Patterns manual Thanks for the purchase (or interest) in the patterns sets. Andrew
Installation of patterns zip: Please extract the bmp files (or PNG files) from the zip folder and place in the required install folder CD: Please select and copy/drag the bitmaps (*.bmp or *.png depending on the set) to the required location such as the patterns folder indicated below.
Installation folder For PSP: please place the patterns (*.bmp or *.png files) in the Paint Shop Pro patterns folder or the c:\documents and settings\...\My Documents\My PSP8 Files\Patterns (for psp 8) or in the Paint Shop Pro Patterns folder For later versions of PSP, please place the patterns in the documents and settings folder marked 'My PSP Files' (found in the my documents folder). For Vista and PSP, please place the files in the users folder 'documents / My PSP Files patterns' With Photo X2 and X1, you can also put the patterns into the corel_08 sub folder of Paint Shop Pro.
Example location for the patterns can be found in the 'my psp files'. The patterns location can also be modified via the file locations preference.
Install location for other applications Please place the bitmap files in the various applications textures/patterns folder and please consult the host documentation. The files included in this package are standard BMP files and can be used in many host applications as background textures or brush stroke textures and 3D applications for bump maps etc. Some applications use a fill gallery or a different approach to adding the patterns, again the best way to understand how to install them for your particular application is the manual. The patterns can also be installed for use in 3D applications and vector applications and may require some conversion (such as tracing the bitmap and turning it into a vector)
Serial number Please keep this serial number safe and use for future reference as well as replacement CDs. You will find the serial number in a folder marked 'serial number' or some such variant

License You can check the license via the product license folder, a copy can also be found on http://www.graphicxtras.com/license.htm
Thumbnails The package comes with a gallery of thumbnails but you might prefer to create your own bigger and perhaps more informative gallery. Good tools for this is are PSP's own browser or Infranview or Adobe Bridge or Portfolio or PhotoImpact's browser or iPhoto. The galleries included in this package were created using Photoshop and contact sheet functionality.

EPS patterns (if supplied in set) The EPS files are generally not seamless but they are fairly big pattern designs. They can be loaded into PSP via the open menu and then saved as a TIFF 3000 x 3000 etc or you can load them via the materials palette and used as fills / bucket fills. The EPS patterns are EPS format 3 files, vector designs. The EPS files can be placed in the same location as the BMP files. As mentioned, you may also wish to convert the EPS patterns into a huge bitmap (or not) If you do not wish to use the EPS, please just ignore them, they are fairly memory intensive.
Some applications might require conversion to a normal bitmap for use, not all support EPS files in their gallery / fill functionality
Loading the patterns via the open file command will require details for the dpi etc. You can set them to a default value via preferences, this will be the value used by PSP for each and every EPS file opened. The greater the value, the higher the impact on resources of PSP
On opening the EPS file, this dialog may appear. Not the greater the settings, the larger the memory requirement. NOTE: It is probably best to keep the resolution at 72 unless you have a lot of computer memory. Filling text etc at 300 dpi with some of the EPS can be a slow process on a 'reasonable' PC
Hints and tips The use of the patterns will vary from host application to host application. The patterns can generally be used as fills or surface textures or perhaps imported into the application’s own pattern format (such as using a define pattern in Photoshop Ž).
Materials palette Access the patterns via the materials palette in Paint Shop Pro ÂŽ This is the same for all types of patterns such as bitmaps and EPS. The more patterns in the gallery, the slower the response of the palette, so you may prefer to add files to the patterns folder in small amounts, and storing the general patterns in an 'off-folder' folder for future use and projects. Patterns can be manipulated in many ways such as scaling or angle.
Patterns as textures The patterns files can also be used as textures, simply add the files to the textures folder as well as the patterns folder (or not). The pattern files can also be added to a number of other folders such as bump maps folder.
Patterns as brush textures Add the patterns files to the textures folder. Apply the patterns using different blending modes such as difference or apply using a lower opacity value, say 50%
Source for new patterns Or use as a source for your own patterns (as a starting point). Take a part of the pattern or build up the new patterns with multiple copies of the existing pattern. Perhaps apply effects to the pattern design. To convert the pattern into a new pattern, you will need to apply either a third party plugin such as Andrew's Plug-ins (all come with pattern tile features) or Terrazzo and others.
Patterns in Painter ™ Use the patterns in other applications such as Painter ™ Each application has its own way of installing and accessing the pattern files. Some applications may only read the files via the open command or import command and may ignore the files in their fill gallery etc, so you may have to convert the EPS files to TIFFs or BMP files or JPGs (this is definitely the case for a number of plug-ins as they have only a limited set of support for files). Once you have opened the patterns in Painter ™ then the patterns can be captured using the patterns palette. The patterns then can be applied via a brush or fill etc
Once captured in Painter, you can use the patterns with the fill command, apply as a surface texture using original luminance / glass distortions, clone features and more
Plug-ins and patterns The patterns can also be used in various plug-ins such as KPT plug-ins (KPT Gel etc) but there are many more available that use the bitmaps as a source for effects. The patterns can also be used in 3D applications such as Typestry 速 or Bryce or Poser 速
Environment maps You can also use the patterns as an environment map or bump map in the balls and bubbles filter in PSP.
Patterns in Photoshop 速 In Photoshop 速, use the pattern files as patterns stored in native pattern libraries, use the define pattern command to save the file
The pattern is not seamless but it is tricky to spot the seams Once they are stored as a pattern, you can use them in fill content layer command or as a normal fill or via the layer effects dialog in pattern overlay
The patterns can also be used as displacements. Open the EPS or bmp files and then convert them to PSD format and add the files to the displacements folder of Photoshop and use them in the filter gallery or displace filter or the glass filter or texturizer filter.
Text and patterns You can fill text with patterns (as well as gradients). Convert to curves and ungroup to fill with a pattern
Preset shapes and patterns You can also fill individual preset shapes via the materials palette. Set to basic fill, gradient or pattern. Note you can also set the fill to an EPS pattern but if you set the dpi setting to a high value, be aware that you might wait for a while (depends on your PC)
