celebration of its tenth anniversary at 101 Monroe Center, opening on January 26: A Decade at the Center: Recent Gifts design acquired through gift and purchase and spans all areas in which GRAM collects, including important work by artists Mathias Alten, Richard Diebenkorn, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Alex Katz, and Dawoud Bey. Just like the permanent collection, GRAM’s dedicated patrons and donors are at the heart of the Museum, and their generous support has been essential to building our holding of over 6,000 objects. I invite you to explore the many works new to the collection in this exhibition and discover the broad spectrum of human creativity and innovation on view. Returning this March is GRAM’s bi-annual one-weekend-only exhibition, Art in Bloom, celebrating the combined beauty of art and floral design. Come see the first signs of spring at GRAM while touring the galleries and enjoying extravagant floral sculptures! Mingle with fellow art and floral lovers at the opening reception on Friday, March 22, and participate in a whole host of events that weekend, from wine and artmaking at Creativity Uncorked, to live classical music at the Sunday Classical Concert Series. Most importantly, don’t forget to vote for your favorite entries and help choose the People’s Choice Award! The winter schedule is packed with art-making workshops, new ways to tour the Museum, and events that everyone in the family can enjoy. Bring your budding artist to Drop-in Studio on Saturday afternoons to enjoy hands-on art-making and gallery activities inspired by the works on view. Adults can enjoy a night out at Creativity Uncorked where you’ll enjoy drinks, music, and mingling with follow art lovers, all while learning a new creative skill taught by a knowledgeable instructor. I hope you’ll join us for our popular Sunday Classical Concert Series, happening on Sunday afternoons this winter. We have a great line up of returning favorites as well as new performers. Following the concerts, join a drop-in tour and explore our galleries to experience both live music and engaging art in the beautiful atmosphere at GRAM. Come for the music—stay for the art! Warmly,

Dana Friis-Hansen, Director and CEO

The Grand Rapids Art Museum closes out a yearlong celebration of the Museum’s first decade at 101 Monroe Center with an exhibition featuring gifts and acquisitions to the permanent collection from the last five years. The exhibition spans all areas in which GRAM collects, from 19th century paintings to contemporary art, mid-century modern furniture to vintage photography, and rare Renaissance engravings to historical design objects. Many of the works are on public view for the first time.

GRAM’s commitment to exhibiting and collecting design and craft is illustrated by the inclusion of important works of furniture, ceramics, glass, and other design objects. On view for the first time are several pieces from a major new gift of over 100 design objects from one of the premier American collectors. This generous gift will greatly expand the museum’s design holdings and better tell the story of West Michigan’s rich history as a leading center of design and manufacturing.

The exhibition comprises recent museum purchases, as well as gifts and promised gifts from numerous generous individuals and institutions. In some cases, these acquisitions expand the museum’s holding of works by particular artists, such as Mathias J. Alten, Andy Warhol, Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, Richard Diebenkorn, and Alex Katz, or, introduce important artists new to the collection, including Oswaldo Vigas, Dawoud Bey, and Carrie Mae Weems. A pair of 15th century engravings by Martin Schongauer are the oldest works in the exhibition, promised gifts of Cate and Sid Jansma Jr., founders of GRAM’s extraordinary Jansma Print Collection. Notable new contemporary works will be on view as well, including a print by American artist Kara Walker in her recognizable silhouette-style, a promised gift from Martin and Enid Packard, important long-time supporters of GRAM.

With this exhibition, GRAM celebrates the crucial role of gifts in our ongoing effort to build one of the most notable collections in the American Midwest. Since the Museum’s inception in 1910, the generosity of our patrons has been crucial to building our permanent collection of over 6,000 objects.

Support for this exhibition is generously provided by: Wege Foundation James and Mary Nelson Dirk and June Hoffius Cate and Sid Jansma, Jr. Greg and Meg Willit Kurt and Madelon Hassberger Haworth, Inc. Additional funding provided by the GRAM Exhibition Society. Listing as of print date. Image: Lilla Cabot Perry, In the Studio, (detail) c. 1895. A Conversation with Meg Goebel GRAM Foundation Board Trustee and Legacy Society Member

Where do you feel the most fulfilled regarding your contributions to GRAM? Meg Goebel: I feel most fulfilled as a member of GRAM’s Legacy Society—by contributing my personal art collection to the Museum on a yearly basis. The Legacy Society is important to me because if I can make a significant contribution to a cultural institution like the Grand Rapids Art Museum, one that will help them continue their mission and important programs into the future, that is what matters. You’ve made a very generous legacy pledge to the Museum with your collection. Can you talk a little bit about what brought you to that decision? This is a significant way to impact an institution. Meg Goebel: I’ve always felt that it was important to take care of my estate. I didn’t want to have the executives of my estate worry about how to get rid of it, or where it should go,

