27—Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present and Michigan Artist Series Dylan Miner: Water is Sacred // Trees are Relatives. Organized by the Brooklyn Museum, Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present is comprised of over 200 images in color and black-and-white from the past 175 years by more than 150 photographers across six continents. You’ll see classic images of legendary athletes and historic action shots, as well as pictures taken behind-the-scenes and on the sidelines. This exhibition demonstrates how photo technology and its practitioners were able to capture the human body in motion with astonishing technique and artistry. After the member exhibition opening, continue the celebration of Who Shot Sports after-hours at GRAM After Dark: Jock Jams for an evening of drinks, sportswear, prizes, and dancing to your favorite tunes with DJ AB. The latest installment of GRAM’s Michigan Artist Series, Dylan Miner: Water is Sacred // Trees are Relatives, focuses on the natural environment of West Michigan and its history. Miner investigates the important historical and current issues around three primary natural elements: wood, water, and sky, and the traditional knowledge and beliefs around them within Great Lakes Indigenous cultures. This exhibition brings to focus the natural elements that make Michigan so unique and important. An accompanying artist book featuring works produced by Indigenous youth during a set of collaborative workshops will be published by Issue Press of Grand Rapids.

Photography and sports have been entwined since the invention of photography in the 19th century. However, the artistry of shooting sports has been underappreciated in comparison to other genres within the medium. Sports are all about movement and motion, and this exhibition demonstrates how photographic technology enabled its practitioners to capture the human body in motion as it had never been seen before, all with astonishing technique and artistry.

Comprising over 200 images in color and black-and-white from the past 175 years, Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present presents an astonishing diversity of work by more than 150 photographers. The exhibition includes classic images of legendary athletes and historic action shots, as well as pictures taken behind-the-scenes and on the sidelines. Sports familiar and unfamiliar are represented, in photographs taken across six continents. Fans and spectators worldwide are portrayed, too, demonstrating an enthusiasm for sports that transcends national borders and socioeconomic levels. Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present is organized by the Brooklyn Museum and curated by Gail Buckland, Benjamin Menschel Distinguished Visiting Professor at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

LECTURE Why Sports Photography at Museums Now? Saturday, October 27, 2018 2 pm – 3:30 pm Free for members, free with admission

MICHIGAN ARTIST SERIES Dylan Miner: Water is Sacred // Trees are Relatives October 27, 2018 – March 3, 2019

Join us for a presentation by Gail Buckland, exhibition curator of Who Shot Sports. Learn about the stories behind the powerful images on view and Buckland’s motivations for taking on this enormous and exciting project—one being that photographs of sports have mostly been left out of the canon of photographic history. Their ability to powerfully and concisely visualize human endurance, beauty, and aspiration has been discounted, or not recognized as parallel to similar achievements in other art forms. This exhibition seeks to reevaluate these compelling images and contextualize them within the history of photography. Following the lecture, stick around for an exhibition catalouge signing with Buckland.

Capturing the Winning Moment Tour Thursday, November 1, 2018 6 pm – 8 pm $10 per GRAM member, $15 per adult Join us for a unique tour that showcases what it takes to photograph the winning moment. Meet several local professional sports photographers and athletes as they guide you through the exhibition, stopping to share their insight on certain works along the way, and moments from their own career that relate to the exhibition. Participants enjoy light snacks and a special keepsake. Space is limited. RSVP by calling 616.831.2930 or online at artmuseumgr.org/winningmoment.

East Lansing-based artist and activist Dylan Miner debuts new work that focuses on the natural environment of West Michigan and its history. Miner is a Michigan native of Wiisaakodewinini (Métis) descent. In Water is Sacred // Trees are Relatives, Miner investigates the important historical and current issues around three primary natural elements: wood, water, and sky, and the traditional knowledge and beliefs around them within Great Lakes Indigenous cultures. This exhibition features a series of large-scale cyanotype photographs on fabric that portray images of cloudy skies and water surfaces. For Miner, the blue color of the cyanotype process evokes water and sky, and also has symbolic correspondence to Michigan’s history around Indigenous issues of sovereignty. Rounding out the exhibition are site-specific sculptural elements crafted specifically for the exhibition from old growth timber and other arboreal materials. The project also includes a series of workshops Miner has devised in collaboration with two younger Indigenous artists based in Grand Rapids, who will lead cyanotype-making workshops with West Michigan Indigenous youth at selected regional locales. Works produced by these youth, as well as Miner’s work at the Museum, will be compiled in an accompanying artist’s book to be published by Issue Press of Grand Rapids.

Coming Soon

A Decade at the Center: Recent Gifts and Acquisitions January 26 – April 28, 2019 GRAM closes out a yearlong celebration of the Museum’s first decade at 101 Monroe Center with an exhibition featuring works of art and design acquired through gift and purchase in commemoration of this auspicious anniversary. Prepare for the unveiling of some special new acquisitions, from 19th century paintings to modern furniture, vintage photographs

to rare Renaissance era engravings, and historical design objects to contemporary art. Artists in the exhibition include Mathias Alten, Monir Farmanfarmaian, Janet Fish, Alfred Stieglitz, James Van Der Zee, and Rembrandt van Rijin among many others. With this exhibition, GRAM celebrates the crucial role of gifts in our ongoing effort to build one of the most notable collections in the American Midwest. Since the Museum’s inception in 1910, the generosity of our patrons has been crucial to building our permanent collection of over 6,000 objects.

SAVE THE DATE Art in Bloom March 22 – 24, 2019 Art in Bloom will return this spring for a bi-annual one-weekend-only exhibition that celebrates the combined beauty of art and floral design. Visitors will be invited to tour the galleries and enjoy extravagant floral sculptures inspired by works from the Museum’s permanent collection created by some of the region’s most talented floral designers. These floral sculptures emphasize, challenge and build upon elements and concepts within the original work of art, creating an extraordinary dialogue between two pieces. Above: Willam Merritt Chase.
