How to Land a First Job When You Lack

EXPERIENCE Browsing job listings can be pretty disheartening. You read the list of job duties thinking, “Hm, I could probably do this,” but then you hit the dreaded requirements, and there you read it: “1-2 years experience required.”

JOBS RESOURCES

That’s pretty frustrating. Even job postings for waiting tables come with this high barrier of entry nowadays. Marketing, communications, sales and administrative jobs now all want candidates with years of related experience. Don’t be discouraged. If you really think about it, it’s impossible for all jobs to really require previous experience. If all jobs really required experience, everyone would be unemployed. How do you bootstrap your career? The first thing is to accept that you’re not going to get your dream job right away. In fact, your first job may not be that amazing, but you’ll get to use that experience to sidestep into something better, so you might as well go for it. Let’s talk about getting one of those jobs you definitely could do if it weren’t for the experience barrier. For this, you’re going to have to respin any and all life, work and volunteer experience to look transferrable. You probably have transfer-

rable experience, you just haven’t realized how you can spin it in the cover letter. If you’re looking at a sales position, consider the fact that maybe you used to babysit or petsit. Play up how you interacted with your clients and built a business network. You weren’t just looking after children- you were coordinating, scheduling, answering phone calls and running a business. See how professional that looks when you spin it this way? If the job requires lots of interaction and people skills, talk about volunteer projects you helped organize. Generally, these sorts of things take a lot of phone calls, planning and interacting. Let the employer know about your accomplishments when it comes to working with people in any sphere. If the job requires computer skills, demonstrate your knowledge of computers and use of spreadsheets for school. You may not have a

work experience bullet to show off your qualiications, but you can play yourself up by including a “skills” section at the top of the page. Use connections. If a family friend needs a part-time assistant at work, go for it. Volunteer for a short term if necessary. Even this much will give you documentable experience you can use to land your next position. Don’t view that “1-2 years” statement as a reason not to apply. Employers optimistically put high requirements on wanted ads, even though they may hire an “underqualified” person in the end. Spin your skills and life experience to get an employer’s attention. Prove to them with your skills and life experience you really can do the job. u

JOBS RESOURCES

Job hunters endure the tedium of creating effective resumes and cover letters, networking, and scouring ads and employment websites only to find the stress increases exponentially when they secure a personal interview. Fumbling an interview kills a candidate’s chance of landing the job. On the other side of the desk are hiring managers. Fully aware of the importance of a skilled and motivated workforce, the hiring manager faces pressure to find an ideal fit for every position. This is no easy task. The negative consequences of a hiring mistake can be far-reaching; affecting the organization as a whole and the manager personally. Many top executives attribute much of their career success to their ability to hire good people and give them the freedom to do their jobs. Good managers do not have the time or the inclination micro-manage. Their job is to set objectives and goals, assign tasks and provide guidance to employees who are trained, capable, and moti-

vated to carry out their responsibilities and successfully complete the job.

The All-Important Interview and the Question You Must Answer Correctly

The interview is where the hiring manager establishes whether you are one of those people she can trust to get the job done. You have already done a lot of things right if you have managed to jump through all the hoops and secure an interview with the hiring manager. You created a resume and cover letter that caught someone’s eye. Your education and employment history have been reviewed and approved and you probably passed a screening interview with a human resources person. Now it is go time. Now is the time to convince her not hiring you would be a grievous mistake. Now is your time to shine. Everything you have done right during the

process so far becomes moot during the interview with the hiring manager. She may ask you questions about your previous jobs and responsibilities, but all of that has already been covered by others. You must be must be prepared to answer all the standard questions and maybe a handle a few curveballs, but in the end the hiring manager is really interested in only the answer to only one question. The question may come in many forms or over the course of several different questions. But the answers you provide to every question point to one thing: How can you make her organization better? It’s that simple. Nothing else really matters. Answer that question to her satisfaction and you have a good chance at being hired. Drop the ball and your shot at that dream job will disappear faster than a jerky treat at a dog pound. u
