Make Money

WRITING ONLINE Does the thought of working from home seem too good to be true? Are you tired of hearing about your friends who have created successful online businesses? Have you always dreamt about becoming a writer but aren’t sure how to make it happen? While the thought of being able to write from home on your own schedule might seem impossible, the truth is that many stay-at-home moms and dads pursue successful and rewarding careers as freelance writers. Regardless of your educational or professional background, it is possible to become a freelance writer and make money writing online from home. First off, strip away any negative thoughts. If you think “I’ll never be able to make it as a

writer,” you’re basically forcing yourself to fail before you even begin. Instead, think positively about your aspirations. When you begin to feel a negative thought creeping in, immediately replace it with something more affirming. Think “It might take me awhile, but I will be something great” instead of “I’m awful at this.” The more you build yourself up, the more your self-esteem about your writing career will increase. Remember, people who think positively accomplish more than a Negative Nancy ever will. Next, start looking for online gigs. Most freelance writers choose to write online articles. There are a number of books and websites dedicated to helping writers become successful. Freelance Writing Gigs and Online Writing Jobs are both websites that help writers find online gigs, so you can peruse the writing leads on these websites for ideas for finding work online. Articles might be anywhere from 200-1,000 words on any topic imaginable. The trick is to find articles that you understand or that you feel confident enough in the topic to write about. Another option for writing online is to produce eBooks. Kindle and Nook both offer writers the chance to create and sell books online on any

topic. If you feel like writing a longer piece than an article, an eBook might be the perfect starting point. Remember that eBooks also offer a huge amount of creativity that regular short articles might not. The downside to writing eBooks? It can take months to get paid. While online articles typically pay within two weeks, eBook royalties are not paid for 60 days. Once you find a gig you like, just start writing! You don’t have to be a perfect writer. After all, that’s what your editor is for. You do need to understand basic grammar and have good spelling skills, but even if you aren’t perfect, you’ll learn. Reading online blogs or grammar books will help improve your skills, but most writers learn to perfect their craft simply through lots and lots of practice. Remember to read your client’s instructions thoroughly to avoid having to complete a rewrite of the article. After all, even if your name doesn’t appear on the article, your work should be something you can be proud of. Write accordingly. u

6 Reasons you

FAILED Your Last Job Interview

When you failed your last job interview, your friends and family might have told you not to worry; as someone else was probably already lined up for the job and you didn’t stand a chance. Alternatively, they might have told you that it wasn’t meant to be, and that a better job would come along. The only problem is that their well-meant words won’t have helped you. Other jobs don’t just ‘come along,’ and chances are, there wasn’t anyone else waiting in the wings to take up the position you applied for. The blunt truth is that another candidate for the job was considered a superior bet...

JOBS RESOURCES Taking on a new employee is always a gamble, but if people don’t make the grade during job interviews, they are bound to fail. The reasons you failed to gain employment might be listed below.

You were late Of course, it wasn’t your fault that your car ran out of petrol, you were in a monster traffic jam, or you had to drop your little sister at her ballet class before you arrived at the interview. All of these excuses are valid. However, they will have provided the interviewer with evidence that you were probably a bad bet. Punctuality is necessary in most jobs, and slovenly timekeeping could be sign of laziness.

You looked a mess How could you help it if the wind messed up your hair and the rain made your mascara run? You’re not in charge of the weather. Likewise, if a button dropped off your shirt on the journey to the interview, or you suddenly realized too late that you hadn’t ironed your suit properly, you aren’t to blame. These things happen. There again, if the other candidates for the job turned up for their interviews looking smart, but you

walked in looking like something a cat left on the mat, no wonder you weren’t hired.

You smelled like garlic and body odor Okay, so your mom cooked you a lovely dinner full of garlic last night, and you forgot to use a deodorant. These problems could happen to anyone, only they don’t; they happen to you. No one wants to work alongside someone who smells bad, let alone leave him or her in the company of clients.

You sat there like a wet blanket Whether you were shy or unprepared, and this is what made you sit silently through the interview without showing enthusiasm, it doesn’t matter. Not showing signs of life and interest in the position at hand will have made you look bad. The person who got the job probably sparkled with life and passion, or at least made good job of giving the impression that they did.

You were negative The interviewer may have asked you an awkward question that was designed to test your metal. Instead of listing your bad qualities as

requested and leaving it at that, you were supposed to turn negative aspects of your personality into positive ones. For example, rather than saying, “I have a short attention span,” you could have said, “I have a short attention span because I think quickly, which is why I’m so good at coming up with ideas.” The impression you left was that you couldn’t concentrate and focus.

You kept looking at your watch and fidgeting Maybe you had somewhere you had to be after the interview and you didn’t want to be late, and that’s why you kept checking the time. In addition, you always fidget when you are nervous; it’s a natural reaction. The interviewer probably interpreted your behavior differently, however. He or she might have imagined that you lacked interest in the job and were bored. In addition, you might have come across as being timid. If you want to gain employment, take a long, hard look at behaviors that might be holding you back and address them. By doing so, you will raise your chances of getting a job. Nevertheless, if you still fail your next interview, at least you will know that you gave it your best shot. u

JOBS RESOURCES

Those are all effective ways to attract attention (the good kind) and advance your career. However, the smartest employees also do a variety of other things to ensure that they are recognized and appreciated by the manager. Here are five seldommentioned ways to impress any boss.

summer vacation, and so on. If your boss mentions a hobby, you could ask what related projects they are currently pursuing – or share anecdotes about your own hobby. This creates a personal bond and opens the manager’s eyes to your personal qualities.

1. Go below your station (occasionally).

3. Take over something the boss doesn’t like to do.

Your manager will be very impressed if you show a willingness to occasionally work below your level. For instance, if you’re the accountant and a couple of your staff are sick, you could help out with the data entry to ensure that the numbers for the quarterly financial reports are available on time. Or, if you run the warehouse, you could pitch in to load a truck so that an important delivery is not delayed.

Your manager is only human, so undoubtedly there are job tasks that he/she doesn’t really enjoy. So, if it is feasible for you to do so (and if it’s not disallowed by relevant company policies), you could offer to take responsibility for a task they hate. For instance, if you’re the assistant manager, you could volunteer to supervise any co-op students (and do the paperwork for the educational institution) and interns accepted by the organization.

2. Show personal interest. While you should never intrude upon your boss’s privacy, there may be opportunities to relate to him/her on a personal level. If your manager sometimes talks about their children, you could ask how the children are doing in school … or whether they’re enrolled in any special programs during

4. Acknowledge an error. Obviously this is a suggestion that you should only consider if it applies! But of the shoe fits … definitely put it on. While it is normally advisable to emphasize our achievements and downplay any

inadequacies, there are times when acknowledging an error in a forthright manner is the best policy. Pick a good time to communicate with your boss, then indicate the error and express regret for any negative impact upon the organization. Your manager will be impressed by your honesty and your willingness to take ownership of a mistake.

5. Thank your boss for something. This is something that many employees neglect. Like anyone else, your manager appreciates appreciation! If he/she made a special effort to perform a thorough and accurate annual performance appraisal, acknowledge the fact with sincerity. Or, if he/she pulled out all the stops to organize a great office party, make a point of saying so. Because this doesn’t happen as often as it should, your boss will remember that you expressed gratitude. There is no doubt that working hard and contributing consistently are the best ways to impress any manager. However, there are some other ways to make a good impression. These five methods will help to ensure that your boss notices you and sees you in a positive light. u
