THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016 7
2016 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Welcome to
the Players!
THE PLAYERS Championship is a showcase of excellence, with the strongest field and the purest test in golf. It is rich in history with the very best fan experience. With those elements combined, THE PLAYERS is the ultimate showcase of Northeast Florida, as 1 billion households worldwide receive the tournament broadcast each year. The competition only lasts one week, but preparation for THE PLAYERS is a year-long endeavor that involves the tireless work of PGA TOUR staff, dozens of local and national vendors, hundreds of area charities and thousands of volunteers – all coming together to produce our area’s most exciting and treasured event. THE PLAYERS is so much more than just great golf – it is the social event of the year as well as an economic engine for our community and a major benefactor to local charities. Proceeds from THE PLAYERS benefit Northeast Florida charities and have totaled more than $75 million since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, including a record $8.1 million generated in 2015. In April 2011, THE PLAYERS announced a new charitable focus, committing to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over the next 10 years. That goal is only attainable with the support of local companies and individual ticket buyers. Each year we strive to make THE PLAYERS better than the year 8 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
before. That starts with enhancing the experience for our spectators. As you will see in the coming pages, we are adding new fan-friendly venues, showcasing local restaurants, highlighting a unique charity each day and offering affordable deals that the entire community can enjoy. And, as always, career military personnel and their dependents, as well as all children 18 or younger (with a ticketed adult!), get in for free. One of our key messages this year will be focused on fans purchasing and downloading their parking passes in advance. THE PLAYERS is the place to be and be seen May 10-15. I encourage you to bring your friends, family and colleagues to Golf ’s Greatest Stadium and witness history this May. See you at THE PLAYERS.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016 13
Rickie Fowler was a most unexpected winner at last year’s Players. He started the week answering questions about a Sports Illustrated survey of PGA Tour players that voted Fowler and Ian Poulter as “the most overrated” on the tour. The topic persisted, despite the fact that he was on the leaderboard on Friday and Saturday. “I think it may have been a big story line media-wise or outside, but it was something that was pretty laughable from the players’ side looking in, especially on mine,” Fowler said during media day for the 2016 Players. “I think I was ranked 10th in the world at the time. Yeah, they really nailed that poll.” That was the atmosphere a year ago heading into what would become one of the most exciting finishes in tournament history since Deane Beman and Pete Dye were pushed into the lake at 18 by Jerry Pate. Fowler played well the first two rounds and felt that someone could potentially shoot 6-, 7-, or 8-under on the weekend and get into contention. “It’s a course where if you’re not on top of your game, it will show it, but if you are playing well and ball striking is there, you can get after it a bit,” he said, adding that most of the time he played the course well. “You can’t really look past anything. Really, at any time, you make a bad swing at the wrong time, you’re making bogey, double or maybe worse.” By the end of Saturday, however, he had fallen back. His mother and sister had planned to stay if it looked like he had a chance for victory, but even they deemed him too far behind to win. They headed to the airport after his front nine on Sunday. a Continued from page 14 During the final round, nothing was happening for Fowler until the 12th hole where he made a par save that seemed to change his attitude for the rest of the day. “A lot of guys hit a hybrid or a 3-wood off the tee, and I hit 3-wood that day,” he recalled. “I hung it out to the right a little bit, hit a tree, and it came back into the bunker.” He did not have a good lie. It was up to its equator in sand. “We debated just blasting the ball out in the fairway, trying to wedge it on and make par. The pin was in the front so it’s not exactly good if you end up just short of the green. It’s a tough up-and-down,” he added. “Somehow I thought of hitting kind of a bladed punch shot, came out perfect, kind of low, a little bit of spin, ended up in the middle of the green. If I didn’t pull off that shot, then I wouldn’t have had a chance to do what I did.” By Fowler’s recollection, he played 60 to 90 minutes ahead of the leaders’ tee times. They would have been still on the front nine when he completed the 12th. He had six holes to play and he was behind. He made a birdie at 13, one of the tough par threes. He was still four shots back of Sergio Garcia. “Coming to the last four holes, at that point I was like, all right, we can birdie the last four, and maybe that gives us a chance,” he explained. He birdied 15. At 5:09 Fowler was in the 16th fairway, the par five, with 239 yards to the flag. He was at 10-under par, thanks to his two birdies. And Sergio Garcia was still leading, although at 11-under par, and Ben

Martin was tied with Fowler at 10-under, both of them several holes behind Fowler. In the 16th fairway, Fowler faced a slight downhill lie and gripped down on a 3-wood. “The ball kind of sits above your feet here,” Fowler explained about that lie. “Typically that’s going to make the ball go to the left, if you make somewhat of a normal swing. That day the wind was in off the left, so it’s not exactly an easy shot. Luckily earlier in the week I was hitting some choked-down kind of softer 3-woods on No. 8 because it was playing into the wind.” (Eight is a par three.) Fowler was originally aiming for a palm tree behind the green at 16, and he expected the wind to bring it to the middle of the green. “In a perfect world it would catch the slope, to go towards the hole,” he said. “I hit it solid. The biggest thing was going to be if it cleared and stay far enough left to not go in the water.” It did not look good when it started drifting right. But Fowler got lucky with the wind. It pushed the ball but not too far. The ball landed between the hole and the bulkhead, six feet from the cup. He made it for eagle. “Luckily I finally got a good break here, because I’ve been in that water too many times,” he noted. “So from this hole on, it was playing to win. It wasn’t just trying to get a good finish.” Fowler said when he hit his second shot on 16, he did not think of others, like Fred Couples or Davis Love III, who had made eagle at 16 and gone on to win. He was just focused on what he had to do and made it. Then he gathered himself for the island hole. Fans shouted and chanted his name as he made the long walk from 16 green to 17 tee.

a Continued from page 16 “I’ve seen plenty of highlights where the balls ended up in the water. My goal when I’ve played this hole the past few years is really just staying dry,” he said about the most in-your-face green at TPC Sawgrass. “Luckily having good numbers and playing this hole well over the years, I’ve been able to kind of build confidence and look at this hole when it’s not too windy.” As unlikely at it seemed, he birdied it. Perhaps that was an omen for the rest of the day. “I knew where the guys were at, but the hard part was they had a lot of holes to play,” he explained. “All I could really control was getting in the house as quick as I could and posting a number.” After birdie at the 17th, he faced the 18th, which, according to the PGA Tour is traditionally one of the most difficult holes on the course, primarily because it has water all along the left side. While amateurs fear water, pros fear left on any hole, but when it has water, that raises their anxiety level. Historically, Fowler’s played 18 the worst of any hole on tour in his career. Yet, he stepped up and smashed the second longest drive of the final round, 331 yards. “I’d been driving it well all week. I hit driver here every day. The only reason my drives were past the average is because a lot of guys hit 3-woods here for the most part, so that’s why the average is back, and rightfully so,” he explained. He added that there was some assistance from the wind. He thought that birdie at 18 might be good enough for victory. But with good players behind him, it would be hard to predict what they could do. As difficult as it is to birdie the 18th, he managed to roll in a 17-footer. Then he had to wait. Garcia made birdie at 16 by two-putting from 70 feet. He made a
18 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
miraculous birdie at the 17th and missed a 20-footer for birdie at 18, which would have given him his second Players title. Ben Martin hit right into the trees on 18 and missed a par putt, and he fell out of contention. Kisner birdied 16 and made a 10-footer on 17 for another birdie. At 18, he faced another birdie putt, and again it was a 10-footer for birdie, which would have given him the outright victory. When he missed, he was in a three-way tie with Garcia and Fowler. For the first time ever at The Players, there would be a three-hole, aggregate-score playoff. It would be contested over 16, 17 and 18. Fans waited with glee, especially at the 16th and 17th. At the end of the aggregate playoff, Fowler and Kisner were still tied, but Garcia did not match them, and the past champ bowed out. So, at 7:47 p.m. Fowler and Kisner headed to the sudden death hole, No. 17, because they had to break the tie. So small, but so pivotal. The 17th is the essence of an in-your-face challenge. Many a golfer has met his demise there. “The three times that we played it (on Sunday), the wind was different every time,” Fowler explained. “In regulation it was down a little off the right. First playoff, was straight down, and then the last, was actually down off the left. That’s the reason why all three balls ended up at different spots, but they’re actually all aimed at the same spot.” His intended line was over the bunker, and he was trying to hit it just left of the hole. He did that in regulation landing the shot 6’10”. In the first playoff, he was beyond the hole, 6’5”, because of the change in the wind. In the sudden death playoff, because the wind was a little off the Continued on page 20 s

a Continued from page 18 left, the ball went right of the flag, perilously close to the water. He was not aiming there. But it landed close to the hole and dry. “Of the three putts here, that was the hardest to make, he admitted. “I hadn’t really hit a putt from there before. It was kind of a tough read. It was just 4’8. “The last thing I thought of was, ‘Just hit a good putt,’ he said. “I knew people were expecting me to make it. I know I can make the putt, but the last thing you want to do is screw it up.
Was he nervous? “There’s not one guy that plays professional golf that doesn’t get nervous, especially standing on the first tee, any tournament, especially majors, especially here, Fowler acknowledged. “When you’re going for par-5s in two, you get nervous. But I think it’s more you’re excited about the moment. Not too nervous to make the birdie putt, though, and when it dropped, the crowd erupted, sharing his joy. Rickie Fowler had sealed his biggest victory and capped one of the most exciting finishes in the history of The Players.

by Jennifer Logue
As the golf world gears up for THE PLAYERS Championship, officials are hoping that a slew of improvements and new spectator offerings will help them achieve what some believe may be impossible: surpassing last year’s tournament. “We’re going to have a tough time topping last year’s finish and last year’s weather,” THE PLAYERS Championship Executive Director
24 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
Matt Rapp said. “Many people have called it the best finish ever in a professional golf tournament.” Rapp was referring to 2015 champion Rickie Fowler’s dramatic victory that saw him make four birdies and an eagle on his last six holes. As part of the preparations for this year’s championship, Fowler Continued on page 26 s

a Continued from page 24 recently took local media on a tour of the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course and walked them through his climactic finish at the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. “It’s gonna be fun to relive the memories again when I’m back here for the (2016) tournament,” Fowler said, noting that he was looking forward to eating at TacoLu while in town for THE PLAYERS. “That’s my spot to feel like a local,” Fowler quipped. aBUILT WITH FANS IN MINDs Building on last year’s success, officials said, THE PLAYERS has made a variety of improvements designed to enhance the spectator experience. In addition to adding a new paved cart path to the popular 4th hole, the 4th tee box has been lowered four feet in order offer better views. Double-decker viewing stands at the legendary 17th hole “island green” are also expected to be popular with fans. “That’s going to be a game changer for us,” Rapp said. The Stadium Course is unique, Rapp noted, in that it was “built with the fans in mind.” “Most golf courses are built as golf courses,” he said. “This course was built to host large crowds where you can see any golfer on any hole, so it has inherent advantages no other course has.” It’s also a challenging course. “This course tests every club in your bag, so players really need to bring their A game,” he said. “You don’t see too many repeat champions here like you do at other courses.” On the culinary front, THE PLAYERS has added a variety of new restaurants to its lineup, including Mojo Kitchen and Ponte Vedra Beach’s popular new eatery Trasca & Co. The new William Hill Wine Lounge on the 8th green, meanwhile, will serve up a selection of premium wines for PLAYERS spectators.
For fans who want to stock up on PLAYERS merchandise, officials said, this year’s tournament will feature both an expanded merchandise center behind the 17th hole and a new location at the 18th landing. And for those fans who can’t wait until tournament week to get their goods, online shopping is available in advance at ThePlayersChampionship.com. aPARKING CHANGESs This year’s tournament will also feature a number of changes designed to ease traffic and parking issues. In addition to creating new walk paths, all of the ingress roads to the parking lots have been paved, officials said – an improvement they anticipate will expedite entry and exit from the lots. Unlike in years past, parking passes will not be sold at Publix; all passes for the 2016 PLAYERS must be purchased online and in advance. Officials encouraged spectators to make their PLAYERS plans early and get their passes online now – noting that free parking will be available to carpool groups of four people or more. Shuttles will also once again operate from downtown to THE PLAYERS in an effort to ease traffic on A1A. aTIME TO SHINEs Rapp thanked the thousands of volunteers who help make THE PLAYERS Championship happen each year, noting that since the tournament moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, it has donated some $75 million to local charities while also showcasing the community to the world. “When does Northeast Florida get to showcase itself better than PLAYERS week?” Rapp asked. “Nothing else on the First Coast gets as much exposure and stands for excellence as THE PLAYERS does.”

