country. This has been achieved since Colraine-based Tom Reid was appointed the RAC Dealer Network’s representative in the region. He explained that dealers were recognising both the strength of the RAC brand name and the way in which working with the RAC allowed them to build a complete customer proposition to support used car sales. Tom said: “Signing 45 dealers so quickly is very pleasing but we are sure that we will see many more join the network over the coming months. “As in the rest of the UK, Northern Ireland dealers are becoming more and more aware that simply putting a warranty on a used car is not enough. Customers are looking for a complete support package that allows them to feel a high level of confidence in their purchase. “Working with the RAC allows them to do just this – creating a proposition including elements such as breakdown recovery, vehicle inspections, provenance checks and more. “Also, the strength of the RAC brand is strong in the mind of used car buyers and creates a high level of confidence. They know that the RAC will only put their name to a quality product and work with reputable dealers.” ■

Liz Fisher, Sales Director at Accident Exchange commented: “As increasingly complex vehicles become more expensive to repair, credit repair work flow is a key source of revenue that bodyshops and dealerships can take advantage of. “Offering an accident management service is an effective way to control the cost to the motorist and insurers while keeping this work

Accident Exchange works with dealers and bodyshops across Northern Ireland to provide a full accident management service to help customers get back on the road as quickly as possible following an accident. Specialising in prestige brands, Accident Exchange will provide any non-fault driver with a comparable vehicle following an accident whilst referring the damaged vehicle to an approved bodyshop, securing customer loyalty and revenue. ■ garageTRADER - 7

lobal Oils Ltd and Magic Bullet fuel treatments continues to cater for the home automotive sector, from family cars to agricultural

machinery, high performance race cars and motorcycles, servicing the local industry while developing international markets abroad. Stanley Watson, the energetic managing director of Lisburn company Global Oils Ltd which manufactures and distributes automotive lubricants and coolants, has pulled off several export deals with a number of leading international companies to distribute the Magic Bullet and Global Oil lubricants brand, both in Poland, the Czech Republic and in the US. While Global Oils home business has been steady over the years Stanley says, ‘I hope our home business can continue to grow with the support of the local automotive sector, through our authorised distributors offering full technical support and advice. We believe we are in a good position to do so as we produce over 300 product lines

from lubricants to antifreeze, winter products and fuel treatments.’ Stanley’s success hasn’t happened overnight as he has been in the oil business for 30 years, launching the Global Oils brand 22 years ago. He was involved with motor sport and bike racing for many years and his association with oil came about through his sponsor promoting lubricants in motor racing back then. Global Oils has grown substantially since, with a 25,000sq ft facility in Lisburn’s Knockmore Industrial Park with eight filling lines, and a 7,000sq ft blending and formulation area which enables him to contractfill for quite a few UK and Ireland companies which market own label products. Moving forward But Stanley has global ambitions and is not a man who is afraid to strike out on his own. Just after

we meet he is off to Las Vegas to the gigantic SEMA aftermarket trade show, exhibiting his specialist products for the third year in a row, the only company from Ireland exhibiting, and one of only three from the UK. That significant investment paid off three years ago when he signed a distributorship with an American company which now has a base near Las Vegas to serve Los Angeles and the growing markets of the south west US states. ‘We’ve had a steady start there,’ he said, ‘but it’s a hard market – Americans know their lubricant sector – but 2016 will be stronger with our strategy to move into these Californian growth areas. We are a quality-based company with competitive prices, and we believe our products can satisfy the requirements of new and present customers, either at home or abroad.’ ■

Innovation the key to Schaeffler’s success S

chaeffler Automotive Aftermarket (UK) Ltd is celebrating winning two awards at the Auto Trade Expo in Dublin. The company received the Auto Trade Expo Award for Innovation for its ground-breaking intelligent water-pump modules and also picked up a best stand award at Auto Trade EXPO/ The pumping capacity of conventional water pumps used in vehicles today often depends solely on engine speeds. A high engine speed results in a higher coolant flow-rate, a low engine speed means flowrates are less. But the intelligent Ruville waterpump modules make it possible to precisely regulate coolant temperature within the entire cooling circuit or even to completely shut off temperature regulation if required. A diverse number of coolant circuits can be variably controlled according to specific engine requirements – which contribute significantly to lowering friction loss, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. ■

