Have you always dreamt about becoming a writer but aren’t sure how to make it happen? While the thought of being able to write from home on your own schedule might seem impossible, the truth is that many stay-at-home moms and dads pursue successful and rewarding careers as freelance writers. Regardless of your educational or professional background, it is possible to become a freelance writer and make money writing online from home. First off, strip away any negative thoughts. If you think “I’ll never be able to make it as a writer,” you’re basically forcing yourself to fail before you

even begin. Instead, think positively about your aspirations. When you begin to feel a negative thought creeping in, immediately replace it with something more affirming. Think “It might take me awhile, but I will be something great” instead of “I’m awful at this.” The more you build yourself up, the more your self-esteem about your writing career will increase. Remember, people who think positively accomplish more than a Negative Nancy ever will. Next, start looking for online gigs. Most freelance writers choose to write online articles. There are a number of books and websites dedicated to helping writers become successful. Freelance Writing Gigs and Online Writing Jobs are both websites that help writers find online gigs, so you can peruse the writing leads on these websites for ideas for finding work online. Articles might be anywhere from 200-1,000 words on any topic imaginable. The trick is to find articles that you understand or that you feel confident enough in the topic to write about. Another option for writing online is to produce eBooks. Kindle and Nook both offer writers the

chance to create and sell books online on any topic. If you feel like writing a longer piece than an article, an eBook might be the perfect starting point. Remember that eBooks also offer a huge amount of creativity that regular short articles might not. The downside to writing eBooks? It can take months to get paid. While online articles typically pay within two weeks, eBook royalties are not paid for 60 days. Once you find a gig you like, just start writing! You don’t have to be a perfect writer. After all, that’s what your editor is for. You do need to understand basic grammar and have good spelling skills, but even if you aren’t perfect, you’ll learn. Reading online blogs or grammar books will help improve your skills, but most writers learn to perfect their craft simply through lots and lots of practice. Remember to read your client’s instructions thoroughly to avoid having to complete a rewrite of the article. After all, even if your name doesn’t appear on the article, your work should be something you can be proud of. Write accordingly. u

Those are all effective ways to attract attention (the good kind) and advance your career. However, the smartest employees also do a variety of other things to ensure that they are recognized and appreciated by the manager. Here are five seldommentioned ways to impress any boss.

Your manager will be very impressed if you show a willingness to occasionally work below your level. For instance, if you’re the accountant and a couple of your staff are sick, you could help out with the data entry to ensure that the numbers for the quarterly financial reports are available on time. For instance, if you’re the assistant manager, you could volunteer to supervise any co-op students (and do the paperwork for the educational institution) and interns accepted by the organization.

If your manager sometimes talks about their children, you could ask how the children are doing in school … or whether they’re enrolled in any special programs during

5. Thank your boss for something. This is something that many employees neglect. Like anyone else, your manager appreciates appreciation! If he/she made a special effort to perform a thorough and accurate annual performance appraisal, acknowledge the fact with sincerity. Or, if he/she pulled out all the stops to organize a great office party, make a point of saying so. Because this doesn’t happen as often as it should, your boss will remember that you expressed gratitude. There is no doubt that working hard and contributing consistently are the best ways to impress any manager. However, there are some other ways to make a good impression. These five methods will help to ensure that your boss notices you and sees you in a positive light. u