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016 29
2016 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Gang’s all here... Rory, Rickie, Jason, Jordan, Bubba, DJ, Adam, Phil and more
There’s no way around it. All the golfers you want to see, except two, are going to be at The Players 2016. Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson and more. Missing with injuries are Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk and there’s an outside chance Furyk may be golf ready by then. With such glittering stars, it’s really an embarrassment of riches for any golf fan. Plus TPC Sawgrass is a course designed for you, the golf fan. You can actually see your favorites here. Here’s a recap of what these stars have done recently:
aRORY MCILROYs Though surprisingly winless so far in the United States this year, McIlroy’s won plenty in the past 12 months including The Race to Dubai and the DP World Tour Championship on the European Tour. Last summer he
was hampered by an ankle injury he received while playing soccer. It caused him to miss the British Open. His return to the PGA and the Fed Ex playoffs was perhaps sooner than he would have liked, but he gutted it out. That he was able to continue to play some of the final events in the Race to Dubai and win that year-long contest shows his level of talent. At the WGC Cadillac Championship in March, McIlroy changed his putting style to cross-handed, sometimes called left hand low. “I felt like my right hand was becoming a little bit too active in the stroke,” he said about the change. “This is a perfect way to sort of deactivate that, and I really just feel like I’m controlling the putting stroke with my left hand only.” His biggest concern is he didn’t want people to think he was copying Jordan Spieth who uses that style all the time. In his first outings using the left hand low method, he finished 3rd, T27 and 4th. What keeps McIlroy in contention, however, is ball control, which he fine tunes with Trackman. “I always have felt like my ball-striking and my driving and iron play

has been the strongest part of my game and in that way, my putting has not necessarily needed to be as strong,” he said recently. “At the same time, you’re going to have weeks where your ball-striking isn’t as good and it’s always nice to have that backup there if you need it with your scrambling and your putting. It’s about finding a balance.” When McIlroy’s putting is on, look out.
aRICKIE FOWLERs Last year’s champ has clearly mastered the denizens of TPC Sawgrass. He has already won in 2016, at the Abu Dhabi event earlier this season, and he lost in a playoff at the Waste Management Open. Fowler’s top fives in all last year’s majors and his victory at The Players show that he has a top-level game. “I think for my confidence, my belief in myself has definitely changed,” he said about his more recent victories. “Knowing that I can go out and compete with the best players in the world, and just having that belief in myself is nice to have and nice to have that confidence.” Fowler still has his sights set on knocking off golfers above him in the world rankings. “Still a lot more work that needs to be done if I want to overtake the guys that are in front of me, guys that have obviously played very
well, major champions, and they are not going to go the other way,” he noted. “I’m going to have to play better than them.” If Fowler were to repeat as champ, he would be the first back-toback winner. Since The Players moved to TPC Sawgrass, no one has been able to do that. Five golfers have won twice, however: Steve Elkington, Hal Sutton, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Tiger Woods. While everyone says when is he going to win a major, hey, didn’t he already win one? The Players.
aJASON DAYs Jason Day overtook Jordan Spieth as No.1 in the world with two victories in a row, at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Dell Match Play. With drives that bomb 350 yards on a regular basis, a solid short game and an improved putting stroke, the question is not will he win, but who can keep him from winning. Day broke the major championship scoring record at last summer’s PGA by getting to 20-under par when he took that title for his first major championship. Those who watched him play a few years ago wondered, honestly, why it took him so long. It was clear to everybody with eyes that Day had an exceptional game. But golfers mature at their own pace, not Continued on page 32 s
THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016 31
a Continued from page 31 ours. “I can’t get complacent with how I’m playing right now,” Day said after his victory at the Dell Match Play. “I’ve got to make sure I get in and do the little things that count towards the big picture.” His victory last summer at Whistling Straits means two things. One, he can handle the hardest pressure in golf. Two he can bring down a Pete Dye golf course. And he did it again at the Dell Match Play, another Pete Dye design. It would be hard not to make him a favorite at TPC Sawgrass. The only downside for Day at The Players is that his 350 plus yard drives will not work on all the holes. That length is longer than No. 12, for instance. And 350 yards on No. 4 is probably in the water somewhere. But on the par fives – Nos. 2, 9, 11 and 16 – he should be a lock for birdie or better. No. 7 should turn into an easy driver-wedge for him. With Day’s 20-under par scoring at Whistling Straits, the question may actually be are we finally going to see Greg Norman’s tournament record of 24-under par fall?
aJORDAN SPIETHs Spieth had a Cinderfella season in 2015, winning the Masters and U.S. Open and having chances at the British Open and PGA, plus his other victories and the end of season triumph at the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. His challenge has been
to be able to continue to play at that level, although he did win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions already this season. In March he was working on his backswing which he said had gotten short. He wasn’t getting to parallel and it messed with his timing. “I’ve been trying to just really load more and get more patient into my backswing. And it’s tough to trust a lot – a lot of times, because it feels like you’re going to hit it out to the right,” he said. “Enough repetitions, and it starts to straighten out and you gain trust. But it’s something that’s weird that doesn’t get off very often.” In his second season on tour, Spieth finished second at The Players, so perhaps he has some unfinished business in Ponte Vedra. Through March, he said he had been trying to regain his 2015 self. His caddie told him recently that the difference in recent events and the 2015 majors was that last year he had more respect for the golf course, and didn’t take too many unnecessary chances, He just let the opportunities come to him. He’s now making an effort to respect the courses more.
aDUSTIN JOHNSONs Johnson has won a tournament every year that he’s played on the PGA Tour except one. And in 2010 and 2013, he won twice. Like Jason Day and Bubba Watson, Johnson is other-worldly long off the tee and with the rest of his shots as well. He nearly won last year’s U.S.

a Continued from page 32 Open, which was captured by Jordan Spieth. Known as an excellent driver, Johnson said, “I work on that every day, trying to hit it straighter. I think everybody does. When I’m swinging well, I drive it straight.” The impressive thing is that he’s far and straight. “One of the reasons that I am as good as I am is I hit it far, but I also hit it pretty straight,” he said earlier this season. “When I play well, I drive it well.” How good is his length? He was the first player in Masters history to make three eagles in a round. The scoring came on the par fives, naturally, and happened in round two in 2015. The only par five he did not eagle was the 13th. Johnson said earlier this year that the key to his distance is to just hit the drive solid. He and Lexi Thompson would make one heck of a mixed-team couple should the LPGA decide to bring back that event.
aBUBBA WATSONs Watson can strangle a course with his length and talent when he wants to. He just has to feel right about it. He won the Tiger Woods Hero World Challenge last December and the Northern Trust Open this year. He was second at the WGC Cadillac Championship on a very big and demanding golf course. He’s so long, he could almost play TPC Sawgrass with his
34 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
irons and still be under par. Yet it’s not user friendly for him. “When I look down No.1 and No.10, just to give you an example, when you look down those, it’s hard to tell the fairway and the rough. It all kind of blends in together,” he explained a couple years ago. “I don’t like to look at a tree and aim at a tree. I like to see the lay of the land and that’s how I hit my shots. So it’s very difficult when you look at a golf course like that. It makes it difficult for me.” He’s right. Pete Dye designs are all about visual distraction and tricks of the eye. What you see may not be what you get. There may be hidden things. Then again, there are in-your-face things, like the 17th. “I think I’ve played it well over par,” he said about the island hole. “I’ve hit sand wedge over the green. I really don’t miss it left and right, I miss it long or short. Over the last couple years I’ve played it a little bit better, a little bit more consistent, trying to get used to the adrenaline.” Watson said the 17th is great for fans. “It’s not really a risk reward, it’s too short for that,” he insisted. “The fans are going to have some cheers, they’re going to have some boos, they’re going to have some oohs and awws. I think it’s a great hole. But walking there, you’re trying to check the wind, you’re trying to think about the wind, what you’ve hit before there, where is the flag, are you going to play safe, is the wind favorable for attacking.” He said it was really no different than any golf hole. He also said water at TPC Sawgrass doesn’t intimidate him. “There’s a lot of water on a lot of golf courses. It’s not because of that,” he said. “Just like if you were walking to 18 tee, 18 tee is just as tough as 17, so you’re thinking the same thing: Where is the pin,
which way is the wind coming. So you’re still thinking the same thing as any other golf hole.” It’s more than one hole and the visuals that bother Watson at TPC Sawgrass. “Chipping and putting around here is really difficult because when you’re chipping around here, it’s into the grain, and it’s real grainy around here. So if you’re not careful, the grass will stand up, and it makes you look like you’ve never chipped before in your life,” he said, obviously a past victim of the gnarly Bermudagrass. His one-word description of TPC Sawgrass: mean. But if he wins, he says he’ll think it’s a great course.

