Gardening Doesn't Have to Hurt By: Joe Lamp'l I enjoy gardening so much, there have been times when I have started my day in peak shape, only to crawl into the house from pain and fatigue 12 hours later. Would I do it again? You bet, and I have on numerous occasions. Sure, I attack my hobby with all the vigor I can muster. By the time the weekend rolls around I always have so much to do and so little time. Yet, in spite of my overzealous approach to the weekend warrior duties, the fact remains, I overdo it! Now, truth be told, I don't always take the time to use the right tool to make the job at hand easier and pain-free. So, I'm as much to blame for my aches and pains at the end of the day as anything else I can think of. Especially these days where there are so many great tools and methods to make gardening accessible and easy for just about anyone. No matter what your age or physical condition, we could all benefit from making some smart choices when it comes to gardening.
Gloves:
Above all, gloves offer protection that no gardener should be without. Yet, who wants to wear an uncomfortable or clunky pair? All too often, we make the choice to do without for the sake of comfort but at the cost of painful blisters or worse. Today there is a style of glove for every job, from the highly tactile, super comfortable and lightweight Atlas gloves, to the fashionable yet rugged and comfortable West County Gardener gloves that even offer a line made from recycled water bottles. And yes, they come in 'green'.
outerwear:
Now that your hands are covered, what about those knees? I've discovered one of my all time favorite things to have on when I'm getting down and dirty: Green Jeans. These 'garden chaps' are very much like what you'd see on a cowboy. But these aren't heavy leather. They're made of a washable, wind resistant, water repellant rip-stop nylon that's lightweight and comfortable to wear. But wait! Here's the best part; these chaps not only protect your pants from dirt and grime; they have kneepads sewn right into them. That's right folks -- no more dealing with uncomfortable pads held in place with tight elastic that collects sweat and dirt and then slide down your leg. The Green Jeans' pads stay in place because they're part of the chap that's supported from your waist. And they're a snap to get on and off ... literally!
tools:
I'd always heard, having the right tool for the job makes all the difference in the world. Over the years, I've been reminded of just how true this is. Here are some of my favorites for the yard and garden. They all happen to be made by Fiskars. But that's not surprising. I'm a big fan of their products and you're about to see why. I only wish these had been around as long as I've been gardening! PowerGear Pruners: To start, these babies have three times the cutting power compared to standard pruning tools. They look good and feel great, too. The patented design provides maximum leverage near the middle of the cut, right when you need it the most! The added feature I love about this pruner is the rotating handle. As
you make a cut, the handle rolls with your fingers, reducing fatigue and stress. These pruners, along with the other power gear tools in the Fiskars lineup are the only tools in their class to receive the "Ease-of-Use" Commendation by the Arthritis Foundation. Now that's saying a lot! Joe Gardener(R), AKA Joe Lamp'l knows what tools will provide comfort in the garden, including Fiskars' PowerGear Pruners. Telescoping Power-Lever position. Bypass Lopper: So you see, gardening really doesn't have to Speaking of pruning, I hate to drag out the ladhurt anymore. With the proper protection on der for those low-lying branches that I just can't your hands and knees and tools to protect your reach. I've discovered a great solution, these extremities and back, what's left? Well, I guess telescoping loppers can reach over 37 inches someone needs to come up with a stylish hard with a simple extension of the handles. In addihart for when you cut through those overhead tion, they have the added benefit of Power-Lever limbs faster than you realized! mechanism that increases leverage to make cutting easier. Welcome Spring with a Real Backyard (MS) -- As temperatures begin to climb, thoughts turn to the backyard: is it ready for spring? If your outdoor living space needs some serious TLC before the flowers bloom, here are some great ideas for cre-
ating a natural, authentic backyard oasis. Get decked out. The heart of any backyard is a solid wooden deck. It's the perfect spot for grilling, sharing family meals, relaxing with friends, playing with the
dog, and enjoying nature. Whether you have a deck that needs a little updating or you're thinking of building a new wood deck, download the free Authentic Deck Guide at www.realoutdoorliving. com for information on

