In celebration of Michigan’s role as a catalyst for advances in Modern design, GRAM is delighted to present an exhibition featuring key designers and architects from innovative, Michigan-based organizations. Michigan Modern: Design That Shaped America brings together hundreds of landmark design objects, engaging participatory experiences, and fascinating pictorial and video documentation of the leading figures and key historical developments in architecture, industrial design, furniture, outdoor recreation, and more! GRAM on the Green summer concert series switches from Friday to Thursday nights in July and August. Come unwind and begin your weekend with an enjoyable evening of free live music on the GRAM Terrace, a cash bar, dancing in Rosa Parks Circle, and different indoor and outdoor activities each week. Our Michigan Artist Series currently features Susan Goethel Campbell’s fascinating earth-based imprints. In May, the Series will present Tim Powers’ pillow forms, created from silicone, plastic, and wire. ArtPrize returns to GRAM this year, beginning with the Member Preview on September 17. Until then, be sure to check out GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2013: Encore!, a composition of works from last year’s competition. ®

Michigan Modern celebrates the state's outstanding contributions to Modern design, and highlights the people who made them happen. After its debut at the Cranbrook Art Museum last summer, GRAM is excited to bring this significant exhibition to West Michigan, devoting extra galleries for the exhibition which spans two floors. The exhibition underscores the highly influential international role that our state has played in mid-century design innovation.

Michigan Modern is a comprehensive study of Michigan’s role as a catalyst for advances in modern design from the turn of the century to the 1970s, featuring 50 key designers and architects from 20 innovative, Michigan-based businesses and institutions. Come see this amazing exhibition for yourself and enjoy the experience that is Michigan Modern, on view May 18 through August 24, 2014. This exhibition was organized by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office in association with Cranbrook Art Museum and curated by MPdL Studio of Ann Arbor, Michigan. The exhibition has been expanded by the Grand Rapids Art Museum, with an exhibition design by Seth Alec Keller.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EXHIBITION

GRAM’s exhibition focuses the spotlight on our region’s deep roots in the areas of architecture and design, as well as the people who made it happen. Michigan visionaries touched nearly every aspect of American life. Detroit’s automobile manufacturers didn’t just produce cars; they styled automobiles to become synonymous with the American dream. Michigan's furniture makers revolutionized the look of the American office and home. Architects Albert Kahn, Eero Saarinen, Gunnar Birkerts, and Minoru Yamasaki defined an architectural era with important buildings in Michigan. Industry, prosperity, and educational institutions created a synergy that attracted the design talent that formed the foundation for modern American design. Organized into ten thematic sections, the exhibition explores the modernization of industry, the teaching of architecture and design, various aspects of the military, institutions such as churches, schools, libraries, and the city square, and the modernization of public housing, organic design in home furnishings, living space, work space, mobility, and recreation. 2

Marc Greuther about his unique experience as a historian coming to Michigan to discover the important strides made in this state in industrial design, furniture, and architecture. The conversation will be led by GRAM Director, Dana Friis-Hansen. J. Marc Greuther is Chief Curator of The Henry Ford, and Curator of the museum’s industrial and design collections. Greuther has a B.A. in the history of art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London. May 29 – August 17, 2014 Below the Surface displays the evolution of Tim Powers’ working practice with different materials and his understanding of their hidden potential. The exhibition features a large-scale installation, spanning two entire walls, of over 400 of his pillow forms, along with several other experimental sculptures, including one that glows and responds to movement in the gallery. Powers' curiosity and respect for the unique qualities of the materials with which he works make this exhibition compelling, leaving us wondering what other mysteries lie where we cannot see.

Gazing at GRAM is a specialized group tour which engages guests who are living with memory loss, such as Alzheimer’s, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. The program fosters an active dialogue, intellectual stimulation, and engagement of participants, through a docent led observation and discussion of original works of art. Michigan Modern Symposium at KCAD Michigan Modern Symposium June 19 – 21, 2014 Registration required. Fee is $250. Limited student registration available for $175 Kendall College of Art and Design

A collaborative partnership between Kendall College of Art and Design, the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office, and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the Michigan Modern Symposium will explore Michigan’s unique contribution to modern design and architecture. The symposium’s opening event will feature a keynote address from artist and designer Todd Oldham, whose book Alexander Girard, explores the life and career of Girard, the critically acclaimed Herman Miller textile designer. Other speakers include: Mira Nakashima, daughter of furniture designer George Nakashima; Donald Albrecht of the National Building Museum, who will discuss industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes; Marilyn Moss, who will discuss fabric artist Bill Moss; and sculptor and playground equipment designer Jim Miller-Melberg.

Symposium attendees will have the opportunity to tour the Herman Miller Furniture Company design and manufacturing facilities in Grand Rapids and Zeeland, the Meyer May House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and the Marcel Breuer-designed St. Francis de Sales church in Muskegon. Coming Soon: Marks of Genius: 100 Extraordinary Drawings from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts October 24, 2014 – January 18, 2015 Marks of Genius showcases the superb drawing collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, featuring 100 outstanding drawings, watercolors, and pastels spanning more than 500 years—many of them rarely exhibited. The exhibition highlights the immediacy of drawing and explores its multiple roles as a means of study, observation, problem solving, a record of the artist’s imagination, and a medium for creating finished works of art.
