GOLDEN CIRCLE

Golden Circle It’s a favourite for good reason. The Golden Circle combines history, culture and extraordinary nature for an unforgettable experience. Þingvellir National Park is an attraction of great historical, geological and cultural significance. Located in a rift valley where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates pull apart, is the UNESCO designated world heritage site is situated. It is also the birthplace of the Althing—Iceland’s parliament founded in 930 AD - where the nation’s most powerful leaders would meet to decide on legislation and carry out brutal Viking-age justice. There you find majestic views of one of Iceland's largest natural lakes with its intersesting biosystem and whole unique entity. At the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, you can take several paths around the two tiers of cascading water to explore several vantage points and if weather conditions allow, take a short walk down a pathway to the falls and get close enough to feel the mist of glacial water on your skin. Gullfoss is a powerful waterfall with a rich history that our expert guides will share with you. At Geysir Geothermal Area you’ll find “The Great Geysir” hot spring, which all geysers are named after. The area is an impressive collage of bubbling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and colourful algae deposits. Strokkur geyser puts on quite the show every few minutes blasting boiling water high up into the air.

Our outing begins with an exploration of Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site that puts Iceland's plate tectonics on dazzling display. We’ll visit one of Iceland's largest natural lakes and learn the remarkable story of how the nation's first parliament was formed. Next, we move on to the awesome Gullfoss waterfall, where you will witness the hypnotic power of the tiered falls—sometimes close enough to feel the mist of the glacial waters on your face. The tour continues to the geothermal area surrounding Geysir where another hot spring, Strokkur, erupts every few minutes. It's a great way to get to know Iceland in a single day trip.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Northern Lights Many travel all the way to Iceland with the sole intent of witnessing the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. After all, it is one of the few places on Earth where the odds of catching a glimpse of this exquisite natural phenomenon are quite good during winter. The Lights come to life when electrically charged particles from the sun collide and enter the Earth’s atmosphere. They usually appear green but have also been known to materialize in yellow, pink, blue, violet or even red. They scatter across the sky and light up the darkness in a magnificent natural display of light and movement. We have years of experience when it comes to catching the Northern Lights. Our expert guides are veritable gurus when it comes to identifying the best locations to optimize our chances at spotting the lights. They rely on a combination of science-based aurora forecasts, a network of people in the field and 18 years of gut intuition, which means that no tour is the same. Because nature is unpredictable, no one can guarantee sightings, but what we can guarantee is an enjoyable and enlightening journey with the best shot at seeing the lights that you’ll find anywhere. So if you have the opportunity to see and enjoy something so spectacular, well - we suggest you take it! Note on sightings The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon—no one can guarantee sightings. If the Northern Lights are not seen on tours AH33 or AH133, the tours are non-refundable, but we offer to rebook guests on AH33 free of charge. Check book.grayline.is, our offices or your hotel for tour status. If your tour is canceled, please contact us or rebook directly at book.grayline.is

SOUTH COAST & GLACIER LAGOON

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón is one of Iceland’s most popular locations, known for its unique and breathtaking beauty. It’s actually quite famous too, having been featured in the films “A View to a Kill”, “Die Another Day”, ”Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” and “Batman Begins”. So it should come as no surprise that the lagoon is also favored by photographers from around the world because of the majestic icebergs floating in the icy blue water. Jöklsárlón developed into a lake after the glacier Breiðarmerkurjökull started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It has been growing at varying rates ever since and now covers an area of about 18 square km. It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at around 250 m deep. We offer several ways to reach Jökulsárlón to make sure you find something to your liking. In addition to the scheduled day tour, we offer two-day tours and private tours. Find more on grayline.is.

SNÆFELLSNES NATIONAL PARK

Snæfellsnes National Park Snæfellsnes peninsula is often called Iceland in miniature for the sheer density of attractions in the region. It’s situated to the west of Borgarfjörður in western Iceland. Rich with diverse landscapes, birdlife, hiking trails, historic sites and friendly towns and villages, Snæfellsnes has become one of the most popular destinations for travelers in Iceland. At the westernmost end of the peninsula is Snæfellsnes National Park. It was established in 2001 in an effort to protect and conserve the area’s extraordinary landscape, historical significance and local wildlife. The park allows easy access for visitors to explore the natural wonders around Snæfellsjökull glacier. Snæfellsjökull glacier is the crown of Snæfellsnes, and certainly the most storied glacier in all of Iceland. The 700,000-year-old, glacier-capped stratovolcano has inspired stories around the world, including Jules Verne’s timeless classic Journey to the Centre of the Earth where a group of scientists descend into the crater of Snæfellsjökull glacier and find themselves on a wild adventure after discovering a runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga. If you’re looking for sparkling fjords, dramatic volcanic peaks, golden beaches and a region steeped in history and intrigue, then Snæfellsnes is waiting for you.

Duration: 5-6 hours Included: Bus fare, guidance in English & caving gear.

Explore the inside of a dormant volcano with our expert guides. Some may wonder how that’s even possible, as magma chambers usually collapse following an eruption. The case of Þríhnúkagígur is exceptional in that the lava drained out like water from a pipe, leaving the volcano’s “plumbingsystem” empty but intact. So the Þríhnúkagígur crater is one of the few places in the world where you can enter a magma chamber. After an hour-long hike, we enter the volcano by way of an open cable lift and descend 120 meters down until we’ve reached the ground which is about the size of three basketball courts. NEW YEAR´S TOURS

New Year It is safe to say that no other nation celebrates a new year quite like Icelanders do. Thirty minutes to midnight, you will probably start to hear fireworks. That is not an official firework display, but a majority of the population setting off about 500 tons of fireworks. Traditionally, families sit down for a festive family dinner, followed by a meet-up at a local bonfire. If you don’t see any locals out between 22:30 and 23:00, it is probably because all of them are inside watching the annual comedy show “Skaupið”, a satire of major news stories and big events over the past year. The end of the show marks the beginning of the madness, as families rush out to light up the sky with fireworks. We operate tours on New Year’s Eve where our expert guides take you to the local bonfires and best places to watch the spectacular fireworks display.
