We have an incredible summer in store for you at the Museum! From exciting exhibitions and outdoor concerts, to art-making workshops and member travel, everyone has an opportunity to join in on the fun! We’re thrilled to present our feature exhibition, The Collection in Context, a community-wide celebration showcasing some of our finest works in GRAM’s collection. Many individuals throughout Grand Rapids—teens, university students, arts professionals, and others—have collaborated with GRAM to explore the multiple meanings of art across centuries, disciplines, and genres. You’ll see some of your favorites from Andy Warhol, Richard Diebenkorn, and Alexander Calder, as well as some lesser-known treasures from the Museum’s collection. Opening May 19, the next installment of our Michigan Artist Series, Maureen Nollette: Honorable Ordinaries explores the beauty and meaning of repetitive patterns and grid systems through installations created from familiar household materials. Visitors are invited to take a seat and enjoy Maureen Nollette’s window installation on display in our light-filled East Court. GRAM on the Green returns this summer, and promises to be hotter than ever! Each Thursday evening from July 7 through August 11, join us on the Museum Terrace for exceptional live music from local acts like Vox Vidorra, The Crane Wives, and Grupo Aye. Make the most of your Thursday nights with cool drinks from the cash bar, dancing, and some of the best food trucks in town. New this season, we’ll have one late night from 9:00 pm – midnight. Once the sun goes down, you’re invited to dance the night away to house music by SuperDre and lazerz by AJPASCHKA. I look forward to seeing you around the Museum soon! Warmly,

Dana Friis-Hansen Director and CEO

The exhibition will feature many of GRAM's exciting new acquisitions and works of art never seen in Grand Rapids, such as Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe and Jun Kaneko’s Large Dango, alongside beloved classics by Alexander Calder, Mary Cassatt, Richard Diebenkorn, Paul Gauguin, and more. Important temporary loans round out the exhibition, including photography by Cindy Sherman, prints by Elizabeth Catlett, and new work from Anila Quayyum Agha.

The Collection in Context rearranges and remixes art work from different time periods, styles, and media to present new and unexpected ways of looking, learning, and responding to art. Art can inspire such varied, personal, and beautiful responses, depending on our own unique experiences and perspectives. The Collection in Context celebrates this variety of perspectives within our own community. A special element of the exhibition is the diverse interpretations of artwork by Grand Rapids community members, which will be featured in writing throughout the exhibition. A broad cross-section of individuals have participated in this effort, including artists, students, educators, spiritual leaders, historians, and activists. GRAM is excited to present its collection in this new way, and we hope you’ll share your own reactions, opinions, and responses to the works featured in The Collection in Context.

Chief Curator, Ron Platt, has arranged the exhibition into four distinct thematic groupings: The Evolving Landscape presents paintings and works on paper that embody humankind’s evolving relationship with the natural world and the changing ways we depict the natural world in art. Faith and Its Symbols includes works of art that incorporate the symbols and icons of the world’s major faiths: Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. These collected works demonstrate the interconnectedness of faith and symbolism and give insight into the cultures in which each object was produced. Nature-based Abstraction showcases abstract sculpture, painting, and decorative objects inspired by nature. Representing Women includes works featuring female subjects that reveal society’s changing attitudes toward women over the past two centuries.

