So God Made a Farmer “I need somebody to get up before dawn and milk cows and work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board. So, God made a farmer.” right: 25th Pageant in 1988 4

Virginia (Ginny) Welden Brown ▪ 1964 Virginia was our first Herkimer County Dairy Princess. ► Attending the World’s Fair in New York City is her favorite memory. Hard; really hard to believe it has been 50 years! Fifty years ago makes this event seem almost like it happened to someone else in another time. I have, however, taken some moments to reflect on the experience and recall it as very enjoyable and rather scary for someone who likes to hide from the public eye as much as I seem to. Everyone was generous and I met some truly interesting and thoughtful folks. ► As a young woman, I loved the farm, the animals, the fact that we were part of a group of people who supplied something of great value to the well being of people. ► I now live in the city, Minneapolis, MN which is a long way from the farm. I am enjoying this experience and find there are many ways to be part of the earth, even here. Last summer I had the opportunity to visit the farm where I was raised and lived during my time as Dairy Princess and it is definitely a bittersweet memory. Time has changed so many things and recognition was only in glimpses. ►
My good wishes are extended to you and everyone who attends. Many blessings to you all.
Carol Prior Spaulding ▪ 1965
Carol is the daughter of Cart and Marion Prior of Clayville. She was involved in the Hoofbeats riding Club at Mt. Markham. She graduated from high school in 1965 and Cornell University in 1969 with a degree in Home Economics. She was married in 1972. She was teaching at North Babylon Sr. High School at the time of her unexpected passing due to a heart condition. Ann Marvin chaperoned Carol to the State Pageant held in New York City. Agnes Burke and Joe Brown were also part of Carol’s dairy princess year.

Denise Entwistle Albin ▪ 1966 Mother of Adrienne, Megan and Kim, Denise and her husband, Michael, live in Frankfort near the family dairy farm. She is a special education teacher. Denise’s most memorable moments were riding in the parade with Dave Garroway and the trip to New York City. Editor’s note: Denise’s father, Bob Entwistle, Sr. , is still attending livestock auctions as of April 2013. ►
Marjorie McKenney VanRigh ▪ 1967 New York State Dairy Princess
Marjorie became the New York State Dairy Princess at the State Pageant held in August 1967. Helen Agne Cleveland became Herkimer Co. Dairy Princess.
The old princess in Holland. caption by Marjorie
Since 1972 I have been living in Holland. My last visit to the states was almost 2 years ago. For 20 years I was married to a Dutchman. We spent 5 years sailing on our own sailboat in the Med. At the moment I am retired and living in Amstelveen, Holland. I studied Social Work at Syracuse University where I received a BA degree. In Holland I worked as a English Secretary for many years. I eat lots of dairy products....every day I eat yoghurt for breakfast and Dutch cheese for lunch. I have lots of good memories of my time as New York State Dairy Princess. The highlight was the 4 days spent in Chicago, for the National Competition. I was the 3rd runner-up.

Helen Agne Cleveland
Marjorie’s old sailing friend and his boat, 5th Symphony.
▪ 1967
She is married to James Cleveland and lives in Little Falls, N.Y. They have three sons, Jesse, Douglas and Cale. She enjoys photography and many other interests. Dairy Memory: Going to NYC and touring the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island and also eating in Chinatown. For a kid that had never been anywhere, it meant the world to her.