FAI

AFTERMARKET What goes around comes around

M

any of you will remember the days when all popular engines were timed using chains and then in the late 60’s GM came out with the revolutionary timing belt; it was quieter and easier to fit than a timing chain. Hence forth most manufacturers followed their lead and the use of timing chains was left with just a few manufacturers including BMW & Mercedes. However, we are seeing a resurgence of the timing chain being used on many popular vehicles. These new generation chains are a far cry from the chains used back in the last century. They are far longer, much lighter being made from modern steel alloys and quieter. In addition they can withstand greater forces and operate with less friction being contained within the engines oil filled atmosphere. And it is for

14 - garageTRADER

these reasons that many OE’s have reverted back to using timing chains as a “fit for life” product instead of belts that need replacing at set times/mileages. Due to the high demand in the aftermarket FAI launched a Timing Chain Kit (TCK) program in 2010 with 25 part numbers, the range is now over 319 part numbers. Covering many popular European, Japanese and Korean brands. Each FAI kit contains all the timing components including variable valve timing (VVT) hubs when applicable along with the bolts, oil seals, gaskets, RTV silicon and where needed oil spray pipes to enable the mechanic to complete the installation. Despite the OEM ‘s aspirational “fit for life” statement, most garages now replace TCK’s on a weekly basis. Which brings in good business

as a TCK requires more labour to fit than a comparable timing belt replacement. Most replacements are due to chain wear; this is usually attributed to an oil issue. Our lab tests of oil from failed engines have shown the wrong grade/specification or poor maintenance creating contaminants (carbon, metal particles, water etc) being suspended within the oil. These foreign bodies are carried around the engine and in the case of the TCK cause premature wear of the chain and sprockets, plus the debris blocks the feed holes into the tensioner(s) and VVT hubs which eventually starves the tensioner and VVT of oil rendering it useless. This means that it is imperative that when any TCK is installed, utmost care must be taken to ensure the sump, oil galleries and oil pump are clean and undamaged and new oil and filter

is fitted. To help with this there is an installation video on the FAI web site http://faiauto.com/video-library/ In addition to leaflets showing best practice and technical help in each kit. FAI add an Oil Warning label, which tells the installer what oil of grade is needed for their engine, this information must be passed on to the owner to ensure they continue to use the correct oil, if they replenish with the wrong grade or cheaper oil they could be looking at a very expensive repair. FAI includes two self-adhesive labels in each kit to show the date of installation and the grade of oil used by the installer. These should be stuck to the log book and on the bonnet slam panel to remind the owner of the grade needed. Remember engines are expensive compared to oil…! ■

MANBAT

Proactively Take The Lead Says Manbat W

hen it comes to changing technology, workshops are at the frontline, not only when carrying out service and repair work, but also when having to deal with the motorist. It is therefore important that they periodically take a step back and consider the best approach to tackle change. This is where proactive wholesalers can make a difference as they have both the supplier relationships and the wider perspective that can help workshops to take decisions that make a positive difference to their businesses. For many years, national battery distributor Manbat has been actively encouraging wholesalers to support their customers in this way and by highlighting areas where they can make a difference. Two current examples exist in the shape of AGM/ EFB batteries and battery testing.

AGM/EFB Batteries Sales patterns confirm that the move from familiar high output capacity

18 - garageTRADER

lead-acid batteries in traditional vehicle applications, to specialist cyclic batteries fitted to vehicles with a Start-Stop function has begun. This means that more than ever, workshops need to be prepared to cater for the challenges that the batteries in these vehicles present. However, with some assistance from their supplier, the opportunities far outweigh these challenges. Over the last 25 years, profits from battery sales have fallen, so that a typical battery is now around the same price it was in 1990 and the labour rate a workshop can now charge to change a traditional battery is zero!

With the technology change however, three factors now begin to work in the trade’s favour: The AGM/EFB batteries required for Start-Stop vehicles command a higher price, which means more of

MANBAT

a margin for both wholesalers and their workshop customers. Workshops can now charge for fitting the replacement because in contrast to a traditional system, this process can sometimes take a couple of hours work. As the average motorist becomes less knowledgeable from a maintenance and repair perspective, they are less likely to call into question a fitting charge as they have no previous DIY experience on which to base their objection. As a result, workshops and wholesalers together have a real opportunity to use the changing landscape to their advantage and increase their profits.