Meg Goebel How have art museums impacted your life? Meg Goebel: Art museums are an integral part of any community—not only do they introduce people to the artwork, but invites them to participate in educational programming and engaging discussions about art. You have a passion for collecting. And that is putting it mildly. Can you talk a little bit about your decision making process when purchasing a piece? Meg Goebel: For me, the art that I’ve chosen is always emotional. I’ve collected art from all over the world, and it’s a situation where I look at it and I say, ‘I don’t think I can live without this piece.’ It has to touch me. I bought one piece for investment purposes, and it was a big bust, so I learned my lesson that that’s not what you do. So I know parents aren’t supposed to say they have a favorite child, but... do you have a piece that really is your favorite? Meg Goebel: Yes, the first piece I collected. It was back in the mid-‘80s, and I was down at a gallery in New Orleans, and I passed this gallery where there was a work by LeRoy Neiman called Lady Skier. It was a blonde woman skiing down the mountain, with her mouth wide open in a big smile, and going about a hundred miles an hour, and I went, ‘Well that’s me! Mr. Neiman must have seen me ski!’ That was the first major piece I bought and it’s still my favorite to this day.

so to me, GRAM was its home. These are people that know art, and they will preserve the artwork for others to enjoy in the future. To me it was a very, very simple decision, and one that I am so happy about.

Contribute to GRAM’s future by planning for a special kind of gift! Donors who contribute through a planned gift or make a provision for the Museum in their estate plans are eligible to join the Legacy Society. Legacy gifts strengthen the Museum’s endowment, providing much-needed annual income that helps the museum continue to present exhibitions of significant importance, weekend family programming, and collaborations with schools and cultural institutions. As the endowment grows, so does the Museum’s secure future. It’s easy to become a GRAM Legacy Society member. • • • •

There is no minimum gift Your gift information can be completely confidential at your request One of the easiest and most popular ways of making a Legacy Gift is to remember GRAM in your will. In addition to a gift in your will, there are other ways you may make a legacy gift. You can name the Museum as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Doing so is as simple as filling out a beneficiary designation form from your plan provider or administrator.

For more information about GRAM’s Legacy Society, or to join, please contact Elly Barnette-Dawson at elly@artmuseumgr.org.

Coming Soon This Summer

Maya Lin: Art and Environment May 18 – September 1, 2019

Lin’s Ecliptic, which has transformed downtown Grand Rapids’ Rosa Parks Circle into a central gathering space in the heart of the city.

GRAM is excited to announce a summer 2019 exhibition featuring the work of renowned artist, architect, and designer Maya Lin. Organized by GRAM in collaboration with Lin’s studio, Art and Environment focuses on large-scale sculpture that demonstrates Lin’s fascination with water as a subject. Created in materials such as silver, carved and polished marble, steel, and building materials, Lin’s work is conceived through the meticulous use of charting, mapping, and scientific research in determining each sculpture’s ultimate design, layout, and structure.

Maya Lin (b. 1959) interprets the natural world through science, culture, history, and contemporary issues, and has created internationally renowned works of art and architecture over the past four decades. Lin designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as an undergraduate student at Yale, and went on to design significant works including the Civil Rights Memorial in Alabama, the Women’s Table at Yale, and The Wave Field at the University of Michigan. Lin’s work has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums worldwide and is in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, among others.

The focus on water and the environment is relevant now more than ever, and Lin’s compelling artworks will help raise environmental awareness and challenge visitors to ponder humanity’s relationship with the natural world. The exhibition also celebrates the approaching 20th anniversary of Maya

This same emphasis is revisited every two years at the Venice Biennale, and is also the lived experience at two exceptional hotels where you’ll stay: Gio Ponti’s Parco dei Principi in Sorrento overlooking the Bay of Naples and Byblos Art Hotel in the rolling hills outside of Verona. Along the way meet local experts, enjoy wonderful dining experiences and boat rides, and have lots of opportunities to explore on your own.

CORPORATE PARTNER SPOTLIGHT Varsity News Network For many, West Michigan isn’t the first place that they’d think of when they hear the words tech start- up. But Varsity News Network (VNN) is here to change that. VNN is a Grand Rapids-based high school sports software company, currently working with about 20% of all US high schools across 39 states. VNN started in 2015 with two people, and now employ nearly 70, which makes them the largest, fastest-growing high school sports communication company in the US. It all started with the idea that all sports programs should have the opportunity to get the same level of publicity as football and basketball. Since then, their team has built products, apps, and connected with other like-minded software companies to help athletic directors get the word out about the great things their athletes are doing and make local communities a better place to be.

GRAM Receives GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency Great news! The Grand Rapids Art Museum has earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar, the world’s largest source of nonprofit information. In our Guidestar profile, we chose to include quantitative metrics such as how many children are served through the Museum’s programs to represent how GRAM is working toward achieving our mission. By sharing these metrics, we’re helping the sector move beyond simplistic financial ratios to assess nonprofit progress. We’re proud to use GuideStar Platinum to share our full and complete story with the world. To reach the Platinum level, which is Guidestar’s highest level of transparency, we added extensive information to our Nonprofit Profile: comprehensive organizational information; in-depth financial information; quantitative information about goals, strategies, and progress toward our mission.

VNN Staff Romy Glazer, Head of Marketing, shared some personal thoughts about VNN’s role within the communities they serve. “As a relatively new start-up company that still spends other people’s money to grow quickly, we aren’t able to provide large-scale financial support for projects like some of the big players in town, so we structure our philanthropy in ways that we can to champion West Michigan as a place that is encouraging for the entrepreneur in all of us. One example is our collaboration with GRAM (advertising and grassroots marketing support for the Museum’s 2018 fall exhibition Who Shot Sports), providing access to the sports teams we connect to which helps promote the exhibition to our community.”