Deborah Brelinsky Zampardi ▪ 1968 Deborah is married to Frank Zampardi. She has four daughters: Melissa, Laura, Christina and Theresa and enjoys her grandchildren. Debby can still appreciate what the exposure of being Princess has done for her. The State Pageant in Syracuse is her best memory. ►
Debrah Lyon Murphy ▪ 1969 Debrah is a dairy farmer with her husband, William J. Murphy two miles south of Fairfield. They have been there 41 years and have 350 head; milking 170 cows. She raises the calves, feeding as many as 40 twice a day. They have four children and 10 grandchildren. She enjoys traveling to the long-distance grandchildren. On December 4, 2013, their farm will celebrate a centennial of Murphy ownership. Consequently, she is planning summer 2013 farm tours the 100-year celebration. ►
Debrah is active in the Fairfield Restoration Association. With a historical comrade, she took pictures, 142 different views of the barns in the Town of Farifield. Her motivation was to document them before the deteriorating barns fell down. There is a slide presentation of the barn views set to the music of “Gone with the Wind.” There are 3 posters available for purchase. Each poster has a collage of 18 barns. ►
The word to describe my farmer is “diligent.”
Deborah Gilbert Baron ▪ 1969 Wow --- doesn’t seem so long ago until I type the 1969. My husband, Bob, and I live in Voorheesville, N.Y. I was a “stay-at-home mom” until our youngest child headed to college. At that time, I accepted a position at the Voorheesvile Central School District business office. My hobbies are many, including travel, watching sporting events, scrapbooking, and reading. We visit the family farm (Len-Lo Farms) several times a year, however; since our four adult children do not live in the area (3 live out-of-state), it makes it difficult to get to the farm more often. The Len-Lo Farms extended family manages to mark their calendars and get to the farm for nearly all holidays. The grandchildren and great a grandchildren delight in these visits. ► A dairy farmer is someone who is totally committed to the lifestyle. Several generations ago, becoming a farmer may have been by heritage rather than design. Not so these last few generations and for the future. Farmers are extremely dedicated to their livestock and their land. Dairy farmers are extremely hard-working. It is certainly the epitome of a 24/7 job. ► I still enjoy the Milk Mustache commercials. ► Dairy products are a major staple in our household. It would be difficult to decide between the morning glass of milk or the evening bowl of popcorn drenched in butter. ► My fondest memories include meeting all of the wonderful people throughout Herkimer County and the events; riding in the parade was pretty special and the state pageant was a terrific event. ►

Cynthia Will Ball ▪ 1970 She is married to David Ball and lives in West Winfield, N.Y. They have a daughter, Hilary. Horses are her hobby. For her first speaking engagement with a fraternal organization, she was prepared to speak to 20-50 people and found 250 or more when she arrived. She took a deep breath and did what she had to do. It gave her a great feeling of accomplishment that helped her over and over again her her career and personal life.
►
Ann Preisser Brown ▪ 1971 Dolgeville graduate
Eileen Donahoe Muhlig ▪ 1972 Eileen works at the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing. ► She fondly remembers her time spent at community events, especially those with fellow dairy princess Janice Smith from Oneida County. Last farm “visit” was probably in the late 80’s during my days with Cooperative Extension and the Farmnet program. Those were difficult times.
►
Food has to be ice cream with Greek yogurt in second place. The ice cream: year round and anywhere I hear it’s good. ► Word to describe dairy farmer: Strong, tireless and family. ►

