ARTISTIC DIRECTOR MESSAGE Dear Friends, Welcome to the kickoff of Grand Rapids Ballet’s 50th Anniversary with Ben Stevenson’s Cinderella! I am overjoyed that we are back onstage at DeVos Performance Hall to celebrate this important milestone, performing this elegant production, never seen before in Grand Rapids! Grand Rapids Ballet was officially formed in 1972, and in 1987 we presented our first version of Cinderella, representing one of our first full-length productions. It is only fitting that 35 years later we are returning to this classic tale, highlighting our professional company of dancers from around the world, as well as our continued partnership with the Grand Rapids Symphony. Cinderella tells a timeless story of true love, of good intentions and generosity winning out over evil, and forgiveness. Ben Stevenson, O.B.E., artistic director of Texas Ballet Theater, choreographed his version combining the beauty of classical ballet with adept storytelling and humor. His sensitive musicality and adherence to Sergei Prokofiev’s score round out this magical piece of theater. Stevenson’s Cinderella has been seen for over 50 years around the world, performed by many great dancers such as Margot Fonteyn, and presented by renowned companies such as American Ballet Theater. I am proud to add Grand Rapids Ballet to that remarkable list, and our dancers have been eager to rise to the task. CINDERELLA | CREATORS BEN STEVENSON, O.B.E. CHOREOGRAPHER Ben Stevenson served as artistic director of Houston Ballet from 1976-2003, raising the company from a regional troupe of twenty-eight dancers to an internationally acclaimed ensemble of over fifty artists. For his contributions to international dance, Mr. Stevenson was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by Queen Elizabeth II in the New Year’s Honors List in December 1999. In April 2000, he was presented with the Dance Magazine Award. In July 2003, he was appointed artistic director emeritus of Houston Ballet, and the company’s affiliated school was renamed Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy. Mr. Stevenson, a native of Portsmouth, England, received his dance training at the Arts Educational School in London. He appeared with the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet and English National Ballet where, as a principal dancer, he performed leading roles in all the classics. In 1967, English National Ballet asked him to stage his first, and highly successful, production of The Sleeping Beauty, which starred Margot Fonteyn. In 1968, Rebekah Harkness invited him to New York to direct the newly formed Harkness Youth Dancers. After choreographing Cinderella in 1970 for the National Ballet in Washington, D.C., he joined the company in 1971 as co-director with Frederic Franklin. Mr. Stevenson has received numerous awards for his choreography, including three gold medals at the International Ballet Competitions of 1972, 1982, and 1986. In 2018, Mr. Stevenson was acknowledged by the Chinese government as one of the most influential Foreign Experts in the past 40 years since China initiated its policy on Reform and Opening Up. In July 2003, Mr. Stevenson assumed the artistic directorship of Texas Ballet Theater in Fort Worth, Texas.

SERGEI PROKOFIEV

COMPOSER Russian composer and pianist Sergei Prokofiev was born in 1891 in Sontsovka, a small village in Ukraine. Early on, it was clear that he had musical talent. His mother, who was a very good pianist, encouraged him, and taught him to play the piano. Sergei began composing at the age of five. When he got a bit older, he and his mother moved to St. Petersburg, so that he could study music there. After Prokofiev graduated from school, he traveled around Europe to learn more about music. World War I and the Russian Revolution made living and working in Russia very difficult, so Prokofiev left the country in 1918. Paris eventually became his home, but he also spent time in the United States and the Bavarian Alps. But the whole time he was away from Russia, Prokofiev longed for his homeland. In 1936, he made the unusual decision to move back to the Soviet Union. Prokofiev was a master at using music to tell a story. One of his most famous musical stories is Peter and the Wolf, which was written for Russia’s Central Children’s Theatre. In addition to symphonic music, Prokofiev wrote ballets, operas, and music for films — including Lieutenant Kijé and Romeo and Juliet.

CINDERELLA | STORY ACT I

ACT II

Cinderella’s stepmother, father, and stepsisters are busy planning for the palace ball. Cinderella enters and is ordered to clean the room. She picks up the broom, starts to sweep, then takes a portrait of her mother from its hiding place and gazes at it longingly. Her father returns and is overcome with remorse when he sees the resemblance between Cinderella and his first wife. His daughter lovingly tries to reassure him, but they are dragged apart by the stepsisters, who also snatch away the picture.

At the palace, a jester welcomes the arriving guests. The prince enters and greets them, then invites each of the stepsisters to dance with him. The ball is interrupted by the arrival of Cinderella in her coach, and the prince immediately falls in love with her. The guests are offered oranges, the rarest fruit in the land, and when one of the stepsisters is left without one, Cinderella gives up her own while concealing her identity. The price and Cinderella are dancing together when the clock strikes midnight. Cinderella’s clothes turn to rags and she rushes from the ballroom. The prince finds one of her glass slippers left behind.

Suddenly, the door opens and an old beggar-woman enters. The stepmother gives her the picture of Cinderella’s mother to get rid of it, but the beggar hands it back to her. Cinderella offers the old woman some bread, which she accepts and then departs. A dressmaker and wigmaker arrive to dress the stepsisters for the ball. Then a master attempts to teach the stepsisters to dance. The family departs for the ball, without Cinderella who must remain behind. She tries to console her loneliness by pretending that the kitchen broom is her partner at the ball, but she bursts into tears. The beggar-woman returns and changes into a fairy godmother. She transforms the kitchen into a forest, complete with dragonflies swooping among the trees. The fairy godmother gives Cinderella a pair of glass slippers. The fairies of spring, summer, autumn, and winter perform for her, changing the seasons as they dance. Cinderella’s rags become a beautiful gown. The fairy godmother warns her that at midnight the magic gown will change back into her rags. She then magically transforms a pumpkin and four mice into a coach and horses, and Cinderella is driven to the ball like a princess.

* 15-Minute Intermission * ACT III Back in the kitchen, Cinderella remembers the ball as a beautiful dream and finds the remaining glass slipper in one of her pockets. She quickly hides it as the stepsisters return, proudly displaying the oranges from the prince. The stepmother announces the arrival of the prince in search of the owner of the glass slipper. Each of the stepsisters tries to squeeze their oversized foot into the tiny slipper. When the prince notices Cinderella, he asks her father if she may try it on. As she moves to do so, the second slipper falls from her pocket. The prince is overjoyed and asks her to marry him. Cinderella forgives her stepmother and stepsisters. As the prince returns the glass slipper to the fairy godmother, the kitchen is transformed into a magical field where Cinderella and her prince dance a romantic pas de deux. The guests return to celebrate their new princess.

MOVING WITH PARKINSON’S At Grand Rapids Ballet School, we believe in the therapeutic power of dance. Our Moving with Parkinson’s is a dance therapy class made specifically for people with Parkinson’s Disease, geared towards mobility. GRBS is proud to continue to partner with the Parkinson’s Association of West Michigan to offer free weekly classes throughout the year for adults in the West Michigan community with Parkinson’s Disease. We offer classes at our Grand Rapids facility as well as satellite classes in Holland. Moving with Parkinson’s dancers enjoy spending time in a supportive community, focusing on holistic and restorative movement. “The Moving with Parkinson’s class helps me walk with a more even gait; improves my balance; strengthens cognitive skills and provides a much-needed social outlet.” - Sharon S. “I have been attending the Moving with Parkinson’s class for 8 years. It is one of the most positive activities I have participated in. It lets me slow down, forget the challenges I face each day, and enjoy being mindful of that moment. Attila is a wonderful teacher and the piano music adds to the joy of being part of something freeing. It is a special part of my week.” - Mary B. “Attila is our wonderful, patient teacher.