aADAM SCOTTs Scott won two in a row in March, at the Honda Classic and the WGC Cadillac Championship. He’s a past champ at The Players, and a few very good players have two victories here. No one has won three on TPC Sawgrass, although Jack Nicklaus has won the event three times. They were all before TPC Sawgrass opened. This is Scott’s first full season without the anchored putter, and despite rumors that he would not be able to compete without the long wand, he has shown that his putting stroke is not at all

a Continued from page 35 fragile. Back-to-back victories at two tough courses prove it. Scott’s looking to get back to the No. 1 ranking. “Sometimes when you’re starting further down the list, you’re more driven to kind of get back up the top, and I’m kind of on that path again like I was maybe a few years ago,” he said. “I think I’ve just got to keep doing the same things, keep the level of intensity up out on the golf course.” Greg Norman, the 1994 Players champ was Scott’s inspiration to start playing golf. “He was the best player in the world, and he was a huge icon in Australian sports,” Scott said. “I think if you ask anyone 10 years older than me or 10 years younger than me, you might get the same answer, that Greg Norman was their inspiration.”
aPHIL MICKLESONs With 42 PGA Tour victories, including five major championships and The Players and nine more titles around the world, Mickelson is the veteran with the mostest during Players week. He’s won nearly everything there is to win, except a U.S. Open, and goodness knows he’s had numerous close calls there and is still trying. “I’m striking the ball better than I
have in a long time. I feel good on and around the greens. I just feel like it was a good start to the year,” he said recently. “Hopefully I’ll be able to get better and better. I’m excited.” This season, Mickelson has seemed rejuvenated due to a return to a swing that he had when he was younger. He says it’s allowing him to hit more fairways and to be more competitive. Early in the year, he played six out of seven tournaments, which is unusual for him, because he was trying to groove his swing. And he was in contention several times during that stretch. “It’s fun to be back playing well. It’s fun to be hitting shots the way I know I can hit them. It has been very frustrating not doing that,” he said. “I know that victory will be – it’s close, it will happen. As soon as I don’t force the issue, it will come. But more than that, it’s just fun to be playing good golf.” Mickelson is so good, he won while he was still in college. Only six other amateurs have won professional tour events: Scott Verplank (Western Open), Doug Sanders (Canadian Open), Gene Littler (San Diego Open), Freddie Haas (Memphis), Bobby Jones (U.S. Open and British Open) and Francis Ouimet (U.S. Open), but Jones and Francis Ouimet stayed lifetime amateurs. One thing Mickelson he has never had trouble with is his short game, and so, should he happen to fall into one of Pete Dye’s many swales or hollows or sandy places, you can be certain that nobody can make a better play to get out of a predicament than Mickelson. His resume is the type of those who have won more than one Players, so depending on how he’s feeling, Mickelson has all the shots he needs to win.

2016 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
These guys are good at more than golf by Kathy Bissell
As most every golf fan knows, Tiger Woods has a charitable foundation which supports learning centers at after-school programs for grades 5-12 in Anaheim, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Stuart, Fla., and Marine Base Quantico. According to the foundation, they have reached 145,000 children with their project-based learning programs, which encourage learning in science, technology and math. The majority of money raised for Woods’ foundation comes through the sponsorship of PGA Tour event partners at the Quicken Loans National, the Hero World Challenge, and now the new event at Riviera Country Club sponsored by Hyundai, replacing what was the Northern Trust Open. In addition, Woods holds Tiger Jam in Las Vegas. What most people don’t see is the myriad of other charitable giving that goes on with PGA Tour players outside PGA Tour events. Even newly minted superstar Jordan Spieth recently created a foundation to help special needs children – a cause he understands because his sister, Ellie, has special needs. The amount of charity work being done by players all over the country and world is staggering, to be honest. It’s time to give these guys some credit for what they are doing outside of the PGA Tour. What follows just scratches the surface.
aERNIE ELSs On March 7, Rickie Fowler made a hole-in-one at the Cigar Aficionado-Wine Spectator Pro-Am at Old Palm Golf Club. Pandemonium ensued. That’s because the shot was worth $1 million to Els for Autism. Ernie Els, a 6-foot-4 guy, was so excited that he 38 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
picked up the 5-foot-9 Fowler. The crowd went crazy, including typically subdued PGA Tour players. Fowler didn’t get a dime. His reward was knowing he had made a big contribution to a charity just by doing what he does best: playing golf. Els for Autism, which was started by Ernie and Liezel Els, receives the proceeds from their tournaments. The events have already allowed their foundation to purchase acreage in Palm Beach County, where they have built the first phase of the Els Center for Excellence, a special school for autistic children. As the parents of an autistic son, they discovered that other people were in the same situation. Because of their celebrity, they knew they could do something, and so they did. They want to expand the center so that more children can get the kind of education and care that they need, and so the pro-ams continue. It’s a lifelong cause for them. (www.elsforautism.com) There are typically 20 or more Els for Autism golf events each year. PGA Tour players who participated at this particular one were Thomas Aiken, Keegan Bradley, K.J. Choi, Luke Donald, Jason Dufner, Ian Baker Finch, Raymond Floyd, Fowler, Lucas Glover, Retief Goosen, Brooks Koepka, Will MacKenzie, Will McGirt, Rory McIlroy, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman, Louis Oosthuizen, Nick Price, Rory Sabbatini, Jordan Spieth and Cameron Tringale. Els was on hand as host. The Els for Autism event is just one of hundreds, perhaps even thousands of examples of the charitable work that PGA Tour professionals do to raise money for causes that are important to them or their communities. And it’s in addition to whatever money is contributed to various charities by the many PGA Tour, PGA Tour
Champions and Web.com Tour events each year. Literally untold sums have been raised over the years, all over the country and all over the world.
aRICKIE FOWLERs Fowler, who had the ace at the Els for Autism event, has lent his support to other causes, too. Last fall, after his victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship, he was named an ambassador for PGA Junior League Golf. Started by the PGA of America, The PGA Junior League Golf program introduces boys and girls ages 13 and under to the game in a recreational team setting. It is a national program that had 30,000 boys and girls playing on 2,500 teams in 2015 – up from 17,500 on 1,425 teams in 2014. It’s only a few years old. To say that it’s a great grow-the-game program is an understatement. “Rickie Fowler represents everything PGA Junior League Golf is about,” said PGA of America President Derek Sprague. “He is a tremendous role model for kids, as he embodies youth, passion, integrity and a great honor for the game.” Already named ambassadors are Lexi Thompson, Michelle Wie and Rory McIlroy. (www.PGAJLG.com) But pros like Fowler and Els are just the tip of the charity iceberg.
aRORY MCILROYs In 2013 Rory McIlroy came up with an idea to help six charities with a concept he called Six Bags. He got new Nike golf bags and put Continued on page 40 s

the logo of a different charity on each of them. After he played with a bag in a tournament, he auctioned it off via the Rory Foundation website. All the proceeds went to the charities. Bag One was used at the Abu Dhabi Championship, and charity Cancer Fund for Children in Northern Ireland. Bag Two was in the WGC- Accenture Match Play Championship, in Tucson, Arizona. The Boys & Girls Club of Tucson received funds from the online auction. Bag Three was played in the Honda Classic, and the benefiting organization was Child Protection Team of Palm Beach. Bag Four was in the WGC- Cadillac Championship at Doral, and The First Tee of Miami received auction proceeds. Bag Five came to the Shell Houston Open and the Chinquapin Preparatory School which provides college-preparatory education to able and motivated youth from low-income families in the greater Houston area. Bag Six was in the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, and the charity was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Rory Foundation has also committed £1 million to the Cancer Fund for Children over a period of four years to support the running of Daisy Lodge. Opened in April 2014 and the first of its kind in the UK and Ireland, Daisy Lodge will provide 500 families each year with a chance to relax and restore away from the hospital visits and the stress of cancer treatments. But that’s not all McIlroy does. By lending his name and hosting skills to the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, he was able to secure sponsorship for the tournament for three years. His foundation will continue to host the tournament in the years to come. The benefits are tremendous to tourism, with more than 100,000 visitors or attendees at the event. (Dubai Duty Free is an airport retailer.) (www. roryfoundation.com)
Phil and Amy Mickelson are big believers in charity. But the Mickelsons aren’t just charity supporters – they are founders. In 2005, the Mickelsons partnered with ExxonMobile to launch the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy. Already more than 4,500 teachers have participated, impacting more than 300,000 students nationwide. In 2006, they founded Birdies for the Brave. “Family is everything to Amy and me,” Mickelson said, “and this is our way of helping families in need stay together and grow strong even after the loss of a parent. Birdies for the Brave is an opportunity to salute the men and women who have given their lives on our behalf around the world and to let their families know their sacrifices won’t be forgotten.” They founded Birdies for the Brave in 2006. The Mickelson’s charitable organization (The Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation) contributes $100 per birdie and $500 per eagle to the Birdies for the Brave. (You can add up Mickelson’s birdies and eagles since 2006 if you want. It might make a good fourth or fifth grade math project – at least as I recall fourth and fifth grade math.) Underneath the Birdies for the Brave umbrella are several organizations that are supported by even more PGA Tour and PGA Tour Champions players. (We are certain that more players also support these great causes, and if someone was missed, we apologize in advance.) Special Operations Warrior Foundation (www.specialops.org) is also supported by Phil Mickelson. It provides full college scholarships to the surviving children of fallen special operations personnel and immediate financial assistance to wounded special operations

Watson helps raise money for the Green Beret Foundation because his father was a member of the United States Army Special Forces (Green Beret). At a recent Barrett-Jackson Auction, Watson sold a custom-built 1939 Cadillac LaSalle C-Hawk Custom Roadster for $410,000, with proceeds going to Birdies for the Brave. In 2012, Watson launched “Drive to a Million” to raise money for charities close to his heart. The campaign has raised more than $1.3 million. (www.bubbawatsongolf.com/charity). Some of the other charities Watson is affiliated with include The First Tee of Northwest Florida, Fresh Start, Birdies for the Brave and the Ronald McDonald House of Pensacola (Fla.) and Bright Pink.
AIDING YOUTH Several PGA Tour and former PGA Tour players have foundations that provide assistance to young golfers in different countries. Adam Scott established a foundation in Australia in 2005 with 100 percent of donations going to its various projects. Scott has created the Adam Scott Foundation Youth Centers which will provide support and guidance to young people in communities. The first center is in design. While that is in the works, there’s The Adam Scott Foundation Scholarship, which was started in 2008. Offered annually in Australia, Continued on page 48 s

