2015 – 2016 FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Step onto the runway with us this fall at GRAM! We’re thrilled to present Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion, an in-depth look into the world of Dutch fashion designer, Iris van Herpen. Our entire Level III galleries will be transformed with 45 haute couture designs from 15 of her collections, each drawing inspiration from the world around her—using nature as her muse for pieces that evoke the transparency of smoke, the delicacy of ice, or the fluidity of falling water. Her cutting edge designs are an artistic statement, involving technological research and an exploration of big ideas that capture her imagination. Van Herpen has gained international acclaim for her combination of traditional craftsmanship and futuristic, innovative techniques—including some of the world’s first examples of 3-D-printed fashion. Within the exhibition you’ll find interactive displays with samples of her materials, offering the chance to touch and experience the innovative materials firsthand—on view in Grand Rapids straight from her studio in Amsterdam. Running concurrently with Transforming Fashion is an exciting series of lectures featuring a diverse lineup of presenters who are pioneers in their fields, from decorative arts and design, to costume concept illustration, and innovative materials research.

Cutting-edge designs by van Herpen have been worn by style icons such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, and Björk and have electrified the runways of Amsterdam, London, and Paris. Iris van Herpen has gained international acclaim for her combination of traditional craftsmanship and futuristic, innovative techniques—including some of the world’s first examples of 3-D-printed fashion. Her visually impressive, sculptural designs often feature unusual materials such as umbrella ribs and synthetic boat rigging. She produced her first collection in 2007, shortly after graduating from the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in the Netherlands. Born in the small town of Wamel, she is now based primarily in Amsterdam. In 2012 she became a member of the exclusive Chambre Syndicale de Haute Couture, where her designs regularly appear in biannual Paris runway shows. Van Herpen divides her time between the contained world of her studio, her global network of collaborators, and the international stage of fashion. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion features 45 haute couture outfits carefully selected from 15 of van Herpen’s collections designed from 2008 through 2015: 18 pieces from the designer’s most recent lines, a selection of her shoe designs, and 27 pieces from van Herpen’s solo exhibition at the Groninger Museum, Netherlands.

For me fashion is an expression of art that is very closely related to me and to my body. I see it as my expression of identity combined with desire, moods, and cultural setting. Wearing clothing creates an exciting and imperative form of self-expression. ‘Form follows function’ is not a slogan with which I concur. On the contrary, I find that forms complement and change the body and thus the emotion. — Iris van Herpen

Visitors will have the opportunity to get hands-on with van Herpen’s innovative materials. Reproductions of six of her most unusual materials will be available for guests to touch for themselves, including translucent stainless steel fabric and structures made from the ribs of children’s umbrellas. Many of van Herpen’s materials are the result of close collaboration with architects, artists, and engineers who bring their expertise to the material technology behind van Herpen’s bold visions. Iris van Herpen: Transforming Fashion is co-organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta and the Groninger Museum, the Netherlands. The exhibition was curated by Sarah Schleuning, High Museum of Art, and Mark Wilson and Sue-an van der Zijpp, Goninger Museum. Support for this exhibition has generously been provided by Creative Industries Fund NL. GRAM is one of only seven North American venues for Transforming Fashion.

NOW AT THE GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM

Though her exquisite garments are fabricated using breakthrough 21st century technology, Iris van Herpen has clearly been influenced by the long, exciting history of fashion. Like her mentor Alexander McQueen, van Herpen displays a profound knowledge of and respect for the past. This presentation by Suzanne Eberle will outline some of the ways her designs have been inspired by a rich, international sartorial history, from Japanese samurai armor and Elizabethan underwear to 19th and 20th Century haute couture. Suzanne Eberle, Ph.D.

Suzanne Eberle is a professor of Art History at Kendall College of Art & Design, where she is chair of that program and has taught since 1979. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Detroit, and her areas of specialization include Modern and Contemporary Art, with an emphasis on issues related to the presentation of the body in art, including the history of fashion. Your support ensures that GRAM can continue to present exceptional programs like these and enables us to continue our collaborative efforts with many of the outstanding cultural and civic institutions in our community.

How can you help? You can contribute today with a tax-deductible gift by returning the enclosed envelope, by making a secure, online donation at artmuseumgr.org/annual-fund, or by contacting the Advancement Office at 616.831.2907. DeLapa Gift to the Collection GRAM is honored to announce the recent acquisition of Lilla Cabot Perry’s painting In the Studio, which was purchased with funds generously donated by longtime GRAM supporters, James and Judith DeLapa. As a mother of three daughters, Lilla Cabot Perry did not begin to paint seriously until she was in her thirties. Born and raised in Boston, she was an outstanding and creative student affiliated with The Boston School, a group of painters who portrayed the restrained elegance of Bostonian society in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. Perry painted both figural studies and landscapes. Her landscapes were influenced by Impressionism, while her figurative paintings drew attention to their subject’s character. Her eldest daughter, Margaret, is the subject of In the Studio, where she can be seen sitting at a desk writing a letter. She may have also been playing the violin that rests on the desk beside her. Both pursuits were considered appropriate for

well-raised young women of the time. Perry has portrayed Margaret at a moment when she has paused her pen, determining what next to write, giving the viewer insight into her thoughtfulness and intellect.