Her hobbies include traveling, reading and baking. ► During a school program, a little girl asked me if I knew Princess Diana. Kirsten Haughton Bezio ▪ 1998
Kirsten lives in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and is a pharmacist. Fondest memory: Going to the state pageant and meeting all the girls from all over New York State.
Katie Fredericks ▪ 1999 I am employed by the State of New York at a CNYDSO home for developmentally disabled adults as a direct support assistant. I am Mom to 7-year-old Ava (who will tell you that she plans on being the Herkimer County Dairy Princess one day) and 5-year-old Julia. We reside in Little Falls on the dairy farm that I grew up on. I am very involved with my children and am a Cheer Mom, Girl Scout Cookie Chairman and I volunteer in their classrooms at school. My educational background is in Culinary Arts and you will often find me baking for my family, for charity events and especially for my children’s activities. ► I still look back on my year as Herkimer County Dairy Princess as one of the most wonderful times of my life. I got to share with so many the only way of life I had known up to then-that of a dairy farm family. I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people during my reign. I made a dear friend, Jessica Hula, from my court and 10 years after I ended my reign she became my sister in-law. Being the Herkimer County Dairy Princess was an experience I feel truly honored to have had. ► Best memory of my year as HCDP is a tie returning to my elementary school and giving my school program-and-taking a calf to the BOCES special education program and letting the kids feed and pet her. Look for the Real Seal. ► I like taking my girls for ice cream in the summer! Dairy farmers are the hardest working and most dedicated people I know. ► Dairy farming-not your fathers job-a family’s way of life! ►
Kassandra Martin ▪ 2000
Kassandra is from Jordanville, N.Y. Fondest memory: All the parades on the “Got Milk” float with all the girls in the court.
Jordanna Dodge ▪ 2001 NYS Dairy Princess
Jordanna is from Schuyler, N.Y., where her parents own and operate a small dairy farm. She graduated with Honors from Herkimer County Community College in 2011, with a degree in Communications and is currently living in Ithaca, N.Y., majoring in Agricultural Sciences at Cornell University. Her goal upon graduation is to have a career in Ag Policy or Communications for the dairy industry of NYS. Her hobbies are bowling, reading, graphic design and scrapbooking. Fondest memory: Meeting Governor Pataki at the Herkimer County Fair. However, any event where the entire court was present was always a blast, and those are the memories that live on forever. ► Every time I come home from school I visit the farm. My last time working there was in August ‘12. - cont’d 19

My favorite promotion is still “Got Milk?” - It’s simple, but it made a lasting impression on all consumers and was easy to remember. ► My absolute favorite is milkshakes in the summer, but I love so many products all year round! ► Steadfast describes a dairy farmer. ► I love the phrase “No farms, No food” because it’s so true. Again, it’s a simple phrase, but it means so much - without our dairy farmers working as hard as they do, we wouldn’t have all the amazing dairy products we enjoy on a daily basis. ►
Jessica Hula-Fredericks ▪ 2002 NYS 2nd Alternate Dairy Princess
Jess graduated from Morrisville State College with a degree in Dairy Science. On July 10, 2010, she married Christopher Fredericks and they own and operate a progressive 400-cow dairy, Insight Dairy, LLC in Little Falls. Jess enjoys taking 8-year-old Natalie (Chris’ daughter) to cow shows and raising her two Saint Bernards, Macy and Brody, and collecting Barbie Dolls. Currently, Jess serves on the Herkimer County Farm Service Agency County Committee and is the advisor for the OHM Junior Holstein Club. ► 2002 was the year that milk vending machines flowed into 9 schools across the county! It was a great experience and very rewarding to work with so many people who had the same drive as I did to help promote nature’s most perfect food!

It was a great experience and a chance to do something I had never done before. We were of course no match for the winning team, Mr. and Mrs. Hooker, but it was a memorable experience! When was your last farm visit? Too long ago, close to two years I believe My favorite dairy promotion slogan is 3-A-Day because it promotes consumption while simultaneously reminding us all how many servings we need for strong bones and teeth! ► I love to have cereal with ice cold milk for breakfast every day. ► Dedicated describes a dairy farmer. ► Dairy farming is an extremely difficult life that takes more heart, dedication and perseverance than any job I know. “Got Food?, Thank a farmer” ► ►

