The MD’s Letter Hello and welcome to the latest Grassroot Media offers directory. We’re continuing to talk to various suppliers of both football and cricket equipment with a view to getting you, our clubs, a selection of preferred discounts for being a part of our network. Over time we’ll look to add more of these offers and the options for us are limitless so if you have a particular purchase coming up let us know and we’ll see what we can do. Things we are working on at the moment include a trophy company, energy comparison firms to get your clubs energy costs lower, club tie suppliers, playing surfaces companies in case you are thinking about a new 3G pitch or having new matting put down in your cricket nets and some promotional companies giving you the chance to make some money through selling club-branded items to your players. The theory is that with our access to so many grassroots clubs, retailers and service providers will look to gain market share by advertising in this booklet, and we’ll only let them if we think it’s a decent deal for you guys. I also want this to start giving clubs more help and advice on selling themselves so if your club is coming up against any particular sales objections or brick walls when you are trying to get local businesses investing in your club, let me know and I’ll try to make this booklet a bit more professional and useful editorially. Lastly, you’ll notice we now have a section for Club Classifieds and ‘Top Tips’ - let me know if you have anything you’d like to pop in there, everything is of course free of charge for our member clubs. One last thing before I go, if you’re a cricket club and you haven’t given us your fixture data for the coming season then we need this quite urgently. If you’re unsure as to whether you’ve done it or not please get in touch with me and I’ll check for you, but it is vitally important that we get these numbers. All the best for the coming season if you’re cricket, and for the football clubs I hope you’ve done as well as you wanted this past season. All the very best, and thanks for being part of the Grassroot team, Mat Court, MD

Club Classifieds This is a new page in the magazine that gives you, the clubs, space to advertise whatever you want to the other clubs receiving it. Yes, it’s pretty amateur but it’s free and you might be able to use it to shift some old ground equipment, goal posts, team kit, bar supplies etc. Also you could use it to see if anyone wanted to share your current equipment to help reduce costs (rollers/scarifiers/seeds etc.) Just drop Mat a line on mcourt@grassrootmedia.com if you have anything you’d to pop in there - we’ll list them on a first come first served basis and if there’s a huge demand for space then we’ll give it an extra page of space. 5
Grassroot Teamwear A while ago I was getting some quotes for a contact at a cricket club and realised first hand just how expensive buying kit could be. So, we have decided to launch our own range, imaginatively called “Grassroot Teamwear”. The idea behind it is to offer you, our clubs, some of the cheapest shirts available in the UK. This is very much a budget service but the shirts are better quality than you’d expect for the price, mainly because the margins we’re operating at are extremely low. As with the rest of the Grassroot Media business, the motivation behind doing this is to save our clubs money. If it is successful then we might look in to the more complicated arena of football teamwear, but for now it is just cricket playing shirts. No T20 tops or training kit for now, no fancy piping, no fancy designs, just simple white/cream playing shirts at the cheapest price we can do for you, our member clubs. These prices are not available to non-member clubs so there’s not much point telling other clubs about it that aren’t part of the network. Please see the advert opposite for more information and prices. Once we get our first completed order we’ll print photos of the finished article so you can see what they are like. Any questions or to place an order please contact Mat on mcourt@grassrootmedia.com or call 0800 8 20 21 22.

Cricket Club Corner Daniel Bingham, Development Officer at Wembdon Cricket Club in Bridgwater, Somerset Tell us a bit about your club... what do you do, where are you, which leagues, how many members etc... Wembdon Cricket Club in Somerset has over 200+ members ranging from 6 to our oldest playing member 60 and retired players older still. We have a thriving junior section which keeps our 4 Saturday League and 2 Sunday League XI's running without difficulties. We compete in the Somerset Cricket League and 1stXI within the West of Engand Premier League. Our Ladies set up is still in its infancy but is one of a small number in the area and compete in the Somerset Ladies League. We compete in the National Village Cup and have reached the national rounds often in recent seasons. We like our T20 cricket and enter the ECB National Competition and host plenty of social touring fixtures during the season providing a well stocked bar and BBQ! Have you had any famous players pull on the shirt? Our most famous player to date would have to be Andy Hurry who played for the club before taking over the as Head Coach at Somerset County Cricket Club. Andy still holds this position and has masterminded their success in recent seasons. Tell us something interesting about your club... We have received planning permission to move to a new purpose built £2 million venue in the heart of Wembdon (left), a facility that will include two cricket pitches and numerous football pitches, a village hall, pavilion & changing facilities. We are looking to play at this new venue in 2015 with work due to start shortly. This is an exciting time for the club and Wembdon community. Who does what at the club to do with revenue generation/sponsorship? Nicki Palmer coordinates our Fundraising committee who organise weekly, monthly and annual draws, quiz, curry, bingo and race nights. Kev Rawles Out with the old, in with the new! heads up our Sponsorship approaching local contacts to advertise either online, club hand book, in pavilion or around the ground. Have you got any advice for other clubs in our network looking to be more successful when it comes to generating funds? Generating funds in the current climate can be a challenge so be realistic. Businesses maybe more inclined to provide labour or materials rather than cash so consider projects you have. We use the services to help maintain ground equipment and a local flower grower to provide hanging baskets for example. When running draws or raffles people are more likely to take part if tickets are £1-£2. What do you find is the best approach to getting advertisers and sponsors in and around the club? Think what you can offer the sponsor and how working with the club can benefit them. We try to offer match days where sponsors can bring along a certain number of guests for a free drink for example. Have you got a Twitter page our other clubs can make contact with you on? @wembdoncc Is there anything you'd like us at Grassroot Media to be doing that it isn't at the moment? During the first month or two of a new year assistance in locating businesses to advertise in handbooks. Perhaps we can split the income we currently charge £25.00 full page colour or £15.00 half page. We'd also like to get greater success with boundary boards, currently we have a few deals with localbusinesses but finding new advertisers can be challenging. If you’d like to have your club featured on this page then please get in contact with Mat Court at mcourt@grassrootmedia.com and we’ll get you in front of the other clubs in the network.