upkeep, construction and building material selection. Add an outdoor room. Already have a wood deck? Great! So what's next for your yard? Brad Staggs, HGTV and DIY show host and producer, and a licensed contractor, offers a few ideas: "Think outside the box and create a lovely little outdoor living room for your family and friends. Start with a nice, quiet spot under a tree or off in a corner. Add a garden bench and a couple of
wooden chairs, plus a fire pit or chiminea, and top it off with a deep arbor covered in a climbing vine. Involve the entire family by building a simple bench and chairs, and let Mom pick out the perfect flower for the arbor. Then, sit back, toast some s'mores and enjoy the fruits of your labor!" Keep it real. Your deck and other outdoor living projects should mesh with your backyard and be a seamless partner with nature. Unless you

have plastic flowers and trees in your yard, why choose fake decking? Truth is, pressure-treated wood is the best option for decks and outdoor projects. It's beautiful, strong, durable and affordable. Wood doesn't conduct heat like other decking materials can, meaning no burned feet in the heat of summer. When treated properly, wood is impervious to rot and pests. And treated wood is proven to be people- and pet-safe. Sure there's a little bit of upkeep -- no building products are truly maintenance-free. Every spring when you clean your home and wash and wax your car for the first time, take a look at your deck and see if it needs a little cleaning or perhaps another coat of sealant. That's all it takes. Concerned about our forests? Choosing wood for any home improvement project is a very wise environmental decision. Thriving, sustainably managed forests create a healthier environment for all of us. Choosing forest products -- wood -- encourages US landowners to keep replanting trees. The forest industry plants more trees than they harvest every single year, ensuring wood will be around for generations to come. Wood is one of the only naturally renewable building products available, and the only energy it requires to manufacture it comes from the sun. You can't get much more green than that. To learn more about wood, download free doit-yourself project plans and podcasts, check out some inspirational photos, download the Authentic Deck Guide and much more, please visit www.realoutdoorliving. com.

Moving Daylight (MS) -- Windows are a great way to bring light into the home, but unfortunately walls and doors often stop that light from moving throughout the house. To continue daylight's natural flow in the home, designer Sherry Mitchell, IIDA, recommends incorporating acrylic block panels, door inserts and partition walls throughout rooms in the house. "Daylight adds energy and warmth to a home, so why stop it from penetrating the entire house?" says Mitchell. "I've specified Hy-Lite/U S Block Window acrylic block products for many projects when homeowners desire natural light in hallways and interior rooms. These lightweight products add a decorative style to the interior of the home while promoting the flow of light." In addition to brightening the interior of the home, moving daylight through the house can also help save on energy bills. The natural lighting
that comes into the home through energy-efficient windows can reduce the use of electric lights in the home's interior, thus saving on energy costs. Mitchell believes the addition of "positive diffused daylight" into the home can be achieved with acrylic block products that help reduce homeowner energy needs while also protecting the privacy of the home's occupants. "You can have an acrylic block door insert in a home office that keeps the room private but allows the light to softly diffuse into the hallway," says Mitchell. "I've also seen room dividers created out of acrylic block panels that provide a distinct barrier between the dining room and kitchen, but still allows natural light to flow through." For more information on acrylic block windows, walls, door inserts and other decorative items in the home, visit www.hy-lite.com.
Recycled Soda Bottles Stop Weeds and Save Money (MS) -- The popular conservation mantra Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle finds root in your grandmother's sage advice -- "Waste not. Want not." In the early 20th century, conservation and waste minimization were not social movements. They were necessities. Ten years into the 21st century, the wisdom and benefit of conservation is back in the forefront of American thought. The lagging economy has many people questioning how they can cut costs. A big hit to the home budget comes in maintaining a lush landscape. It is a great irony that keeping up green spaces can take a heavy toll on wallets as well as the environment. Expenditures in the war on weeds are often high in time and money. Nobody wants weeds poking up their ugly heads up in the yard. Something has to be done! The battle often turns to an expensive and deadly assault with chemical weapons. The herbicides may knock out weeds, but they also punch the pocketbook and introduce damaging elements to the environment. There is a less expensive, more efficient, eco-friendly method for maintaining landscapes. Use landscape fabric. It is the secret to low-maintenance, chemical-free shrub and flower beds. Breathable fabrics like new Commercial WeedBlock(R) Recycled block sunlight and prevent seed germination. If the weeds can't germinate, they

