JOBS RESOURCES

Beware of the

Blog Radio talk-show hostess Kim Komando once revealed that, as part of an employee background check, she researched the personal websites and blogs of her prospective employees. What she discovered was that people will not only say the darndest things, they are now willing to publish them on the internet.

These job seekers boasted about illegally downloading music, pirating software, committing vandalism and doing other antics that are commonly classified as “criminal activity.” This discovery began a dialogue with her audience, during which she asked, “Should a person’s blog be considered when assessing their employment credentials?” What is shocking is that 40% of the respondents to her internet poll answered

this question, “No.” Respondents justified their answer with rationale ranging from “I have a right to privacy” to “the blog entries relate to their personal life.” How stupid can these people be? One of the reasons any employer – whether the CEO of a company or a homeowner seeking a reliable dog-sitter – performs background and reference checks is that a person’s behavior tends to be consistent and predictable over time. Unlike a mutual fund or stock, the past performance of a person is a reliable predictor of future results. Prior learning, established habits and values coalesce to determine behavior, and unless a person gains insight into their motivations and behaviors and exerts their will to override reflexive behaviors, then their behavioral patterns won’t change. If this were not the case, psychologists, psychiatrists and life-coaches would be unemployed. In short, this means once a criminal, always a criminal. If, in the mind of a person, it were perfectly acceptable to steal music or vandalize property, what would stop them from

stealing money or sensitive information from an employer? No reasonable person would leave the door open if they knew a burglar was outside, and no intelligent employer would knowingly hire someone who has no regard for the law or the property rights of others. Another point raised was “the right to privacy.” When someone voluntarily publishes something on a web page, they have put their information within access of potentially one billion eyeballs. Where does “privacy” come in? This would be like someone stripping naked in the middle of Times Square in New York City during rush hour, and then being upset because a lot of people stop and stare. The bottom line is, if something needs to be private, don’t share it, period. Perusing a blog is a little like observing a person from a distance and when they are less guarded in their actions. This can provide more information to a prospective employer than would those overly-rehearsed, cut and dried answers given by eager job applicants. Imagine reading a profanity-laced, irrational blog

authored by someone seeking a customer service or sales position. Would anyone want to turn a potty-mouthed lunatic loose as the spokesperson for his or her company? Not likely! Similarly, reading a well-written, cogent blog may change an employer’s opinion of the individual who is brilliant in writing, but lacks interviewing skills. Blogs reflect attitudes, values, reasoning skills, intellect and personality; the same anonymity that makes blogging an attractive way to vent also makes it a true window to the writer’s soul. The blogger who is also a job seeker should follow two rules: 1) use a penname, and don’t mention the blog in a résumé or cover letter. Reference other, less personal, work samples if these are required for the job you are seeking, and/or 2) keep the blog civil, coherent and put your best foot forward. If you wouldn’t mention wrecking your car during a lost and hazy weekend or cheating on your wife during an interview, don’t mention it in a blog. Discretion has always been the better part of valor. u

JOBS RESOURCES

Do you know the Unwritten Tools of Business Promotion? Today an employee might work long hours, work hard, have the brainpower, and demonstrate loyalty, but still fail to get noticed or promoted. Yes, employees must also produce or else find themselves out the door, but where rewards and promotion are concerned, an employee is often evaluated through a hidden set of factors.

By Joy R. Calderwood In many cases, people are rewarded and promoted based on their height, good looks, personality, and on the whim of how management feels about them. Managers will deny such discrimination, but it exists. It’s a sad reality, but the handsome guy who looks like an ace in the hole may actually be more of an arse, yet wins the promotion. He could chronically fail to produce or meet commitments, show up late, and even stink at public speaking, but in his case, because of his stature and good looks, his poor performance is more easily overlooked. This type of rating system makes it hard for the person who can do little to change his height or appearance. Should the less winsome say something stupid, get on someone’s nerves, or show up dressed slovenly, he’d better look out. The person with the awkward personality and lousy joke timing might find himself downgraded beyond what’s rational. Behaviour and deportment plays a large part in how a person is assessed and promoted, so how

JOBS RESOURCES does the person with low social IQ or an immature sense of humour climb the ladder? How does the short, balding, borderline attractive, or awkward person gain respect?

Tips for Improving Business Behaviour There’s no guarantee that trying anything will get you where you want to go, especially if the suggestions go against your inborn traits or character or if you work for close-minded people. But there are always a few things you can try in order to improve how you’re perceived. Here are a few examples: 1. Humility is attractive, arrogance is unattractive. Act more down-to-earth and less like a know-it-all. 2. Earn respect by being respectful of others. Be punctual and interested in what others have to say. 3. Build trust and demonstrate character. Communicate well and follow through on commitments. 4. Resolve conflicts before they escalate. Look for solutions that bring peace to situations.

5.

Help build the business. Be proactive in uncovering new business opportunities. 6. Edit your conversations. Think before you speak, don’t tell misplaced jokes, and for goodness sake, don’t talk too much. 7. Enhance your personality. Cultivate outside interests that will give you balance and make you a more interesting person. 8. Dress for promotion. Consult with store personnel or hire a style consultant to learn how to dress attractively and appropriately. 9. Make yourself appear taller with good posture. Check with body language experts who offer tips on ways to look more professional. 10. Demonstrate professional maturity. Don’t complain about coworkers or clients. 11. Don’t be patronizing to anyone. Be especially careful of the use of sarcasm or misplaced humour both in person and through email, it may backfire. 12. Don’t get a reputation of being inflexible, a wet blanket, cheapskate, or a downer. Be open to investigating new ideas. Do these over a long period of time.

Demonstrating your character and earning trust takes time. You might do all of this and still get passed by, though. If that’s the case, you might want to look for a job where you’ll be more appreciated, or you might want to consult with management about why you’re constantly passed by and ask what can be done to change it. In all cases, what others think about you isn’t as important as what you think about yourself. Appreciate the positives you know you have and don’t let a lack of promotion get you down. Do the best job in the position you’re in and you’ll reap rewards in other ways. Lastly, don’t be guilty of disregarding the talents of others on your team by focusing on their poor deportment, annoying personalities, or other social faux pas. Check yourself to ensure you’re not discriminating against anyone yourself. u