Scott also has the Australia Education for Kids Program launched in 2009. It provides laptop computers to the children’s ward of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Australia. The always well-dressed Ian Poulter is more than a golfer and fashion designer. With the IJP Charitable Foundation, he focuses on two charities that work with children and his own charitable golf tournament, the Ian Poulter Invitational, which is for juniors. The first Poulter charity is DreamFlight, which takes seriously ill and disabled children on their “Holiday of a Lifetime” to theme parks in Central Florida. Since Poulter currently lives in Orlando and has children, he certainly knows about the parks. opportunity to experience competition at a high level. “I’m passionate about providing junior golfing talent a platform to develop their skills and experience playing a championship course under competitive conditions,” Poulter has said. “Opportunities like this weren’t available to me when I was growing up, and it’s a privilege to share this…with youngsters that have a genuine enthusiasm and commitment to the sport, and I’m always impressed by the standard of golf these girls and boys are playing.” Taking a page out of the Phil and Amy Mickelson playbook, Luke and Diane Donald have partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana in creating Birdies Fore the House to support the Ronald McDonald House in conjunction with corporate partners like Cargill, LazyBoy, Starwood and others. (www. rmhccni.org/lukesteam/). Donald was a part of the Ryder Cup Magnificent Moments campaign in 2012, when several artists created designs on huge golf balls displayed along Michigan Avenue and in other Chicago locations. LeRoy Neiman, an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, participated and Donald designed a golf ball in collaboration with recent Northwestern graduate Morgan Krehbiel. Their golf ball was called European Stars over Chicago. Neiman also contributed a golf ball design. Five of the balls, including Donald’s, were auctioned on ebay, with funds going to the Illinois PGA Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & Northwest Indiana. Donald also supports The First Tee, Habitat for Humanity in Palm Beach County and Northwestern University where he went to school. In addition to his work on the Els for Autism campaign, Ernie Els has the Fancourt Foundation in South Africa, the purpose of which is to identify and assist young South Africans from families of limited resources who show promise in the game of golf. It provides them
with educational assistance and opportunities to play. Those who were helped by the Fancourt Foundation include Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace, who recently won his first PGA Tour event. Australian Greg Norman is best known for his business interests, but he continues to support a number of charitable interests. He pays particular attention to CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, which hopes to end childhood cancer by driving targeted and innovative research. The charity is a beneficiary of the Franklin Templeton ShootOut hosted each December by Norman, who also supports several environmental and wildlife conservation causes and members of the military community. He is a major contributor to the Environmental Institute for Golf, part of the GCSAA. (www.curesearch.org) According to Jason Day, Norman’s junior events in Australia are important to the development of that country’s future golfers. “He’s done wonderful things for golf, especially back home in Australia,” Day said. “He doesn’t get enough credit for it. I remember playing in the Greg Norman Junior Foundation events. My first-ever big tournament I won was the Greg Norman Junior Foundation SubJunior Championships at Coolangatta and Tweed, and that was a big tournament that kind of propelled me going into playing more competitive golf. It got me onto the Greg Norman team – he had some part of me getting to where I’ve been.” One man has quietly supported junior golf all over the world for 20 years. That is Sir Nick Faldo. Faldo created The Faldo Series of golf tournaments to give youngsters in the far corners of the globe the opportunity to play in events. Of course, we cannot forget the two most prominent golfers in modern American golf history: Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. From 1971 to 1989, Arnold Palmer served as the honorary national chairman of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. He continued to serve the organization for 40 years. Founded by polio sufferer Franklin Roosevelt, the March of Dimes was created to find a cure for the disease. When March of Dimes grantee Jonas Salk created the vaccine that ended polio, the organization turned its attention to birth defects prevention. As most who follow golf know, the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies in Orlando, Fla. were built in part with funds raised through the Arnold Palmer Invitational Tournament. That is not the first or only hospital that Palmer helped to build. Teaming up with Bob Hope and President Dwight Eisenhower, the team raised money through the Bob Hope Classic to build Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Hope donated the land. Palmer has also been involved in fundraising for the Latrobe Area Hospital in Pennsylvania. Both Eisenhower Medical Center and the Latrobe Area Hospital have Arnold Palmer Prostate Cancer Clinics. a Continued from page 51 In addition the new foundation, “Arnie’s Army raises research funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation as well as for other causes. Palmer also supports the Winnie Palmer Nature Reserve, named after his late wife. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus have been long-time supporters of children’s healthcare needs for a personal reason. When their daughter Nan was a child, she would have trouble breathing, and they just kept rushing her to the hospital. Finally, it was discovered that she had gotten something stuck in her throat. Problem solved. Nan was fine. But the Nicklauses continued to feel a debt of gratitude to the hospital. The Memorial Tournament supports the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus as well as other charities. They have also created the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, which provides ongoing funding for free, comprehensive services for children being treated in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. Other charities supported by the Nicklauses include the Boys and Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County Inc. (www.bgcpbc.org), the Center for Family Services of Palm Beach County (www.ctrfam.org), the Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation, (www.mchf.org), The L. Charles Nicklaus Golf Scholarship Fund, Warrior Canine Connection, and The Barbara and Jack Nicklaus Junior Golf Endowment Fund. Taken together, all these individuals have raised millions for charity. The most amazing part is that none of the golfers or their wives has to do any of it. But because they’ve been blessed with success and good fortune, and because they are involved with an organization where charity is a mission, they have caught the charity bug and decided to give something back their way. What could be better than that?

New golf gadgets to up your
game and comfort by Kathy Bissell
Ah, there is nothing like the new golf season to make the gizmos bloom. And each season brings new things and stuff to make your game better or more enjoyable. After arduous days at the PGA Show in January, we collected an assortment of the completely amazing for-your-buying enjoyment, ranging from new clubs to wipes for your face to sterling silver ball markers. Positively the best new product at the PGA Show for on and off course is – drum roll please—no, a bigger drum roll: Chilly Cheeks! What? Yes. Chilly Cheeks.
aJUST CHILLs Picture sitting in Plano, Texas, or Ponte Vedra for that matter, in the middle of summer and getting ready to sit on a golf cart seat or car seat. What do you need? Something to cool the seat, that’s what. Well, that’s what Chilly Cheeks inventor Leslie Baker thought. So she came up with a seat cover that is an envelope for stuff you
freeze and slip into it before you go to the course. Voila! Chilly Cheeks. Take it with you and the cool lasts through a round of golf. (Plus you can have a lot of fun thinking about names that were rejected.) Not only do Chilly Cheeks cool your golf cart seat, they are mult i p u r p o s e . hours, you’ll need to find a freezer to get the Chilly packs cold again so you can be cool on the way home. For work, you can probably borrow the freezer compartment in an office refrigerator, at least until everybody else buys one too. But wait, there’s more. You can also microwave the Cheeks and use them to warm the golf cart or car seat in the winter. How great an idea is that? Easy solution to a common problem faced by many people. Don’t you wish you’d thought of it? I know I do. Chilly Cheeks come in several sizes. There’s the single seat cover size, $39.95; the double seat size, $64.95; the Sling, which is the top and back of one seat, $64.95 (perfect for the car); and two extra Chilly packs, which they call the Overtime Pack, $14.95. Baker said the Overtime Pack is great for those “pesky six-hour charity pro-ams. “ Coming soon: the golf cart seat back. The heating and cooling gel packs slip inside a vinyl-backed fabric that has moisture wicking properties so you don’t get condensation on your golf clothes. The envelope covers are completely washable, but should be hung to dry. Small price to pay for staying cool in summer or warm in winter. (www.chillycheeks.com) What could be better than that? Well honestly nothing, but there’s a close second.
The perfect accessory for a man cave, a Teamtable is basically a cocktail table, but the legs are… well….legs. You can get the golf one with knickers and socks and golf shoes, plus a white wood club. You can also get different style legs, like the one with tartan pants reminiscent of Ian Poulter’s. There are 11 choices in all. You can even get a round green “grass “ rug to put under the table. And if you happen to also be a hockey fan, you can get a hockey Teamtable which has the lower pants and skates of your favorite team. The third leg is a hockey stick, and the rug has a team logo instead of grass. The inventors are Canadian, so they clearly had too much time on their hands when it was too hot for hockey or too cold for golf. (www.teamtables.com)

With all the new restaurants at Sawgrass Village, it’s a no brainer for going to dinner if you’re a resident of TPC Sawgrass or even Marsh Landing. Plus with top speed of 25 mph, you don’t have to worry about those obnoxious, blinking speed limit signs that get parked around town. You can’t go fast enough to get a ticket. (www.mullen.com)
aJOIN THE CLUBs Ok, I suppose some people want to know about golf clubs. One new club hot off the turf is the High Heat Hybrid. High Heat is a company founded by former USGA exec Dean Knuth, and you know him even if you don’t know him because he’s the guy who invented slope. Naturally, his nickname became the Pope of Slope (www.popeofslope.com), I kid you not. Apparently you can’t spend all that time around the technological aspects of the USGA without picking up some good ideas. His High Heat driver got top reviews from those who tried it last year, and this year his High Heat 3-wood and Hybrid proved to be just as good, according to several low handicappers who hit it. One reason golfers liked them on the Demo Day practice tee is that the High Heat fairway woods and hybrids feature a beta titanium cup face, which is supposed to give a significantly increased springlike effect. In other words, more distance, especially compared to
steel. Leave it to a former USGA guy to come up with something springlike in a clubface. Since the USGA has rules about how springy a springy face can be, Knuth knows how far he can push it. “Our High Heat clubs are engineered for single-digit to high-handicap amateurs who have difficulty getting the ball up in the air,” Knuth explained. “Our technology, overall design and use of a beta titanium cup face will help all amateurs improve. “ High Heat driver, $399; High Heat 3-wood, $299; High Heat hybrid, $249, all with the metallic, icy blue coating. Must be to cool down the clubs. (www.knuthgolf.com) The new Ben Hogan company has a new hybrid club. Just as their irons, which are labeled by loft not by number, the Hogan hybrid is available from 17-27 degrees. The reason they came up with this club now, according to company President Terry Koehler, is that they found some designs in the Ben Hogan business papers and one of them was Hogan’s design for hybrids. That was in the 1960s, decades before the idea of hybrids hit the market. The “everything old is new again” Hogan hybrids have a higher ball flight than long irons without sacrificing distance. The actual name is VKTR Hogan hybrids – but Hogan only has one kind of hybrid right now, so people will know what you want – and are available with UST or Aldila shafts. Price is $184 for graphite and $169 for steel. (www.

benhogangolf.com) TaylorMade has introduced a new driver called the M2. It is not terribly unlike the popular M1 in terms of hit-ability, but it has a lower price and less adjustability. Let’s face it, unless you are really smart with lofts and lies, are you really great at using all those adjustable features? This is simpler, cheaper, and I have it on good authority that it goes just as far. The M2 is $399. The motto of the commercials is maximum distance and forgiveness. Who doesn’t need that? With a nod to this year’s defending champ, Cobra Golf has a new King Cobra F6 + Pro driver for $399. It has five what they call “ultra low” center-of-gravity settings which adjust with an 18 gram weight in a sliding track in the sole. It also has an adjustable loft. Will you drive it like Rickie? Well, if you put in the hours he has, and visit with Butch Harmon, there’s a chance. $399. There’s also the F6 without the +. It has two weight setting locations, one in the front for distance and one in the back for forgiveness. Both the F6+ and the F6 have carbon fiber club tops so that means more weight really is on the bottom of the club to get the ball flighted up. The F6 is about $50 less than the F6+. Colors? Oh yes. Screaming orange, shouting blue, very hot red, eureka lime green. OK, those really aren’t the names, but you get the idea. Bright colors. Just when you think traditional companies will never change, Titleist broke the mold. It just came out with a new limited edition driver and new limited edition set of irons aimed at the luxury market. “Just” as in the week after the Masters. The driver, called C16, has adjustable weight ports to change the center of gravity, the first of its kind for this traditional company Made of a three-titanium alloy, it will set you back $1,000 and only 1,500 will be made. The forged irons have a hollow core and are made from three steels plus tungsten. Only 1,000 sets of irons will be made. They cost $2,700 and buyers must go to one of the Titleist fitting centers if they want to buy. Now, something for the kids. Golphin has new kids’ sets. There are clubs and a stand-up bag that looks cool, and they are sold by height of the child. There are two different sets – one that includes bag, driver, 7-iron, putter and wedge; and one that includes bag, driver, putter and either a 7-iron or wedge. According to Golphin, the clubs are 22 percent lighter than other junior clubs and have a 35 percent larger sweet spot. Sets are available on amazon.com from $149 to $179. Good news for former PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman, designer of the Cure RX putter. Lexi Thompson and Russell Henley have decided to use it. The putter has an adjustable shaft angle so that you can get the club to fit your stance not the other way around. “I stand pretty far away from it, and the putter, you just screw the bolts in where you want to stand,” said Thompson about the club. “I just stand where I’m comfortable and then just screw it in. My other putter the toe was up a lot, so it might have been causing me to be inconsistent with it.” The putters are milled from T-6160 Aircraft Grade Aluminum, and there are two adjustable weight ports, one in the toe and one in the

