(if the 'graphicxtras' folder does not exist, simply create it in the plug-ins folder or use another folder name if you wish. You can also just place the file in the top level plug-ins folder if you wish but putting it in a sub folder makes it easier to find at a later date)

Alternate plug-in installation location Because of recent improvements in security, you may wish to install the plug-in sets in an alternate location such as an user account and not the default plug-in folder. If you are using a basic level account and one without admin features, you might not be able to save the AIP plug-in files to the usual folder. Set up an alternate or secondary plug-in folder in your user account and then copy the files there.

To specify an alternate plug-in for Illustrator 速 1) Go to the edit > preferences > plug-ins 2) Check the additional plug-ins folder option 3) Specify / browse for your required file in your user account (such as 'third party plug-ins' etc)

Initial use of plug-ins Please access the plugins via the filters menu of Illustrator 速 via the <AVP Paths> menu + <AVP Create> Menu (CS3 CS2 CS 10) Please access the plug-ins via the object > filters menu (CS4) The gridlock plugins requires a path to be selected to define the size of the grid. The lineup and spiralcity and sharpedge require no paths and purely create paths, though you may wish to set the initial fill and stroke etc for the paths The randomcolors and negativecolors plugin requires a path or paths to work.

Presets The plugins all comes with a selection of PRESETS, select one of these to change the settings to a pre-defined set of values (though the actual result might vary depending on the current fill etc or the level of randomization in the preset)

Shuffle button SHUFFLE button randomizes the value used based on the current setting (if randomization has been set such as random curve or distance), not all fields have randomization and so will be ignored by the shuffle button

Tumble button Click the TUMBLE button to randomization many of the settings to their extreme (though not all and not all to their extreme as duplications etc can be processor intensive and 100s of duplications can cause serious response slowdown). Hopefully most of the settings will be reasonable and the tumble button is a great way to experiment.

View control VIEW field changes the navigator zoom level within the plugin, this changes the bounds of the document view and this is used in some of the plugins (such as abstract)

Drag buttons

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes DRAG buttons are connected with some of the key fields. Click and then hold down the shift key and drop across (in most cases) or if the field is a vertical related field then drag up and down, the related field will be updated interactively (as fast as possible). As mentioned, be careful with the use of this and random fill / stroke etc as the response can be fairly rapid and intense in many cases. Release the shift key when you wish to stop the field being updated.

Applications support MAC OS X 10.2 10.3 10.4 10.5 / 98 ME NT XP Vista Adobe 速 Illustrator 速10 CS 1 CS2 CS3 CS4

Gridlock Plug-in *** NOTE: Please be very careful with some of the functionality if you suffer from light sensitive problems / issues as using certainly functionality and rapidly changing settings and random fill colors or path strokes, can create an intense set of color changes. This might be same for many different path combinations. This is mainly connected with the interactive drag buttons. Basically, be careful of rapid changes of settings! A grid plug-in. To use, please select a path to 'define' the height and width of the grid. Creates a variety of grids / table paths. On completion, please use the pathfinder commands to combine etc or just use the group command

Grid Dialog 'Up across' options: By default, the grid settings are set the same in both directions. By clicking the link to OFF, you can modify the across or up / down settings.

'Type' options: By default, the grid is created using rectangular boxes but the grid can also be made of lines, ovals, or guidelines.

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

'Number of lines': The number of lines to create for the grid in the current set direction.

'Line thickness': The thickness of the grid lines

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

'Alternate line thickness': An additional amount added to alternate lines in the grid.

'Skip': & Create By default, the grid is created without skipping lines. The apply pattern skips and creates lines, creating many variant grids. The grid can be 2 lines followed by a larger gap (skipped lines) followed by 2 more lines and so on. Does depend on the number of lines in the grid in the first place.

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

Modify dialog 'Shift': The lines are shifted from their default position (generally without breaking the bounds of the grid).

'Skew': A variant scaling option for the grid.

