JOBS RESOURCES Most people report feeling stressed at work on occasion, as it is only natural to encounter situations that cause anxiety in the workplace at times. However, some people experience career related stress more often than others do. You may assume that this is because they work in a stressful job, but you could be wrong. Undoubtedly, some careers are more stressful than others are. Doctors for example, are more likely to encounter stressful situations than gardeners are. However, a recent study suggests that being good or bad at handling stress can be put down to genetics. Theoretically, if your genetics are such that stress affects you badly, even if your job simply involves pruning roses, you may find time spent at work more stressful than a heart surgeon with more affable genes does. The fact that work related stress can have little to do with your job should make you think twice before handing in your notice when you are

strained. It may be best to consider whether the problem you are experiencing is about how you cope with stress, rather than whether your job is forcing you into breakdown mode. One way to establish whether it’s your job that is the problem, or your genetics, is to consider your work history. People who have a low stress threshold are often serial career hoppers. They quit work easily, but fail to recognize that there is nothing wrong with the jobs they discard. Another method of finding out if your job really is to blame for your experience of stress overload is to look at your colleagues. Do they complain of stress too? Additionally, if your colleagues are frequently on sick leave, or there is a high turnover of staff at work, it could be that your job is the problem after all. If it looks as though genetics might be causing your high stress levels, you may find it helpful to go to work armed with relaxation techniques up your sleeve. You cannot change your genetics, but you can manage your reactions mindfully instead of letting them rule. Reference: Notre Dame News u

JOBS RESOURCES

The job market has changed. It is difficult to get a job if you do not know how to use a computer. Many businesses need technology to compete. Adults need valuable computer skills. Workers have been laid off from jobs that will never return. For instance, technology has automated tasks done by humans. Lawmakers have deregulated industries, which lets businesses compete in several states. Big business makes it hard for mom and pop to compete. As a result, many small businesses have closed. Globalization has led to American jobs being sent overseas. Russia, China, India can make products at a cheaper price than America. Unemployed workers quickly learn they do not have the knowledge or skills to compete. They do not know how to conduct a job search. Out of work employees have no experience creating resumes. This results in poor interview skills because the unemployed person does not understand the job search process.

Church Events

Community resources can help job seekers find employment. Local churches regularly meet to combat unemployment. Guest speakers such as job recruiters and local businesses are often invited to meet attendees.

Churches provide a variety of activities to help the unemployed.. Activities may include one-onone counseling sessions, mock interviews, and breakfast roundtable discussions. Sometimes clothing is provided to promote a professional job seeker image. These group meetings allow everyone to network and build relationships. Job search events at church are often free. Find participating churches by talking to family and friends, research the yellow pages, or search online at sites such as Google, Yahoo, or Bing.

Employment Security Commission

Another great resource is the unemployment office. Agencies provide government resources related to grants, free unemployment training, and classes to help with the job search. Just ask if you need a specific resource. In states like North Carolina, the Employment Security Commission partners with community colleges. For example, the college provides training at the Employment Security site. Contact the Employment Security Commission to get more information. Services are normally free to unemployed persons.

career resources online and offline. Libraries throughout the United States provide no cost online training for Microsoft Office products. Contact your library about career resources. Most do not charge patrons.

Community College

The community college may have career services that are no cost to low cost. These schools can prepare adult learners for the workplace. In addition, training may be provided for unemployed students who need employability training. Classes may include resume preparation, mock interviews, and help creating job related documents. Contact your college and request information about job seeking resources.

Conclusion

The job market has changed. Many employees lost their jobs to technology, deregulation, and globalization. However, job seekers can access community resources for assistance. u