Battery Validation As technicians will be aware, the battery in a micro-hybrid vehicle (one fitted with a Start-Stop function) is central to its electrical systems and is therefore constantly governed by a battery management module, which monitors its voltage, current, temperature and operating time. This information is processed to determine the battery’s state of charge, starting capacity, electrical consumption, energy reserve and optimum charging voltage, to ensure the system applies the correct charging regime and keeps it in the best possible condition. Fitting the battery for which the system was designed is therefore crucial, but so also is the process of

check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk

‘validation’ to ensure the battery and battery management module are diagnostically ‘connected’ and able to communicate with one another correctly. Failure to validate the battery can cause issues with the Start-Stop functionality, shutdown of non-essential electrical systems and even the premature failure of the battery. Although technicians already have a host of workshop tools at their disposal, the Manbat ‘Connect + Reset’® battery validation tool provides them with a simple, effective and inexpensive way to allow them to install a Start-Stop battery with confidence. It is also worth stating that even some vehicles without a Start-Stop function require battery validation when fitting a replacement and here too the ‘Connect + Reset’ tool provides the solution.

Battery Testing Motorists are looking for workshops that provide a good service and that they can trust. Battery testing is an easy and effective way of building customer confidence and is very easy to introduce. Whether a vehicle is in the workshop

for a service, MOT or repair, it should be automatic that technicians test the condition of its battery.

This is a win-win service because: If the battery is in poor condition, there is the immediate opportunity for a sale. If it is okay, but might need replacing in the next few months, the garage is providing their customer with helpful timely piece of ‘free’ advice. If however, the battery is in excellent condition, it’s a good news story that will boost the customer’s confidence that it is a garage they can trust and they’ll be sure to come back when a new battery is required. Wholesalers can help workshops to maximise these opportunities in two practical ways, first by helping them to coherently explain the facts to motorists and second, by supplying them with the tools they need to fit the batteries and carry out the battery testing. LIGHTING

OSRAM

Better visibility in poor weather with light from Osram New coloured styling lights add to the LEDriving fog light range

I

n difficult weather conditions such as rain, fog, and snow, Osram’s LEDriving fog light family helps improve visibility for drivers. The LEDriving FOG PL is the new addition, adding a touch of colour to match the car or give a highlight. The relaunch of the overall range means the Osram LEDriving fog family fits a wider variety of vehicles, all giving an even, bright white light (6000K), and road legal with ECE certification. The LEDriving fog lights can be

used as replacements for a large number of conventional round halogen fog lights with a diameter of 90 millimetres. Drivers can quite easily upgrade to more powerful LED technology. For Volkswagen, Nissan, Infiniti and Toyota cars there are additional mounting brackets available for all fog light types. The lights are compatible with hybrid cars and vehicles with automatic stop-start technology. The wide beam angle ensures a large field of vision so drivers can identify hazards earlier and see better in poor weather conditions

New LEDriving FOG PL: five colours to match the car With LEDriving FOG PL, Osram is for the first time offering a combined daytime running light (DRL) and fog light which will enhance the styling of the car, even when the lights are

not in use. There is a choice of five colours available for creating an individual look: Silver, Gold, Blue, Pink or Orange – either to match the car finish or provide a neat contrast. The use of colour emphasises the round design in the form of an eagle’s eye, giving the car an unmistakable appearance. With a Xenon like projector lens, the LEDriving FOG PL emits a powerful bright white light. Thanks to the LED technology, it has a low energy consumption, making it an economic winner compared to conventional higher voltage fog lights. LEDriving FOG PL is easy to install and suitable for 12V systems. Available from Osram Approved Partners at an RRP of £189.99 incl. VAT.

DAYCO

Don’t Put A Damper On Profits, Warns Dayco

D

ayco is keen to drawn attention to the opportunities that are made possible from the service of the front-end auxiliary drive (FEAD) system, particularly as many unfortunately still consider this as the preserve of the franchised dealer, which means there is true business development potential for the independent aftermarket. The auxiliary belt in the modern vehicle comes under considerable load as it is required to drive numerous additional components such as power steering pump and air conditioning compressor, alongside the familiar alternator and water pump duo. As a result Dayco recommended best practice is to replace the auxiliary belt in line with the timing belt replacement schedule, as both components will cover the identical mileage. In this way, FEAD related business can be driven through timing belt kit sales. The company also recommend that the other components in the 28 - garageTRADER

FEAD system are rigorously checked at the same time and should any wear be detected in the tensioner, idler or crankshaft pulley, these too must be replaced to ensure a full and thorough system repair.

