Opening May 20, we're thrilled to present this summer’s feature exhibition: The Art of Rube Goldberg. We invite you to celebrate the first comprehensive survey exhibition in nearly 50 years of one of 20th century America’s most wildly talented innovators! In addition, GRAM is partnering with local public schools to showcase our intrepid young inventors—check out their creations inspired by Goldberg on view in the galleries. While planning your getaways this summer, don’t forget to mark your calendars with GRAM’s newest programming. This summer’s schedule is packed with art-making activities, outdoor concerts, and fun events for the whole family— there’s something for everyone to enjoy! Sign up your little art lovers for one of our exciting summer camps featuring painting, printmaking, and color-crazy fun. This year, we are even featuring a brand new camp just for teens. The little ones can also grab a parent for our Parent & Child Workshops and make a variety of fun crafts, including picnic blankets and wacky devices that draw. For those 21+, we invite you to pop a cork with GRAM Studio at Creativity Uncorked and get inspired by The Art of Rube Goldberg for an evening of unforgettable art and fun. Rounding out the season, kick-off ArtPrize 2017 with GRAM After Dark, an evening of drinks, dancing, and a unique event you won’t want to miss! Finally, look no further than downtown GR to spice up your summer nights. On Thursday evenings in July and August, GRAM’s outdoor terrace is the place to be—GRAM on the Green is back in its ninth year! With great music, dancing, and the best food trucks around, grab your friends and family for evenings of cool summer fun. While enjoying the festivities outside, pop inside our galleries and enjoy free admission, part of Meijer Free Thursdays. We’re open late Thursdays only—until 9 pm—so, come for the music and stay for the art. I look forward to seeing you at the Museum soon! Warm regards,

The Art of Rube Goldberg May 20 – August 27, 2017
The Art of Rube Goldberg is the first comprehensive survey exhibition in nearly 50 years that demonstrates the artistic talent and endless imagination of the legendary American cartoonist and illustrator, Rube Goldberg (1883 – 1970).
Celebrated for his graphic techniques, enduring characters, and especially for his invention drawings, Goldberg is an American cultural icon whose influence can still be felt today. Support for this exhibition is generously provided by: Wege Foundation

The Art of Rube Goldberg brings together more than 75 drawings, rare photographs, sketches, and animated films, as well as rare personal photographs and memorabilia from the Goldberg family archives, to bring to life one of 20th century America’s most wildly talented innovators. The exhibition traces Goldberg’s career over a remarkable 72-year period, from a rare early drawing, through his syndicated strips of the 1920s and 30s, to his influential later works. The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist is best known for his invention drawings—complex chain-reaction machines designed to perform simple tasks. These humorous drawings and cartoons were for Goldberg, “a symbol of man’s capacity for exerting maximum effort to achieve minimal results.”
The Art of Rube Goldberg was conceived by Creighton Michael; developed in cooperation with Heirs of Rube Goldberg, LLC, New York, New York; and curated by Max Weintraub. The tour was organized by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

NOW AT THE GRAND RAPIDS ART MUSEUM
From board games and toys to music videos and Hollywood movies, Goldberg has influenced some of the most indelible moments in pop culture. His name is so synonymous with his creations that it was added to the Merriam-Wesbter Dictionary as an adjective that describes the act of complicating a simple task. Enhancing the exhibition is Peter Fischli and David Weiss’ 30-minute video, The Way Things Go (1986–1987), in which objects such as tires, saws, ladders, and buckets are animated by physics: water, fire, gas, and gravity propelled these objects to collide and react in a chain of events. Rube Goldberg’s invention drawings were a major inspiration for Fischli and Weiss during the two years they spent working on the video.

GRAM explores the fascinating interrelationship of visual art and music in two simultaneous exhibitions this fall.
Christian Marclay: Video Quartet October 28, 2017 – January 14, 2018
Christian Marclay: Video Quartet is a theater-sized video projection that presents a flow of film excerpts featuring people playing instruments, singing, or performing actions that generate noise, such as knocking on a door. Video Quartet’s four adjoining screens are synchronized so that these previously unconnected performances blend together. The artist spent over a year composing and editing more than 700 individual film clips to create this exhilarating new work of art and music.

Burchfield: A Resounding Roar explores the idea that sound and music were a crucial source of inspiration for Burchfield’s art. The exhibition brings together paintings and drawings inspired by the ever-present sounds of nature, as well as the music of the great classical composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Support Your Museum Announcing a New Acquisition GRAM is honored to announce the recent acquisition of Emil Nolde’s Face of a Woman, which was a generous gift from supporters Thomas H. and Anne Girth Logan. Emil Nolde was a German painter, printmaker, and watercolorist who gained worldwide attention for his intensely rendered landscapes and portraits. Nolde began his painting career in 1897, and over the following years took classes at various private art schools in Munich, Paris and Copenhagen. Nolde was invited to join the “Brücke” artists’ group, to which he belonged for eighteen months. Nolde’s art exemplifies the Brücke artists’ loose and expressive approach to imagery and emotional, high-key colors. Over the next decade, Nolde began to receive public attention in Germany; and from 1923 onwards his works gained international notice. During the Third Reich, Nolde’s paintings were confiscated from museums and were a focus of the Nazi Regime’s infamous Degenerate Art campaign. Beginning in 1941, the Nazis prohibited Nolde from painting at all, though he secretly continued to make small watercolors. Face of a Woman is a nighttime portrait. The woman’s angular features are rendered in swift strokes. Nolde emphasizes her dramatic make up and jewelry, and the harsh incandescent light on her face. GRAM is thankful to the Logans and others who generously provide gifts

Get Behind-the-Scenes, Insider Access to GRAM Docent Recruitment Reception Tuesday, June 6, 2017 2 pm – 3:30 pm Free
GRAM docents are volunteer art educators who engage in conversations with our guests about the Museum's collection and exhibitions. Being a docent means being part of a long-standing prestigious tradition of sharing knowledge and the Museum experience with others.
Committment and Community: The History of Volunteerism at Grand Rapids Art Museum Celebrate the history of volunteering at GRAM! This book explores the many ways volunteers worked to drive and support the museum over the last 100+ years. Learn stories of how GRAM has grown throughout its history— from using volunteers' homes as galleries in its early days, to the Museum’s present building at 101 Monroe Center in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids.
Docents get a behind-the-scenes look at GRAM's collection and exhibitions, life-long learning opportunities, and insider access to special guests, artists, and curators at GRAM. They also get to be part of one of the best groups around who share their love of art with each other and our guests. Join us at the next recruitment reception, where we will be welcoming new recruits who want to experience GRAM on a whole new level and become part of a community of fun and active learners. To RSVP, email Diana Klein at dklein@artmuseumgr.org
Copies are available for purchase in The Museum Store.

Gazing at GRAM is a specialized tour program that engages guests who are living with memory loss, such as Alzheimer’s dementia or traumatic brain injury. Through docent-led tours, participants explore and exchange ideas about art and artists, activate the imagination and think creatively, experience intellectual stimulation, make connections between personal stories and the world at large, and participate in a meaningful activity that fosters personal growth. If you know a group who would be interested in booking a Gazing tour, please email Diana Klein at dklein@artmuseumgr.org • May 24
