D

oes this sound familiar? If it does, you could be in the grip of a mid-life job crisis. It’s quite a common event, and it tends to creep up on most people unnoticed. It’s almost as if you’re so busy doing the job you’re employed to do, you don’t have the time to recognise the point at which you don’t enjoy doing it anymore. It’s become a habit – and one that isn’t very good for you. So how do you solve this problem? First of all, you need to decide whether it’s the actual job you no longer enjoy, or the company you work for. Consider what other roles you could take on within the company. Do any of them inspire you? If they do, look to see what vacancies are available. The old saying that a change is as good as a rest holds true, and there is also the possibility of requesting a temporary change of scene. Maybe you could be seconded to another department

for a month or two? Many companies do this quite regularly, as it’s a good way to gain additional knowledge, without having to take on a job that you may not like. It gives you the opportunity to try something new, without the risk of leaving your old job behind permanently. If you feel that a complete change of company is in order, then you will need to decide whether to start looking at vacancies in similar companies, or whether to look for something completely new. If it’s a new direction you’re after, think about any aspects of your job you do still enjoy. Think about what you’re good at, and try and match your skills and knowledge up with existing vacancies elsewhere. You may find you will need to do some extracurricular training towards a new profession. If this is the case, your best bet is to fit this in around your current job, so that you can learn your new skills before leaving the security of

employment to practise them. Most of us spend around forty hours a week at our job, so it pays to make sure it’s something we enjoy. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and harder to get out of one, but the effort you need to put in to get yourself out of it will be worth it in the long run. u

First of all, you need to decide whether it’s the actual job you no longer enjoy, or the company you work for.

6 Reasons you

FAILED Your Last Job Interview

When you failed your last job interview, your friends and family might have told you not to worry; as someone else was probably already lined up for the job and you didn’t stand a chance. Alternatively, they might have told you that it wasn’t meant to be, and that a better job would come along. The only problem is that their well-meant words won’t have helped you. Other jobs don’t just ‘come along,’ and chances are, there wasn’t anyone else waiting in the wings to take up the position you applied for. The blunt truth is that another candidate for the job was considered a superior bet...

JOBS RESOURCES Taking on a new employee is always a gamble, but if people don’t make the grade during job interviews, they are bound to fail. The reasons you failed to gain employment might be listed below.

You were late Of course, it wasn’t your fault that your car ran out of petrol, you were in a monster traffic jam, or you had to drop your little sister at her ballet class before you arrived at the interview. All of these excuses are valid. However, they will have provided the interviewer with evidence that you were probably a bad bet. Punctuality is necessary in most jobs, and slovenly timekeeping could be sign of laziness.

You looked a mess How could you help it if the wind messed up your hair and the rain made your mascara run? You’re not in charge of the weather. Likewise, if a button dropped off your shirt on the journey to the interview, or you suddenly realized too late that you hadn’t ironed your suit properly, you aren’t to blame. These things happen. There again, if the other candidates for the job turned up for their interviews looking smart, but you

walked in looking like something a cat left on the mat, no wonder you weren’t hired.

You smelled like garlic and body odor Okay, so your mom cooked you a lovely dinner full of garlic last night, and you forgot to use a deodorant. These problems could happen to anyone, only they don’t; they happen to you. No one wants to work alongside someone who smells bad, let alone leave him or her in the company of clients.

You sat there like a wet blanket Whether you were shy or unprepared, and this is what made you sit silently through the interview without showing enthusiasm, it doesn’t matter. Not showing signs of life and interest in the position at hand will have made you look bad. The person who got the job probably sparkled with life and passion, or at least made good job of giving the impression that they did.

You were negative The interviewer may have asked you an awkward question that was designed to test your metal. Instead of listing your bad qualities as

requested and leaving it at that, you were supposed to turn negative aspects of your personality into positive ones. For example, rather than saying, “I have a short attention span,” you could have said, “I have a short attention span because I think quickly, which is why I’m so good at coming up with ideas.” The impression you left was that you couldn’t concentrate and focus.

You kept looking at your watch and fidgeting Maybe you had somewhere you had to be after the interview and you didn’t want to be late, and that’s why you kept checking the time. In addition, you always fidget when you are nervous; it’s a natural reaction. The interviewer probably interpreted your behavior differently, however. He or she might have imagined that you lacked interest in the job and were bored. In addition, you might have come across as being timid. If you want to gain employment, take a long, hard look at behaviors that might be holding you back and address them. By doing so, you will raise your chances of getting a job. Nevertheless, if you still fail your next interview, at least you will know that you gave it your best shot. u