"

As engines are becoming lighter and more compact, effective vibration damping is becoming ever more important to ensure the vehicle manufacturer’s required engine life, as well as for the comfort of the

vehicle’s occupants. Among the components in the FEAD system, one of the most important is the crankshaft pulley, which in these vehicles is referred to as a torsional vibration damper (TVD) and is designed with rubber internal components, capable of absorbing and damping the crankshaft vibrations, preventing them from reaching other parts of the system. TVDs and tensioners perform a highly important function for the correct and efficient operation of the power transmission system. This function is reflected in the structural complexity of each of these components, the design and manufacture of which require significant commitment in terms of technical knowledge and research investment. As well as being the world’s largest original equipment (OE) timing belt manufacturer, Dayco is a global leader in the research, design and manufacture of all related power transmission components, including

tensioners and TVDs. Further, Dayco is one of the major four OE TVD suppliers in Europe and the only company to also supply direct into the aftermarket. Its current range consists of more than 190 part numbers, which cater for the vast majority of vehicle applications. Besides the ‘traditional’ TVD, Dayco also manufactures a more complex version called the double damping system (DDS) TVD, which is designed and fitted to more powerful and efficient units such as the Fiat Multijet 1.9/2.0 series

of engines. These latest generation diesels are extremely efficient, but require a DDS TVD to operate effectively. As can be imagined, TVD manufacture presents a number of

significant technological difficulties from the requirement to join and “merge” rubber and metal components, to the formulation of specific compounds capable of reacting immediately to the intense vibrations transmitted through the system by these types of engines (see cutaway images). All Dayco components however, whether destined for OE or aftermarket, are manufactured to the same exacting standards, so motor factors supplying and workshops fitting Dayco can be assured of OE quality and pedigree across the range. So don’t neglect the FEAD system as it’ll only dampen profits. MAHLE

Is It Really The Turbocharger? G

enerally, turbocharger damage is caused by the engine’s peripheral components, rather than the turbocharger itself. Therefore, if the turbocharger is replaced and the actual cause of failure is not remedied, it will inevitably be damaged again. Unfortunately, it is often only when the turbocharger is replaced and the symptoms remain, that a thorough investigation is undertaken, which is why it is advisable to identify the actual cause of damage for every failure.

SUSPICIOUS NOISES When whistling noises occur immediately after installation, it is often hastily concluded that a crack in the turbocharger or a manufacturing defect is the cause. However, examination usually reveals something else: A gasket inserted the wrong way around (figure 1). This reduces the diameter and therefore also the flow rate, which can lead to whistling noises and/or a decrease in performance. Incorrect fit of the hoses/components of the charge air line. This can cause air to escape and as a result, the whistling. The housing mounted incorrectly. On certain types of turbochargers, the compressor housing is adjusted via the mounting screws. If the screws are not tightened correctly, they can become loose during engine operation, which can cause audible scratching or whistling as the impeller strikes the housing. Metallic rattling or clanging can indicate a detached piece of metal in the exhaust manifold, which must be rectified immediately to avoid major turbocharger and consequential engine damage.

BLOCKAGES Smoke emissions and loss of oil are among the most common reasons for an unnecessary turbocharger replacement, which is why some background knowledge is invaluable. Almost all series turbochargers have hydrodynamic bearings, where the oil acts to ‘separate’ the moving parts. An adequate supply and the correct removal of oil are therefore essential for the durability and operation of the turbocharger. If the oil supply is hindered or the oil pressure is too low, an adequate lubricating film cannot form and wear occurs between the shaft and the bushing (Fig. 2) resulting in turbocharger damage. Clear indications for inadequate lubrication include a loose nut on the impeller, a broken shaft (Fig. 3), or discolouration due to high temperatures. If the defect is not remedied prior to the installation of a new turbocharger, then the replacement will also fail. A blocked return line or excessive crankcase pressure can clog the oil return (Fig. 4) so oil can no longer flow out into the oil sump after lubricating the bearings and so accumulates in the bearing housing. Fresh oil pumped to the bearing points must then somehow flow out of the bearing, but as the flow is blocked it finds another path and despite the sealing piston rings, it is forced into the compressor and turbine side, where it is carbonised or is burnt in the combustion chambers via the intake air and the exhaust system via the turbine.