can't grow. Then gardeners don't have to squander time pulling them or spend money on herbicides for spraying them. Commercial WeedBlock(R) Recycled is a heavy-duty landscape fabric made from 100% recycled 2-liter plastic soda bottles. The ecofriendly fabric can be found in garden supply and retail stores or by calling 1-800-EASY-INC. Visit www.easygardener.com for more information. It takes 27 bottles to make one roll, so using this fabric reduces waste by keeping plastic out of overflowing landfills. A landscape fabric like Commercial WeedBlock Recycled also helps conserve water. The thin layer of pervious fabric slows surface evaporation and safeguards soil moisture. Using landscape fabric is easy. Simply prepare the landscape bed, roll out fabric and spread over plants, cut an X shape in the fabric above plants, and pull the fabric down. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch over the fabric, and it will provide weed protection for years to come. Switching from chemical weed control to a landscape fabric made from recycled bottles may seem like a small change, but it makes a large impact in the long run. Your grandmother's "Waste not. Want not" mentality just may be the best way to weather the latest economic downturn and protect the planet.

Decorative paint a wallpaper alternative

CAROLE FELDMAN Associated Press Writer Elaine Griffin is crazy about stripes — in small rooms and kids' rooms, powder rooms and halls. She also likes glazes and metallics. Stencils, too. Decorative and faux painting is back, although in a subtler style than the "Dallas" and "Dynasty" days of the 1970s. "We overdid it then," said Griffin, a New York decorator, designer and contributor to Better Homes and Gardens magazine. Bonnie Roberts-Burke, a real estate agent, had 80 feet of stripes painted in her 100-year-old Washington town house. They start in the living room, go up the stairs and all the way down the hallway on the second floor. "It pulls it all together," she said. The stripes — each 5 inches wide — are of the same creamy blush beige color, but alternate between satin and flat finishes. "It just makes the most interesting patterns," she said. "It changes as the light in the house changes." Roberts-Burke said it gives the house an elegant feel. Her husband, David Burke, finds it warm and calming. The couple hired a professional to paint their stripes. Griffin said many homeowners try decorative and faux painting themselves; "civilian painters," she calls them. Paint and glazes can be used to create a marbled look, textured effect or a wood finish. With them, you can produce patterns that rival — or even surpass — what is available in wallpaper. Faux painting simulates nature and makes a surface look like something else — "making a plain door look like cherry or a plain plaster column look like marble," says Tracy McGranaghan, a decorative painter with studios in Annapolis, Md. "Decorative painting," she said, "is creating patterns and color dimensionally on walls and surfaces." It's not just walls that are being painted creatively. Furniture and cabinetry, even floors and ceilings, also are fair game. Meghan Carter, who runs
the Web site AsktheDecorator. com, said painting the ceiling a color other than white can produce a more intimate feeling, especially in rooms with "abnormally tall ceilings." "Paint is a wonderful thing because it's instant gratification," McGranaghan said. "In a very short time, you can completely transform a space." Faux finishes can add depth and dimension to a surface. "It's all about subtlety, not so much knock-you-in-the-head drama," she said. It also makes the walls more durable, said Gary Lord, a decorative painter and teacher in Cincinnati. "It hides a multitude of sins and you can get it customized just for your own particular taste and color." That customization is key for people who choose faux and decorative painting. Often the color in wallpaper is just not right. Or the pattern is too big or too small. Or it repeats too often. Or maybe they're looking for a less expensive alternative to wallpaper. cont. on page 6