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

'Curve': Basic curvature added to the grid, varies from grid type

Fill dialog 'Fill': Instead of using the current fill (if there is a fill), the lines can be modified (left to right) (upwards) to a new color setting depending on the fill option and the fill channels set. If the lines are RGB, the fourth box is ignored. If the lines are grayscale, the last three fields are ignored. A variety of different color settings can be applied such as targeting the 'final' line in the grid to the dialog color (creating a gradient) or random colors. 'Stroke': As fill, but for the rectangular stroke or the line stroke. Ignored if no stroke set. 'Width': The line width or weight is modified based on the user defined setting (/10th of a point) and dropdown.

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

Settings dialog 'Delete definition path': By default, the defining box or path is deleted but you might wish to keep the path and use the grid as a frame or have the original defining path as a background to the grid. 'Settings [R]': Randomizes the values used for the creation of the grid, works best if the values are set to higher values such an apply pattern of 10 10. Very useful for experimentation with 100s of different grid designs. 'Jitter': Instead of just shifting the paths by a fixed amount (see a previous dialog), the shift is random.

'Shift ratio': A variant randomness applied to grid creation (uses the skew setting

Plug-ins notes

'Color': Color settings for the individual color channels (varies depending on the current function dropdown). By default, if an RGB path and the default type / function is applied, the color channels are 255 - current value by default, changing the setting changes the 255 part of the equation. The first entry is for cyan or red or gray, the second for magenta or green, the third for yellow and blue, and the final for black. The plug-in works best when the color model (say RGB or CMYK) matches the color of the path and the negative setting (i.e. CMYK or RGB), though the plug-in should be fine with mixing document color model / path color / plug-in color.

'Negative opacity': Reverses the opacity / transparency of the paths

RandomColors plug-in Apply random colors to selected paths *** NOTE: Please be very careful with some of the functionality if you suffer from light sensitive problems / issues as using certainly functionality and rapidly changing settings and random fill colors or path strokes, can create an intense set of color changes. This might be same for many different path combinations. This is mainly connected with the interactive drag buttons. Basically, be careful of rapid changes of settings!

Colors dialog 'Channels': Color settings for the color channels. The plugin color channel 1 is cyan / red / gray; 2 for green and magenta; blue and yellow for 3; and 4 for black. It is best to use the correct document color model / path color / plug-in color setting

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes for randomization to work correctly. The actual setting and application of the fill / stroke channel settings depends on the dropdown below such as current fill + randomization based on settings OR total random etc.

'Random type options': Type of randomization to apply (and to fill or the path's stroke)

Variance dialog 'Interpolate': Interpolates between the original color and the new randomized color. Great for subtle variations of color

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

'Path factor': Factor applied to the fill based on the path creation order. This will lighten or darken the subsequent paths (sometimes tricky to work out, as the paths may have been created in a variety of ways and times) 'Range': Only apply the randomization if the original color settings are between (inclusive) these settings (the average of the cyan / magenta etc or red / green / blue)

'Color options': Variant color operations such as averaging or negative

file:///C|/...Andrew/Products/Documentation%20NOT%20FOR%20RELEASE/Illustrator%20plugins/Volume%202/GX02_Documentation.htm[30/10/2008 19:27:11]

Plug-ins notes

Settings dialog 'Opacity [R]': Randomized opacity between 0 and 100 'Blend mode [R]': Blend mode randomized for each path (to difference, multiply etc) 'Style [R]': Apply random styles based on the current styles palette (this can be fairly slow depending on the styles in the palette). Perhaps you might just want sketch effects, then remove all the non-sketch styles. 'Width [R]': Randomizes the width of the path's line between 0 and original width

'Symbolize': Turns the path into a symbol (it will appear in the symbol palette) 'Apply [R]': Apply the randomization or not (randomly, of course)

If the start position is not set to variable, all the frames will be created in the same location. Sketch color options': Ignored if the sketch repeats is set to 0. The sketch color options colors the stroke of the created sketch lines. The options include random colors, using the original color, opacity settings and more. 'Sketch weight': Weight added to the path's sketch stroke (this can also be randomized via the setting's dialog). Creates a more random sketchy feel, as if the pencil has been applied lightly then a little heavier etc 'Sketch shift': The sketchiness of the created stroke lines. 'Sketch repeats': The number of 'repeats' of the stroked path to create.
