GRAM will survey the rich history of drawing through the exhibition, Marks of Genius: 100 Extraordinary Drawings from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. This exemplary selection of rarely seen charcoal, pen and ink, pencil sketches, watercolors, and pastels from the medieval and renaissance to the modern and contemporary, spans six centuries. Highlights include Degas, Homer, Klimt, Kollwitz, Matisse, Mondrian, Tiepolo, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Warhol. GRAM plays a key role in the city’s holiday festivities. The Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony will ignite the season on November 20. I am delighted to announce that Re-Envisioning the Nutcracker will be opening that evening. This exhibition, coinciding with the Grand Rapids Ballet’s groundbreaking production, will highlight the creative vision of Grand Rapids native Chris Van Allsburg. The Sunday Classical Concert Series returns this fall, with notable performances in our dramatic atrium. Come for the music and stay for the art: docent-led tours follow each concert, and are a great way to explore the highlights of Marks of Genius together with other culture enthusiasts. I look forward to seeing you at the Museum soon! Warm regards,

In Memoriam: Peter M. Wege Peter M. Wege FEBRUARY 19, 1920 – JULY 7, 2014 The Grand Rapids Art Museum mourns the passing of our friend and benefactor, Peter Wege, who had an enduring impact on us both as individuals and as an organization. Peter’s life was marked by his passions, convictions, and generosity. He invested deeply in things he considered vital: education, the environment, arts, and culture. Inspired by his parents, Peter’s personal mantra was, “Do all the good you can, for as many people as you can, for all the right reasons.” This profound yet simple directive steered an extraordinary stream of donations for more than 40 years, including personal gifts from Peter as well as through the Wege Foundation that he established in 1967. From his first donation in 1969 to his lead gift of $20 million in 2007 for GRAM’s new “green” home—the first new LEED® Gold certified art museum in the world—Peter saw his patronage of GRAM as a way to have a meaningful impact in a community he loved.

GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2014: Encore!
Coming in November: Re-Envisioning The Nutcracker
November 28, 2014 – October 11, 2015
November 20, 2014 – January 11, 2015
In a 2012 pilot project and again in 2013, GRAM curators selected works originally shown in various ArtPrize venues, from designers, filmmakers, draftsmen, sculptors, installation artists, and painters, to be part of an exclusive extension of the ArtPrize experience at GRAM. Chosen for their artistic strength and resonances with the Museum Collection, with upcoming exhibitions, and with the unique architectural setting, the works from ArtPrize were carefully placed among works in the collection from all periods, on all three floors of the Museum, from shortly after the close of one ArtPrize through the end of the next.
This holiday season brings the premiere of a brand new production of The Nutcracker by the Grand Rapids Ballet. Under the direction of Artistic Director Patricia Barker, the ballet will feature the creative vision of Chris Van Allsburg and Eugene Lee.
GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2014: Encore! will again showcase some of the strongest works across ArtPrize 2014. GRAM curators will select 10–15 works to be announced at the
Re-Envisioning The Nutcracker, GRAM’s complementary exhibition, provides a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of designing and staging the collaborative production. Items to be included are Chris Van Allsburg’s original drawings for the set and production design, scale models of the sets, and examples of the costumes designed by Patricia Barker. conclusion of ArtPrize, and installed within the Museum in October and November, to be available for viewing by Thanksgiving weekend.
Michigan Artist Series: Jessica Joy London: A State of Wonder
Grand Rapids native Chris Van Allsburg is the renowned author of The Polar Express, Zathura, Jumanji and other classics. Eugene Lee is the Tony Award winner for
set design of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Wicked, and the Emmy Award-winning production designer for NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
Coming Next Year: Edward Burtynsky: Water February 1 – April 26, 2015
I imagined if it rained color, the landscape would look like my paintings. Shades of blue would flow from leaf to fallen leaf picking them up and repositioning them on bright green blades of grass and grey concrete in harmonious compositions.
Through enormous color aerial photographs by world-renowned photographer Edward Burtynsky, this exhibition explores humanity’s increasingly stressed relationship with the world’s most vital natural resource—water.
—Jessica Joy London
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 30 Cash bar opens at 6 pm. Artist talk at 7 pm in Cook Auditorium. Free admission.
October 23, 2014 – January 2, 2015 Jessica Joy London creates paintings that are artifacts of chance, conscious decision-making, and the fixed laws of natural phenomena. For inspiration, London closely observes the ordinary in the everyday and often integrates simple materials into her art. She incorporates water from her fish tank, garlic and onion skins, grapefruit, leaves, and grasses. She combines these with colored inks spilled in a systematic and methodical way onto the synthetic paper. Her bright, abstracted images look both biologically organic and mysteriously imagined.

Over the past five years, Burtynsky traveled across the globe, weaving together an ambitious representation of water’s increasingly fragmented life cycle and the roles that it plays in modern life: as a source of healthy ecosystems and energy, as a key element in cultural and religious rituals, and as a rapidly depleting resource. These images—sometimes elegant and sometimes haunting, many bordering on the edge of complete abstraction—hover between the worlds of painting and photography, forming a compelling global portrait of water that functions as an open-ended question about humanity’s past, present, and future relationship with the natural world. Sooper Art Contest September 20, 2014 – April 25, 2015
Celebrating its fifth year, this annual contest is inspired by Sooper Yooper: Environmental Defender, a children’s book about the ongoing struggles to protect the Great Lakes by the late artist Mark Heckman and writer Mark Newman. CALL FOR ENTRIES!
Teachers and parents are invited to submit your child's artwork to GRAM. Drop entries off during regular business hours beginning September 20. An awards ceremony will be held for the winners from each age category in spring 2015 in GRAM's Cook Auditorium. For contest rules and guidelines, please visit artmuseumgr.org or call 616.831.1000

This October, GRAM collaborates with the Thriller! Chiller! genre film festival as they move downtown this year with additional locations including UICA and The Pyramid Scheme. Enjoy a film screening of H.G. Wells’ Things to Come, then stay for an in-depth lecture with Toni Perrine, an expert in science fiction film studies, as she explores humanity's enduring need to envision our future, including perspectives of dystopia/utopia and postmodernism.
Your Gift Today Provides Art Every Day! To accomplish this, we rely on the generosity of individuals for support of our Annual Fund, which provides for over 30 percent of GRAM’s operations. While Membership dues are important, Annual Fund contributions ultimately support all that we do by having a direct impact on every facet of our day-to-day operations and ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the Art Museum.