Although I am currently living in Philadelphia while I work toward getting my master’s degree at Drexel University, I make sure to visit the family farm every time I return to upstate New York. My hobbies are cooking, reading and gardening. ► My favorite memory was visiting all of the local elementary schools and teaching kids that chocolate milk does not actually come from brown cows. It was very exciting to get kids excited about dairy at a young age! My favorite dairy slogan is 3-A-Day. This was the slogan that I used during my county reign to encourage the consumption of dairy products. ► I like to consume dairy products all the time, but I try to make sure that I start every day with dairy, whether it’s milk on my cereal or cheese with my toast. ► Hardworking and caring describes a dairy farmer. ► Dairy farming is rewarding, challenging, and a vital part of today’s society. ►
Breanna Douglas ▪ 2008 My name is Breanna Douglas and I was the Herkimer County Dairy Princess from 2008 to 2009. That year I was a senior at Little Falls High School and I am now a college graduate! It is crazy how fast time flies. This past May I graduated from The College of Saint Rose with my Bachelors in Elementary and Special Educational and an extension up to 9th grade. At Saint Rose I was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the ALANA Step team, Identity, Club Soccer, and Spectrum. I recently moved back to Little Falls, after spending 4 years in Albany. I am currently working on my graduate degree as an Educational Technology Specialist through online classes at Saint Rose. In addition to attending college full time, I work as a teacher assistant at Little Falls Middle School, work security for sporting events, and a service leader at Hannaford on the weekends. Needless to say, since my year as princess I have continued to keep myself very busy. Working as the Herkimer County Dairy Princess was a great experience for me. Prior to winning my crown I had spent a lot of time at my uncle’s small farm as I grew up. Once I got a little older and school got busier I spent less and less time there. Running for princess reminded me of how important our local dairy farmers are to the community. ► Dedicated describes a dairy farmer is dedicated. ► Being a farmer in general requires a lot of hard work and responsibility. Farmers can’t take sick days or request days off, they don’t have down time or off seasons; farmers they put 100% of their time and commitment into their farms. -cont’d22

Throughout my year as princess I had many fond memories with my court and the people I was lucky enough to work with. I had the opportunity to travel to Albany and took part in the lobbying process, attended the Herkimer County and State Fair, passed out cheese at Canal Days, rode in many different parades, and attended other local events. Of course, I also spent a lot of my time doing school presentations which was my favorite part about being princess. During these visits I met many teachers and students who were very excited for the, “Princess,” to visit their school, which I definitely played up when I walked in with my Cinderella style prom dress. One of my favorite dairy slogans would have to be the one I created for my own dairy princess promotion and used at state pageant which was, “Say Cheese.” I spent a whole year using the promotion, “Say Cheese,” while I taught students the importance of dairy in their diets. However, I would have to say, “Got Milk,” runs as a close second! I am very thankful for the opportunities and experiences I gained while working as the Herkimer County Dairy Princess. I wish the best of luck to future princesses and hope they will all love the job as much as I did. Let’s be honest, what little girl doesn’t dream of someday becoming a princess? The Herkimer County Dairy Promotion committee can make that dream come true!
Leah Davis ▪ 2009 Being the Herkimer County Dairy Princess was something that was so good for me. Before I came princess I was somewhat introverted, and shy. Being able to gain confidence and talk to people about something that we were both interested in really gave me a confidence boost. I had such a blast with all the girls, it is crazy to look back at the pictures and see how little we all look! I really cherish the memories I had with everyone and the inside jokes and bonds that were created. As well as that, I had gotten to spend more time with my mom and dad which are memories I will never forget. It was great to see my parents so proud of me supporting something that means a lot to them, especially my dad! I wish that it could have lasted forever, I had some of the best memories with the best people!
Katie Upson ▪ 2010 I am currently a full time student attending SUNY Delhi, majoring in Veterinary Science Technology. I am also working part time at Bed, Bath & Beyond or as a waitress during the summers at the Peppermill Steakhouse. On my free time I enjoy horseback riding and snowmobiling with family and friends. ► My fondest dairy promotion memory: Any school program presentations. I enjoyed teaching and working with the eager students who so willingly participated and learned the importance of consuming dairy! ► My last farm visit would be this week… I help out on my fiancée’s family dairy farm! ► My favorite milk/dairy slogan would be “Got Milk”. ► I enjoy a glass of farm fresh milk with every dinner and during the summer I love to enjoy a bowl of ice cream! ► Dedicated describes a dairy farmer ► Hard work, dirty, very hands on experience, lifestyle, rewarding (depending on who you ask & how you look at it!) are some words I would use to describe dairy farming.