The weights also act as a triangular alignment aid when the golf ball is put in front of the blade. The lie of the Cure RX putter can be adjusted from 10 degrees to 24 degrees. The Rx1 retails for $199. The Rx2 goes for $269. (www.cureputters.com) Now, in the “you’ll-never-believe-it” category are DV8 clubs, which are a set of clubs in a backpack. Yes, in a backpack. The kit comes as a shaft and clubheads, packaged so that you can open up the backpack and snap on one head, then take it off and snap on the next head for the next shot. Is this crazier than Bryson DeChambeau? Perhaps. Perhaps not. (Chambeau, last year’s U.S. Amateur champ, is the one who has all his clubs the same length. He just turned pro at Hilton Head.) The DV8 clubs were an inspiration of Pat Brady (no relation to Tom), who watched countless people dragging golf club bags through an airport and thought there had to be another way. There are questions you have on this, right? The same ones we had. What about the difference in club lengths? The difference in length for each club is added at the clubhead end of the attachment. The rest of the shaft remains the same. It takes about 30 seconds to change from one clubhead to another. The experts the inventor brought in to make the clubs perform were from Callaway and TaylorMade, so the golf stuff should be right. Okay, it’s not like having your full set, but if you are sent to St. Louis for a day-and-a-half and don’t want to lug clubs, do you want to carry a backpack? Maybe. The sets come in lengths from -1 to +2, in right and left-handed models. The small set with 10 clubs is $899; the full set
with 14 clubs is $1,100. (www.dv8sports.com) Now let’s go to some Jordan Spieth gear. Maybe you want his putter grip. Can’t hurt, right? Spieth uses a SuperStroke Flatso 1.0 grip. The putter grip has a NoTaper design which is supposed to promote even grip pressure and reduce tension in the writs and forearms. He also uses SuperStroke’s S-Tech grips on the rest of his clubs in a black colorway design. The putter grip is $34.99 online. The S-Tech grips are $5.99 each. (www. superstrokeusa.com)
aGLASSES, GLOVES AND MOREs Even though Jordan Spieth doesn’t wear sunglasses on the course, he wears them off the course, and he’s using the new Under Armour sunglasses. Spieth’s caddie, Michael Greller, does wear them and he likes the Big Shot design. Hunter Mahan and Gary Woodland also wear them. Available at Dicks and PGA Superstores, the sunglasses range from $90 to 130. (www.underarmour.com) Johnny Miller has taken an ownership position in Zero Friction gloves. You know Johnny. He’s not the kind of guy to just give lip service to something. Because of his association, the company has designed the Johnny Miller Motion Fit Glove .

Let Us Help You Get Back To Your Golf Game! When I lost all feeling in my right leg, and went to Mayo Clinic, I was told I had had a stroke. After three days at Mayo, I left with my leg still numb and I came to Dr. Hamer. When I came in, I still couldn’t walk but when I left her office after one visit, I had full use of my leg! After three more visits in one week with Dr. Hamer, I am 100% better; I am not using a cane, and I will be playing in a golf tournament on Saturday, all with the help of Dr. Hamer. Way to go! a Continued from page 60 “When you play with it, you will see it has a good solid grip,” Miller said. “In fact, I think people will say, ‘that was custom-made for my hand’ when they try it.” The new Johnny Miller endorsed Cabretta leather and spandex gloves stretch and compress to each hand for a taut fit. They are available in 12 color combinations. $21.95 (www.zerofriction.com) There’s a new way to apply sunscreen so that you don’t get hands messy. It’s called YouVee’s swipes and you put your fingers into the pocket of the swipe and apply. Sunscreen is embedded in the swipe and has SPF 30. It’s water resistant for long wear. For golf, you may want to reapply before the round is over. Just open up another one and wipe on more protection. YouVee’s use titanium dioxide and octinoxate to help prevent sunburn with aloe and nourishing oils to help moisturize. A six-pack sells for $5.99; a 24-pack box is $22.50. A carry case with 12 swipe that hangs on the golf bag goes for $19.99. (www.goadventuress.com) When you’re finished with the round, grab a MustGear aromatherapy cleaning wipe in lime and eucalyptus, lavender and lime or peppermint and lime, and come away fresh. Steven Kim, the inventor, formerly worked for Sephora in creating fragrances. It took him 18 months to get a formulation for wipes that would pass his rigorous inspection. The wipes are alcohol-free, paraben-free and hypoallergenic. He calls them a spa and a shower in a wipe. They can be bought in 15-wipe packs, five of each scent, for $22.49 (www. mustgearsportswipes.com) One of my personal favorites from this year’s PGA Show is a club carrier which for some reason they call a silo. Basically it’s about the size of soda can, made from flexible stuff and it has slots around it
so that you can pop the shaft of a club into it. It also has a tee holder. The silo holds six clubs, which is perfect for taking to the range when you don’t want to take a whole bag. The story behind the invention is that the inventor had two children’s car seats in the back of the car and apparently no trunk space. So rather than mess with the kids’ territory, he came up with the carrier for times he wanted to go to the range. $25. (www.rivalanrevel.com) You probably remember seeing Jason Dufner put a golf glove under his arm and take a practice swing before hitting golf shots. Well, David Leadbetter has a training aid to do the same thing. And in case you are sweating on the course, you don’t want to put a perfectly good golf glove there. Leadbetter’s invention is called the Boomerang. According to Leadbetter, the Boomerang encourages the left arm to stay connected to the chest on the backswing and through impact. Because it’s going to fall to the ground after a full swing, there’s a magnet in the Boomerang so you can touch your club to it for easy pick-up. $25 (www.davidleadbetter.com) Hackers RX, meanwhile, looks like a great answer to carrying those training rods around in your golf bag. It’s a collapsible device with three telescoping rods and two plastic golf balls.. “Every golfer will want one in their bag to use on the practice range,” Bill Kratzert has said about the gizmo. You use it to line up the target so you can do a better job of getting into the right position to hit a golf shot on line. It also helps you learn how to hit draws and fades by providing a swing line aid. Go to the web site and see the photos. Pictures are worth the proverbial 1,000 words. $44.95 (www.hackersrx.com) Bob Hildebrandt invented the PuttPure device, which basically is two, magnetic, two-inch rods that attach to the putter or wedge face

to help practice alignment on those shots. They even include two adhesive steel dots which can be attached to non-magnetic surfaces. Just $20. PGA Superstores has them. Hank Haney loves Impact Snap, which is a golf training device that teaches you where impact is and what it feels like to be there. (www. impactsnap.com) $89. It comes in right-handed and left-handed models. There’s a new golf bag called KLVN after Kolven (but with no vowels). Kolven is what golf historians think may have been a precursor to golf. The bag is made from some kind of special highimpact plastic instead of leather or cloth or pleather. But the whiz bang part of it is that a part of the bag lifts out so you can take a smaller bag to the range. It has zipper compartments that snap in and have different configurations and colors, like turquoise, hot pink, lime, bright lilac. The base frame is either charcoal or white. $389 (www.klvn.com) Two guys from California who are not fat decided to start a company called Chubbies, which has shorts that have elastic at the waist and shirts that are worn out. Half the fun is the name of the designs. My favorite names are Here’s The Beef – which has hamburgers all over it – and Hammerheads, which has pink hammerhead sharks on a blue graphic background. ($60) Thighroglyphics features a pink background with nonsensical geometric designs in coral and blue. The shirts work for many sizes because they have relaxed fit and slimmer fit. The shirt that matches Here’s the Beef is called the Medium Rare ($65). Or pair Hammerhead with Nailed it, the matching shirt. Imagine yourself on July 4 standing at the grill in a top and shorts with burgers all over it. On purpose. How much more celebratory can a person get? Whether the shorts are long enough for dress codes at golf courses may be in question, as they only have seven-
inch inseams at the longest. (www.chubbi esshor ts. com) And finally, if you always wanted a Bentley but couldn’t afford it, maybe now you can. There are now Bentley Clubs and accessories. The clubs are definitely not an off-the-rack situation. If you want them, there’s a procedure. Apparently, they fly you to Japan, where the clubs are made so that you have an absolutely perfect club-fitting experience. Bentley clubs are available in driver through putter in men’s and ladies models. The driver costs approximately $850 plus 20 percent VAT. You can order single clubs or sets. For example, the BB1 Set Tour Steel includes driver, fairway, utility, hybrid, blade irons (steel shaft) 5–pw, 52, 56, 60 degree wedges, putter and tour bag for approximately $10,300, including 20 percent VAT. Or try the Bentley BB1 Set Tour Graphite, same clubs plus bag, for approximately $11,100, including 20 percent VAT. The Grip is “Bentley,” and can be ordered to match your car, if you have one. The accessories include such things as a stainless steel ball marker for about $100 or sterling silver for about $700. The leather scorecard holder is about $85. The trick is finding a Bentley dealer. Orlando, Miami and Palm Beach are probably the best bets.