POOR PERFORMANCE The turbocharger can also be blamed for poor performance. However, more likely culprits include: The exhaust gas system - The exhaust gas after treatment 30 - garageTRADER

and recirculation systems create many contact points where throughput can be reduced. If the gases cannot flow freely, similar symptoms to a turbocharger fault can occur. The recirculation air valve - Cases of pronounced turbo lag or over-speeding could also be put down to a faulty turbocharger, when replacing the valve will solve the matter. The air mass flow meter - The flow meter determines the volume of air flowing into the engine. The engine control unit thus calculates the optimal quantity of fuel and additional values for the air-fuel ratio. Incorrect measurement can lead to poor performance and even to dry running, symptoms that could also indicate a defective turbocharger. However, measurement of the air flow meter values will help to identify the actual cause. Cracks in the air-guiding area - These can lead to unfiltered air entering into the system within specific speed ranges. The result is an inadequate air-fuel ratio, along with a noticeable lack of performance and gradual wear of all mechanical parts. A leak detection spray is recommended for quick identification of the leak points. AKZONOBEL

AkzoNobel brings ‘Synergy’ to its Vehicle Refinishes business in Ireland A

kzoNobel is stepping up its support to the vehicle refinishes market in Ireland with the creation of an independently owned distribution partner dedicated to the Irish market. Synergy Vehicle Refinishing Solutions Ireland Ltd (Synergy VRSI) retains the global strength and support of AkzoNobel, but, as an independent company, it will be able to respond to changing local needs more quickly and flexibly. From 30 November 2015, Synergy VRSI will become the sole importer and distributor in the Republic of Ireland of all of AkzoNobel’s vehicle refinish paint brands including Sikkens, Lesonal and Dynacoat as well as Sikkens Autocoat BT and Masons products. AkzoNobel has a clear strategy to grow market share in Ireland with a focus on the needs of the local customer. This strategy has led to the appointment of Synergy with Peter Daly in the lead of the new operation.

Currently Managing Director of AkzoNobel Ireland, Peter and his team will bring unrivalled experience and knowledge of the local marketplace. Body preparation techniques from Cromax C

romax understands that to deliver a quality repair, correct body preparation is a key part of the process, together with using the right products and applying them with expertise. As basic as it sounds, it is absolutely vital for refinishers to

34 - garageTRADER

know which substrate they are dealing with, such as composite or galvanised steel. For instance, to sand bare aluminium, refinishers should use a fine grade of abrasive to avoid creating deep scratches or generating too much heat, which can distort thinner sections

of the panel. It is also important to remember that if the substrate is galvanic, corrosion can occur by cross-contaminating aluminium with steel. This is completely avoidable in a dust- and dirt-free environment, and by using designated tools. An important aspect of body preparation is full and careful degreasing and appropriate cleaning of the panel before starting the refinishing stage. Refinishers can use 3608S Prepclean, which eliminates non-water-soluble contaminant, such as wax, polish, tar, silicon and grease, from old finishes. This should then be followed by 3910WB Waterborne Prepclean, which removes all water-soluble contaminants. Cleaning the vehicle at this stage allows the refinishers to make an accurate assessment of the damage, and also makes refinishing easier and less prone to contamination. Refinishers need to demonstrate exceptional hygiene at this point otherwise this can affect the final finish. By regularly changing gloves, and having separate overalls

for preparation and for painting, refinishers can achieve a better end-result. Once the vehicle is at the priming stage refinishers should again use a preparatory cleaner, like 3910WB Prepclean, to eliminate any contaminant that may have settled on the repair area. They should also use a clean tack cloth over the prepared area so that a clean surface is obtained before the application of subsequent undercoats. 3911WB Final Clean should then be used for the next degreasing steps in the repair process.

