The Grand Rapids Art Museum is delighted to present our exhibitions for the upcoming season—Michigan Artist Series, Billy Mayer: The Shape of Things and opening October 12, David Wiesner & The Art of Wordless Storytelling. Showcasing 70 original watercolors as well as a selection of early sketches and notebooks, David Wiesner & The Art of Wordless Storytelling is an exploration of Wiesner’s incredible imagination and careful attention to detail. Wiesner’s wordless books focus on the collaboration between artist and audience as they allow readers to form their own interpretations of the images. We hope you’ll join us the morning following the member exhibition opening for Coffee With the Artist: David Wiesner, where we’ll enjoy coffee, conversation, and a guided tour of the exhibition with the acclaimed illustrator. This season’s installment of GRAM’s Michigan Artist Series, Billy Mayer: The Shape of Things, celebrates the late artist and Hope College professor’s unique work. Employing a remarkable range of materials and styles, Mayer’s work juxtaposes the familiar with the unexpected, as seen in the installation Here, which is comprised of over 400 small clay skulls topped with individual everyday objects. We’re also excited to present our exhibition, Relevant: Abstraction from GRAM’s Collection, which is guest-curated by Juana Williams, the Exhibitions Curator at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (UICA). Relevant is an assemblage of 11 abstract paintings and works on paper from GRAM’s permanent collection that explores the continued relevance of abstraction as an art form and allows viewers the chance to discover something new in GRAM’s Level 3 gallery. This autumn at GRAM is buzzing with fun and educational activities for people of all ages. Saturday, November 16 is Family Day! Highlighting David Wiesner & The Art of Wordless Storytelling, the day is packed with activities including drop-in costume-making, a scavenger hunt, sketching tours, and a musical presentation in the Auditorium. Throughout the season, don’t miss out on Drop-in Studio events where you’ll have the chance to create with clay, graphite, watercolor, and other mediums while exploring wordless storytelling. Lastly, be sure to take advantage of all of the educational opportunities for children as well, like our Parent and Child Workshop on making board books, and Baby and Me Tours for the little ones. I look forward to seeing you at GRAM this season! Warmly,

David Wiesner & The Art of Wordless Storytelling October 12, 2019 – January 12, 2020 David Wiesner & The Art of Wordless Storytelling presents a colorful survey of the career of one of the most highly acclaimed book illustrators in the world. David Wiesner (b. 1956) is a master of storytelling through pictures and three-time winner of the Caldecott Medal. Wiesner’s body of work explores the complexity of human imagination through richly layered imagery, clever composition, and humor.
His many books have delighted readers of all ages for three decades with wildly imaginative tales that capture the joy of pictures and stories. The exhibition features 70 original watercolors from some of
language and predictive reasoning skills. Activities within the
Wiesner’s most beloved books, including the Caldecott Medal winners Tuesday (1991), The Three Pigs (2001), and Flotsam (2006). Examples of Wiesner’s earliest artistic successes are on view, too, as well as sketches and notebooks revealing his time-consuming creative process, which culminates in the enchanting watercolor paintings that anchor the exhibition. Because these original works are rarely seen, the meticulous processes through which Wiesner achieves his seemingly effortless effects are rarely apprehended. Viewing these works in person, as opposed to their reproductions in books, reveals the multiple layers of watercolor that Wiesner uses to create the exquisitely nuanced hues that bring each piece to life.
exhibition for children, families, and adults have been created to further inspire these skills and create fun experiences for visitors of all ages.
Wiesner began his career providing illustrations for the children’s literary magazine Cricket in 1979 and then undertook a series of collaborations with children’s book authors throughout the 1980s. Free Fall (1988), Wiesner’s first solo work and his first published wordless book, took him three years to complete. Its story, which imagines a boy’s sleeping dreamscapes, is contained within one continuous composition that morphs from one scene to the next. After it was chosen as a Caldecott Honor Book in 1988, Wiesner determined from then on to focus exclusively on his own visual storytelling. In the works that came after, including Tuesday and June 29, 1999, he continued to explore storytelling as a collaboration between artist and audience. Wiesner says, “I don’t have to concern myself about whether the reader’s interpretation of each and every detail is the same as mine.” He hopes viewers will actively engage with his work, making connections and creating their own meaning—an engagement that is particularly important for young children, who develop visual literacy well before they are able to read. Wiesner’s wordless narratives demand attention and deduction from their readers and encourage expressive

MICHIGAN ARTIST SERIES
Billy Mayer: The Shape of Things August 24, 2019 – February 2, 2020 One of Michigan’s most distinctive and unique sculptors, the late Billy Mayer (1953-2017) created work in numerous media and materials that addressed the mundane elements of daily life, as well as bigger, broader ideas about human existence. Billy Mayer: The Shape of Things brings together both large and small-scale sculpture that demonstrate Mayer’s creative imagination and his impressive range of interests and sources, from Surrealism and Pop Art to souvenir kitsch. Mayer’s meticulously crafted sculptures juxtapose familiar elements in unexpected arrangements that seem conjured from a parallel reality or dream state.

Relevant: Abstraction from GRAM’s Collection September 6, 2019 – January 5, 2020 Relevant: Abstraction from GRAM’s Collection is an exhibition guest-curated by Juana Williams, Exhibitions Curator at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art (UICA). GRAM occasionally invites guest curators to work with GRAM’s collection to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to our members and visitors. For Relevant, Williams has assembled 11 abstract paintings and works on paper from GRAM’s permanent collection, most created by artists a half-century or more after abstraction’s invention in the early 20th century. A native of Detroit, Williams earned a Master of Fine Arts at Wayne State University and held positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and the Detroit Institute of Arts before joining the UICA in 2018. Relevant is on view concurrently with the UICA’s exhibition SPECTRA, also curated by Williams. Conceived as two parts of a whole, Relevant and SPECTRA examine abstract art through historical and contemporary lenses and show how abstraction has remained relevant for over 100 years.

A New State of Matter: Contemporary Glass January 25, 2020 – April 26, 2020 Glass can be translucent, transparent, or opaque; it can refract images or reflect them back to the viewer; it is strong, yet delicate. These qualities make glass perfectly suited for artists to explore fragility, resiliency, transparency, and transformation. This exhibition features work by contemporary artists who are using glass in innovative ways while also presenting its metaphorical possibilities. Their artwork also connects to broader cultural, environmental, political, and spiritual themes. The exhibition includes work by 19 artists, including Grand Rapids artist Norwood Viviano. Viviano fuses fine arts practice with data and research findings in geography, economics, and the social sciences to create environments in which sensuous beauty and topical information
coalesce. Viviano has said that, “the fragility of glass serves as a metaphor for balance between time, efficiency, and the inability of manufacturing to change and meet future needs.” This exhibition is organized by the Boise Art Museum. A New State of Matter is sponsored by the Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation with additional grant support from the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass.
