Masterpieces from GRAM's Print Collection on View Through September 1, 2013

Featuring works by Dürer, Rembrandt, Pechstein, and more, The Jansma Print Collection constitutes a masterpiece collection of prints by artists who have been inspired by Christian faith and Biblical themes. Following the recent gift of 24 18th-century prints by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, the collection now spans a full five centuries of printmaking.

GRAM offers a variety of resources for guests year-round to learn more about works on paper in the Museum collection.

The Jansma Family Works on Paper Study Open from 1 – 4 pm Tuesday–Saturday, the Jansma Family Works on Paper Study provides public access to the museum’s collections of prints, drawings, and photographs, including works of American and European origin dating from the 15th century to the present.

Download the Free Jansma Print Collection iPad App! Experience five centuries of masterworks delivered straight to your iPad. This app is available in the iTunes store, and presents information about the artists and their techniques in one user-friendly resource. Engaging interactive elements allow you to dive deeper into the work, discovering details and highlights of this important area of the museum's collection. Explore the exhibition with this digital publication created by GRAM and Conduit Studios. For those who would like to view the app from their home computer, it is also available online at thejansmacollection.artmuseumgr.org.

We’re thrilled to present a stunning exhibition of quilts crafted by Susana Allen Hunter in Wilcox County, Alabama from the 1930s to the 1970s. A collaboration with The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, the exhibition and accompanying programs explore how recycling, improvisation, and Hunter's surroundings inspired her constant creativity. GRAM on the Green on Friday nights in July and August offers varied activities on the plaza plus wonderful local music, as well as a chance to view all our exhibitions in the evening. This is a great way to end a week with friends and family, then continue on downtown for dining, entertainment, or a relaxing stroll. Speaking of exhibitions, I hope you’ve had a chance to see The Jansma Print Collection at the Grand Rapids Art Museum: Five Centuries of Masterpieces, which has received wide acclaim by those who have visited our galleries—and beyond. GRAM’s custom iPad app for this project has been downloaded in 22 countries, and a website version makes this even more accessible for students, researchers, and general audiences who seek to know more about these superlative "old master" prints. Using 21st century strategies, we are sharing GRAM’s art, research, and intellectual work with the entire world through digital media, expanding our impact and awareness, and encouraging learning anywhere and at any time. Also on view, explore GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2012: Encore! and the eye-popping painted wall sculptures by Heather McGill, featured in our Michigan Artist Series. And ArtPrize returns to GRAM in 2013 with a Member’s Preview on September 11. ®

I hope you’ve been feeling the increased energy coming from GRAM’s Education Center Studio. Our team has planned another season of Summer Art Camps, with five separate week-long programs. For adults, Creativity Uncorked offers an opportunity to meet friends new and old, tour the galleries, and return to the studio to open up your artistic side—no experience necessary! And there are even more exciting programs coming soon, so keep checking artmuseumgr.org for details. I look forward to seeing you at GRAM this summer! Warm regards,

Dana Friis-Hansen, Director and CEO

Using her innate flair for abstract design, Susana Allen Hunter (1912–2005) created hundreds of colorful improvisational quilts throughout her lifetime. From the 1930s to the 1970s she lived in Wilcox County, Alabama, and created brightly patterned quilts that reflected her life in that rural community as well as her experiences as an African-American woman. Hunter turned the fabric of everyday life into eye-catching quilts with an abstract, asymmetrical, and often modern aesthetic.

Though she was working with preexisting formats such as strip and medallion quilts, she was not following a set pattern and made design decisions as she went. Quilts were fashioned from whatever fabrics were at hand, and she incorporated worn clothing, leftover fabric scraps, and empty grain sacks as design elements. While the size and shape of the scraps were one determining factor of the design, it was the overall visual impact and balance that mattered most.

Susana and her husband Julius made their living farming, growing crops such as cotton, corn, and potatoes. Wilcox County, also home to the quilting community of Gee’s Bend, was among the poorest counties in the United States. Like everyone else in their community, the Hunters worked hard and resources were few. Hunter's genius was in creating beautiful, functional objects from what little material was available.

The Grand Rapids Art Museum presents a spectacular selection of Hunter's colorful quilts, on loan from The Henry Ford.