Use an etch primer Many refinishers do not use an etch primer in the refinishing process. This can be a critical error as the etch primer plays a very important role, giving the best possible adhesion between the substrate and the subsequent layer. For example a 2K primer renders the paint layer impermeable to moisture preventing micro blistering at a later date. ■

Everyone who has worked with the new compound, bodyshop operatives and paint company technicians alike, are loving the speed of cut and exceptional finish offered by G3 Premium. “We do have a fine finishing compound in the new range we are launching, but G3 Premium is so good that you virtually never need it”, said Farécla’s Wayne Walker. “I have personally witnessed a triallist with no special training on the product use G3 Premium to polish a black Mercedes bonnet from P1500 DA sanded to a genuinely flawless finish! It’s really impressed me, and it’s that easy to use that I’m sure my customers will feel the same way

when the launch goes live.” The high performance cut and gloss extends all the way up to the very latest energy or ‘hyper’ clearcoats. Applications Technician, Mark Taylor said: “Paint companies among the triallists are especially pleased with the new product as it performs really well on the next generation clearcoats they are developing. For our bodyshop customers that means G3 Premium is future-proofed, but it’s just as good on HS and MS paints as on the latest very hard systems, so it really is versatile.” Farécla’s Technical Director, Dave Pells explained: “We have taken a radically different approach to the abrasive technology in this formulation and it’s paying dividends. The one-step nature of this product combined with its ease of use will be a real boon for bodyshops.” A limited number of free trial samples of G3 Premium Abrasive Compound are available from the Farécla sales team and UK sales office 01920 465041. ■

Rebecca Wilson Achieves Bronze at World Skills Sao Paulo 2015 T

his was an absolutely fantastic result for Rebecca Wilson from CM Accident Repair in Co Down, a former apprentice with Riverpark Training who achieved Bronze at World Skills. This now makes a total of 5 World Skills medals achieved at the Mallusk Training Centre in Auto Body Repair and Car Painting. Rebecca is delighted with her achievement and here she is pictured with the Norwegian Silver Medallist (Frida Gustavsson) and the Chinese Gold Medal Winner (Jinlon Yang).

Rebecca competed in Sao Paulo for 3 days in August 2015. There were 20 competitors in total from all over the world, all of them the best in their nation. Rebecca kept in contact with Jonathan Lloyd (former Bronze Medallist), by text messaging when she had down time in the evenings and this provided additional support. Competition at this level is very intense and the difference between gold and bronze was only 12 marks out of a total of 550.

ATA and VDA Up-Date (High Importance) Riverpark Training are currently gathering training requirements for all ATA Assessed Outcome Modules requirements for technicians for 2016, if you or your staff require these assessments to maintain your ATA please ensure this does not lapse or a full ATA will have to be re-taken. This also applies to Windscreen ATA and Vehicle Damage Assessors. For those Senior Panel ATA this means that the IMI009 welding test is also required prior to taking the Assessed Outcome Modules. We are currently working with the Windscreen Academy and Thatcham to bring this assessment process to Riverpark Training in early 2016 but we need confirmation of delegates to minimise costs to the industry. To register training and assessment requests for all ATA and VDA please email janet@riverparktraining.com or patricia@riverparktraining.com Our intention is to fully support the industry in 2016 and minimise disruption to your workforce and production therefore advanced booking is required. In this edition we talk to

Trevor Doyle

Sales Executive , 3M UK Plc

Tell us about your career so far? I started working in J C Lamb, a motor factor in Belfast, then I joined 3M in August 1978 and have been with them since. I have started pre-retirement which allows me to work 4 days a week until April 2017. Then it’s feet up time.

Did you plan to get involved in this industry? I have always worked in this industry, never considered moving to another, so yes.

What was your biggest disappointment? Thankfully I haven’t had any major disappointments, if you learn from disappointments then you are more prepared for anything this industry throws at you.

What was the best piece of advice you ever received? Be honest with your customers, if you promise to do anything for them then do it and keep smiling.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? Paperwork, I hate doing it. Unfortunately it is now a big part of my job. 38 - garageTRADER

The team from 3M at the recent ABP Club trade show at the Europa Hotel: 3Ms Caroline Flynn and Simon Crump with Trevor Doyle.

Whom do you most admire? My mum. My dad died when I was very young and my mum had to raise four children on her own. It wasn’t easy. Also my wife for putting up with all the long hours working and doing that dreaded paperwork.

What is your most effective or personal asset? Relationships. After 37 years there are not too many customers I don’t get on with.

You’ve won the lottery. What car would you rush out and buy?

A Jaguar XJ. I have done the ‘boy racer’ phase and am looking more for comfort with maybe just a little speed.

How do you relax? When I have time I enjoy walking, playing golf, reading and trying to keep up with my four grandchildren.

Tell us something surprising about yourself… I ran the first Belfast marathon back in 1978 completing it in about 3½ hours. ■ check out the website: www.garagetrader.co.uk
