July is jam-packed with a Marvel spin-o , horror, murder mystery and take on an Arthurian legend.
Oh no, it’s July in Oklahoma! at means it is currently ten billion degrees outside all the time, so it makes sense to hide out in an air-conditioned theater, right? Luckily, this month is packed with some exciting picks from multiple genres.
First up, the Marvel lm Black Widow gets its long overdue release. e beginning of Phase Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie takes place several spots back in the timeline, following Captain America: Civil War. is one welcomes back Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romano in the character’s rst solo outing. e plot centers on Romano dealing with her past and coming into contact with her quasi-family members, played by Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz. e trailer has all the hallmark Marvel action set pieces: explosions, ghts and occasional attempts at humor. After multiple delays, it releases on July 9.
Next up, a new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, titled Old. e lm follows a family on a vacation at a secluded beach. ey quickly discover that being there appears to be making them all age ... very rapidly. e trailer has some bizarre looking moments of confusion as children change to adults and someone becomes pregnant seemingly in seconds. Shyamalan has a checkered past when it comes to his last decade of lm outings, but this one could shape up to be genuinely gripping, as long as the inevitable twist isn’t something unintentionally comedic. It releases July 23.
Another lm with Oklahoma roots plays this month. Titled Stillwater, the crime drama stars Matt Damon as Bill Baker, an oil-rig roughneck who travels to Marseille to visit his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin). ere, he helps exonerate her for a murder she claims she did not commit. Shot on location in both Oklahoma and France, the story should have a strong family element and a mystery to unravel. Directed by Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), the lm releases July 30.
Lastly, and the one I am most excited for, July goes hard and ends the month with e Green Knight. Based on the Arthurian legend, the lm will tell the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) and his headstrong notion to seek out the titular Green Knight, a massive, imposing, green-skinned outsider. With a supporting cast including Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris and Kate Dickey, the lm is quickly shaping up to be one of my favorites of the year. Distributed by A24, who released lms like Uncut Gems, e Lighthouse and Midsommar, the studio is known for taking chances on interesting and unique standalone stories in an unfortunately sequel and reboot heavy system. I can’t wait to be taken somewhere new and exciting when it releases on July 30. DREW JOSEPH ALLEN

NATALIE SHIRLEY
Selected as the president and CEO of OKC’s National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 2017, Natalie Shirley is the rst female leader in the museum’s history. Before taking the helm, Shirley served as president of Oklahoma State University’s OKC location, and as Gov. Mary Fallin’s Secretary of Education and Workforce Development. She was also in Gov. Brad Henry’s cabinet as the Secretary of Commerce and Tourism.
She now serves on several boards, including the Oklahoma City Chamber and United Way, and was appointed by Gov. Kevin Stitt to the University of Oklahoma’s Board of Regents. An Oklahoma native, Shirley received her Bachelor of Arts from OSU and her law degree from OU. Shirley lives in Oklahoma City and has six children. We caught up with Shirley and got her thoughts on ...

... an ideal day on the job.
A great day would see a balance among internal meetings, external meetings and visiting the exhibits and talking to museum patrons. at day never arrives, but hope springs eternal! e thing I look forward to every day is the opportunity to talk with our frontline team, volunteers and guests. Reviewing nancial statements or accreditation documents are important, but interacting with people is my favorite part of the day.
... being dubbed ‘the first.’
Being the rst female anything doesn’t hold any particular cache for me; being the best at whatever I get to do is what is important to me.
... what drew her to the museum.
What I am privileged to do in this job, and in every job I have served since moving back to Oklahoma, is to lift it up to the position it deserves. Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, an enterprise can struggle a bit. I get to come in, dust it o , nd the best people (internal and sometimes external) to ll the jobs, and then provide a vision, so the light can shine through.
...her love for Oklahoma.
I am passionate about Oklahoma and its people. My parents were Oklahomans and they instilled a love for its people in me. Oklahoma often seems to be at the bottom of all the good lists and near the top of the bad lists. All of us have a role in changing things for the better, and I am determined to do my part.

... days off .
You can nd me on a run, in my garden, with my heartthrob husband, Bill, or one of my six children. I am a total lawn and garden snob, and so early in the morning, late in the evening or that rare weekend day, you can nd me pulling weeds, planting owers or right now, picking strawberries.
... feeling grateful.
I have never worked a day in my life, no matter who signs my paycheck. I have gotten to work with some of the most amazing people in the world and participate in some of the most incredible projects right here in Oklahoma.
