Become a master storyteller 7. Think about communication not decoration 8. Obsess about ideas not tools 9. Clarify your intention 10. Setting realistic expectations
Background: You are teaching your first online course in Biology using Moodle. You think you have everything set up for launch, but are not quite sure. You send out your welcome email and open up the course. Shortly after the course opens, you receive the following email. Professor: I have NO idea what you want me to do. Your course makes NO sense. I log into the course and see nothing. -Wesley
WHAT DO YOU DO?
Background: You are teaching an online study skills course at a high school. The course was created to satisfy the state online course experience requirement for graduation. The course consists of multiple choice practice exams that prepare students for a formative assessment at the end of the school year. Students are given access to all of the exams at the beginning of the school year and must complete 1 practice exam every 2 weeks to receive credit in the course. At the beginning of the school year students and parents sign a letter of agreement that clearly articulates the expectations. Email from a parent:
Dear (you): I am extremely upset that my daughter received no credit for turning her "assignment" in late. It is unreasonable to assume that a student has time to work outside of class. It is absurd that a school would even consider requiring students to work online. What do you plan on doing about this? Mr. Smith HOW DO YOU RESPOND?
