JOBS RESOURCES Transcription
Transcription can be a good avenue to explore if you’re looking for legitimate at-home work. A transcriber listens to interviews, lectures, or focus groups and creates a transcript from what they hear. Though it may sound like easy work, there are some skills which you must possess to do well in this kind of job. For one thing, you must have solid listening skills. Transcribers will sometimes have to transcribe poor quality audio or people with heavy accents, and they must be able to create accurate transcripts despite this. Some other skills a transcriber needs are a solid grasp of the English language, a quick typing speed, and the ability to work well with computers. If this sounds like you, it may be time to start looking into entry level transcription work.
Search Engine Evaluation
Search engine evaluation is another avenue which may be worth looking into. Search engine evaluators help improve search engine results by rating how relevant certain websites are for a particular query. For example, a search engine evaluator may rate how relevant a dog food website is for the query “dogs.” If this sounds like something
you could see yourself doing, you may want to look into it. Search engine evaluators must have solid research skills, be up-to-date on current events, and work well on a computer. The pay is decent if you are able to do the work at a good speed.
an at-home job. That said, working from home can be truly rewarding if you find good sources of work. All it takes is figuring out what you want to do and taking steps to make it a reality. u
Writing
Another avenue worth exploring is writing. There are many different kinds of writing a person can do from home. A person can write articles, blogs, ads, and even greeting cards. It is just a matter of figuring out what you want to write, and then looking for work in your desired area. If you want to write articles, for example, a good place to start may be decent-paying content mills and bid sites. You could use these to improve your writing, steadily gaining the confidence and portfolio to apply to higher-paying jobs. Writing is not for everyone, but it can be a rewarding career path if you don’t mind doing it and are good at it. The important thing to remember with any athome work is that it is still work. You may be able to do it in your pajamas, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t have to put effort into it. If an at-home job seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always make sure to do your research before applying for

JOBS RESOURCES A great deal of time is spent looking into what hiring managers hope to find in candidates for jobs during interviews, but little energy is spent delving into recognizing what they don’t want. Unfortunately this can leave jobseekers clueless when it comes to what not to do when in an interview. Understanding behavior to avoid can prevent people from being turned down for a job.
Stick to company policy
Often rules are set out clearly for candidates regarding how to follow up interviews, apply for jobs and provide resume information. Candidates are asked only to make inquiries between certain times of day, or to read regulations about company ethics before attending an interview. Unfortunately such rules are often inadvertently overlooked. This can result in managers despairing about the poor quality of candidates they have to interview and placing some resumes in the rubbish bin.
Use positive non-verbal communication The way a candidate conducts themselves via body language during an interview can make a dif-
ference as to how they are perceived. Many people realize that they should gain eye contact, smile and be able to deliver a fine handshake. However they may not see the need to wait to be asked to sit down before doing so, or how off-putting it is for a hiring manager to try to interview them as they stare absent-mindedly out of the window and twiddle their thumbs. Nervous gestures, rudeness indicated by being overly confident and body language which reveals a lack of genuine interest is likely to reduce their chances of acquiring a job.
Listen well
Most candidates want interviews to be over fast. They can be so nervous that they find it hard to really listen, as worries and concerns twirl around in their head. Unfortunately this gives a bad impression to the person conducting an interview. If jobseekers don’t listen to what hiring managers say this may be put down to low self esteem and an inability to focus. Candidates who don’t learn how to listen attentively, and prove that they are doing so are likely to be written off.
Ask questions
It can be frustrating for hiring managers to go through interview after interview and not be able to find a single candidate who is interested or clued up enough to bother to ask questions about their potential new job. The real reason individuals refrain from asking questions may be an attempt to get an interview over with and so obtain relief, or it may be due to a lack of planning. Not having questions ready to ask can make a candidate seem bored and disinterested, and is likely to end their chances of being hired. Job seekers who learn about how to avoid irritating hiring managers will come across as more agreeable and suitable for employment. By listening well, asking questions, following company protocol, and not engaging in poor body language candidates have better odds when it comes to making a good impression and achieving their aims. u
Do gain eye contact, smile and deliver a firm handshake.