To mic or not to mic? by Kathy Bissell
Would you wear a microphone at the office so that every word you said was a matter of public record? No? It might cut down on office gossip and improve productivity, but it would probably be a very unpopular idea and a difficult environment for all employees. That’s because none of us is perfect every minute of every day. And yet we all want to know what sports people are saying when they are getting ready to perform. We want to know what they were thinking before holing that winning putt at The Players or why they decided to hit a certain club at the 17th. The Skins Game – no longer played – may have put this need-to -know notion in our heads because it had microphones on all four contestants. But that was when the ever-talkative Lee Trevino and Fuzzy Zoeller were playing. Typical golfers are not stand-up comics. And not everyone wants his or her thoughts broadcast, sometimes for strategy reasons. In tournaments where there is TV coverage starting in the late morning, would it give the afternoon players a distinct advantage to hear what the competition said in the morning? And when it comes to language on the golf course, I have to admit that in the past, I have uttered some exclamations worse than “Rats!” How do PGA Tour players feel about it? Let’s find out.
aJASON DAYs
“
I don’t mind. I have no problems because I don’t feel like I cuss too much out there so I think I’m all right. I’m not like an angry golfer out there…. I wouldn’t mind it as long as I don’t feel like it’s hindering my swing. Then I could probably wear it. “I’ve always wanted to know what other players say and stuff like that especially it’s more so for my personal use…I kind of got close on a couple shots just to try and hear what (Rory) and JP were going through and saying. “I mean that’s just from my personal use. I’d love to hear more on what guys go through, the information that rolls through their brain, the information that goes through and obviously the communication between player and caddie. I’d love to hear that because I’ve only heard it a few times from Rory and Rickie and all those other guys I played with and we’re all different. I could definitely use that information, but I don’t know. “I had a microphone on me once at Colonial, and I was talking about a ‘99 Toyota Camry. It wasn’t the greatest conversation that I had.
” “
aRICKIE FOWLERs I think if there was some ways to control it. I wouldn’t want to be mic’d up 24/7 out there. I don’t want to give away certain things that my caddie and I may be discussing throughout a round and what we’re trying to work on or game plan or anything like that. “I think that a lot of the conversations, especially prior to shots, are still caught on the mic quite a bit. And sometimes there might not be stuff that you want to get out, whether it’s just discussing dinner from the night before. I think it’s a little bit of a touchy subject.
”

“ “
I wouldn’t do it. I think it’s between the player and the caddie what goes on on the golf course. It’s probably not a great idea.
”
aBRANDT SNEDEKERs
I’ve done it before. I don’t mind it at all. Fans enjoy it. I’d do it. I don’t have a dirty mouth or anything like that, so I wouldn’t get caught saying anything too bad. I did that a couple years ago… it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
”
aHENRIK STENSONs
“
No. I think I left my mother tongue a number of years ago when I get upset, so I don’t think it’s a good idea. I wouldn’t feel comfortable because I’d have to be aware of that all the time. I prefer not to.
”
aJUSTIN ROSEs
“
Not interested in that. I think that what goes on is between a player and his caddie, and I think there’s a lot of intellectual property there. You work hard your whole career to try to find an edge out here on tour, and the way you communicate and the way you work, I think you don’t like to give that information away – certainly to other players (and) not necessarily everybody watching at home. So, I’m not a fan of that.
”
aDAVID LINMERTHs
“ “ ” “
”
No thanks. I’m good.
aEMILIANO GRILLOs Sure ..
aDAVIS LOVE IIIs I have worn a microphone, and I would, yeah. I think it’s good for the game on a Thursday or Friday, either me or the caddie. If it was decided in 2017 that’s what we are going to do and we got used to it, it wouldn’t bother us. I think they’re close enough already probably, but on a caddie it would be a good experiment.
aFREDDIE JACOBSENs
“
”
Naw, I think that’s ridiculous. I don’t think we need that. You need some privacy. “I mean, it’s our job. We’re out there – it’s a sport that requires a lot of focus and all that. We’ve got microphones nearby us. A lot of times, you’re in the heat of the battle. “People don’t need to hear everything we say. I think you do bad things. You get off rhythm. I think it’s unnecessary. I think the microphones maybe pick up more than they should sometimes.
aBRENDAN STEELEs
“
”
Not good. Very poor. Obviously, it would make the viewer experience better but…it would be kind of uncomfortable for the players.
”
aZACH JOHNSONs
“ “ “
I don’t particularly care for it.
aRETIEF GOOSENs
”
Amelia Island
I would be against it, because I’d be swearing all the way around and that won’t be any good.
aBILLY HORSCHELs
”
I think it’s fine. You’ve got to understand we’re in the heat of the competition and it’s no different than players in the NFL or NBA or MLB when they’ve got a live mic on – not on them but on the field and you hear stuff come out of their mouth. It’s no different out here. “Obviously we’re looked upon differently out here, because it’s a well-respected game, which it should be. But in the heat of the moment, people are going to say certain things. Just be prepared to have the mute button ready in my opinion.
aJASON KOKRAKs
“
”
No that’s bad idea. It would be funny to mic us up in a practice round, but during the rounds we really wouldn’t want to do that. “We’ll say stuff under our breath every once in a while that you wouldn’t want most people to hear, but it’s just one of those things that I personally wouldn’t want to wear one.

The Terror of Predicting the Winner by Kathy Bissell
Heaven help us. It’s that time of year when I’m asked to predict the winner of The Players. I always avoid it until the very last minute, because most of the time I’m so wrong it’s ridiculous. In fact, I have sometimes offered apologies to those I’ve picked because I’m so seldom right. Then again, I have picked a winner once or twice. “Blind squirrel finds the occasional acorn in a field of oak trees” is the only possible explanation for that. This time I reached out to Tyler Henry, that new kid who is doing psychic readings on E!, but he was much too busy predicting the future of Dr. Dubrow of Botched – you know, the guy who fixes up people who have had bad plastic surgery. I tried reaching out, mentally, to the Long Island Medium, but apparently I was not on her wave length because there was no telepathic response from her. After that, I studied the squirrel magnet on the refrigerator. Yes, Continued on page 70 s

a Continued from page 68 I have a squirrel magnet that you can actually dress as Santa or a cowboy. As a cowboy, he has holes in his hat so his ears can poke out. This squirrel thing is a family joke because my parents, like many people, used to have bird feeder wars with the squirrels. After nothing from the squirrel, I gazed at a couple drawings from my granddaughter. Nothing was coming to me. I even left town for a couple days to get away from making a pick. But now, it’s go time, as Rickie Fowler says. I can’t avoid it any longer. My actual golf research has been alternating between looking at PGA Tour media guides, seeing who won recently on Pete Dye golf courses, perusing stats and just downright screaming at my computer. I’d say this was more painful than childbirth, but I’d be lying. It’s not even one one-hundred-thousandth of that. This is only mental torture. Ok, ok. I know you have the Family Players Pool or the Office Players Pool, and you want to know who you should pick. Or you are in a fantasy league and you want a sure fire way to beat everybody. Well, here’s what I know. If I hadn’t watched the Masters, I’d say pick Jason Day. He won recently on a Pete Dye course (Dell Match Play at Austin Country Club), and he won the PGA last summer on an ornery, spiteful, mean-spirited, Pete Dye golf course at Whistling Straits. That one is like taking TPC Sawgrass and making the holes go up and down like they were on overpasses and then dumping sand all over everything. Then you throw in some scenic Lake Michigan views where your ball can actually end up. But at Augusta, Jason Continued on page 74 s

Day, like everyone else, battled the winds which wreaked havoc with his ball flight. Or else he was just too tuckered out after two victories to sail up the leaderboard there. At Harbour Town, another Pete Dye course, it was too short for Jason to have the advantage of length. As much as I think he’s a lock to win anywhere, he doesn’t have that length advantage at TPC Sawgrass on most holes. However, if his driver is on, he could driver-wedge his way to victory. He can ball-strike a course to death. He can reach and birdie every par five. He’s world No. 1. If I hadn’t watched the Masters, I’d say Rory McIlroy. While Jason Day is an excellent ball-striker, it’s really, really hard to top Rory McIlroy in that category. He is superb. It looks like he’s finally figured out the course after early years of missed cuts. His best finish is 6th, and really, there’s no course he can’t play well if he sets his mind to it. He’s changed his putting style to cross-handed, and that seems to work better for him. He nails the par fives. Winning the biggest tournament on the PGA Tour, you’d think, would be on his to do list. He’s just been a little under the radar since he won the Race to Dubai last fall. If I hadn’t watched the Masters, I’d say pick Jordan Spieth, who has done well here once and then just blew up last year after winning the Masters, his first major. He doesn’t have a long enough track record to predict anything bad. He was in the top five his first year here. Jordan is the best scrambler since eggs. He can chip and putt and whack his way out of trouble better than Pete Dye with a machete building TPC Sawgrass. Even if his shot to the right that cost him the Masters hasn’t been fixed yet, he can play TPC Sawgrass with the right miss except at No. 2 off the tee, No. 16 on the second shot, and of course No. 17. There’s no missing right at 17, unless you line up aimed at the
drop zone and take a whack at it and miraculously your shot lands on the green. Nobody in golf would want to play like that. Except maybe Bubba Watson. And speaking of Bubba, he just plain doesn’t like the course at TPC Sawgrass, but he’s won at another Pete Dye course, the TPC of Louisiana, and nearly won the PGA at Whistling Straits the year Martin Kaymer won. Maybe Pete made TPC Louisiana easier to look at than TPC Sawgrass. Bubba says he can’t see where he should land the ball, that the fairways aren’t visible like they are on other courses. “Heh, heh, heh,” laughs Pete Dye. “It’s my skill with visual distraction.” So while Bubba has played well at several Pete Dye courses, this isn’t one of them. He continually reminds us that his best finish here is 37th. I don’t think he’s the guy. I love Bubba and his crazy mental state, but this course isn’t his cup of Bermudagrass. Could Rickie Fowler become the first repeat champ at TPC Sawgrass? In the history of the tournament, no one has done that. Fowler’s won once this year and had a second, but that was months ago. He hit the island green blindfolded after media day for some kind of promotional deal or another. Could that be an omen? He might be the guy with enough mojo to do something nobody else has done. It’s possible. A sleeper pick has to be Sergio Garcia who would probably have won last year had it not been for Fowler’s remarkable finish and miraculous shots in the playoff. Sergio is a ball-striking machine, and though his putting has been off and on in his career, he can putt well enough for these greens, which are not the trickiest, except at No. 4. (Augusta National has the trickiest greens every year, except in 2016, because Oakmont, which has impossible greens, is the site
for the U.S. Open.) Keep Sergio as a possible for The Players. You might think Dustin Johnson because of his length and strength. Every par five here is an easy par four for him. And yet, the best finish he’s had in 10 years is in the 30s. That’s mind-boggling. There’s no good reason for that. He has the shots. You’d say maybe he just doesn’t like the water, except that we know he has a boat, so we know he does like water. Ah well, Dustin Johnson, international man of golf mystery, but not on my list of picks. One former winner has cracked the code of TPC Sawgrass, and that’s Henrik Stenson. His forte is accuracy, and when his irons are on, he’s deadly with them. He’s high up in driving accuracy and in greens in regulation this year, and that’s usually a lethal Continued on page 76 s

a Continued from page 75 combination, except when it isn’t, of course. He’s in the top 20 this year in scoring. Plus he’s hysterical in the press room with his dry wit. It’s often tough for foreign players to get the right intonation do to American humor, but not Henrik. At last year’s Tour Championship, after playing with and losing to Jordan Spieth, he was asked about a 16-foot putt Jordan made, and he said, “That’s just a tap in for him.” Another past champ who has to be on the list because of his fabulous recent play is Adam Scott. With his elegant swing, you almost don’t care where he hits it. He’s just a pleasure to watch. Lately, though, he’s been hitting it where he wants to. With back-to-back victories at two very hard courses, PGA National and Trump Doral’s Blue Monster, I like his chances. He’s overcome the putting issues he believed he had, and Adam Scott, even if he’s just an average putter in any week, can win with his awesome ball-striking taking center stage. I have a sneaking suspicion about Justin Rose. He’s a U.S. Open champ. He’s got a putting stroke that works more than it doesn’t. He’s fourth in scoring average this year, which is important. The old it’s not how, it’s how many. He’s got that One Direction friend Niall Horan who loves to play golf. He must be cool enough to win it, right? And do not, do not, do not forget about Phil. Phil Mickelson, of course. The man, at age 40-something, is leading the PGA Tour in scoring. And you can talk about scrambling and putting and par fives and all manner of stats, but the only real stat that matters is the score at the end of four rounds. Nobody cares how you got there if you end up with the lowest score. The golf ball doesn’t know he’s 40-something. So how can you pick against the guy with the lowest