Mirror Memory June 3, 2016 – August 21, 2016 Since its invention in the mid-19th century, photography has been crucial to how we see ourselves and the world we live in. Drawn entirely from GRAM’s permanent collection, Mirror Memory surveys two centuries of photographic landscapes, portraits, novelties, and experimental works, including examples of early daguerreotypes and tintypes, classic black and white images, and large-scale digital prints in bold color. Among the photographers represented are Berenice Abbott, Julia Margaret Cameron, Robert Frank, and Edward Steichen—some of the medium’s most prominent names. Mirror Memory refers to the term “the mirror with a memory,” which was coined to describe photography’s uncanny ability to capture and keep an image for all time. As this exhibition amply demonstrates, photography still has the power to fascinate, move, and challenge viewers. RIGHT: Gordon Parks (American, 1912–2006). Michigan Artist Series Maureen Nollette: Honorable Ordinaries May 19, 2016 – August 14, 2016 Maureen Nollette’s work explores the beauty and meaning of repetitive patterns, grid systems, and their collective place within both modern art and traditional textile crafts. Nollette’s installation of with/without is comprised of rows of chevrons in a decorative pattern that covers large portions of an exterior window. The viewer’s range of vision is influenced or obstructed by the pervasive shapes, allowing the choice to either see the chevrons, or see past them. The chevron, an angled shape that references the roof of a house, is an honorable ordinary that symbolizes protection. Honorable ordinaries are the original marks of distinction on coats-of-arms indicating the owner’s distinguished service. The chevron’s dual connotations of private home life and public service echoes the grid’s dual presence in domestic craft and fine art. ABOVE RIGHT: Maureen Nollette (American, b. 1964). Whistler and his Circle: Etchings from the Permanent Collection May 22, 2016 – August 14, 2016 James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) was an international artist, one of the 19th century’s true masters. His early paintings and prints were rooted in European Realism, and his etching style in particular drew inspiration from seventeenth-century Dutch artists such as Rembrandt. Whistler soon turned away from Realism toward a more expressive style, creating paintings, pastels, and prints of people and landscapes drawn with poetic suggestiveness rather than visual accuracy. The sketchy quality of his mature work was sometimes seen in a negative light, with critics accusing him of showing unfinished work. This lack of finish and detail had much in common with the art of the French Impressionists, who were then coming into prominence. Whistler had a full social and artistic life interacting with an extensive community of artists. This exhibition focuses on five of the artists who worked alongside him: Otto Bacher, Frank Duveneck, Francis Seymour Haden, Alphonse Legros, and Mortimer Menpes,

as well as other artists who knew Whistler personally, including Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, and James Tissot. All of the prints in the exhibition were created during Whistler’s lifetime, giving the viewer a unique window into the artistic world surrounding this remarkable artist. Get Behind-the-Scenes, Insider Access to GRAM Docent Recruitment Reception Tuesday, June 7, 2016 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm Free

GRAM docents are volunteer art educators that engage in conversations with our guests about the Museum’s collection and exhibitions. Being a docent means being part of a long standing prestigious tradition of sharing knowledge and the Museum experience with others. Docents get a behind-the-scenes look at GRAM’s collection and exhibitions, life-long learning opportunities, and insider access to special guests, artists, and curators at GRAM. They also get to be part of one of the best groups around, who share their love of art with each other and our guests.

Many of GRAM’s docents didn’t have teaching experience before they joined our team. An ideal docent is outgoing, friendly, flexible, dedicated, and comfortable with public speaking. We provide each of our provisional (in-training) docents with a 7-month program of art education, during which they attend weekly training sessions. Collaborative learning and a specifically designed curriculum provide the content and practical knowledge necessary to lead groups of all ages through GRAM’s galleries. Join us at the next docent recruitment reception, where we will be welcoming new recruits who want to experience GRAM on a whole new level and join this community of fun and active learners.

Make GRAM a Part of Your Legacy Miner S. and Mary Ann Keeler Legacy Society Annual Legacy Luncheon Monday, June 13, 2016 11:30 am – 1:00 pm

We invite you to learn more about joining the Legacy Society at the eighth annual Legacy Luncheon! Legacy gifts strengthen the Museum’s endowment, providing much-needed annual income that helps the Museum continue to present a dynamic calendar of exhibitions, weekend family programming, and collaborations with schools and cultural institutions. As the endowment grows, so does the Museum’s secure future. Donors who contribute through a planned gift or make a provision for the Museum in their estate plans are eligible to join the Miner S. and Mary Ann Keeler Legacy Society.

It’s easy to become a Legacy Society member: • No minimum gift is required to join. • Your gift information can be completely confidential at your request. • One of the easiest and most popular ways of making a Legacy Gift is to remember the Museum in your will. • In addition to a gift in your will, there are other ways you may make a legacy gift. You can name the Museum as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or life insurance policy. Doing so is as simple as filling out a beneficiary designation form from your plan provider or administrator. For information or to RSVP, please contact Laura Bull at 616.831.2907 or lbull@artmuseumgr.org. Join today by filling out the intention form at artmuseumgr.org/planned-giving With any decision involving your assets, the Grand Rapids Art Museum encourages donors to consult independent professional counsel prior to making a gift.