Football Club Corner Jonathan Cotterill-Bolsover, Coach at Worsborough Bridge Athletic FC in Barnsley
Tell us a bit about your club... what do you do, where are you, which leagues, how many members etc... We have 3 teams, a senior side playing in the North Counties East league, a reserve side in division 1 of the county senior league and an under 19's team in the northern alliance central under 19's league. Altogether we have about 60 squad members and a great coaching and management team. Have you had any famous players pull on the shirt? Mick McCarthy, Mick Wadsworth, Geoff Horsefield, Jon Brown. Tell us something interesting about your club... Former player Jack Taylor was bought from us in 1935 by Wolves for the sum of ÂŁ5 - 5s 0d. He played for wolves, Norwich, Hull and QPR before managing Leeds until Don Revie replaced him. Who does what at the club to do with revenue generation/sponsorship? We have recently decided to put new emphasis into sponsorship for the coming seasons and intend to offer some fantastic new deals for potential sponsors. I myself deal with potential new sponsors as it stands. Have you got any advice for other clubs in our network looking to be more successful when it comes to generating funds? When looking at sponsors, offer something new and exciting - but make sure you follow through on the promises that you make or the sponsor will walk away. What do you find is the best approach to getting advertisers and sponsors in and around the club? Meet them in person and find out what they want from a sponsorship deal Which brand would be your perfect sponsor and why? Sports and football brands are an obvious target but we are trying to involve local business as we are very much a community club. Have you got a Twitter page our other clubs can make contact with you on? @JonathanCarer

Q&A with the Inventor of the Stinger5000, Kevin Bandy Q. Is the Stinger suitable for adult batting practice? A. Yes it is,; as a keen cricketer myself I know there is nothing like the feel of leather on willow but the stingers accuracy, pace & bounce is a great work out for the most experienced club cricketer Q. What balls will the Stinger5000 fire? A. The recommended balls are the GM-FB ball (more suited for the junior batsman) and a basic tennis ball (improved pace & bounce) and other balls include the Slaz Ball, swing king ball, diegest balls, DF junior ball, Incrediballs and all similar balls –no leather balls Q. What piece of mind will I receive after purchasing the stinger? A. The Stinger range of bowling machine is manufactured by an established UK company and comes with 18 months warranty as well as a full back up service. Q. How reliable is the Stinger? A. The machine comes with a manual and if the few basic instructions are followed you will have many years of maintenance free use Q. Why can’t it deliver at speeds 90mph+? A. Very few if any club bowlers bowl at 90mph+ and the stingers top speed will test the most experienced club batsman Q. How do I power the Stinger5000? A. A 12-volt power supply is required, any 12-volt battery or a mains transformer will do, and both are available from the KB Cricket Website Q. How safe is the Stinger5000? Stingers In Action A. It is perfectly safe. To ensure the well being of the machine and its users it comes with a manual, safety instructions and a completed risk assessment

MAKE MONEY FOR YOUR CLUB BY SELLING CLUB MUGS!! One of our member club, Derriaghy CC in Northern Ireland, mentioned a great idea a while ago, getting clubs mugs made and getting them sponsored. We thought at the time it was a great idea to get some new (and free) mugs to use at tea time and to generally make a club more professional-looking but then we thought that you might be able to make some money from it. So we’ve had a look around and found a company in Wales called “The Mug Shop” who, funnily enough, just deal with mugs, especially personalised ones. What they can do is make and sell (at a discounted rate) to your club a bunch of mugs tailor made for you which you then sell to your players, members and fans for a mark up, therefore making the club money. It’s a pretty easy way to generate some funds and we think players, members and fans will go for it. If you have a sponsor on board you could even get them to pay for the mugs in return for their logo on the side of them but still charge the players, therefore generating the club even more profit from each sale. Here’s a quick Q&A with Brinley, the owner of The Mug Shop: Q. Can you give us a step by step guide as to how we get our football or cricket club logo & name on to a batch of mugs? A: Firstly compile good quality digital copy/s of the image/s you want to use on your mug design. If you are familiar with Photoshop visit the "Design your own mug" section of the Mug-shop.co.uk website and download the relevant PSD template and create your design. Alternatively, if you need assistance creating your design then email your images to design@mug-shop.co.uk along with a design brief of your requirements and they will create it for you. Once your design has been created you can go online and upload your design when placing your order using the "Design your own mug" section of the website, remembering to enter the 10% discount code GRASS during the checkout process. Q. If we have a sponsor can we add their logo on to our mugs? A: Yes! Designs can incorporate any image combinations so for example you could have your logo on one side and a sponsors on the other. Q. How long does the process take from start to finish? A: If you already have a completed design the turnaround is usually 5 days. Q. How long have you been making mugs? A: Since 2002 Q. How is the best way to get in touch? A: Email is our preferred method of communication using the address: design@mug-shop.co.uk