scoring average? A guy who has won at TPC Sawgrass. A guy who can get it up and down from Mars if necessary. A guy who loves the limelight. If you are looking for a long shot, try Hideki Matsuyama, who won at The Memorial in 2014 and beat Rickie Fowler in a playoff this year at the Waste Management Open. And he won them both in playoffs, so he is one tough dude. A winner of the Asian Amateur twice, in 2010 and 2011, Matsuyama turned pro in 2013, the same year as Jordan Spieth, and qualified for the PGA Tour by playing his way on with sponsor exemptions. The Players could be the biggest victory in history for a Japanese-born player. Do I think the winner will come from that group? Yes. But remember, I’m mostly wrong. If I had to pick one guy to win this year, I’d say Phil Mickelson, assuming he is free of health issues that week. Justin Rose will not leave my subconscious, so he’s a close second, or else it’s the Long Island Medium finally getting back to me. If I had to pick a backup, I’d go with Zach Johnson, not because he’s leading in any category, but because after two majors, he’s really playing with house money for the rest of his career. He has that pick your way around the course kind of mentality, and he’s very, very tough. It would be his lucky 13th victory. (And as we say here in Ponte Vedra, his third major.) If you are forced to make a pick, and you have some time, wait until the winner has been determined at the Wells Fargo Championship, which is the week before The Players and pick whomever won because he’ll be the hottest golfer at the time. Now, I wonder what the Long Island Medium really meant about Justin Rose….

The last two years of Jordan Spieth’s life have been mind blowing. He’s had a series of adjustments we’d all like to make due to his success on the golf course. He is, after all, in just his fourth season as a professional, and already he’s won two major championships, six additional PGA Tour events, Tiger Woods’ event (Hero World Challenge) and the Emirates Australian Open. Never mind the gutwrenching second at the Masters this year. He will likely be the top of our Olympic golf team along with Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson and perhaps Patrick Reed. (The top 15 in the World Golf Rankings will go.) But let’s be clear. Coming out of college, Jordan Spieth was no Tiger Woods. If you thought you saw his success ahead of time, you are either lying or you are the Long Island Medium. Nobody would have expected it. Nobody. Except maybe Jordan Spieth. While watching the Masters, a friend of one of the XM Radio hosts on PGA Tour radio asked, how can he be so good when he looks so average? Well, guess what, there’s just nothing average about Spieth, even though he looks like the kid next door. He got his first taste of professional golf in 2010 when he was 16, when the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic provided him with a special exemption to play in his hometown of Dallas. “People have won as amateurs before and making the cut would be something special in itself but obviously you try and get it going and see where that takes you,” Spieth said before teeing it up as a teenager.

a Continued from page 79 Obviously, he did not lack confidence. In his first start at a professional event, he exceeded everybody’s expectations but his own, finishing 16th. “I definitely loved being able to learn from the guys I was playing with, and just on and off the course, seeing how they were approaching their pre-round routine and stuff, just speaking with a couple of them in the locker room,” Spieth said at the end of the week. He added that he couldn’t wait to be able to try it again, and sure enough, he got the chance. The next season, 2011, he also played in the AT&T Byron Nelson, making the cut and finishing 36th. He wasn’t happy with it because he finished with bogeys on the final three holes. “I was everywhere on this course,” Spieth said. “I probably played a shot left-handed. I hit probably 30 trees out there, but, you know, it just wasn’t there, just wasn’t there with the driver,” he explained. “No one really expected me to give it a shot today. I expected myself to win today or at least give it a good chance. I was able to fight back other bogeys and make some other birdies, and I’m happy with the way that happened.” In the spring of 2012, still an amateur, he played in the Valero Texas Open and finished 41st. He was in his first year of college in Austin at the University of Texas. Once again, he met the media. “In all these tour events, not only am I just measuring my own game against them, but I’m trying to learn stuff from them,” he said then. “They’re all out here – PGA Tour members for a reason so – I’m trying to be where they are.” That same spring he got into the U.S. Open as an alternate when
Brandt Snedeker withdrew. Spieth made the cut and ended the week 21st. As a collegian, Spieth had a short but excellent career. He was named Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in 2012, when the Texas Longhorns won the NCAA Championship. He was rated the top amateur in the country. He was never the U.S. Amateur champ, however, and the year Texas won the NCAA, a Belgian, Thomas Pieters from the University of Illinois, won the individual title. Despite the fact that he did not have the resume of some golfers who have left college early, Spieth made a decision to turn pro in December 2012, midway through his sophomore year. “I owe everything I’ve achieved thus far to the support of my family, friends, teammates and the University of Texas,” he said at the time. “While I’m proud of what my teammates and I have accomplished, I couldn’t be more excited to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a professional golfer.” His decision came well after the PGA Tour Q-School was completed and that meant Spieth entered the unknown, without a tour where he could play, without a way to set a schedule. He had to hope tournament sponsors would take a chance on him, based on his previous play at PGA Tour events. He needed to get sponsor exemptions. Some players go through the seven exemption process and are not successful in making it to PGA Tour status. Justin Leonard made it. Tiger Woods made it. But few do. Spieth was taking a chance, believing that he was skilled enough to get the job done. Between December 2012 and January 2013, Spieth was fortunate to sign a sponsorship deal with an up and coming clothing company,

Under Armour. Things were looking up, financially at least. Then he received sponsor exemptions to two Web.com events – one in Panama and one in Columbia – where he finished tied for 7th and 4th, respectively. However, there were only two ways Spieth could gain status on the PGA Tour. One was to play out the Web.com Tour season and finish top five. The other was to earn enough money with seven PGA Tour sponsor exemptions – the maximum allowed for non-members – to gain temporary PGA Tour status for the rest of the season. He was trying for door number two. He was fortunate to get into the 2013 Farmer’s Insurance Open, but he missed the cut there. One exemption down, six remaining. It was clear that the PGA Tour was harder than the Web.com Tour. His next shot was the AT&T Pebble Beach, and he made the cut, finishing 22nd. It was progress. In February 2016, he commented on how important that exemption was to him in 2013. “This was a tournament where I received an exemption four years ago when I didn’t have any status anywhere. It was my second professional (PGA Tour) start. And it’s really close to my heart,” he explained prior to the tournament. After Pebble Beach it was two exemptions down, five to go and Spieth headed to the Puerto Rico event, a tournament played opposite a World Golf Championship. That’s where his first miraculous week happened. He shot four rounds in the 60s, got to 19-under par, and finished second. “All in all, obviously I’m real excited with how the week ended, and I would have taken second at the beginning of the week if you told me,” he said.
Finishing second was important for another reason. It meant he could enter the next regular PGA Tour event, which was the following week in Tampa, without needing to use up an exemption. Top 10 finishes allow non-exempt players to enter the next regular PGA Tour event without needing or using up a sponsor exemption. After Tampa, he would still have four more sponsor exemptions if he needed them. Tampa proved to be the second big turning point in his young career. He finished seventh, and with the money he earned there, he was able to gain what is called special temporary status on the PGA Tour. That meant he could request and receive exemptions for an unlimited number of regular PGA Tour events for the rest of the season. “I was really happy to finish strong, and I needed that putt on 18 for a tour card, so it’s a good feeling,” he said immediately after finishing. “Now it’s a great feeling to know that I’m at least a temporary member of the tour right now.” He knew before the tournament began what he needed to do to get the temporary membership. “I was looking at the boards and grinding it out and so the last three holes on Sunday here were three of the biggest holes I played all last year,” he later said about Tampa. His next challenge was to make enough money in the remaining tournaments of 2013 to finish the season in the top 125 on the money list so that he would have a bullet-proof PGA Tour card for the following season. And so, Spieth played like a golfer possessed, skipping only those events he was not qualified to enter like The Masters and The Players. It’s a wonder he didn’t collapse from Continued on page 82 s

He was not qualified for The Players week, but he was able to enter the HP Byron Nelson, the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, The Memorial, and the U.S. Open. His best finish of those was 7th at the Crowne Plaza. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open. Next he entered the AT&T National (now Quicken Loans) and the Greenbriar Classic. There was no let up in his schedule. To explain how much he played, the requirement for PGA Tour players is 15 tournaments for the entire year, and Spieth played 16 between late January and the middle of July, plus two Web.com events, or 18 in all within six-anda-half months. He played everything he was allowed to play and everywhere he could get an invitation to play. Then, after Greenbriar, came the John Deere Classic, where his life changed, dramatically, one more time. In the final round of the John Deere, Spieth birdied the last three holes to force a playoff with Zach Johnson and David Hearn. The tournament was settled on the fifth playoff hole, where Spieth, age 19 years, 11 months, 18 days, became the second youngest winner of a PGA Tour. (Ralph Guldahl won the 1931 Santa Monica Open at age 19 years, 2 months, 4 days.) To say he was thrilled is an understatement, but he sounded humble. “I had a plan. I guess the plan got exceeded,” he said. “I wanted to
just earn my tour card for next year (during) this year somehow. And now to be able to have it for a couple of years and to be able to have an exemption to Augusta, I mean, all the stuff that comes with it, be able to play in the playoffs. It hasn’t hit me yet.” The victory also qualified him for the British Open, which he had not originally intended to play. He was the last entrant. “I thought I was going to play two out of the four, and I ended up playing four in a row here,” he said after playing the British Open. “I packed for the Washington, D.C. heat and ended up in Scotland.” He said his legs were tired right at that moment, and he was a little concerned about only having short sleeve shirts with him for a trip to Scotland. At the British Open, he finished 44th. No matter what, the rest of the year would be gravy. Spieth finally took a couple of weeks off, but picked up again at the PGA (missed cut) and then played six more in a row. He made the Tour Championship in his first season, and finished second there. He was a captain’s pick for the Presidents Cup team. Jordan Spieth had gone from zero to the Tour Championship to the Presidents Cup in less than a year. He was the new phenom, and that is not an exaggeration. “The beginning of the year, my goal…was just to get on tour next season,” he admitted at the end of the season. “It was just to get my 2014 PGA Tour card. I thought that it would come through the Web. com Tour this year and the Web.com Playoffs. And those couple weeks happen at Puerto Rico and Tampa that really changed my golf life. “I just had to readjust goals a couple different times this year and