Wallpaper Alternative For faux and decorative painting, the first step is putting on a base coat. Glazes, washes or patterns go on top of that. There's a positive technique for applying glazes or washes: Apply the color with a sponge, rag or other tool and leave it there. In the negative technique, you put the glaze or wash on the wall and then extract it, using a sponge or other tool. Griffin said professionals tend to choose the negative technique because it looks better; amateurs go for the positive technique because it's easier, she said. Among the many types of faux finishes, according to Better Homes and Gardens: —Sponging: Dip a wet sea sponge into glaze and press it on the wall. The glaze also can be applied to the wall and then lifted in patterns using the sponge. It creates almost a marbleized effect. —Ragging: Press a rag against a wall in which a glaze already has been applied, removing some of the paint. This will create a textured appearance. —Strie: Move a brush vertically over a wall to created a striped effect, either applying the glaze with the brush or removing some of it as you work. —Stippling: Use a brush to create the appearance of little dots. "That's when you put on the base coat and put on a glaze and pounce with it," Griffin said. Wood graining also is popular, McGranaghan said, as is the use of Venetian plaster, which results in a marbled look. She also paints patterns — "things that almost look like wallpaper" — on walls, cabi-

she said. "You can put them on and take them off." Before starting any decorative or faux painting project, Lord recommends that doit-yourselfers educate
themselves. There's a wealth of resources, in the library and on the Internet. YouTube has many free how-to videos. And if you make a
mistake? "People get so apoplectic about color," Griffin said. "Color is the easiest thing to fix. If you don't like it, just paint over it."

Install a Pool Now for Summer Fun Pool retailers generally can install a pool any time of the year. However, the early spring season just may be the ideal time if you've decided to enhance a yard with an above-ground or inground pool. The spring season means the ground is likely thawed and it will be reasonably comfortable for workers (or yourself) to set up the pool. A spring starting point also means that your pool and surrounding patios/landscaping will be completed before the peak swimming season. Also, you will have the entire season to enjoy your new pool. If you've decided on an inground pool, something that adds appeal and beauty to a yard, there are a few steps that will take place in the poolinstallation process. 1. You will sit down with a pool professional and decide on the shapes, styles and materials of choice that meet your budget and the size of your yard. Keep in mind maximizing the sun by placing the pool where you'll get the most rays. 2. Prior to excavation, workers will come and map out the pool in your yard. They'll plan for filters/equipment, the shape of the pool and any surrounding structures, such as a patio or deck. 3. The excavation will then take place after the pool design is approved. Construction equipment and hand-shoveling to work on the finer details is likely part of the process. It may take a day or two to dig the pool, provided the soil is amenable. 4. Wired steel rods are installed in the pool area that has been cleared away. This will provide support for the frame and protect against ground forces. 5. The electrical and plumbing groundwork will be laid, including wiring for the pump and filter and pipes to filter the water. 6. Aspecial concrete mixture is sprayed over the steel frame to lock it in place and provide extra strength. Depending on the pool interior surface used, this will also provide the groundwork for other materials to be installed. 7. Tile, masonry, rock, and/or a vinyl liner will be installed. The pool will start to have a finished look. 8. Surrounding materials, such as landscaping, decking, concrete, or patio pavers can be installed at this point. 9. Personal touches will complete the look of your pool. Afterward, you simply fill the water level and start enjoying the swimming pool once the weather is right. You may be able to pay municipal water services to come and fill your pool via a water tank truck. Some towns allow usage of fire hydrant water if approved by the fire department. Otherwise, you may need to go the slow and steady route of using your backyard hose. There are some things to consider when deciding on a pool. * If price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Some companies advertise below-market rates on pools and then up-sell a lot of extras. Compare prices and go with the company that seems the most reputable. * Definitely ask for testimonials on the work done before hiring a pool company. Or, ask friends and neighbors about their pool experiences and what companies they recommend. * The price of the pool may vary based on the quality of materials used, the soil conditions and amount of rock content, and any warranties included with the pool installation. * Companies have become expert at working within the restraints of smaller backyards. Don't rule out a pool simply because your yard is on the small side. * To make your pool unique, consider adding extra features such as waterfalls, jump rocks, tanning ledges, fountains, and more. * The average cost of an inground pool varies among regions. However, it's safe to estimate that a basic inground pool will be around $20,000. You may be able to use the equity in your home and take advantage of low interest rates to finance a pool.