definitely exceeded any expectations I could have imagined starting the year.” He had started the season with no status and won a tournament half way through it to earn his PGA Tour card for two years. The next year, 2014, he played 27 events and his best finishes were two seconds, one at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, and one very memorable one at the Masters. He did have the lead at The Players, just as he had at The Masters, and he wasn’t able to capitalize there either. However, he was picked for the Ryder Cup team. Then, 2015, the year that will forever separate Jordan Spieth from the majority of PGA Tour players, got underway. Spieth said that his charge to an historic season really began at the end of the 2014 season when he played overseas. First it was the HSBC in China and after that, the Dunlop Phoenix in Japan. Then, in Australia, he shot a final round 63 at the Emirates Australian Open to beat Rory McIlroy, who was world No.1. Six months later, he would explain the impact of that victory. “What the Australian Open did is, in a period where I had some struggles towards the top of the leaderboard on Sundays, it was a level of patience and a level of – it was trial and error for a couple of times – and I had not found the solution,” he began. “We found the solution in Australia against a world-class field including the World No.1 and 2 at the time. Closing out that tournament and seeing what that meant in the history of that tournament and understanding who won there, it meant a lot.” A couple of weeks later, he won the Hero Challenge over an elite field at Tiger Woods’ tournament. He probably wished the heart of the 2015 season started then. “In general, this was the best that I’ve ever played, which is what I
said in a media center in Sydney last week. I played better this week. This is the best I’ve played,” he said. “Hopefully, look back and continue to grow off this week.” However, the 2015 calendar year started unremarkably, compared to the end of 2014. His highest finish the first two months was a tie for 4th at the Northern Trust. Then he headed to the Valspar which is where all the action started. Once again, Spieth got into a playoff, this time with Patrick Reed and Sean O’Hair, and again, he was the victor. So he had two more years of exemptions on the PGA Tour. But better than that, he was showing good form at a time of year that’s important to golfers. It was just a few weeks to The Masters. Of course, the rest, you pretty much know. At The Masters, Spieth got to 19-under for a short time, but ended the week at 18-under, tying Tiger Woods’ record in 1997. Spieth made the rounds of the talk shows. Exhausted, he played the RBC Heritage because he had entered it. Then, he missed the cut at The Players. “I was struggling hitting the ball,” he admitted. “I was looking for something in my alignment, just didn’t quite trust it today until I was already too far behind the 8-ball. So, yeah, just a really, really poor day.” He said sometimes you get a day of bad breaks, but that wasn’t the reason for his score. If his putting had been poor, he added, his score would have been much worse. At the U.S. Open, because he was the Masters champ, there was a lot of attention on him, at the start of the week, but it was nothing compared to the amount of attention he received by the end of the Continued on page 84 s

a Continued from page 83 week. However, it did look like he was pretty much trying to give it away at the 17th hole. “I didn’t think I had lost it after 17, but I thought I needed to play 18 well just to play tomorrow (in a playoff),” he said. “It’s incredible to win a major championship. You only get a few moments in your life like this, and I recognize that. And to have two in one year and to still be early in the year, that’s hard to wrap my head around.” To keep his Masters and U.S. Open victories in historic perspective, only five other players have won those events in the same season: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Craig Wood and Ben Hogan. Wood and Hogan did it before there was such a thing as the modern day Grand Slam because Arnold Palmer invented the modern Grand Slam in 1960 when he won those two events and headed to the British Open. The modern day Grand Slam is winning The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open and the PGA in the same year. No one has ever done it. Palmer was the first modern era golfer to try it. Nicklaus was the second. Woods, the third. Then Spieth. So, having won the first two, he had a chance to match a feat that only Ben Hogan has accomplished: winning the first three majors of the season, which Hogan did in 1953. He knew it. The media knew it. All the other players knew it. Eventually the fans knew it. And yet, Spieth actually talked about it at the 2016 Masters. “I see it as something that’s only been done once before, and it was a long time ago. I think that to be in that category of having done something that you love to do and that you’re doing for your life,
only one person has ever done it before, that opportunity very rarely comes around, and I’d like to have a chance to do something nobody has ever done,” he said. “I think that the Grand Slam is something that I never could really fathom somebody doing, considering I watched Tiger win when he was winning whatever percentage of the majors he played in and he won the Tiger Slam, but he never won the four in one year. And I figured if anybody was going to do it, it would be him, which he still can.” Spieth went to St. Andrews with a chance to tie Hogan and a chance at more golf history. He had a shot through the 16th hole in the final round, but poor shots on the last two holes meant Zach Johnson would win. Then Jason Day came to the forefront at the PGA and won that. But Spieth was not done with 2015. At the Tour Championship, his game was not on. He had to struggle for the victory. But he won it, and also the FedEx Cup. “It was amazing that we competed with the way I felt over the ball,” he said after his victory there. “But my short game was phenomenal this week.” Spieth revealed one secret from that week, and it was just to think about the week, not the implications of victory or of the season as a whole. When it came to the season as a whole, he definitely knew what was the most significant moment. “What am I most proud of this year? The Green Jacket. That was, as far as on-course performance, what am I most proud of, was the Masters win,” he said. “That was one that you grow up every single day going out to your practice green with your buddies saying, you have the last putt in the putting contest, it’s all tied up, this is to win

the Masters.” He exceeded his own expectations, but not his dreams. “It’s the greatest season I’ve ever had, obviously. But it’s one where I believe I – we took our game on course and off course to a level that I didn’t think would be possible at different times in my life,” he explained. “I believed that we could get to this position where we’re at right now. But there’s plenty of times where you feel so poorly with the putter or you’re not hitting any fairways with the driver, or you sit back and think how in the world does somebody do this?” Interesting admission. When Spieth is winning, the amazing thing is he doesn’t look like he’s dominating a course or a tournament when he’s leading. He doesn’t hit drives as far as Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson. But when his iron game is on and he finds a fairway, he can putt and chip like a demon. Still Spieth looks and acts like a normal person, not like someone so on fire that he has flames coming out of his ears. He looks so normal it’s easy to think, hey, that could be me. But of course, we are only dreaming. In 2015, Spieth achieved so much that, even for the miraculous Jordan Spieth, it will be very hard to top. As Adam Scott said, “I can only praise Jordan for everything he’s done, the way he’s handled himself and the way he’s played after winning the Masters. To win the U.S. Open…it’s like fairy tale stuff.” After his last 12 months, Spieth was uniquely positioned to answer the question, is it possible for anyone to win the Grand Slam in the same season. He answered it at the Masters, hoping it wouldn’t come back to haunt him. “I would have said prior to last year, no. And it’s almost conceited
for me to say because of last year, he began, “but we were so close and it was one break here or there. Now we got the breaks this week (2015 Masters), and we certainly got the breaks at the U.S. Open.” He added Chambers Bay was a golf course where you needed the breaks. “I had control of my own destiny at The Open Championship. And then the PGA, I’ll use an excuse right now and say, there was a three stroke difference in the draw,” he added, referring to the first two days where half the field is in the morning on day one and in the afternoon on day two and the other half of the field is vice versa. He credited being on the wrong end of the draw there with three strokes. “I started I think three shots behind, two to four shots the last day and I think I lost by three,” he explained. “It seems silly, right. It seems like you can overcome that in a major, but it makes a difference. You have to have everything go your way to win a golf tournament, let alone to win a major, to have that happen the four times in a year in those four weeks.” In other words, a player has to be on his game, and he has to get more than the average number of breaks in a four-day period when the tournaments are being contested. “I think it can happen, but especially with the way things have changed in media and just the lack of ability to stay private, if someone wins the first three majors, it’s going to be very difficult to shut out the noise by the fourth and to still play your own game,” he concluded. All we know for sure is the Grand Slam is not going to happen in 2016. But The Players is the next big event, and Jordan Spieth finished second here in his first try. Hopefully America’s Best Player makes the tournament interesting.

Tough Call it’s all about the rules by Kathy Bissell
There are few topics in golf that get people really excited, and one of the most volatile and annoying is when people call in about what they think is a rules violation. There are several famous instances of this happening – and not usually to the benefit of the player involved. Many baby boomer golfers remember the time Craig Stadler got down on his knees to hit a shot from under a pine tree in the third round of the PGA Tour event in San Diego. He carefully put a towel down on the ground because he did not want to get debris and mud on his slacks. Then he hit he shot. Someone called in a day later and said Stadler had “built a stance” which is not allowed and is a two-stroke penalty. He did not know he was building a stance. He thought he was keeping his pants clean. Because the call came in the next day, however – well after Stadler had signed his scorecard – he was disqualified from the tournament for signing an incorrect card. Unfortunately, he would have finished relatively high up in the event, and so the call cost him a significant amount of money. It’s just one of the examples of call-in rulings that affected outcomes. Thankfully, that rule has recently been modified with Rule 6-6D exception, pointed out by PGA Tour rules guru Steve Carmen: “If a competitor returns a score for any hole lower than actually taken due to failure to include one or more penalty strokes that, before returning his score card, he did not know he had incurred, he is not disqualified. In such circumstances, the competitor incurs the penalty prescribed by the applicable rule and an additional penalty of two strokes for each hole at which the competitor has committed a breach of Rule 6-6d. This exception does not apply when the applicable penalty is disqualification from the competition.” More recently, there was the brouhaha over Tiger Wood’s golf ball in the third round of the 2013 BMW Championship. His ball, he said, oscillated. But a worm-cam view with extra warp, magic-power zoom that made the golf ball the size of a softball showed that the ball slightly shifted down from its original location in a pile of leaves and other debris. Woods would have to have been on his stomach with a monster magnifying glass to see it shift down at all. Woods insisted the ball only oscillated, because that’s what he saw, but once the footage was shown to rules officials, they had no choice but 86 THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP GUIDE 2016
to assess a two-stroke penalty for playing from the wrong place, under 20-7c. Today that situation would be handled under a new rule, 18-4, which has to do with technology revealing instances that can’t be seen with the naked eye. During the second round of this year’s Masters, Zach Johnson was attempting to hit out of Rae’s Creek, which is a hazard, when his club inadvertently touched the surface of the water on his takeaway. Johnson said later that he was unaware his club touched the water, but someone in the TV trucks had the shot and looked at it, and they showed it to Johnson, and he agreed he had. If Johnson had signed for a lower score and then got notification of the rules breach, he would have been allowed to continue in the tournament but he would have added the two strokes. These days on the PGA Tour, once a tournament is over no amount of calling on Monday will change the results from the previous week. The result is the result, even if someone somewhere believes there’s been a rules infraction. When it’s over, it’s over. That’s why rules officials like to get these things handled immediately. Long-time PGA Tour Rules Official Mark Russell gave his opinion on these issues. “First of all, most of the people who call in don’t know what they’re talking about,” Russell explained. “Occasionally we will talk to somebody who will know what they are talking about, and we’ll go take a look at it.” PGA Tour players, as one might imagine, have pretty specific opinions on this issue. “I don’t particularly care for it,” Zach Johnson has said. “I don’t necessarily like the fans calling up. At the same time, you want fans to watch.” Billy Horschel agrees. “Let us players do our thing,” he said. “I don’t think the PGA Tour, NBC, CBS, Golf Channel, ESPN should be answering their phones if someone calls in.” Brandt Snedeker, meanwhile, said he thinks fans calling in supposed rules infractions is bad for the game of golf. “I feel like one of the great things about the game of golf we play and the reasons why we enjoy it so much is there’s integrity and honor in it,” Snedeker said. “People calling in stuff all the time, I don’t think it adds to the game in any way, shape or form. I think they’re trying to catch guys in a gotcha kind of moment and I don’t think that’s the intention of what the rules are.”
